Fanbinding: The Desert Storm (series) by @blue-sunshine-mauve-morning

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!

This is 1 of 2 posts for today, a massive project that I have hit a significant milestone for: completion of both my & the author's 15-volume set of the 1.1 million word The Desert Storm. This is the fic series that got me into Star Wars as an actual fan.

Four years after Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi Order, a grieving, struggling Ben Kenobi finds himself inexplicably taken back in time, crashing headlong into the foundations of fate. Grasping hope and vengeance with both hands, Ben rebuilds his identity and seeks to change the course of history: by saving Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi Order, the galaxy - and just maybe saving Obi-Wan Kenobi along the way.

My design for this typeset was significantly influenced by mem, who had begun a typeset before me and selected black & white images for the title pages, a trend I continued.

As this fic series has meteliculous attention to both canon & EU lore, I stuck with aurebesh characters for titles wherever appropriate, which occasionally gave me some fun opportunities for chapters & tables of contents like this:

For scene dividers, I used a image you can interpret either as twin suns, or as an eclipse.

While I committed to a more classic and less elaborate design for this series, I still rounded & backed every volume in the set. "Editioning" high numbers of similar books like this is often considered in bookbinding circles as necessary to practice skills (I am at 37/45 volumes), and I can certainly say that I have gotten much better at a number of things along the way. The largest book in this series is 616 pages; the smallest, 160 - and I needed to round & back both.

Further thoughts...

Blue_Sunshine (the author) has a fantastic skill for foreshadowing; reread of this series are a must. On top of that, character relationships are consistently and realistically fleshed out and developed. And critically for a "go back in time" story, Blue has a wonderful grasp of the dominoes - what changes trickle down and ripple out; and how that could come back to bite some people. Finally - if you live a badass Obi-Wan Kenobi, this is definitely a fic series for you. Also Blue is a lovely person & our little bits of correspondence has been such a bright spot for me.

Dracula Daily Digest: May 5

Annotations:

Jonathan is back in business which is to say he keeps writing down recipes.

I saw this posted somewhere else but the number one thing about reading Dracula is just appreciating the dramatic irony of all the characters in Dracula not knowing they're characters in Dracula. Case in point: "(Mem., I must ask the Count about these superstitions)" in regards to the landlady and the coach driver discussing vampires and the occult. Like, Jonathan, you've got a big storm coming.

Speaking of big storms coming, uhh, Jonathan, let's think about our life and the decisions that led us to this point. A crowd just "made the sign of the cross and pointed two fingers towards [you]." That's nOT GOOD.

We have some more Jonathan characterization which is to say further emphasis on his curiosity. Even with all the locals acting like he's a dead man walking, he's able to become so entranced in the countryside that he forgets about all the bizarre happenings of the last three days. He even gets distracted in his distraction by sharing fun trivia about the region! He's too precious for this world, and this preciousness is 100% being established for some juicy character contrast later.

I can sense something significant in Jonathan being offered so many outs by the people surrounding him. Of course there's the immediate significance of "hey idiot that's Dracula's castle you're going to, I'm a human person with an at least half-functioning conscience and I don't want you to die," but I feel like there's some thematic significance that I'm too tired to legitimately ponder.

Another top comedy moment: Dracula pretending to be a service worker.

"...a long, agonised wailing, as if from fear." I am the number one fan of this imagery. Holy cow. Stunning. I don't even know why I like it so much. I think it's because of the chilling tone it helps to establish, but honestly it could be just how classically "horror" it reads.

Initially I thought that Jonathan just kind of brushing off Dracula's weird little Road Moments was really confusing and frankly dumb on his part, but it's actually made more sense to me on this read through, particularly with my emphasis on the "otherness" of this world. Over the last three days, we've seen Jonathan be constantly bombarded with strange and unsettling and unfamiliar behaviors, all of which he seems to be simply chalking up to regional differences. He doesn't find Dracula's behavior on the road to be dangerously odd because he's already been inoculated to confusing behaviors by the townspeople.

"I stood in silence where I was, for I did not know what to do." Me too, bud, me too.

