Enter the new LAUNCH X431 CRP919X BT OBD2 Scanner – a professional-grade automotive diagnostic tool that promises to revolutionize the way we interact with our vehicles, offering advanced features like CANFD, DOIP, and ECU Coding.
This blog post will explore what makes the LAUNCH X431 CRP919X BT a standout choice for workshops and serious DIYers, dissecting its core functionalities and highlighting its significance in the contemporary automotive landscape.
The Evolution of Automotive Diagnostics: Beyond Basic OBD2 For years, the term "OBD2 scanner" conjured images of simple devices that read generic trouble codes and maybe offered a handful of live data parameters. While essential, this basic functionality is now merely the tip of the iceberg. Modern vehicles employ sophisticated protocols and architectural designs that require diagnostic tools to be far more intelligent and adaptable.
The LAUNCH X431 CRP919X BT is not just an OBD2 scanner; it's a comprehensive diagnostic powerhouse. Running on Android 10.0 with a robust MTK chip, doubled memory (4G+64G), and a 6300mAh battery, it offers a user experience that is 5 times faster and smoother than previous generations. Its sleek design, intuitive interface, and wireless Bluetooth connectivity (via the new DBSCar VII VCI connector) provide unparalleled freedom and efficiency in the workshop. No more tangled cables or being tethered to the driver's seat – diagnose your vehicle from anywhere within a 33ft range.
Cutting-Edge Communication: CANFD and DOIP Explained Two of the most significant advancements in modern vehicle communication protocols are CANFD (Controller Area Network Flexible Data-rate) and DOIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol). The LAUNCH X431 CRP919X BT's support for these protocols is a major differentiator, future-proofing your diagnostic capabilities.
CANFD is an evolution of the traditional CAN bus protocol. While classic CAN was limited to a maximum data transfer rate of 1 Mbps and an 8-byte data payload, CANFD dramatically increases these limits. It can achieve speeds of up to 8 Mbps or higher and allows for data payloads of up to 64 bytes. This increased bandwidth and data capacity are crucial for modern vehicles equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving capabilities, and electric powertrains, which generate and process vast amounts of data in real-time. Without CANFD support, diagnosing these newer, data-heavy systems would be impossible. The CRP919X BT ensures you can communicate effectively with the latest GM vehicles from 2020 onwards, among others, that increasingly rely on this protocol.
DOIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol), on the other hand, revolutionizes diagnostic communication by leveraging Ethernet-based networks. Instead of proprietary wired connections, DOIP allows diagnostic tools to communicate with vehicle ECUs over an IP-based network. This brings several key advantages:
Higher Bandwidth: Ethernet offers significantly higher bandwidth than traditional automotive communication buses, enabling faster data transfers for complex diagnostic tasks, software updates, and firmware upgrades. Remote Diagnostics: With DOIP, diagnostics can potentially be performed remotely over an internet connection, offering greater flexibility and efficiency, particularly for fleet management or specialized workshops. Scalability: DOIP provides a more scalable and standardized approach to vehicle diagnostics, crucial for the ever-growing number of ECUs and interconnected systems in modern cars (e.g., BMW F and G Chassis, Jaguar, Land Rover from 2017 onwards, and Volvo from 2018 onwards). The LAUNCH X431 CRP919X BT's inclusion of CANFD and DOIP support signifies its readiness for the next generation of automotive technology, ensuring comprehensive compatibility with the latest and future vehicle models.
Unlocking Potential: ECU Coding and Bi-Directional Control Beyond reading and clearing codes, a truly professional diagnostic tool empowers technicians to interact with vehicle systems on a deeper level. The CRP919X BT excels in this regard with its ECU Coding and Bi-directional Control capabilities.
ECU Coding allows you to customize vehicle settings, activate hidden features, and adapt new components after replacement. For instance, you can:
Personalize vehicle settings for comfort and convenience (e.g., auto start/stop function, interior light duration). Match new ECUs or modules to the vehicle, ensuring proper functionality after a replacement. Perform component matching for various systems. Even retrofit features like a TPMS to older cars. The CRP919X BT supports online coding for popular brands like VW, Audi, and Skoda, and offline coding for VW, Audi, Skoda, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Land Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, and Toyota, providing immense flexibility for customization and repair. Bi-directional Control, also known as Active Tests or Actuator Tests, takes diagnostics a step further. Instead of just passively reading data, this feature allows the technician to send commands to specific vehicle components and observe their response. This is invaluable for pinpointing the root cause of issues, as you can directly test the functionality of:
Fuel injectors Solenoids Cooling fans ABS pumps And many more actuators. This capability significantly reduces diagnostic time and guesswork, enabling faster and more accurate repairs.
Comprehensive Coverage and Advanced Service Functions The LAUNCH X431 CRP919X BT boasts impressive vehicle coverage, supporting over 10,000 vehicles worldwide, from passenger cars to 12V pickup trucks and SUVs produced between 1996 and 2025. It provides dealership-level diagnostics, allowing users to delve into all available modules, including Engine, Transmission, ABS, SRS, BCM, TPMS, and many more.
