I definitely know some people were writing marauders fics after PoA and were devastated when Sirius died in OotP (esp Wolfstar fans!) so defo people were shipping Jily at that time. We also didn’t know much about a lot of info so that’s where the Charlus and Dorea as names for James’s parents came from (before we found out they were Fleamont and Euphemia!) 😂😂😂

But yeah as far as I can tell, very early fics (OotP etc) had really angry, unpopular and nerdy and very uptight, very shouty Lily who detested James with every fibre of her being (except she found him really attractive in spite of herself ewww) and an incredibly smooth, sophisticated, hot and slutty James who was shagging girls like there’s no tomorrow and didn’t actually gaf about any of them, but for reasons best kept to himself was obsessed with a girl who seemed really unlikeable and hated him - but he decided that he was going to pester her repeatedly for years until she said yes.

She always eventually said yes.

So - Really healthy relationship, am I right? 😂

(Never mind that in canon the small bit we see of James he’s Literally Shit At Flirting and very unsuccessful at it. And that Lily is described as pretty and popular and cheeky… 😳🙄🤣)

I’m one of those who grew up watching the films as my intro the the HP universe then got into the series later and discovered my love for Jily there. I couldn’t believe how the movies basically cut out and changed their dynamic, making it look like their first meeting was a peaceful one and that Lily was giving James heart eyes after him bumping into Snape and knocking off his books right in front of her, I was shook when canon was so opposite lol but I’m curious to know how it was for people who read the series in real time, what was that shift like before and after the release of OOTP??

Was the fanon interpretation of their relationship before SWM completely different or were people still writing Enemies to Lovers since it was a popular trope? Or was the ship not as active bc there was t much to go off of based on other character accounts? Once OOTP releases was there a shift in excitement/popularity for the ship? Were there marauder era fics unfinished now that there was more canon to go off of for their personalities ?

Ahaha omg the SWM movie scene was a TRAVESTY!!! Genuinely one of the top letdowns of the whole franchise. (Alongside the erasure of book!Ginny but that is a separate tangent.) I'm so so happy you went back and read the books!! Movie-only fandom genuinely pains me, I can't lie 😅

My recollection is that OotP is what really launched all of Marauders fandom. I mean maybe some was fic around after POA? But at least for me, I didn't get into it (or Jily) until after OotP, and it felt like a massive boom at the time. Regarding Jily specifically, I don't know if there was any fanon prior to OotP — my recollection is that OotP really set the tone, and then there was all sorts of fanon between OotP and DH, which gave us new information about Lily via the flashbacks that informed the dynamic of her relationships with James and Severus, and just helped flesh out more of her personality.

As for what fanon was and big fics back then, I honestly don't remember. I was pretty young and not involved in fandom so much as just going through waves of reading HP fanfic on FFN and other sites that no longer exist 😂 I do remember being into time travel AUs, like where the Golden Trio and teenage Marauders somehow end up teaming up for shenanigans, so that was definitely A Thing. And I did dabble in writing my own fic! I had some Golden Trio stuff, Marauders stuff, and Draco stuff back in the day (The Tom Felton crush was real lmao). None of it was ever posted anywhere, but I still have the binders I made 🥲

i’m afraid not. the only way i could see myself finishing anything on my ffnet would be if i rewrote it completely, and i have zero inclination to do that. mostly because i just don’t think any of it’s very good, from my perspective as the writer; it’s been eight years since i’ve so much as tried to work on any of it and i’ve vastly improved in that time. and rewriting fics i’m not interested in anymore, you know, that’s obviously not how i want to spend my time when i have other fics to finish that i actually like, and i’m trying to focus on my book, too.

regardless of what fandom i’m writing for, these days i tend to go for modern aus (with the very occasional exception in which i’ll write some canon storyline, but then i get it out of my system and go back to happier things). so if i were to write jily again, it would certainly be a muggle au (and posted to my ao3). contemporary romance is really the only genre that interests me at this point — so even if i felt that my old stuff held up in terms of quality, the setting just feels stuffy and restrictive to me now.

i keep those fics posted because i know people like to reread them, but i personally haven’t even skimmed them in years. there’s so much i dislike about what i did with certain characterizations and relationships and just on a technical level, it’s all... bah. not something i care to revisit.

sorry to disappoint, but i’d prefer to keep things honest!

Tedromeda fanfics

As time goes by I start to think this is the relationship I am more curious about in the whole HP universe. Ted Tonks is the Hufflepuff whose love and patience won Andromeda’s heart. Andromeda is the Black that got away and, despite the hardships, had a full and happy life. Teddy is her shining star, her beacon, in the end. 