I find Dracula's first explicit introduction to be very uncanny. I think he falls really interestingly into the uncanny valley. He's described in a far more traditionally western way than the rest of the setting so far, which puts Jonathan and by extension the reader into much more familiar territory, but there's something off about him that raises our hackles a bit. His clothes, though nice and more familiar, are all black without a speck of color. His hair, though neatly trimmed, is starkly white. A really concise example of this contrast can be found in Jonathan's description of his speech: "...in excellent English, but with a strange intonation...." Dracula is simply so close and yet so far from Jonathan's known world that he is able to plunge into new depths of his unknown world.

This unsettling nature is only emphasized by Jonathan's later careful examination of the Count's appearance. There is something viscerally upsetting to me about the way Dracula is described here, and that's definitely on purpose. This description also serves to establish a physical baseline for Dracula (specifically his "general [affect of] extraordinary pallor"), the contrast of which will be used to create creeping horror later on in the novel.

Dracula's comments about the wolves and their "music" also helps establish that uncanny contrast I talked about earlier. Up until this point, the Count has been a welcoming and fairly normal host. These comments of his serve as an additional reminder to Jonathan that he is not in a familiar place, and certainly not a safe one.

"I doubt; I fear; I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul." Glad to see that that famous Jonathan Harker Repression was able to make an appearance.

Sorry for the longer notes. My brain was absolutely flowing in terms of stuff to yap about today so I had a grand time. Today is also definitely a really important moment in the story because you know things are about to get real when you meet your titular character.

Finally more pics of the boy. He is my second semi-original creation after Susie. Details of patterns used and yarns under the cut.

Hat (and the rest of the outift) is removable. I moved the heart higher up after taking the first batch of photos, in total I had to re-take the pics three times (forgot to put on scarf for the second session 🫠).

Completely naked surprisingly looks less scandalous than with the robe yanked up to demonstrate the tail! 🫣 This is the only pic I took from the back apparently, so profound was my shame about the shoddy garment sewing. 😬

I've been in various work / boardgame / Deltarune / Hades 2 / Jigglypuff-making -induced fugue states since making and gifting him so writing this up took a while but since I deliberately aimed to use different types of yarn for him I have actual notes:

Materials

body: Wool & the Gang Sugar Baby Alpaca in Snow White. I wanted something that would make him super soft and reduce appearance of haps between stitches (my previous experience of crocheting in white being with 8/8 cotton which made me want to cut my hands off and die). This yarn did not achieve that, and is also not 'snow white' (more off white / creamy imo). It is also the only yarn I have bought so far that is kind of stinky - even in try dry state, but when wet it makes the whole house smell of wet dog for days. Real gremlins situation, can't recommend. I will try to make something wearable with it next and see if it achieves superior softness.

hat/robe: Cardiff Cashmere Classic in Swatch. Absolutely lovely to work with, quite spenny but worth it. If I fancy myself an advanced maker (thoughtful, deliberate, justifiably charging £5000 a piece etc) at any point I may switch to this yarn completely.

scarf: Knitting for Olive Merino in Pink Daisies. It's only a simple rectangle so I didn't observe much but it seemed pleasant to work with. I may try it as a primary material for something once I manage to reduce my current mountains of yarn situation.

He would NOT be complete without the glasses 🥺 - I got them off ebay from this seller.

Patterns

Much like Susie the lil fella would not exist without Bogusia!! 👏

The body construction is kind of standard for her - but Alligator is actually the closest (I used the teeth as part of the snout).

The hat is from The Wizard Crow and was my fave part to make - amazing what some decreases and increases can achieve.

I kiiiiiinda wanted to base the outfit on Druid Bear but completely failed with the sleeves. :/ Better luck next time.

Only the ears are not a Bogusia knockoff being a Rico Sadie the Sailor dog element instead. 😅

Happily, he has been saved from a life in a plastic bag in a box by @bleakoutlo and is now happily spending time surrounded by flowers and sunshine (manifesting Deltarune chapter 7 ending 🙏 )

I am tired of this "Aqua doesn't love Akane" quote.

Ah yes the classic quote I see everywhere, everyday and everytime and again "If I had a dim for every Aquakana shippers saying Aqua doesn't love Akane I'd BE RICH 🤣✨🥳" These are the main reasons why they think Aqua doesn't love Akane

Because let's be real after this chapter was published all the toxic Aquakana shippers began saying "HE DOESN'T LOVE AKANE". Don't sugarcoat it and say it not true cause it is. U>U But anyway, I am trying to break it down to you. Basically, I say He does.