Furthermore, it offers an extensive array of 35+ Reset Service Functions, streamlining common maintenance and repair tasks. These include:

When is the best case for HDMI over IP extenders?
IntroductionWhy use HDMI over IP in some cases? The image quality is noticeably worse than a classic HDMI twisted-pair extender. Let's see a few examples and answer this together.
When is the best case for HDMI over IP extenders?
Previously, we have repeatedly compared two types of HDMI extenders with each other:
HDMI over twisted pair cable
HDMI over IP extender
The second type also works over twisted pairs, but it has the additional ability to operate in populated local networks.
Upon reading our posts, you may think using the first type of extender is always better. After all, it is indeed better in many respects: ideal video quality, no transmission delays, and many supplemental functions. The only thing is to stay within the twisted pair cable length limits, usually up to 330 feet.
But it is only sometimes the case.
Sometimes, having a separate twisted-pair cable from the video source to the TV makes it impossible to install a transmitter and receiver of the first type. But suppose there are available wired Ethernet sockets somewhere near both installation spots. In that case, the extender of the second type is a good option.
Sometimes, installers plan on remaking an existing LAN, adding separate twisted-pair cables for video transmission of the first type, and turning to us for advice. The initial idea is to disconnect two sections of twisted-pair cable from the router:
from the video source to the router
from the TV to the routerand connect both lines together.
At first glance, we will see a twisted-pair cable from the video source to the TV. So we should be able to use type 1 extenders, right? Although it is theoretically possible, the probability is extremely low.
We will have the following connection between the transmitter and receiver: HDMI transmitter - patch cable - LAN socket - twisted-pair cable - connector - twisted-pair cable - LAN socket - patch cable - receiver.
The first type of extender is very picky about the cable's construction and the connections between the transmitter and the receiver. Firstly, one must use twisted-pair cable of a category no lower than specified in the manual. This is usually CAT6, CAT6A, or better. Secondly, there must be a solid piece of twisted-pair cable between the HDMI transmitter and receiver with no breaks or lower-quality connectors, like wall sockets.
The second type of extender works like any other LAN device. So, we can use LAN sockets, patch cords, routers, and switches.
Of course, expensive professional solutions with low video compression levels exist. The quality of the video output from the receiver is hard to distinguish from the original. The transmission delay is almost invisible to the human eye. Such equipment has strict requirements from the manufacturers in terms of IP-network parameters; they usually do not recommend using an existing network.
In our post, we will skip this case and look at more down-to-earth options for the average user.
So what are you going to do if laying a separate whole piece of twisted pair is not on the options list? First, you must determine what you will connect to the remote TV. Suppose this is a DVR located somewhere in the attic or garage. In that case, you can safely use an HDMI over IP extender connected to the existing LAN network.
Let's look at one of the devices of this sort and try it in real-world conditions. We'll use the INRIKS EX2073KVM extender as an example.
Device description
The INRIKS EX2073KVM is an HDMI and USB transmitter and receiver kit twisted-pair cable with a range of up to 390 feet. The kit operates "over IP," so the receiver can be connected to the transmitter with a single piece of twisted pair and via a local network.
The maximum video resolution is 1080p at 60 Hz.
In addition to video, the EX2073KVM can transmit a USB 1.1 signal, which is sufficient for a USB keyboard and a USB mouse.
Let's look closer at the package contents and the typical connection.
Visual overview
As usual, the HDMI over twisted pair extender INRIKS EX2073KVM is shipped in a standard gray box. The sticker lists the main parameters that the kit provides.
Having opened the box, we immediately see the transmitter and receiver in a separate tray.
The remaining components of the kit are located under it.
So, the INRIKS EX2073KVM kit consists of:
Transmitter unit - 1 pc
Receiver unit - 1 pc
DC 5V/1A - 2 pcs
USB Cable - 1 pc
User manual - 1 pc
The transmitter and receiver are of average size and feel substantial in the hand due to the case metal thickness.
The transmitter has the following connectors:
DC 5V power input
HDMI IN for connecting a video source (PC or DVR)
USB PC for connecting to a video source for remote control
3×LED indicators
LAN TX for twisted pair connection
Reset button
The receiver has the following connectors:
DC 5V power input
HDMI OUT for connecting a TV
2×USB for connecting the keyboard and mouse
3×LED indicators
LAN RX for twisted pair connection
Reset button
As you may have already noticed, the kit has minimal connectors for transmitting HDMI and USB keyboard/mouse interfaces over twisted-pair cables. This is true and emphasizes the device's one and only function.
Unlike many other INRIKS extenders, our kit has neither fixed nor detachable surface mounting brackets. We consider this a downside.
Having opened the top cover of the transmitter, we once again ensured that the metal that the case was made of was thick. Or rather, its upper part.