Tedromeda is one of the best love stories in canon. And yes, for fancast I really like Keira Knightley and James McAvoy for Andy x Ted. 

Below I leave a (long) list of Tedromeda fanfics, some I’ve read, others are still pending. Leave your suggestions!

the lost generation (Chapters 5, 12 and 17) by Jennbob | Multichapters - Ongoing | Wolfstar and Jily | I sincerily worship the way Andromeda is portrayed in these chapters, her relation with Cissy, Sirius and Ted Tonks is, in my opinion, brilliantly explored. In fact, this fanfic does an amazing job in portraying the Black family, Regulus and Alphard Black are two other characters I am particularly fond of in this fanfiction. 

Summer of 72’ by @padfoot-prongs-and-polaroids | Multichapters (9 so far) | Ongoing | Tedromeda | This is the story of the summer Andromeda Black and Ted Tonks fell in love. The thing I like the most in this love story is how support characters are developed and their stories intertwined with the two main characters - Andy and Ted. It’s a comforting love story, I am enjoying a lot reading it.

all is quiet in the clearing by slyther_ing | Oneshot | Tedromeda | His one regret, at the end of it all, is that he cannot turn back time and bring them both to the nights when Dora had settled into the deep slumber of a baby and they had watched her ever changing hair. This is a sad-slash-angsty oneshot, but very beautiful and profound about the last moments of Ted Tonks.

Me Reviewing Lily and James Fanfiction Part 12:

Fanfiction: All Right, Evans?

This fanfiction picks up in sixth year and only covers their sixth year and unlike canon and other James and Lily fanfictions, they actually start their romantic relationship in sixth year whereas in canon and in other stories, we know that James and Lily actually get together in their seventh year.

As for my overall thoughts on this fanfiction, I thought that James and Lily got together too fast, like there wasn’t enough build-up or romantic tension before they got together. I felt like 15% of this fic was them warming up to each other and the other 75% was just James and Lily creating more problems for themselves in trying to navigate a secret relationship. Yes, these two have a secret relationship that they try to keep secret from their friends. ( They’re idiots but I guess that’s why we love reading about them.) I wanted more tension before they became a couple. I want to be on the edge of my seat reading that teenage romance angst where Lily is just slowly starting to realize she actually has positive feelings for James, so I felt that this fic just didn’t give that to me.

Also, Sirius wasn’t written as a quidditch player in this story which really ticked me off because he is literally the definition of a jock goth. Like how do so many people just forget that he was on the quidditch team?

Some of the things that I did like were Sirius taking a muggle studies class and being fascinated with the muggle postal service system. James and Lily went out on a not-date when Lily was still in denial for her feelings for James.

There is minor character death in this to really showcase the upcoming wizarding war, There was also a lot of smut, but good smut though. My previously mentioned comments still stands, but I still had fun reading this.

Rate: 6.8/10

Most Memorable scene: Lily absolutely goes apeshit on the slytherins who tried to gang up on her in the corridors. She sends them all to the hospital wing and later Dumbledore sort of calls her a hero.

Most memorable quote: “But its your fault she decides she likes me because she sees the house and figures out we’re rich.”

Do/did you read CokeBottleK’s fanfic as well? I know she doesn’t do Jily anymore but I always really loved her writing! So I’d like to try the stuff she’s doing now but it’s for fandoms I’m not in, so I’m just reaching out to see if it’s worth a shot even if you’re not invested in the source material? Your fics and recs have never let me down before, so I thought I’d ask!

I’ve read some of her Game of Thrones fics on AO3 but not the Walking Dead ones. I would say to give her newer stuff a read. She is a far better writer than most published authors, her stuff is witty and sharp and snappy, and her romance writing is all of that and the exact kind of warm and gooey mush that warms the heart. She’s exceptionally talented.

it’s a pretty safe bet to say that if it’s on FFnet, i won’t be returning to it. i’d had a few plans for my series, but a lot of time has passed, and a lot of growth has happened for me, and those fics just don’t hold any appeal to me anymore. i’ve become a much better writer in so many ways, and i have loads of other things i want to work on these days. i need to focus that time and energy on what i want.

as for anything new, i don’t have any inmediate plans; but, sure, i could see myself whipping up a couple oneshots if the mood strikes. if that’s the case, they’ll be up on my ao3, and i’ll be sure to link them here.

I’m sorry, anon, but she took them down herself and I completely respect her decision and her reasons for making it, so I’m not going to ask her to put them on her AO3. She is on Tumblr but I know she’s changed her URL lately, she’s had some nasty anons from people in the Jily fandom who have been very unkind to her because she is no longer part of it, so idk how comfortable I’d feel tagging her in this either.