I have many reasons why I think saying Aqua doesn't love Akane is a lie but let's start with the obvious "He was just using her" This is the BIGGEST LIE I HEARD ALL YEAR EVEN AQUA LIED ABOUT IT!! Yes He intended to use it at the beginning for his revenge but the man wanted to quit revenge in Chapter 71 and then later he started to date Akane for real in Chapter 77 he definitely wasn't just using her but Akane described it best for me.

If he didn't love her why was he so concerned about her safety? Last time I checked the person he was willing to avoid for safety reasons is Kana. So let's travel back in time will we all the back to season 1 he was saved Akane's life and after that he had the idea save Akane's reputation with clips of Love Now showing how they view Akane and he had a smile. And I am gonna go even further and say this, if he doesn't care about Akane then why her being safe and saving her reputation was apart of Aqua's happy moments in season 2

and Later in the chapter Aqua said basically said this

if this isn't love then sir I don't know WHAT IS THEN! To prove my point even more Aqua said this. "Now I don't have to worry about putting Akane in danger or getting her hands dirty" meaning he did this to protect and not because he didn't love her. Which means he putting Akane on the same level as Kana. Pushing her away because he cares about her or should I say because he loves her. Also side note if Aqua don't care about Akane then why did he comforted during season 2? "The anime didn't have to go that hard, but they deliberately set up this parallel. It isn't only that Akane and Aqua are dressed as Saya and Touki, they are behaving the part, too. Aqua is there to reassure her that she did nothing wrong, and to have her back so she can have the result she wishes for. Just like Touki with Saya." By @skania Now there more to this, know that he cares about her but is he happy with her. Now, the answer is still FUCKING YES. Let me explain.

We know that the thought of Akane's being safe and her reputation being saved is enough to make him happy right which means he cares about her but what about Akane herself? Well season 2 practically answered that for us. Because when we saw Aqua's happy moments we saw Aqua's first date with Akane being there which means Akane makes him happy. Not just Kana but also Akane makes him happy and that important because if Akane makes him happy that shows how much Akane means to him.

Basically if I am correct which I am U_U, Akane's safety and Akane herself equal this face. And that not hard to believe because when Yuki and Mem cho was teasing about which Akane he likes this was his expression. So it really not hard to assume he was like this because of Akane because like I said before Akane's safety and Akane herself makes him happy as seen in season 2.

Now let expand more into season 2 because let focus on this scene more especially him coming to comfort Akane cause she feel bad about making Kana hide, Aqua comes and tell her that it isn't her fault and Kana doesn't know herself as well as she might think like I said before why Aqua do this if he don't care about her whatsoever. But more importantly when Akane said "You know I don't know want to win that way" he smirked say "In that case we'll drag him into the spotlight together." Why would he smile at Akane like that if he wasn't happy with her or at least liking her determination.

Also another thing

WHY WOULD HE SMILE AT AKANE DURING THE INTRO IF HE WASN'T HAPPY WITH HER!! And Aqua said something after he broke up with Akane which prove he was happy with her. Aqua saying "Those happy days are over." Happy days meaning his days of dating Akane which means he was happy dating Akane and those days meant something to him, and I think it even stretches to the Toyko Blade Play Arc and Private Arc.

So when he said, "I took a wrong turn." I don't think he meant in the way you guys thinking like he regretted dating Akane if anything he suggested he shouldn't have quit revenge, but not because he regretted dating Akane. Also in chapter 143, he said "I've lied to too many people, I've hurt many people with my selfish requests, how can I smile now?" Noticed that one of the people there was Akane. He probably regretted hurting her. Probably regretted lying to her as well.

Also, if he didn't love her why did he help her ? Credits to @skania

And I already talked about him helping Akane out to drag Kana out. Since Akane don't want to win against that Akane. Notice something HE ALWAYS HELPING AKANE NOT ONCE HE USED HER!! The only times he used her was to find his father and that didn't go well and Goro's body.

That is true, all of this is true instead of finding initial he end up opening up to Akane.

