Messy design notes:

I have mixed feelings over his design. On one hand, the outfit itself looks cool... and on the other hand it turned out to be nothing like what I had envisioned in the beggining 😭 I wanted to stick with muted colors, in the vibes of that pic next to howleen's I guess, but it's like Ruggie's design had a mind of its own, and would always lean to more punk-looking no matter how hard I tried to avoid it, which don't get me wrong- punk style does fit him well, the problem is that I had it reserved for another character already, and I wanted to repeat themes as little as possible between entries of this project.. that just may be my perfectionist side speaking though, and there is no reason why I shouldn't post this version here for the time being! If I don't get tired of working on this series by the time I finish all the main cast's designs, then I suppose I could try to make an alternative version of Ruggie with a slightly different theme! I'd do the same with Jamil's entry since he is yet another character I have mixed feelings about the design lol

Aaaanyway, the mood for chupacabra Ruggie is grunge/thrifted fashion with diy details he would add to make his looks feel unique to him I think? The spikes on his skin, although he can partially control (?) them, still get stuck on cloth every now and then. Nearly all items of his closet are a bit torn from it, but he doesn't mind all that much. I got no particular designs for the pins and badges he wears, maybe except for the brazilian flag and the trans pin which I rlly wanted to include somewhere on his clothes whsdbdshewbdi

The chupacabra's appearance vary from place to place, but for this, I based his looks on how I personally grew up hearing and imagining this creature to be like! Baisically a fucked up looking dog, sometimes with spikes and scales on its body? Yeah 👍

And he remains the same personality-wise in the AU, pretty much! At the moment I can't think of many fun facts or character quirks for him, aside from how impossible it is to take a selfie with him, much to Cater's dismay. He swears he doesn't do it on purpose! The moment the camera clicks his body moves on its own to be out of frame. Ruggie's entire instagram (or whatever the monster high equivalent of that may be) account are either pictures of a moving blur or a vaguely distinguishable sillouette of him, taken from far away and zoomed in 10x

In this Au I don’t think people would be born as hybrids. Around the age where kids start developing personalities that’s when they’re the most open to absorbing the ambient magic around them. The forms they take being dependent on a combination of the persons spirit and the local magic. It requires a lot of magic so it’s pretty rare and mythics require even more magic so are rarer still. It’s unusual to have more than one hybrid in a family let alone siblings and one being a mythic to boot is basically unheard of.

There’s room to change what creatures Price, Gaz and Ghost are I just went with lions because it’s England’s national emblem. I love Irish roach too but DRAGON.

Farah and Hadir are unequal opposites both hybrids but Farah is a mythic and they represent different elements and want different things in the end freedom vs retribution (I also wanted a hybrid antagonist instead of making all the bad guys human).

Laswell isn’t a mythic but she is also very rare she grew up on or near a hidden fossil when other hybrids (especially reptiles and some birds) get near her the feel like they’re in the presence of something ancient.

Golden eagles mate for life (Alrudy) and the snake the eagle eats on the Mexican flag is a rattle snake but I think it was originally a different one and Valeria does work better a a viper

You are so right with nick btw polar bears are one of the few animals to actively hunt humans and they’re smart to.

I think the first thing to change for soap were his eyes, they went from blue to BLUE and ever since everyone’s been to afraid of tainting the pure little Unicorn to even touch him. Being viewed as near holy did not help the religious guilt. This could also work with him being trans masc or just gay. Also did I say this was Ghoap yet?

Everyone listens to a mythic they are put on pedestals and viewed as nearly holy and hurting one purposefully is nearly unthinkable for most regular people, so having several in the military even if they are fierce creatures is nearly unheard of let alone with Soap. They usually become celebrities or spiritual leaders.

Shepherd mission in life is basically “if I can’t have special magic then I’m gonna make those who do suffer”. Makarov’s is to wipe out the walking talking crimes against nature. He’s one of the few deadend to magic like the opposite of a hybrid but that does mean magical tracking, attacks or other affects don’t work on him.

Nearly everyone has a bit of magic in them they can use and feel, hybrids and mythic hybrids have more Laswell has more then most still.

I see why you chose that but honestly it almost to many lions. What you could do is have Ghost's transformation happen around the Roba period. I know that goes against the premise, but it would be an explanation if you wanted to do something else. Maybe a chupacabra or OOHHH A BLACK DOG!!!

THE SYMBOLISM WITH ALRUDY AND VALARIA 10/10 (I'm a bitch for symbolism)

My thoughts exactly it also narrows down presumably a wide range of other bear hybrids. Polar bears are so cool and I have never seen one be used in a hybrid AU.

I love the Soap angst (I'm also a bitch for Soap angst) lovely ideas for potential angst it works very well. I did figure it was Ghoap when is it not.

That is such a cool concept and it really makes a lot of sense. Do you think you will have any hybrids that are disliked and on top of that to what extent do mythic hybrids extend to. Ie what counts as something you can be a hybrid of because there is fae and other stuff (yes this is a roundabout way to ask if wendigo hybrids could exist)

Both motivations are just perfect chefs kiss. It fits both of their personalities and Shepard strikes me as a spiteful old bastard. And Makarov is just pure evil.

I like that addition I think it really ties the premise together.

