Book #4 of 2023 📖 “Disciplines of Grace” ✍🏻 Jerry Bridges 📚Christian Living ⭐️ 4/5

Quote: “Run, John, run the law commands. But gives me neither feet nor hands. Better news the gospel brings- it bids me fly and gives me wings!”

Discipline and grace are not two words I would normally interchange or expect to see in the same sentence. Yet such is the Christian life as Jerry Bridges explains in his exposition of the role grace plays in our pursuit of holiness. Just as both wings of an airplane are crucial for flight, this book reminds us that the exercise of both discipline and dependence is absolutely necessary in our walks as children of the King.

What I liked most about this book was that everything led back to the gospel. The gospel shaped each truth shared and fueled each encouragement written.

I’ve heard many times from various Christian teachers to “Preach the gospel to yourself daily” and reading this book was such a practical and spiritually refreshing way to do that.

Titus 2:11-12 says “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”

How beautiful that not only does God’s grace save us to live for him, but enable us to live for him! . . .

What is your homeschool prep like? For our lives, I find that it helps when I prepare for school the night before. Or if I have time on Sundays, I prepare as much as I can for as many lessons possible. For the junior kindergarten kids, we use @memoriapress , I don’t need much prep except to put the books I need, in my book bin. The curriculum is phonic heavy with lots of listening and reading but some paper cutting and coloring. I separate that from the curriculum entirely and sometimes do randomly throughout the day, instead of within the schedule. The kids love all the books and have really taken to the rhyming from poems but not so much the songs. For my part, I don’t think I’ve introduced enough music, so that might be why they’re not so into the music. What I’m finding over all is that my prep is long term. I only do parts of laminating as I go, which means I also only do small sections of cutting, as needed. It helps to not be overwhelmed. I make time to find things that I can use around the house that will lend itself to organizing my curriculum. The box in the picture was a full box of sour gummy‘s that my husband bought. While I don’t think it’s a great idea to have that many gummy’s in our house for no particular reason (while I’m on @ww ) except that my children like them, I did find a great use for that box! I cut it up and tossed the complete set of alphabet flash cards inside. Between lessons, as a craft, I’m going to let the little kids decorate it. I think there’s this weird well of creativity that keeps getting filled in me. It’s like I’m always thinking of new things to do to or build, to make learning fun for our kids and to make my life easier. Aside from that new realization, I have also come to understand that I probably drink more coffee than I ever have, in my entire life. My second favorite book that I read in 2017 was another memoir: ‘H is for Hawk’ by Helen Macdonald. The language of this novel was beautiful. She captured the essence of mankind and nature so beautifully. I asked my husband for a dog for Christmas. He got me this book instead 😅

Our landlord doesn’t allow pets in our apartment but I still think he could have pulled some strings to make it happen.

All jokes aside, this lighthearted read was much appreciated and came at a good time. After my Pop passed away I came down with a rough bout of sickness, so it was nice to have something easy and entertaining to pass the time and get my mind off things.

My husbands plan was foiled though. This book did not appease my dog fever. It only made it worse 😂