Another thing the hug he definitely fell in love with her or at least affect by the hug because again "Remember when Aqua was wondering what to do with Akane before he made the decision to use her one more time he was thinking about the hug aka thinking about his feelings for Akane and wanting to date her for real but then he thought no it's better to break up with her then to hold her back ." "not only that but Aqua did decide to use Akane one last time but that decision wasn't made till he was wondering what he would do with Akane since he didn't want revenge anymore and IMMEDIATELY he thought to the hug with Akane proving that he has feelings for her and he wants to date her and Aqua already says Akane got close to him and accepted him and he wants to be with her and by her side." If Aqua didn't love Akane or at least like Akane why did the hug appeared when he was thinking what he should with Akane after revenge? He was obviously thinking of dating her or least his feelings for her till he knocked down the thought. And Aqua himself did say maybe it okay for him to be in love and again speaking about his feelings for Akane and maybe it okay to date her. Considering the fact that hug did appeared in his mind when thinking about what do with Akane I absolutely think "But I thought it was okay now, so I'll think about it carefully even though it's little too late." THIS LINE IS ABOUT AKANE.

I always talked about Aqua's words to Akane and how he meant every word of it in my Why I love Aquakane post Part 1 and Part 2 but instead I am talk about Akane's words and the affect on Aqua to show Aqua likes Akane. Like example when Akane say "I'll help you kill them" Aqua's black star eye turned white.

When Akane hugged him saying "No matter what happens, i’m on your side, Aqua-kun. " Aqua reaction was this .

When Akane said this and said "Why do you need to bear responsibility for it? That's just wrong!" . He had a shocked expression.

And lastly for my last point why Aqua seemly have the same expression that he had during the hug when Akane said these words, when she experssed her opinions about Aqua.

If he didn't love Akane these words or actions won't affect him but they do. So clearly, he does love Akane since she clearly has an effect on him that not even Kana has.

And as you can see He cares about Akane, make her happy, she makes him happy and much more so if compared to Kana then he definitely does love Akane probably more than Kana.

I am not trying to say he doesn't like Kana I am saying he loves Akane just as much probably even more.

But anyway, that ends.

Also Bonus in episode 10 of Season 2 of Oshi No Ko not only we get to see Akane's text messages to Aqua showing how much she cares for him BUT WHEN AQUA WAS THINKING MAYBE IT OKAY FOR HIM TO BE FREE AND LIVE HAPPILY AKANE FREAKING APPERED! Showing that Akane does make him happy.

Mem's Twilight Cottage

A stone cottage at the edge of the forest, overlooking a big lake. A narrow, paved walkway leads down to the water. The front yard is filled with birds and flowers, the back has a huge vegetable bed. Both the front and back patio have plenty of places to sit, and a hammock or two to read or nap in. Sunlight flows in through the big windows, hitting the eating nook with enough seats for both residents and guests. The cottage is always filled with laughter, music, and good food.

I make a self-insert suited specifically to each f/o (including mood board, profile, how we met, and how we confessed) so make sure you check my self-insert pages for each ship !! This part is very new, though, so most of them are under construction right now (🚧). Please be patient, I'm working hard on getting them finished and I'll share them as soon as they're ready !!

MEM (owner) My room is light and airy, and always clean and tidy, with lavender walls and pink and teal accents. The shelves are filled with books, plants, and pretty knick-knacks, and a few cute plushies sit on the armchair in the corner. The heavy curtains have cutouts in star shapes and are often waving in the breeze from the open window. Picrew link

Mari @/littleplantfreak x IRL Mem Mari is the only visitor with her own personal space. Her room is controlled chaos with knickknacks and personal effects in the strangest places. The windows are almost always open for easy entry (because why use a door when you can use a window?) and the painted flowers on the sage walls blend in with the greenery outside. Her room is always set up with space for two people, the pillows and chairs mismatched to fit their respective owners’ tastes. Picrew link

Umemiya Hajime x Cat Café Owner Mem Hajime's room is a huge mess. Seedlings cover his desk and windowsill, books on gardening are stacked in piles on the floor. The walls are covered in Polaroid photos of his friends and family. His glasses are often left in the middle of an unmade bed, a dog-eared book next to them.

Even here, he can't stop himself from bringing work home. His bed is on the harder side, with navy blue covers. The only decoration is a set of Japanese swords hanging on the wall.

Jing Yuan x prima donna Mem 🚧 Jing Yuan's room is richly decorated with paintings, beautifully painted screens, pieces of art. His bed is big and fluffy, with more pillows than you can count. He has his windows cracked on even the coldest nights to leave access for his birds. His room is where visitors can most often find the resident cats.

