MDA20009 DIGITAL COMMUNITIES Week 4 Post
Prompt: ‘Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikToks and Instagram?’
In a world dominated by TikTok dances, Instagram Reels, and short, snappy content, you might question if there is still room for traditional blogging. As digital trends shift, it's critical to assess if blogging is still a successful medium for creators, brands, and viewers.
The name "blog" is a playful mash-up of "web" and "log," first used in 1997 to represent a digital diary of sorts (Kreiss 2009). Like sailors in the past, Blogs keep a chronological record of thoughts, experiences, and observations. While many blogs have a standard structure with a main content column flanked by sidebars for links and advertisements, they come in various styles (Kreiss 2009). Some are personal and infused with the writer's distinct voice, while others adopt a more journalistic tone, offering thoughts with flair (Kreiss 2009). In some ways, blogs are like navigating the huge ocean of the internet, with each one directing readers through the waves of information.
Blogging is far from extinct but faces stiff competition in today's fast-paced digital environment. With millions of blog articles published daily, getting through the clutter demands exceptional material. Shortened attention spans have also led users to fast, snappy formats such as TikTok and Instagram, making traditional long-form writing appear outdated for some (Essam 2024). Furthermore, the rise of visually engaging content—such as videos, infographics, and podcasts—provides more immersive experiences, and challenging text-heavy blogs (Essam 2024). However, with innovation and quality, blogs may still shine! Even with the popularity of short-form videos, blogging is still very much in use today (Schaefer 2023). With 70 million new articles written on WordPress each month and over 600 million blogs comprising one-third of the internet, it is evident that there is a need for text-based content (Schaefer 2023). Written newsletters are on the rise thanks to sites like Medium, Substack, and LinkedIn, and reading is still a popular learning method for many people. Gen Z is spearheading this trend: 35% say they read more now than they did two years ago, and 55% read once a week, primarily on their phones (Schaefer 2023). If reading remains a primary means of content engagement, blogging will continue to flourish.
Blogging has evolved significantly from its inception in 1994 when Justin Hall launched links.net to share his work (Pandey 2024). In 1997, John Barger developed the term "weblog" to describe a diary of interesting sites on the internet, which was quickly shortened to "blog." During the late 1990s and early 2000s, blogging became a popular creative outlet, particularly among teenagers and young adults who utilized platforms such as WordPress to share personal thoughts, poetry, and feelings (Pandey 2024). It was a time when many people wanted to be bloggers, sharing their experiences without the expectation of a large audience. Over time, blogs developed from personal diaries to effective platforms for expression, information sharing, and even revenue (Pandey 2024). Today, blogging is a diverse medium used to provide in-depth advice, education, and news.
For niche themes, blogging is essential. Whether it's technology, money, academics, or specialized hobbies like gourmet cooking or astrophotography, some topics necessitate in-depth investigation that can't be captured in a quick TikTok video or Instagram post. Blogs offer a forum for thorough instructions, analysis, and long-form content, allowing readers to delve deeply into a subject. Here are some examples I have found. Henry Jenkins and Pop Junctions have grown from Confessions of an Aca-Fan to a thriving forum with varied voices from academia, media, and activism (Sowa et al. 2024). Its editorial board includes experts such as Benjamin Burroughs, who investigates streaming technologies; Christopher Cayari, who investigates music and social media; Samantha Close, who focuses on fan studies and labor in creative industries; and many others, including scholars of pop culture, technology, and fandom from institutions such as the University of Amsterdam, USC, and Michigan. They contribute to a lively discussion about popular culture, media literacy, activism, and other topics. Secondly, the proliferation of internet portrayals of motherhood has influenced the cultural references and archetypes used to create and consume contemporary parenthood (Orton-Johnson 2017). Mummy blogs, a type of life writing, have developed in the blogosphere as a significant cultural phenomenon, providing a prism through which we can reflect on current conceptions of motherhood (Orton-Johnson 2017). Blogs have created forums for people to represent, negotiate, and oppose their mothering experiences. By challenging and reinterpreting traditional portrayals of motherhood, giving voice to the private world of motherhood, and focusing on the maternal voice, mommy blogs allow for more nuanced articulations of maternal identities (Orton-Johnson 2017). As a result, mummy blogs have been positioned as tools of empowerment with the ability to democratize mainstream media discourse. There are even blogs that are dedicated to fandoms of anime, manga, and webtoons, I am sure there are many more examples you readers can come up with.
In the age of TikTok and Instagram, blogging is relevant because it provides a thorough exploration of complicated topics that short-form content cannot. While short, visually appealing formats remain popular, blogs continue to thrive as outlets for niche interests, in-depth analysis, and personal expression. From scholarly conversations to personal tales such as mummy blogs, the written word enables deeper involvement and community development. With millions of new pieces written each month and emerging platforms such as Medium and Substack, blogging remains a valuable part of the digital ecosystem, coexisting with modern, fast-paced content trends.

