So remember this post?
YEP HERE IT IS THE COMPILATION OF WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE
I am no professional, this is honestly a “for myself” thing so I can have a list to go back to when I feel like I have forgotten.
to do _____ an earthquake:
BEFORE:
Familiarize yourself with the exits
Avoid having hazards like heavy objects on shelves
Have a Go Bag with all essentials needed for possible evacuation: first aid kit, whistle and flashlight, battery-operated radio and battery, canned goods and biscuits, water bottle, etc
Learn about the evacuation plan and area
DURING:
Do not panic
Duck, Cover, and Hold
Stay away from structures that can break and fall over like bridges, buildings, electric posts, trees, and slopes
Do not use electrical appliances (eg. elevator) and creating flames in case of a gas leak
Move to higher grounds if you are near shore
AFTER:
Evacuate (brisk walk, not run)
Be alert for aftershocks
Check for injuries
Stay updated on the radio
some cool infographics:

I just wanna take a moment to talk about this horrible dream I had.
The Earth is stretching.
IT SOUNDS WEIRD BUT HEAR ME OUT
We are taught that underneath us, there are convection currents within the mantle where hot rocks rise and cold rocks sink causing some sort of circular motion like wheels on a vehicle. Hence, the rocks on the crust just above the mantle move. Rocks move and stretch since they’ll either push against each other, move away, or slide past each other.
So like when you stretch an elastic band to its limit, breaks in the crust called faults appear due to the movement of the tectonic plates. And we’re especially familiar with the earthquakes that result from them.
I personally haven’t experienced damaging earthquakes, but this dream (or nightmare?) was an eye opener for me. I dreamt that the Earth was stretching so much that you can see the ground splitting in two. But that wasn’t even the scary part.
The scary part was that I didn’t know what to do.
My mind went blank, despite the tremendous amount of repeated discussions and drills about this kind of situation in school. I completely forgot I was dreaming. It is truly scary to be caught unawares when the big one strikes. It’s true that knowledge is power, because knowing what to do during a disaster is advantageous to your survival.
I ended up so concerned about standing frozen during a disaster that the moment I woke up, I searched the things you should do before, during, and after an earthquake hits.
I’ll probably make a post compiling this information for anyone who wants to take a look but for this post (EDIT: You can find it here!), I wanna list the things you can look out for or the effects of an earthquake.
The most obvious impact is the shaking, or the ground moving in different directions (either up, down, or sideways). This shaking causes other damages such as ground rupture, liquefaction, landslide, and tsunami. One of the reasons why we need to remain alert even after an earthquake is because of aftershocks, or smaller tremors that occur after the main shock like mini earthquakes.

[Photo ID: A portrait picture of ground rupture in Surigao del Norte, courtesy of PHIVOLCS-DOST. End ID.]
The ground rupture shown above is a result of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines back in February 2017. As we can see, the ground is deformed and cracked from the movement caused by the earthquake. Hence, there is fissure and deformation.

Liquefaction is a case where sediments like soil deposits and sand flow and turn into liquid and have properties similar to quicksand. Because of this, structures like buildings or vehicles (such as featured in the picture above) sink in the ground.
Tumblr media
[Photo ID: Liquefaction Potential Map of Metro Manila, with a legend of yellow for low, magenta for moderate, and red for high. The edge areas surrounded by Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay are mostly marked red. End ID.]
In the map, it can be observed that there is a high liquefaction potential in the boundaries of Metro Manila, and this is natural because liquefaction is common in areas near bodies of water.
Tumblr media
[Photo ID: A landslide in a road of Benguet, Abra that authorities attempt to clear. End ID.]
Another effect triggered by earthquakes is the downward movement of debris like rocks and soil, or landslides due to the strong shaking. An example of which is a magnitude-7.0 earthquake-induced landslide that had occurred in the province of Abra in July 2022.
Tumblr media
[Photo ID: A map of tsunami prone areas in the Philippines with trenches mostly tracing the boundary. End ID.]
An earthquake may also occur underwater, originating from trenches. This causes a series of waves to pile up and become one large wave called a tsunami.
Many of these effects lead to property destruction, even loss of lives. Out of the earthquakes that occurred in the Philippines, many have experienced being injured, homeless, and sick with health complications, physically or mentally. The Philippines may be susceptible to natural disasters, but it does not mean people have to be vulnerable. With enough preparation and knowledge, the harm can be lessened. It is extremely essential to know disaster risk and reduction management.

What's funny is that this song is what woke me up this morning. "Babangon tayo." Because when life knocks us down, be it through typhoons or earthquakes, we get back up. A lot of these are drawn from the PHIVOLCS-DOST website, so feel free to leave your own insight! Thanks for reading!