Next, we were a bit surprised. Inside, we found not one PCB, as is usually the case with such devices, but two. The boards are interconnected with a flat cable.
The receiver also has two boards.
The soldering quality is quite good. There are minor stains on certain elements. Most likely, there should be no impact on the operation.
The back side of the boards is less neat. There are minor stains that are already typical for the entire line of INRIKS equipment.
Testing
Initially, we decided to test the device under almost ideal conditions. Connect the transmitter and receiver with a single piece of CAT6 330-foot twisted-pair cable. We connected a laptop to the transmitter and a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the receiver.
After powering it on, everything worked within a few seconds. Because the laptop and the "remote" monitor are located nearby in our case, the eye notices a slight lag in the image on the remote monitor. This is typical for most HDMI over IP extenders. This delay is also felt when controlling the mouse, which causes slight discomfort.
We conclude for ourselves that this technology is not suitable for day-to-day working on a remote PC.
We measured the latency between the laptop screen and the remote monitor. It averaged 0.08 seconds.
As expected, the video quality on the remote monitor suffered a little. It is very difficult to notice the deterioration while watching the video. But when displaying menus and similar static images, sometimes the moire around some letters is slightly noticeable. This is due to video compression and decompression during "over IP" transmission.
The next step is to connect the transmitter and the receiver to our existing local network, according to the diagram below.

Please note that we used short patch cables to connect the transmitter and the receiver to LAN sockets.
After powering on the equipment, everything worked as expected in a few seconds, and the average latency value did not change.
Conclusion
In this article, we decided to show another subtle advantage of using an HDMI over an IP extender. Such devices are more forgiving when it comes to cable connections.
Therefore, if you manage to lay a separate twisted-pair cable of the required category, it is better to use an HDMI extender of the first type to get an excellent result.
If you are going to use an existing cable that someone else installed in the wall before you, you will most likely have to use the second type of HDMI extender, an IP-based one.
If you have no choice but to use an existing LAN, then the option here is obvious :)
The area of application of such extenders is also critical. This option can even be called optimal if you use them for CCTV (connecting a TV and mouse remote from the DVR).

So your internet is supposed to be fast but instead it is terrible, and you want to file a complaint about it.
SOME NOTES BEFORE WE BEGIN:
This is a guide to filing a free informal complaint to the United States FCC. I am not a lawyer. I am a nerd. This is NOT a guide to filing a formal complaint.
This guide is not for your average internet problems. There are a lot of reasons internet can be slow: a bad router or modem, wifi interference from neighbors with overpowered routers (try an ethernet cable!), your microwave getting in the way of the wifi signal (ethernet cable!), your Amazon Alexa eating up bandwidth sending everything you say to Amazon, your roommate binging Netflix on their terrifying 4K smart TV... Make sure the problem is coming from outside the home. Specifically coming from your internet service provider.
Contact your provider directly first. They do typically want their service to work. If they keep blowing you off, that's when you get out the paperwork.
Make sure you know the download and upload speeds you are paying for. (Yes, even if it officially only says "up to". If it is "up to 500 mbps" and you are getting 1 mbps that is a major issue.) These will typically be listed when you log onto your account on the ISP's website. You could probably also call and ask customer service, or even visit their office in person if you are scary and I'm afraid of you.
We'll begin our journey at the FCC Broadband Map
This is a government website that lists, for every address in the US, which internet providers are available, what kind of connection they use, and the maximum download and upload speeds they offer.
This is an excellent resource that I highly recommend checking when house/apartment-hunting, especially if you expect internet service to be part of your bills. It's not always 100% accurate, but it is an official record, so if you're getting less than you're paying for you have grounds to challenge it.
If your ISP's stats here are total ass (for example, if they use antique copper wiring that can handle a max 0.2 mbps upload speed) you'll probably be better off switching providers. Even the cheapest fiber or cable plans are going to be faster, better maintained, and more reliable than satellite or copper.
(Sorry, I got really distracted here because I was wondering who the fuck "Space Exploration Technologies Corp." is, offering high-speed satellite to the middle of nowhere. It's Musk. It's Musk and his telescope-ruining yacht-internet. Anyway.)
If your ISP looks good here, and your connection is still hot garbage, it's time to bother them about it.
Gathering data for the complaint
I approach this as a combination bug report and legal case. You'll want to be as detailed as possible. If your ISP doesn't think there's a problem, then they also probably don't know what the problem is, so the more evidence you can supply the easier it'll be to fix. Also, unhappy customer with lots of evidence is VERY scary.
If you get no internet at all, then there's not much data to gather. Just do your best to estimate what time(s) the internet went out and for how long. You might take screenshots of your lack of internet beside your computer clock, or your router's connection status page.
If your internet is only bad during part of the day, take note of when that is. Try to test it when it's working AND when it's not. Take screenshots of the results with your computer time/date visible. Remember that you'll get the most accurate reading when your computer is the only one using the network.
