Since you requested asks, I've been thinking about this: how do you find and choose places to eat when traveling? I find myself sometimes wanting to try ~good food~, either locally or close enough (within an hour drive, let's say), but not sure how to search out places that are good and not a recognizable chain? Just wondering about your approach!
I read a ton about food! I read a ton about food, all the time. I am constantly trolling different forums and publications.
So, when i set out to go someplace, I'll usually go to the Eater guide for that place, and then a reddit forum for the place (big big cities like NYC and London have foods-specific reddits), cry about the fact that Chowhound, which was the best resource ever created, is now gone, and then look up things like local write ups and stuff like that, and then --Crossindex. What comes up multiple times? Does it sound like boilerplate, or does it sound organic? What do the negative reviews sound like?
I make up my list and go read menus. Does anything sound new or different? I have eaten a LOT of different things, so if I see something that screams novelty, that's usually a great sign.
It's a fair amount of work, I confess. I just happen to really enjoy it. i enjoy the pursuit! And sometimes I'm wrong. Or sometimes, i get what I was looking to get experience-wise, but the food wasn't as good as I might have hoped. There's a lot of things that go into what makes an experience "good" for me, and food is a very important part of that, but it's not the only component. Some of my favorite meals have been about the company, or the feeling I had there, or the joy of solitude sometimes.
So i try to be very cognizant of what it is I'm LOOKING for. And then, using all of my resources, I go find it! If I didn't really answer your question, let me know. Sometimes you do something for so long you forget details.

Sen Sen the Chowhound!
#This game has way more personality (and the story mode certainly helped)#Than its spiritual predecessor,Neko Atsume…I frankly like it more than NA#Pity it didn't gain the traction and attention it deserves! i love how popular operation mana chowhound was 😍 and that the service men were so excited to be dropping their own scarce non necessities like candy and chocolate for the occupied countries who had been deprived food for much much longer. cros's stories of how excited literally everyone on base was to be running these missions and how many volunteered for it is something i have never heard of before. i mean yeah i knew about chowhound but usually documentaries skip over it or barely mention it like in the show. I guess it isnt exciting enough to be included in a movie. personally i would have liked the show to linger on how airmens attitudes towards missions changed the minute they werent dropping bombs and the chance of being killed dropped dramatically. like i kind of wish we got to see the transition to civilian life more. in the context of flying specifically. reminds me of hobey baker who felt bereft and purposeless after he no longer had a reason to fly missions. i kind of wonder if chowhound was also an attempt by the higher ups to ease the transition from bomber crew to civilian life. give flying a new purpose, even if it also was semi temporary.

"As a traveler, I believe in the 'Grandma rule' — meaning when I go to Grandma's house, I eat what Grandma puts on the table," he told EF Journal. "I may not like Grandma's food. It may even conflict with my personal beliefs. But I'm going to eat it."
