Between Marc’s 2015 Cota qualifying and his 2019 Brno qualifying which one do you find more impressive. (Also, what made him such a good qualifier cause if I’m remembering correctly vale and Jorge are tied for number of career poles at 64 or something and Marc has 94 I think, did his riding style just suit fast 1 lap times?)
oh, I'm definitely more of a 2019 brno type of girl. 2015 is a fun bit, great sense of drama with the propped up bike and the sprinting and all that, good job keeping his head under pressure. but fundamentally once he gets to the line in time to do his lap, it's not all that surprising he pops it on pole at one of his specialist circuits. still, cool visuals with the bike buckling under him and everything, got the novelty value going for it. brno 2019 is more fun because it is genuinely just an exceptional performance even by his standards, and the whole session is enjoyable to watch with everyone unsure about what the right tyre call is. when they say it's started raining again!! people taking their umbrellas out while marc is clinging onto that dry line... when he does another lap and goes even faster... idk, I do enjoy a proper good mixed/wet performance anyway, that one was definitely memorable. it's also the session where he pisses off alex rins, prompting rinsy saying that marc doesn't respect other riders, so it gets an automatically boost for me in causing some much-needed drama
as for why he's such a good qualifier - well, you mention the record vs valentino and jorge, but given the respective scopes of their careers I don't think it's quite right to group them together. the tiers basically go casey/marc, then jorge somewhere in the middle, then dani/valentino at the bottom. (also, I have the ghost of jorge lorenzo on my shoulder telling me to set the record straight: he ended his career on 69 poles to valentino's 65.) not to be facetious, but the reason why marc was so good at qualifying is that... well, look, he's just an incredibly gifted rider. he's fast. or so I've heard. you wouldn't really describe him as more of a saturday than a sunday man either - he was just very well-rounded. both marc and casey were very adept at throwing the bike around the circuit whatever the conditions... just kind of that x factor that allowed them to consistently hustle up a fast lap in every situation. if anything, it's valentino who was the outlier here in terms of career achievements vs qualifying prowess - he was the one who was just such an exceptional racer that any slight shortcomings as a qualifier only ever cost him later in his career (where his qualifying did begin to drop off, but that is also an age/format thing). obviously still a very good qualifier by normal standards... it was just never his forte. valentino had a career long preference towards harder tyres (which is partly a height + weight thing in terms of getting heat into the tyres), plus he was generally at his strongest late in races when the grip of the tyres has gone and it was a lot more slippery for everyone. his working process was also a bit more... hm, incremental. languid, shall we say. than marc's and especially casey's, who of course was always the guy who was fast everywhere immediately. the way valentino went about things, he was more prone to pulling some pace out of the bag last minute - plus prioritising race set-up, playing to his strengths and banking on a decent qualifying result to be enough to keep him in the mix. and jorge's somewhere in the middle where he WAS very good at stringing together a fast lap and was also super consistent about putting that thing on the front row - just not casey/marc good - because... well, in this rather potent group of riders, that's roughly where he falls by most metrics
bit more talk about this here, but in terms of actual stats... here's how it shakes out (this is just for premier class starts and is already a little out of date for marc, I'll update some of these spreadsheets once the season's done)
Tumblr media
and just for seasons where they were top five in the championship standings, to limit it to the broadly competitive seasons
Tumblr media
obviously you still have to apply a little context here - for instance it'd be fair to say that casey had tougher competition on average in qualifying than either marc or valentino. but like. just to give you a broad sense of where they're at

Listened to The Race's MotoGP podcast as per usual and man, when it comes to either Marc, Alex or Pecco I just can't get behind Simon Patterson 's takes.
Like Pecco is a championship contender but not Alex? Alex isn't consistent enough apparently, but mister Bagnaia with 8 DNFs last year who can't even best him since Alex got on the GP24 in the post-season test is?? Pfft. Also the take that because it took Alex 5 years to get that Moto2 championship it means he isn't that good. Did Pecco get even one Moto3 championship in the 5 years he had in that class? No.
The "mr Sunday" guy who needs everything to line up just right will beat Marc at some of the European tracks because he is somewhat strong there? Pecco, who is renowned for making a step from Saturday to Sunday but can't get better than third so far? It's like he expect Pecco to be able to "find something" from a Saturday to a Sunday and Marc to stand still. Also, even if Pecco gets a race win or three, do you really think Marc will finish worse than second or maybe third? Unlikely.