Your biggest tool will be speed tests. If you're here you have probably used this a lot by now. The classic speed test that most people use is Ookla's Speedtest.net. Some ISPs even use it themselves. I've heard claims that providers pump up your speeds to this site to pass these tests, but typically if your connection is that bad, it'll show anyway. (Mine sure did.)
If you don't like Ookla's speed test, Fast.com is another popular speed test by Netflix (make sure you press "show more info" to get the upload speed). There's others out there too, but imo the more mainstream the better if you're trying to back up a legal complaint.
Another, less common thing you can check for is packet loss -- this is when the information your computer sends or receives gets lost in transit (which is bad). This can result in a connection that is both weird and slow, sites loading halfway and proceeding to shit themselves, voice calls connecting but being unusable, etc. Here's a handy HowToGeek article on how to test for it. (Although instead of a random website url I highly recommend using a DNS server like 8.8.8.8 -- this is Google's DNS server which should be extremely fast to respond.) Typically packet loss should be less than 5%. More than than 10% is Bad.
You may also want to keep note of interactions you've had with your ISP if relevant (for example, if their happy-helpful-official-web-chat-support guy told you this was all because of an outage they expected to have fixed by June 1st, and every time you ask them about it, they just keep pushing it back). If your ISP is mega-evil and you think you might end up Actually Suing Them or something, make sure you have copies of bills, documentation of the speeds you are paying for, etc.
Locate that informal complaint page baybeeeee
The FCC's site for formal and informal complaints is here. I recommend reading some of their FAQ's and stuff.
You will want an informal internet complaint, which is free to file. That form is currently here.
Now write the complaint
Again, there's a good chance your ISP doesn't actually Think There's A Problem, let alone Know What The Problem Is, so you'll want to be detailed and to the point.
Pinpoint when the problem started to the best of your ability ("sometime between November 12-13" is fine if that's all you recall). If your connection is only bad sometimes, you'll want to specify when. Explain what rates you are paying for and what happened when you called the company. Be reasonably polite. We are presenting only facts here.
I also like to emphasize the problems this is causing, especially if they can be phrased as common things that a Scary Businessman would expect from the internet, and *especially* if they are things that could be interpreted as losing money. "This is unacceptable because I am completely unable to attend voice calls and video meetings" is a great one. "This prevents me from accessing the tools and videos on my employer's website" is also fun. This reminds your ISP of capitalism and lawsuits, which will give them scary nightmares.
Don't forget to add your screenshots of tests and any other useful attachments.
I suggest keeping a copy of the complaint and everything you attached to it for your own reference as well.
Note: that you will be contacted by your ISP about this! They are required to contact you within 30 days. They will send you a written response and might call as well for more info. Don't freak out.
Ideally this will at least get you in touch with someone in charge of Why Your Internet Isn't Working instead of a random call center employee. Plus the FCC is there to be menacing, now. Good luck!
#i am putting this together for one person but i figured more people might need it. so.#if you know more than me and i should add things pls let me know#fcc#informal complaint#internet complaint

Coping with Online Classes while Neurodivergent
(Mostly aimed at those with ADHD and Autism, as I have ADHD and NVLD)
Organization
If you aren’t already keeping a planner this is a great time to start, It will allow you to not only remember the overload of information you are getting but also to organize it. (Also don’t be afraid of modifying how you use your planners, I for example am now using a completely different planner than the one I have been using for the past 2 years)
Also It will help you keep track of time (especially now that everyday seems to blend together)
Google calendar is great as not only is it online (and you are able to keep it both on your computer and phone) but Zoom is also allowing teachers to schedule classes on through it so they show up automatically on you calendar
If you haven’t already joined/made a class group chat, DO IT! being able to ask classmates/friends for advice/help is going to be more important than ever now, I have been relying on mine to keep me accountable and attending my classes on time
It is completely reasonable to ask your teachers to set a “firm” schedule, ie “we only meet for classes on Tuesdays and assignments will always be due on Thursdays”. Even if this is only true in *most* cases it is still a huge step forward in establishing a schedule and a sense of normalcy.
Use Google Drive and Bookmarks to organize your digital resources, sorting them first by class then by type (textbook, questions, data sheet, etc.) or how ever else you deem appropriate. This will save you time and keep you from losing documents
Gmail allows you to add searchable and colour-coded labels to your emails, these are great to wrangle your now completely overwhelmed inbox. My teachers tend to send their Zoom invite emails out directly after class meaning I might not need them for entire week, so I now tag them “zoom” so when I’m scrambling a few minutes before class I can find them in one search
Coursework
do not be afraid to directly ask teachers how their marking criteria and curriculum have changed. Even if they are only able to give you an approximate answer, this should still help you prioritize your work and know how much time to give each assignment
also do not be afraid to tell teacher how/if you are struggling, many of us have spent years learning how to cope with a “normal” learning environment. Asking us to adapt all of our coping strategies and modifications in a few days is unrealistic and many teachers thankfully understand this
Also don’t be afraid to get creative with adapting your new coursework, If you usually answer questions orally you can use the speech to text function in Google Docs or submit audio of your answers via email
Productivity
DON’T DO YOUR HOMEWORK IN YOUR BED OR ATTEND CLASS FROM THERE. I know how tempting it is, but It’s amazing how much easier attending class is for me from my desk. Differentiating spaces helps you mind organize what you do where, you don’t have to have a desk just somewhere that preferably Isn’t your bed.
