I am slowly learning to be okay with not needing to read the most popular book out there, and to just read the books I know speak to my soul, even if they take a little more time (which I am happy to give). I feel like this whole fomo but with books thing really just stems from the fact that I barely had any access to books as a child and as a young adult/adult I just wanted to belong. It's certainly a non-linear process, but it's a process nonetheless.

Book Review for Neanderthal Seeking Human

As the first book I have read by Penny Reid, I really wanted to love it! While I did enjoy the humor (she had me laughing before I finished the first page), I just couldn’t go all in with this book. The the storyline of Janie and Quinn was solid; however, it was the subplots that consistently pulled my attention away, causing my interest to dip until we were finally able to get back to the heart of the story. Understanding Neanderthal Seeks Human was Penny’s debut novel, I believe her writing was still finding its footing and the rest of the series may be more formulated and awe-inspiring.

To say Janie has had a bad day would be a gross understatement. First, she finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Next, she spectacularly destroys her work outfit and has to borrow a variety of items to resemble a partially functioning/half decent human being. But it doesn’t stop there! Of course she is also fired once she gets to work, conveniently being part of a downsizing of one. You would think mercy would be taken on her at some point but the icing on the cake, the extremely hot security guard – Sir McHotPants, the man she can’t even look in the face, has been assigned to escort her off the premises. What has she possibly done to deserve all of this?! Out of the three sisters, she was the good one, the calm one, the one who always did the right thing. Taking a deep breath (after hiding in the bathroom post firing and pre McHotPants), Quinn leaves with her head held high and resolves to get her life back on track. After sulking around the apartment and embracing her new reclusive way of life, her roommate and best friend Elizabeth suggests a girls night out. Not knowing what she signed up for, she definitely wasn’t expecting to run into McHotPants – i.e. Quinn! She also didn’t expect to wake up hungover, in her underwear, and in a strange bed the next morning! Quickly to reassure her nothing happened, Quinn offers to help Janie snag a job where he works. Going full circle and back where it all started, Janie finally feels like things are working out. Now if she can just figure out her love life. Lucky for her, Quinn has an answer for that too!

While I don’t see myself reading any more books in this series, I do highly recommend it for those who love a steamy romance with humor, suspense, drama, and a quirky group of characters that keep you smiling, guessing, laughing, and loving from beginning to end.

Book #4 of 2023 📖 “Disciplines of Grace” ✍🏻 Jerry Bridges 📚Christian Living ⭐️ 4/5

Quote: “Run, John, run the law commands. But gives me neither feet nor hands. Better news the gospel brings- it bids me fly and gives me wings!”

Discipline and grace are not two words I would normally interchange or expect to see in the same sentence. Yet such is the Christian life as Jerry Bridges explains in his exposition of the role grace plays in our pursuit of holiness. Just as both wings of an airplane are crucial for flight, this book reminds us that the exercise of both discipline and dependence is absolutely necessary in our walks as children of the King.

What I liked most about this book was that everything led back to the gospel. The gospel shaped each truth shared and fueled each encouragement written.

I’ve heard many times from various Christian teachers to “Preach the gospel to yourself daily” and reading this book was such a practical and spiritually refreshing way to do that.

Titus 2:11-12 says “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”

How beautiful that not only does God’s grace save us to live for him, but enable us to live for him! . . .

2024 Reading Roundup (Featuring Fable)

My 2024 in fandom has been quiet punctuated by disorientating ups and downs. (I've finished writing... zero fics! I have... three WIPs! Oh my.) So instead I'm gonna talk about my reading, with a little help from Fable stats and Fable Wrapped

I was on course for reading maybe 30 books this year (quite a drop to the 150 or so a year before Simon Snow). But after longingly (and guiltily) looking at my TBR list, I decided to challenge myself to read 30 books in November.

I read 26, but it did what I hoped - reignited that love for reading.

Then, after much prodding, I joined Fable. Basically it's Goodreads but prettier and with a better social feed. I have fallen in love. The graphics in this post come from Fable.

"Bookish identity crisis" indeed. Fable, this chaotic reading is all just me, thank you very much.

My favourite books of the year are Penance by Eliza Clark, A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske and Prince's Gambit by C.S. Pacat

Fable Wrapped shamed me for both being too niche and for riding the hype train. Ain't no pleasing some people. (Piranesi by Susanna Clarke was a re-read and is one of my favourite books of all time, READREADREAD.)

Ok ok, so rather than let this become swamped with fable graphics, I'll drift to an end.

Next year, I'm aiming to read 52 books again. My reading will include a mix of queer romance, dark/horror fiction, narrative nonfiction, Cornish history and SFF. I'll definitely keep using Fable - it feels like such a natural evolution of Goodreads - and get the most out of all its functions, such as by joining a book club. If I feel bold, I may even host a book club towards the end of the year. I'd like to host one for When The Tides Held The Moon by Vanessa Kelly.

It was a loooong day, like 6:30-00:30 long. I have no idea how come I spent so much time studying, I didn't use pomodoro or anything but I was writing down the time starting and finishing study sessions and then I summed it up and- what the fuck. Since when do I have enough attention span for studying for so long?? I guess I didn't do that much but in those last three days I've done more than through the last three weeks so- I'm happy. I mean, maybe not happy but I do feel good. I have the second only-good-mood-day in daylio in a row, which last happened in December. I'm reminded that I really, really like my studies.

I asked my husband for a dog for Christmas. He got me this book instead 😅

Our landlord doesn’t allow pets in our apartment but I still think he could have pulled some strings to make it happen.

All jokes aside, this lighthearted read was much appreciated and came at a good time. After my Pop passed away I came down with a rough bout of sickness, so it was nice to have something easy and entertaining to pass the time and get my mind off things.

My husbands plan was foiled though. This book did not appease my dog fever. It only made it worse 😂