F1 Reddit talking about a joint MotoGP/F1 race weekend, which seems logistically impossible to me
- there wouldn't be enough garages for teams, there often isn't enough already for all the moto2 and moto3 teams
- the F1 tyres would mess up the track for the motogp riders
- there wouldn't be enough time for all the practice sessions
- bike and car marshaling is VERY different, for this weekend to work, they would need two sets of Marshalls
- there would need to be 2x race control, 2x media presence
- people who are only fans of motogp wouldn't pay to go, considering the price discrepancy between f1 and motogp
I think the people suggesting this aren't taking Moto2 and Moto3 into account, they're imagining an F1 weekend with MotoGP as a support class.
Interestingly, no one on the MotoGP reddit seems to be suggesting it

- Brackwood MotoGP AU -
As the two rookie riders on the grid, expectations are high for both Aeron and Davos to show their great talent on the bike. Aeron being more of a strategist, who wins his races by outsmarting his rivals on track, whereas hotheaded Davos is usually the one to just ride his opponents off the track. They’ve clashed before in both Moto3 and Moto2 classes and are known for their rivalry, which has cost both of them the last championship.
But when a shoulder injury forces Aeron to miss two races, he is surprised to find none other than Davos by his side, taking care of him, helping him with his training and keeping his company. Perhaps… they don’t hate each other after all. Perhaps they could even be friends… or lovers?
- - -
This is super rushed, I’m so sorry I don’t have more. I would looove to write this AU properly, but I don’t have the time for a fully fleshed out story right now, so this little snippet got to do it. I know many people love Formula One / racing driver AUs in general but hear me out on this one… Davos and Aeron definitely got more of a MotoGP / motorcycling vibe to them. Like, I can just see them going full Valentino Rossi vs Marc Marquez on each other. I know their on track rivalry would be insane.

i present the worlds first malex edit (blurb below the cut)
“you’re hiding.” max spoke quietly, his teenage voice heavy with an accent.
alex shakes his head and bites his lip, hard, to stop himself from crying then and there. his arms are crossed tightly over his chest, trying to close himself off and shrink away.
max watches him with sad eyes that couldn’t quite understand alex. not in the way he wanted to. alex wasn’t easy like that.
the spaniard sighs. “i’m an open box,” there’s a pause as he swallows down tears. “maybe you’re not looking.”
in three quick strides, max is in front of alex so they are face to face. “i am fucking seeing, alex. i am!” he argues.
alex, again, shakes his head.
“you don’t understand. why don’t you understand? are you even trying, alex?” max says, throwing his arms in the air as if alex is some sort of mad man. that’s what he seems like to max right now.
“maybe i don’t want to.” alex defends, refusing to look into max’s eyes.
max freaks out.
maybe he wouldn’t if it wasn’t this situation.
but this wasn’t any situation.
it would determine the rest of their lives.
“do you want me? want us?” max asks, quiet now as he pushes down his anger. “because you’re going to have to understand if you want us.”
alex doesn’t know what to say anymore. he knows how important this is not only to max, but to himself as well.
because soon they won’t just be upcoming prospects in junior categories. ones who’s activities and relationships weren’t closely monitored by the media.
no. it was 2015 and soon max would go to formula one. alex had known for a long time. and soon alex would be making the move from moto3 to moto2. though that wasn’t as prestigious as formula one, he was still climbing to the top.
“i do want you.” alex’s quite voice mutters, daring to speak. “but i..” he trails off.
“but what?” max croaks, hesitating on taking alex’s hand into his own.
for a third time, alex’s head swings back and forth. “marc doesn’t know about this.” he breathes.
max knew what that meant. marc was everything, he was it all. if marc didn’t know, then no one did.
alex was already under the pressure. marc had already began the starts of what would be a fruitful career, one for the history books. he had done all of that before alex even made it to the premier class, and he had a lot to live up to.
did he want to be the gay one? the one to be laughed at and ridiculed?
“you know how complicated this is.” alex reminds max, who nods. “maybe that’s why it’s good.” max responds.
and alex just looks at him. he doesn’t understand how the complexity of their affair could be anything good. was it good?
though the distance between alex and max was already less than an arms length, maybe a forearm, alex takes a step forward. their hands brush together now.
max watches as alex takes his hands to max’s face, then pulls their faces together.
the kiss is gentle and understanding. max’s lips find alex’s in a way that is so practiced it’s become second nature.
max’s hands come to alex’s waist as he pulls them fuller together, then presses alex against the wall of the garage. holding him there. just in case he runs away.
just for this moment, it might work out. max knows it will. alex has his doubts.
alex breathes, maybe disappointed, as max breaks the kiss. a string of saliva connect the both of their lips for a moment before it falls.
“i want to love you.” alex says, then rushes out the next words. “and i do! i love you lots, you know that. but is this worth it?”
“i think so.” max nods. alex nods too.
.
two weeks later, max debuts in formula one after replacing the previous toro rosso driver. this was the start of his career.
following max’s debut, he announces something that’ll forever be more important than racing, than winning.
that thing was he and alex.
to no one’s shock, the first person to congratulate the young racing couple was marc marquez.
max was in malaysia, where he would later score his first career points, breaking records in just a few races.
alex was sitting on the edge of marc’s bed. the older brother had an arm slung around his little brothers shoulders.
“are you mad?” alex sniffles quietly. “i know you said you weren’t. but i feel like you are.”
marc laughs in spite of himself, a quite sound that only said how silly it was for alex to think that. “how could i?” he smiles, looking at alex.
because once he was nineteen years old, and once he knew what it felt like to struggle the way alex did.
“i see you, alex. and i always will.” marc assures. “you will be everything i never was. and the first thing is brave.”
brave.
alex smiles softly, wiping his eyes. it’s silly to cry.
how could he be upset? he’s on his way to the premier class, to be a legend. he has the best brother in the world and the most supportive boyfriend ever.
and it would all work out.