Set a schedule to follow during the week, but also be realistic with what you know you can and will accomplish. For example, I have to be in Zoom classes every morning at 8:35am, so I have to be up by 8 and be “presentable” (this is very low bar for me, it literally only means that I don’t look like I got mauled by raccoons) and have made myself breakfast and coffee by 8:30.
Take structured breaks at certain times of the day and go outside/open a window, eat, refill your water or just to simply take a break from the internet/screens.
Try using noise cancelling headphones or earbuds to limit the amount of outside stimuli, and arrange your desk so it is not visually overwhelming (ie. no huge piles of work or text books)
Zoom
Zoom is currently sensory hell for me and I haven’t seen a lot of information on what to do so here’s whats working for me right now
Asking for notes before class is a classic accommodation so don’t be afraid to ask your teacher, chances are they are already providing notes to someone else (If a teacher shoots you down ask a trusted friend for a copy of their notes, or to take turns note taking)
Ask your teacher to mute microphones during lectures and to only turn them on for discussions/questions, It’s amazing the amount of background noise this eliminates
Find the best place for internet in your living situation, or If possible switch to wired Ethernet (I went from 1.5-3 MBS to 150 MBS just by switching to a wired connection even though I was already less than 2M from a WiFi modem)
If it’s visual stimuli that’s the issue, Zoom let’s you choose if you only see your teacher/ how many of your classmates you can see at any given time and also lets you reduce the size of the window. It will also outline whoever is talking in lime green, to help direct your focus
download an audio mixer, this should give you the ability to cut the audio frequencies above and below the range of speech, while this won’t cut all the distracting noise it should reduce it and cut what sounds the most “artificial” (which I have the most issue with)
you can also download KRISP a program that does this for you (If you email them you can get it for free for the next six months)
Find ways to fidget that can help you focus, I for example have been knitting during class discussions because it not only helps me focus but the added input also helps me interrupt people less and listen better (other recommendations are Rubik’s cubes, stress balls or even doodling)
Don’t be afraid to turn off your camera for a few minutes to work or take a break, taking a break before you shut down is always better than after you do
also don’t be afraid to mute the class, If you already have the notes and understand them you are mostly there for the attendance/participation marks anyway
Now even though I advise talking to your teacher before you turn off/mute any part of the zoom I also understand that many teachers won’t be willing to make those accommodations and that most of this can be done easily without the teachers knowledge. As long as you are trying don’t feel guilty for adapting online classes to fit your specific needs.
Other Tips and Tricks
make friends with the SEA’s (Special Education Assistant’s or your equivalent) even if you don’t get support, they are having to adapt classes for their students and are able to offer an incredible amount of insight and help (they are also some of the most compassionate and determined people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing)
along the same vein make friends with other Neurodivetgent students, not only so you know what is working for others but also because the more people asking for help/accommodation the more likely you are to get it (never underestimate collective bargaining)
If you are new to self advocating or communicating adaptations through email take a look at Understood.org , they have amazing and simple to understand information on different learning issues in all ages from infancy to adulthood as well as common accommodations and why they are used. It’s an amazing tool to not only explain neurodiversity but also to find solutions and how to communicate them to others. They also now have an entire page on how to adapt to covid-19 as a student and as an educator
Finally do not be afraid to ask for help, everyone is going to need help and grace during this time, you do not need to be ashamed of it. (I personally am battling some shame over asking for more comprehensive accommodations during these times)

((Okay so apparently it is possible to set up Pokemon Renegade Platinum to play with **online multiplayer**. Which is super hype. If anyone wants to play with me either IC or OOC, let me know! You’d just need 2 things beforehand and I can help you set it all up: A wired connection (Ethernet) is technically optional, I think, but I don’t know how to set up the wireless version at all nor how it works/if it works. And a 4997 (otherwise known as rev1) version of pokemon platinum (I can’t help you find this unfortunately, but it shouldn’t be hard!) My renegade is also patched with the additional Classic Version and Speed Up patch so those might be necessary too for your game version (for anyone who might have previous saves!) but not any of the others (shiny patches are definitely save-compatible though, but idk about the others) If you’re interested hit me up in DMs!))

Meet the Mac
iBook G3/600 14 in. Early 2002 Model M8413
The latest addition to my collection is also the oldest. Introduced January of 2002 and discontinued May the same year, this model of Apple’s iBook line of laptops shipped with a PowerPC 750cx CPU clocked at 600 MHz.The base model included 256 MB of PC100 SO-DIMM RAM. 128 MB of this is onboard while the remainder is installed into a user-accessible slot. The memory can be upgraded to a total of 640 MB, which I have done. This model weighs in at just under 6 pounds.
