I've kinda been studying evolution (like the long term stuff) and I have this question that I'm not sure how I would look up so maybe you can help. So basically every pokemon species can breed in their first "evolution" like their first shape stage, given enough time after hatching of course. And this makes sense with like humans, we only have one stage and we can "breed" after however many years.

But what has me confused are the "baby" pokemon, the ones where their first stage can't breed. Things like pichu, azurill, happiny. Now most of these will "evolve" at similar times to when other pokemon would mature, so that sort of makes sense. But I'm not sure that's the full story, because riolu only evolve based on environment and they can't breed in that stage, only as lucario. I haven't seen one IRL but I looked online and saw some people with really old pichu, etc. like 20+ years, who I'm assuming still couldn't breed.

I guess my question is why did this sort of system come about? It probably evolved multiple times given how different the pokemon who have the system are, but why? It seems like having breeding put behind a stage which can be indefinitely postponed would be bad for fitness.

Baby pokemon came about because of under-developed pokemon in the eggs. There is still debate on why it keeps happening, as biology shows that they should've died out, but scientists believe that, bcuz they are weaker, it heightens their chances of survival because their parents will take more time caring for them.

Another theory is that baby pokemon also evolve by friendship, meaning they have to form close bonds with other pokemon to evolve. This makes them have stronger pack-bonds, and more likely to survive due to safety and numbers. It's why so many baby pokemon are very social or in lines with social pokemon.

Please take what I say with a grain of salt. There is still many theories on why baby pokemon exist.