hello our foremost motogp tumblr scholar i am back again with a question if you can find it in your heart to answer if not absolutely understandable
this is not your job i wish i could pay you
do you know if there have been other physical fights in motogp like obvs we know vale once punched biaggi (hilarious but insane), and marc has been attacked by thos fuckass journalists if you can call them that, and i have seen maverick and pecco get into a little slap fight
but have there been any others? like physical altercations
like has anyone ever tried to fight marc etc
also!!! if u have a moment, is there beef with alex and luca? i thought maybe there was old beef but....unclear
anyway anyway also you write the most beautiful fics i think i reread some of them at least once a week in times of trouble they call to me
much love goodbye for now sorry im in your dms asking you for primary sources like you run the marc marquez library
smackdown lezgo... most of it is confined to the lower classes tbh like this isnt NASCAR people get really mad when people start goin crazy and the press clutch their pearls (DISCLAIMER: I BELIEVE VIOLENCE IS NOT THE ANSWER TO SPORTING WOES)... um theres this incident where two engineers blocked a moto3 rider from exiting pitlane and catching a tow from their guy and they get PUSHED, and then this incident from valencia 2022 where two riders just kinda start throwing hands post-crash and tbh theres a lot of stuff like that bc theyre mostly teenagers... theres also ex vr46 academy guy romano fenanti, who grabbed a competitor's race lever during misano in 2018 when he was racing in moto2. he ALSO kicked nicklas ajo's bike out from under him during a practice start in 2015, and there was also allegedly some drama w uccio i've screenshotted below that SENDS ME... can you imagine this guy around that stable of sensitive little gay boys. can you imagine this guy around celestino vietti
Tumblr media
as for the premiere class its as you said: vale's long legs finding their way into people's fairings a couple times and the biaggi mosquito incident, as well as casey stoner smacking randy de puniet in 2011 for cruising on his line and nearly causing a collision, aleix smacking franco morbidelli in fp2 in qatar 2023, and then more moto3esque heat of the moment post crash yelling stuff like jack miller getting up in uh. also franky's face after they crashed last year at jerez and maverick vinales flashing the middle finger to bez's limp rag-dolled body post high speed aero crash at philip island and as you mentioned ALSO maverick getting slappy with pecco in le mans in 2023. the blood is up the brain is not working and we see some less than flattering moments... SPORTS ! no one has tried to fight marc as far as i know (sepang nonwithstanding....), but thats all off the top of my head and there's definitely more, so anybody feel free to chime in !