EveryMac.com lists the battery life at 6 hours. Your actual experience will vary with usage (and the age of the battery.)
The 14.1 TFT XGA display is powered by an ATI Rage Mobility 128 (2x AGP) integrated adapter with 8 MB of SDRAM. The native and maximum supported resolution is 1024x768. It’s possible to mirror the display to a second monitor through the mini-vga port.
The base model shipped with a 20 GB ULTRA ATA hard disk, though mine has a 40 GB drive installed. I’m not sure if this was an available option at purchase or if it was a user-installed upgrade. Also included is an 8x Combo drive, capable of reading both CDs and DVDs, as well as writing CDs.
For communication, there is a 56k v90 modem as well as 10/100Base-T ethernet. I’ve installed the optional AirPort wireless adapter, though as yet I have not been able to get it to work with my modern networking hardware. The AirPort “sees” the local network but cannot connect to it. I can connect to my local home network through a wired connection just fine.
For connectivity, there are 2 USB 1.1 ports and a single FireWire 400 port.
There really isn’t any expansion available beyond the optional AirPort card. The wi-fi antenna is built into the case.
This laptop shipped dual booting, with OS 9 and OS X 10.1 installed. Versions up to 10.4.11 are supported.
I’m not a huge fan of the keyboard. I don’t know how to explain it other than it doesn’t “feel” good. It seems I’m always either hitting the wrong key or accidentally hitting the trackpad to send my mouse pointer flying across the screen. This could simply be due to the smaller (than I’m used to) size of the case. Time and use may mitigate this.
Speaking of the trackpad, while it’s perfectly serviceable, due to the aforementioned issue I prefer using a USB Apple Mighty Mouse, though OS 9 will treat this two button mouse as having only a single button. There doesn’t seem to be a way in OS 9 to completely disable the trackpad, though I was at least able to disable clicking to improve the situation a bit.
AppleWorks 6, which provides word processing, spreadsheet, database, and basic graphics editing capabilities, was bundled with the system. For surfing the web, Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape 4.7 are provided. I actually did take these out for a test drive on the modern internet and, no. For email you have Apple Mail, Outlook Express, or Netscape. As with the web browsers, I was unable to get these to connect to a modern server.
The iBook was Apple’s entry level line of laptops (power users were directed to the PowerBook models), so even by the standards of the early 2000s, these were not exactly high performance machines. These were best suited to basic computing tasks such as web surfing and general office tasks such as word processing and spreadsheets. In 2020, the web is pretty much out but you it's certainly still capable of light office duties, with the appropriate software for this OS and hardware, of course. Lightweight retro gaming is also possible. I’ve been playing the original Diablo and it runs just fine.
I picked up this laptop for about $60 on eBay largely as a relatively inexpensive way to natively run OS 9. It’s done that, and done it well enough to at least whet my appetite to explore Classic Mac OS more, and at the price I paid, I’m not complaining. Now, back to Diablo.

Chinese enthusiasts are serving global Thinkpad fans by making modern motherboards that fit in classic chassis from the Golden Age of the Thinkpad

After Lenovo bought out IBM's Thinkpad business, they began to tinker with the classic and famously immutable laptop designs: in small ways at first, and then in much larger ones. I buy a new Thinkpad every year (I promised myself a new laptop every year as a dividend from the savings when I stopped smoking) and the first decade's worth were practically perfect: they ran various GNU/Linux flavors without a hitch, the hard-drives were swappable in two minutes by removing a single screw, and the keyboard could be replaced without any tools in less than a minute.
But for about five years, Thinkpads have seen a steady noose-tightening when it comes to user modifiability and GNU/Linux-compatibility, thanks in part to the decision to miniaturize components, and in part to the increasing reliance on UEFI and other BIOS features that make GNU/Linux installation into a much more fraught prospect than it has been since the earliest days of free software.
The first thing to go was the beloved, clacky, positive-action keyboards, replaced by Macbook-style chiclet keyboards that wore out much faster, but at least the keyboards were easily swapped out when they started to falter. Then came new submicro designs that made swapping keyboards into a one-hour procedure that had to be performed by a professional who would have to virtually totally disassemble the computer.
The same forces made drive-swaps harder and harder. I used to order a Thinkpad with the smallest, cheapest drive available and then throw it away on arrival and replace it with a third-party, 1TB SSD. Now I just order the Thinkpads with 1TB SSDs and pay a premium for them (these custom options can add weeks to the build/delivery time, too) -- thankfully, the price-gap on Lenovo's 1TB SSDs and third party drives has narrowed.
GNU/Linux installation has gone from easy to hard to virtually impossible in some cases. In the past twelve months, I've tried to install recent (and LTS) versions of Ubuntu on an X1 Carbon 6th Generation and a T530, only to abandon the project and return the laptops (again, to their credit, Lenovo made these returns easy). I've got an X1 Extreme on order, which is certified for use with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I've got my fingers crossed.