Price: [price_with_discount] (as of [price_update_date] - Details) [ad_1] 36 Disturbing True Crime Stories of Murder and Deception Readers Love This Series - Over 7,000 Five-Star Ratings on Amazon & Goodreads Three Book Collection: Volumes 7, 8, and 9 of the True Crime Case Histories Series (2022) *** This series can be read in any order ***If you’re a fan of true crime, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the big-name cases: Ted Bundy, BTK, David Berkowitz, Christopher Watts, Diane Downs, Casey Anthony, Jeffrey Dahmer, Jodi Arias, Ed Gein, etc. The list of well-known, notorious cases throughout history is seemingly endless. Books, websites, podcasts, streaming television series, and magazines are filled with their abhorrent tales of mayhem. They’re some of the most foul killers the world has ever known. In my books, I do my best to find stories you may not have heard of. To do this, I count on my readers to send me stories that may have gone forgotten and aren't found all over the internet. Inside, you'll find 36 True Crime stories from the 100 years. Many of which you may never have heard of. You'll read the story of five-year-old Stephanie Hebert, who walked only three houses down her quiet suburban sidewalk and disappeared forever. Her case went cold for forty years before other children from her neighborhood came forward in their adulthood with information leading to the killer. There’s the story of the sadistic mother who viewed her children only as the spawn of their demon father, torturing them for their entire short lives. You’ll also read of the deranged husband and wife team who started their own cult and made it their life’s mission to rid the world of witches. Another story tells the disheartening tale of a toddler’s skeleton found in a suitcase on the side of the road. Motorcyclists discovered her mother’s skeleton more than 600 miles away. Five years had passed, with no one even realizing they were missing. There’s also the heartbreaking story of a single mom, drowning in debt, who did the unthinkable for insurance money. Many of the stories in this book feature women killers, three of whom took the time to meticulously dismember their victims—a task that can take great strength. Another woman manipulated her two teenage boys into killing for her. Plus many more disturbing stories. The stories in this volume are shocking and exhibit human behavior at its absolute worst. Pure evil. However, these things really happen in the world. We may never understand what goes on in a killer’s mind, but at least we can be better informed. Included in this volume: Stephen McDaniel, Lauren Giddings, Leonard Tyburksi, Dorothy Tyburksi, Cheryl Knuckle, Greg Rowe, Ellen Boehm, Bevan Spencer von Einem, Alan Barnes, Neil Muir, Peter Stogneff, Richard Kelvin, Omaima Nelson, Betty Freiberg, Kimberly Hricko, Steven Hricko, Hilma Marie Witte, Sky McDonough, Leanna Walker, Carol Carlson, Daniel Carlson, Gerard John Schaefer, Evans Ganthier, Rebecca Koster, Gary Vintner, Mikhail Drachev, Chris Andrews, Dennis Tsoukanov, Sean Southland, Konstantin Simberg, Jason Massey, Brian King, Christina Benjamin, Sheila Keen, Debbie Warren, Michael Warren, Marlene Ahrens, Charles Albright, Travis Lewis, Martha McKay, Grant Amato, Cody Amato, Chad Amato, Margaret Amato, Robert Willy Pickton, Marty Dill, Heather Teague, Joe Ball, Jared Chance, Ashley Young, Theresa Knorr, Robert Knorr, William Knorr, Jason Vendrick Franklin, Stephanie Hebert, John Joubert, Danny Jo Eberle, Christopher Walden, Ricky Stetson, Anna Maria Cardona, Lazaro Figueroa, Charles Schmid, Jeremy Gipson, Jessica Thornsberry, Justina Morley, Domenic Coia, Nicholas Coia, Eddie Batzig, Jason Sweeney, Angela Stoltd, Jimmy Sheaffer, Vincent Tabak, Joanna Yeates, Edmund Arne Matthews, Lisa Ann Mather, Daniel Holdom, Karlie Pearce-Stevenson, Khandalyce Pearce-Stevenson, James Carson, Michael Bear, Suzan Bear, Susan Barnes Carson From the Publisher