My Monster High OC! She is the daughter of the Chupacabra and is from Puerto Rico! Myself growing up and loving monster high it did make me a little sad that (in g1) the only outwardly latina characters we had were Skelita Calaveras, Batsy Claro, and Bonita femur (she is kinda debated but her name is literally Bonita so..) and none of them represented my culture (there’s hope for g3!) she still doesn’t have a name but I can tell you what was my thought process behind her design! Because of her being boricua I added some taíno elements to her design, mainly the sun and moon earrings (the left one with the darker yellow is the sun the right one with the paler yellow is the moon) and her necklace with the coquí, every boricua has had at least one in their lifetime. Some stories of the Chupacabra have it originating from space so I decided to include space/alien elements into her jewelry. Her eyeshadow is a reference to the town that she is from Canóvanas, Puerto Rico since that is where most stories of the Chupacabra originate from in PR, that’s why her eyeshadow is the colors of that flag! I hope you guys will enjoy seeing more of her in the future!

Alicia (Alice) Carroll is a Mexican-British Hero-in-Training. Her parents, her, and her little brother moved to Japan from the South-Western USA after the retirement of Allmight to try and help fill in his large absence, and to aid in the rescue efforts happening on the site of the battle.

Alice transferred into UA into class 1-B through the foreign exchange student program, though with some difficulty due to the language and time-zone differences, and thankfully has made friends. Her little brother was transferred to a local elementary school and quickly gained a reputation for being a trouble-maker, due to his quirk allowing him to slip through walls, smell and hear better than his classmates, and have a powerful bite. In addition, because his big sister is making her way towards being a hero, he's already started crafting a hero persona; El Chupacabra.

Her parents are having lots of success integrating into the local hero scene, especially with rescue teams. Her mom's (hero name La Llorona) quirk activated after she disappeared in a flash flood. She is functionally a ghost, being able to walk through solid objects, move completely silently, and phase in and out of corporeality, though she has the ability to interact and touch the living. She also has a slight silver tongue, where she can influence people to stop or freeze in their place when she cries, but that may just be because she's literally a ghost and that's terrifying to encounter unexpectedly. Physical weapons don't tend to hurt her unless they are blessed. Otherwise, she can only be hurt by attacks made directly from living flesh (such as a punch or kick). Her dad's (hero name Barghest) quirk gives him a monstrous appearance, similar to that of an anthropomorphic black dog or werewolf. Along with this he has a heightened sense of smell and hearing, a powerful bite, a high stamina, and twice the strength of a normal man. He's also massive and eats enough for two people. He sometimes enjoys eating stuff from the trash because of course he does he's a gigantic dogman. Yes he does dig holes in the yard and you can get him to fetch. Also, he's related to Lewis Carroll. Just straight up actually related to him. Together, they are able to scout, track, and take down opponents. They also make an amazing rescue team, as La Llorona's non-corporeality and Barghest's senses combine to make quick work of locating and often rescuing people trapped in buildings or rubble.

Back to Alice! Alice's quirk, which she calls Cheshire Cat, allows her to make some or all parts of herself invisible. In addition, she has the ability to enthrall people when she goes only partially invisible, but this power is relatively weak, and she doesn't use it often. With training, she can become completely incorporeal. The invisibility extends to anything that contains her DNA, but the further the item is from her, the less control she has over it. Because of this, her hero costume is made out of fiber spun from her fur. Her fighting style is stealthy and cat-like, prioritizing speed and misdirection over brute force. She's trained in hand-to-hand combat by her dad and uses her invisibility to gain the upper hand in fights.

Alice is a huge horror movie buff. She especially loves slasher horror from the 80's and 90's, but is always a sucker for new stuff, especially if it's weird and a little goofy. She loves to customize her clothes and customize things for her friends too. She initially designed her hero costume with blue and white stripes, but realized it looked like the Argentine flag and switched it out for the more blatantly Disney pink and purple, which she initially didn't love, but it's been growing on her.

Back in Mexico, her Tia (hero name La Catrina) is actually super famous. She has the ability to rapidly grow and wilt plants and is basically one of the top heroes there due to her skill and professionalism. She uses her abilities in a sort of AOE swarm, ensnaring anyone who might cause trouble.

So. What now?

First we’ve got the bonus round, which I’ll post while the finals are still up, to make this week more entertaining.

After that I’m gonna be doing themed matchups between some submissions I liked that didn’t make it into the bracket. The first theme will be flag elements, think uruguayan vs argentinian sun of may. Then we’ll do myths, so el chupacabras vs la llorona, etc.

Then I’m thinking of doing a latine countries bracket. To decide the best one once and for all. (Plus maybe a bonus round where we pick our most hated country, like spain vs usa).

When that’s all done, I might do a latine ocs bracket! One person wanted to submit ocs a while ago and I’ve been thinking about it since.

Love me a bad cryptid documentary but Scariest Monsters in America on Tubi has inspired way too many extreme emotions in someone currently bundled up in bed with a category 5 migraine.

The intro? Very aesthetic. Loved the eerie cinematography and genuine horror-movie-grade creature shots. Until the flag montage happened and this one dude in shades dramatically turned around wearing one as a cape. I've laughed myself to tears.

My head feels like it wants to split open but #10 was "the Texas chupacabras" which is already a contentious topic for me. But one of the "professionals" who's providing information is simply labeled as "content creator" and refered to the creature as "the el chupacabras".