And now, the Thinkpad X-series systems have eliminated their Ethernet ports and require users to carry (and not lose or break) a dongle to use wired internet.
But there may be another way!
51NB, a group of Chinese enthusiasts buy up classic, pre-Lenovo Thinkpad chassis and manufacturers new motherboards for them with modern CPUs and other hardware. They started with a run of Thinkpad "X62" system (X61s with a new motherboard) and then branched out into Thinkpad "X210"s -- an X201 with a Core i7 8550u (4 cores, turbo boost up to 4GHz); 2× DDR4 SODIMM slots; 2× mini PCI Express slots; an M.2 NVMe slot; a 3.5” SATA bay; a 12.6 inch, 2880×1920, 450 nits, wide gamut display; Mini DisplayPort & VGA out; 3× USB 3.1 ports; an SD reader and gigabit Ethernet (no dongle required!).
Geoff Greer bought both the X62 and the X210 and has rave reviews for both. There are some important drawbacks, though: you can't get Lenovo's best-in-the-world warranty service on your weird Chinese Frankenthinkpad. If it breaks down, you either send it to China or you keep a spare motherboard around and do the swap yourself (you can buy the X210 as a bare board or a complete system). Thankfully, "The laptop can be entirely disassembled with two Philips screwheads (#0 and #1). At no point do you encounter tape, glue, or pentalobe screws."
And buying the X210 isn't easy: you have to wire $1200 to a personal bank account in China and then email another address to have those funds forwarded to a QQ account (!).

Golf course pole clock is essential for running schedules in time
Golf courses need clocks and if you are one you will too need them? In the golf course the clocks are required for the very purpose of telling time only but in a different way. It is a kind of countdown clocks that tell you how much time is left in a particular tee off. Such situations will require the golf course pole clock which also means that a clock mounted on a pole and that it will stand tall and display time for all concerned to see in the green.

Golf courses will need clocks like the pace-of-play clocks, the sidewalk clocks, club house clocks and so on. all these clocks are essentially installed in a golf course to run schedule efficiently and get play completed in time.
Wi-Fi or PoE speakers for effective communication
School PA systems are different propositions but are installed for communication with students and classrooms. If you are a k-12 school you will need state-of-art PA speakers that can work without wire, meaning wi-fi speakers or PoE or power over Ethernet speakers.
These speakers deliver high quality audio sound when you talk to the classrooms or faculty and will also allow you to carry on a 2-way conversation while discussing study related matters. The PA systems for schools have gotten smarter as they can be zoned to make different set of announcements. You can also announce pre-recorded messages beside live-broadcast and that make the system versatile of use and convenient one.

Pedestal clock can enhance ambience
Like golf courses, schools too require clocks on different points of the premises to tell the time to the attendance. Pedestal clocks will look good within the campus and they can be of classic designs such as Rolex model or Edwardian clocks. By installing the pedestal variety you can also increase ambience of the school premises and make an impressive picture to the parents.
Pedestal mounted clocks for all outdoor occasions and you can buy self sustained clocks that can synchronize themselves for time. For state-of –art PA systems and pedestal clocks call number (800) 964-5749 or send detailed letter to [email protected].

Why is a man running an educational business advocating for ignorance?
(This was originally published on 30 Nov. 2015 in response to this: https://medium.com/the-mission/why-knowing-stuff-doesn-t-really-matter-f06a5536ab59) I don’t often read things on Medium that makes me think “Are you high?” but “Why Knowing Stuff Doesn’t Really Matter” made me literally think that Isaac Morehouse was tripping balls when he wrote it. Because I cannot, I simply can. not. imagine why someone who in theory, makes money from teaching people stuff, aka “knowing stuff” would publish this…paen to deliberate, methodical stupidity.
The idea that somehow, there is knowledge that is “good” and knowledge that is “bad” is almost ludicrous. Wait, no almost. It’s ludicrous. It’s the kind of thinking that in a cynical vein, is what your classic late-Victorian/early 20th Century factory or mine owner would use on their workers. “You only need to know how to run a milling machine.” “You’re a miner. All you need to know is how to swing your pick where I tell you to swing it.” It’s a phenomenally limiting philosophy, especially coming from someone ostensibly in the education business.
But then I read the Praxis site, and it starts to make sense. Isaac isn’t about education, Isaac is about training and when you want people to value training over education, knowledge for its own sake is indeed a bad thing. I still think he’s completely bonkers, but I understand how his self-interest is at play here. Which makes me even more sad. I’d have preferred his paen to ignorance was the result of too many tabs and not manipulative cynicism designed to bag on “useless” education. Which is what that post is.
However, here’s the thing: training shows you how, and what. Education is where you learn why, and why is in the end, way more important. It’s also more vague, and cannot be neatly compartmentalized into a series of 8-week courses and meetings with startup CEOs. “Why”, is learning “useless” stuff with no immediate value, that won’t help you code better or suck VC privates better.