Master Notes: Decent video of David’s Javert! The first 16 minutes up until “At The End of the Day” are pretty rough (due to having to change the way I filmed lol) but other than that it's a pretty good capture! Some shakiness and adjusting throughout but it’s never really an issue. David gives an absolutely STUNNING performance as Javert!

Apple TV+ has released first-look images of its upcoming limited series “The Crowded Room,” which stars Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum.
The 10-episode thriller series will premiere with its first three episodes on June 9. The remaining seven episodes will then air one episode per week, concluding on Friday, July 28.
“The Crowded Room,” according to its official plot description, follows “Danny Sullivan (Holland) after he was arrested for his involvement in a New York City shooting in 1979. Danny unveils his life through a series of interviews with interrogator Rya Goodwin (Seyfried), and slowly details to Rya, and the audience, his mysterious past that led him to the fateful incident. As Danny retrospectively examines his life, he reckons with his past and a few pivotal moments, that ultimately leads him to uncover a life-altering revelation.”

September has passed and we’re heading into the cool fall hours, and the Phantom story certainly delivered us new reading material!
Patricia Peacock und das Phantom in der Oper by Tiffany Crockham is a German-language version of the story and leans toward murder mystery, starring Patricia and John Peacock, for whom this is the fourth book. They’re visiting the Cairo opera house, only to discover that the local soprano, Brunella Carvalotti, is being continually threatened by a mysterious Phantom that wants to remove her to make way for his own protege.
The Hells of Notre Dame by R. L. Davennor is the first in a series that is definitely Doing Things, in all capital letters. A mash-up of the Phantom story and Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it features a Phantom who has fallen in love with Esmeralda, and also they are lesbians. So few downsides on this one, is what I’m saying. (No idea if the gargoyles appear but you know I’ll be ready if they do, after When Angels Wept.)
Shattered Melodies by Jessica Eissfeldt is set during World War II and revolves around a scarred ex-soldier who runs into his first love singing in a club and decides to give romance one more try, even though he’s concerned about his face being a problem.
The Phantom’s Pet by Kassandra Kross is a dark erotica option in which a young performer attending a theatre group finds themself locked inside the Opera Ghost and getting extremely molested by the resident “ghost”.
Night’s Melody by Drake LaMarque is a hardcore BDSM gay romance AND a direct adaptation of the story, setting it in modern times with Christophe, a ballet dancer catapulted to being a singing darling after a surprise gala performance, and the mysterious Phantom who trains him, as well as Matthieu, the fellow dancer who loves him. It promises group scenes, if you’re into all your Phantom characters exploring together!
Symphony of the Night by Germaine Mooney is a collection of Mooney’s short stories and poems, all of them Phantom-themed! (Not a surprise, considering this is Mooney’s third Phantom-related work at least.) Twenty-four stories, including some hot and sexy ones, no waiting!
Xavie: Melody of the Night by David Schaefer is an interesting one; set during the Great Depression in the United States, it’s mostly about a young violinist who gives lessons to impoverished children, only to be extremely struck by the skill of a particular little girl who has more than a whiff about her of perhaps being a child version of Christine.
The Masked Stranger by MaryAnn Sires is a prequel to some of Sires’ other works, revolving around a masked architect who wants to build his own new theater in New York City, and who may just be the grandfather of some more recognizable characters later in Sires’ series...
The Picture House Phantom by Louise Smith is a short story about a family that moves to a new town for a fresh start and decides to move into an old converted theater, only to discover that there may already be a tenant in the basement who is not very happy to see them.

We’ve also got the Masked series by Skye Anne Chariss, which is really four chapters being marketed as separate books more than a true series (they run arou 50-60 pages each). The premise involves a scarred man who falls in love with a woman at a masquerade ball but fears letting her see what lies under his mask in case she rejects him, and romance ensues.
That’s it for now, but stay tuned for next month and the HALLOWEEN HAUL!