Whereas Isa's room is a lot more subdued and tidied to perfection, books on psychology covering his shelves.

Mydei x archeologist Mem Mydei's room is -for a lack of better words- spartan. The furniture he has is of good quality, but the room as a whole lacks decoration. His walls are dark, his bed hard and covered in a crimson comforter. He prefers his curtains shut at all times, but he leaves his windows open all year round.

Inugami Teruomi x idol Mem Teruomi's room is yet another messy one. He loves soft things and has a collection of plushies won from carnival games. His bed is big and fluffy and hardly ever made, an animal print comforter bunched up at the foot end.

I have a MIGHTY NEED...

...to announce this.

A crossover AU, one that's a crack AU, cursed and self indulgent all at the same time.

It involves two of my fixations, two that are completely different yet I made this work anyway.

Invader Zim x Monsters vs Aliens. Yes you read that right. One, a peak cult classic, and another thing that is also that but also underrated. Details/ramblings about it are under the cut for those interested! :D

Now, here's how it works: a character gets hit by that dang quantonium filled meteorite, gets hauled off to a top secret government facility after the effects hit, and has a serious wake up call that perhaps the events of Enter The Florpus weren't a hallucination and about the existence of aliens as a whole. Poor Membrane.

But yeah he gets to see some old and new faces in Area 50-something, such as Dr. Cockroach having been his college roommate once upon a time, Membrane Labs being responsible for the creation of BOB, and it was by Membrane's authority that Link was fished out of the ocean and later sent to the facility (upon seeing the guy that sent him there, Link goes nuts with anger). So yeah he has a connection to all of his jailmates except Insectosaurus.

Also there's this thing about him being armless, as his cybernetics (rather painfully) fell off due to him outgrowing them during the you-know-what. Don't worry he still gets around okay, especially after he gets a new set issued to him by the government. This sorta helps ease his rage at his former "business partner" General Monger there's that too.

Random trivia deets:

In this AU he wears an outfit similar to Susan's, with the sleeves hanging loose for a while before he gets his new arms. His horribly scarred face (my headcanon) is also on full display much to his displeasure, and he doesn't care much for having white hair either.

BOB, after his creation in Membrane Labs, imprinted on his 'dad' as baby and thus is ecstatic to see him upon Membrane's arrival much to the colossal man's confusion.

Yes, Gallaxhar is still very much a thing in this AU, as is the showdown with the Robot Probe.

As for where Zim falls into all this, he'll be danged before he lets another alien destroy/enslave the humans before him.

When Mem was hit by the meteorite, it was right outside Membrane Labs. He pulls himself out from under it, and goes on with his day like it's a perfectly normal occurence... until he's giving a live presentation at least half an hour later. Oh boy.

It took being shot with over 10 oversized tranquilizer darts to knock him out. As for who called the government, it was just some random bystander in the audience.

Dib and Gaz witnessed the whole thing while watching TV at home before the signal gets lost, and both of them just turn to look at each other wide-eyed. ...then they later manage to cooperate and stage a rescue operation to get their dad out of wherever the government stashed him. By the time they manage to break in, Membrane and the other members of Team Monster have been dispatched to deal with the Robot Probe. Welp.

As for how Membrane feels about having his worldview shattered and the fact that he's huge, he kinda... shuts down for a while. Then, he snaps out of it when he starts to become worried for his kids. Then after he's finally reunited with them, he picks them up, and holds them close gently while silently crying. “The Lurianic Tree of Life” - based on the Sefer Yetzirah (“Book of Formation”), one of the earliest texts of Jewish mysticism (2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE).

Compared to the version of the Tree which appears in many Western esoteric texts, there is only one path between Malkuth (Earth) and Yesod (Moon). There are also diagonal paths between Binah and Chesed and Chokmah and Geburah, which do not appear in the Western Tree.

This also means that the assignment of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet to the 22 paths differs between the two versions.

The three Mother letters (Shin/Fire, Aleph/Air and Mem/Water) are assigned to the horizontal paths, which allow movement between the different pillars of the Tree.

The seven Double letters (attributed to the seven classical planets) are assigned to the vertical paths.

The twelve Single letters (attributed to the twelve signs of the Zodiac) are assigned to the diagonal paths.