It’s stuff like learning at 6 that all doors on the outside open out, and then finding out why. Or how to penny a door. Or drive a stick shift. It’s learning that you never need ice for soda from a dispenser to make it cold because the very design of the thing means it’s always cold. Something to do with the syrup in the hoses going to shit if it gets warm as I recall. What was the real-world value in that? Not a goddamned thing. But knowing why I didn’t need ice made me more interested in how soda fountains work, especially since I worked with the goddamned things. As it turns out, the more you know a thing, the fewer problems you have with it.
As it also turns out, knowing why, and the digging that “why” leads you to helps you see beyond the thin veneer of bullshit that people such as Morehouse portray as some kind of fucking wisdom.
Morehouse has a seriously fucked-up thesis in that post: that there is “good” or immediately useful knowledge, and “bad” or not immediately useful knowledge. That thesis is what I would call “shit” or shit.
When I joined the Air Force, I spent, post-basic training, (did you know that if you’re really stressed out, it’s perfectly normal to go weeks without taking a shit? Yeah. If it ever happens, don’t freak out about it. Try dropping your stress levels) at Keesler AFB. For 9.5 months or so, the USAF taught me a lot of electronics and RF. Tubes, transistors, ICs, tracing circuits, reading wiring diagrams, RF theory, how electronic countermeasures really work, (no video game or movie has ever gotten this right, by the way) most of which was of no immediate use on B-1B bombers, which would be the only weapons system I worked on.
(Did you know the value in being able to make awesome piña coladas from scratch? It got me free hotel rooms on weekends during tech school on a regular basis. So, about…oh $300 a month in 1987 money. Amazing what skill with a blender, some time spent working in a Mexican restaurant, and conversations with the hotel owners can get you.)
Being able to strip, test, and reassemble an ALT-32 had no value in the B-1B world, for the -32 was a B-52 system and an old one in 1987. Nor did I ever have to calculate RF loss, I had test sets that did it for me. But you know where that shit was useful? About two weeks after the introduction of the original iBook. Man, as it turns out, having a solid grounding in high frequency RF that I didn’t use between 1993 and 1999 made it really easy to correctly implement a WiFi network.
Not only that, I knew why the base stations had to be placed in certain areas. I also knew what spread-spectrum really was, and the effect it had on signal, along with why antenna polarization matters, frequency is important, and all the rest.
None of that detail was needed for B-1B DAS (Defensive Avionics Systems, what ECM on a B-1B is called.) The plane and the test sets took care of that shit for us. But because I knew the why, the how and the what got easier, including hows and whats I had no goddamned clue about in 1987–88 when I was really learning this shit.
Had I followed Isaac’s advice, I would have actively worked to forget all of it upon leaving the Air Force, since I was an IT tech in a small city government and had no need for any of that knowledge.
For that matter, why was it important I know about things outside of my AFSC, like why a B-1B needs SMCS Vanes, (the “winglets” on the front of the fuselage) or how the FCGMS (Fuel Center-Of-Gravity Management System) works. Or how “Cooling Oil” became “Coolanol”.
Because knowlege. All knowledge. Is good. The current idiocy that partitions knowledge into “good” and “bad” or “immediately useful” vs. “not immediately useful” is just that: idiocy. Did I know as a kid that playing football and baseball would help me have an intuitive understanding of certain aspects of physics? No.
Did I think that years spent standing under a plane with my hands over my head dealing with the unholy rat’s nest that is coax cable connections in a B-1B wing glove would be holy shit awesome training for connecting networking or even HDMI cable when you had to do it blind with almost no room for your hand to work in? Nope. Didn’t even know what ethernet was, and HDMI didn’t exist.
Did I realize how continuously useful a random elective in high school in architectural drafting would be throughout my life? Don’t be stupid, I just liked drawing houses. But ye gods, being able to read basic blueprints and the like? How is that not useful? The months poor TSgt. Frasier spent pounding how to read circuit diagrams into my head has paid off over and over, even though I didn’t do it that much even in the Air Force.
Immersing myself in how things work on a large, complicated aircraft taught me all kinds of things. Like why aircraft toilets are so expensive. And that large systems, like networks, are closer to biological systems than vaguely interconnected nodes. Of course, the biology classes I took helped with that even more. How often in my professional life has biology been directly applicable?
Never.
How often have the concepts behind that biology helped me grok really complicated networks or computer I/O? Countless times.
Knowledge, in a very real way, is life. You are, literally, what you know. The things you learn all work together. The very idea that you don’t want to “waste time with things you don’t need to know” is…well, it’s fucking stupid is what it is. Why would you actively work to limit yourself?
I cannot imagine what it’s like to go through life being deliberately ignorant of “useless” things. Because I’ve never really, outside of generic griping, found knowledge that ended up being truly useless. Maybe…maybe five minutes before I die, I could tell you if there is such a thing. But until then, fuckit, I’m going to learn ALL THE THINGS.
You should too.