I think my biggest beef with the new press conference format in MotoGP is that they refuse to utilize their world champions
We have 5 premier class world champions in MotoGP (although one is not there) and you put 2 teammates (sure, just so happen to be premier class world champions) and ONLY have them for your opening press conference
This isn’t even touching on us losing moto2/3/E riders in these press conferences. We just had a DOMINANT moto3 world champion where he broke records that are a decade+ old. Nothing

i 100% agree with you on moto2 and moto3 titles being counted, but i do think that part of the issue is that only nine of the 22 riders on the grid don't have any kind of championship title. the sheer saturation of moto2/3 titles has led to them being undervalued in addition to how advancement through the classes is now being treated as the only way to have a successful career in motorcycle racing (kinda like how racing for wsbk is seen as a lesser career than motogp instead of its own thing)
I do get where you're coming from. It makes sense, but these riders are supposed to be top of the sport, the cream of the crop. Why are we changing the way titles are counted just to make nine riders look better?
They aren't children needing participation prizes.
Also the comparison of wsbk to motogp is so stupid like its comparing indycar to f1. They may be similar but one is not a stepping stone to the other.

I had a late night though last night that the moto3 needs to be brought up to at least 400cc.
A. Because the MotoGP and moto2 are about to become very close with 850cc and 765cc.
And B. Because we are seeing far too many moto3 world champions struggling to move up out of moto3 because they are clearly all small bike riders that just do not adjust to the bigger bikes.
And I totally understand that not everyone is going to be good on a bigger bike, but we are seeing far too many "world class" riders that just... Aren't that world class

ok, so i keep seeing stuff and tbh, it puts me off but i want to give benefit of the doubt.
so. where would YOU have me start on learning how moto gp works. i don't mean shipping. i will go left field with that shit myself, hell, i'm out here in my georgenando canoe. but understanding the sport.
you know, stuck here between should not have to give reasons and fuck it. bestie has bikes. i've watched some stuff. i find it very interesting. i'm not here bc f1 soley. but any time i've watched there is just so much to take in? when i got into f1 i had my friend on msn explaining. holding my hand if you will.
also yes i'm prepared to be labelled a glory hunter as i am inevitably drawn towards the small spanish war criminal. i have a type.
so do you have a primer? links? any news articles that really break it down?
ok so.
I personally got into MotoGP through my best friend who didn't explain a lot to me, just told me to try and get it (he's bad at explaining things)
I tried to read about it on wikipedia first, just to get a general idea of the sport and you know, teams and riders.
I think I can break something down for you, but it's mainly the structure of the sport itself rather than it's story, for that you can ask or read @muxas-world blog because that's where I at first got infos here on tumblr.
SO.
The weekend is structured on three days like F1, we got one Free Practice on Friday and then a Pre-Qualifying session called Practice in which the ten fastest gain direct access to Q2 on Saturday.
Saturday has another round of Free Practice and then Quali, divided in Q1 where the riders out the top ten on the previous day fight for the first two position to access Q2 with the other ten, then it's down to the fastest. After this there's ALWAYS the sprint, unless particularly strange scenarios (extreme weather) and it gives circa half the points of a normal race, it's fully valid for the championship and it DOESN'T determine the day after's grid, it stays the same as the first one.
On Sunday we race. There's no mandatory pit stops in MotoGP, unless it's raining and riders gotta switch to a wet bike, which is very funny cause you see these crazy guys hopping from a bike to another and try to regain positions.
Teams can have wildcards during the season, meaning riders (usually test riders) who replace one of the two official riders for an ENTIRE WEEKEND, not like F1 where it's usually just FP1, and this year they changed rules so that only certain teams can have wildcards, Ducati is completely excluded by it because they're 4 teams combined (as in Ducati gives engine to 4 teams: Ducati Lenovo and Pramac which use a 2024 bike, Gresini and VR46 which use a 2023 bike) and honeslty there was another reason but I currently am fighting sleep to answer you and can't remember
Points are assigned from the 1st to the 15th place, one additional point for the fast lap.
Tows, crashes and show are much more likely to be than in F1, especially crashes are far more frequent, obviously not cause riders are bad, but because it's easier to loose a bike going 360km/h ratehr than a car at that same speed.
Also, here Moto2 and Moto3 hold a higher value than F2 and F3 do in the Formula 1 concept of it all, championships won in those classes ARE COUNTED as championships, so Vale for example, a 9 time World Champion IS NOT 9 times MotoGP world champion, 9 in the championship won together in MotoGP and what back then was 125/250cc (currently Moto 3 and 2, actually with even more cc)
It's important to watch these series cause they really give you and insight on A. how actually crazy these guys are B. how many talents there are out there
sorry I can't really tell you more cause if you wan the history of the sport i'm not the one to talk you well about it, but I hope I helped, also sorry if I don't include links but I don't really know where to get real infos, I just learnt here on tumblr, I recommend you do the same :)
