Camp Trips, Airports, and Realistic Workplaces (#WorkHuman)
Monday was a helluva commute to get to WorkHuman. Both of my kids had school events, so I needed to get them ready.
Getting ready to send my kids off to their respective camping trips. Then it's on to #WorkHuman !

Unfortunately, they go to separate schools. To complicate things, their trip times were close enough to make the commute uncomfortable. Really uncomfortable.
Playing beat-the-clock in NYC traffic. It's times like this that I appreciate the aggressive street poetry of a good cab driver.

Fortunately, the cab drivers I utilized came through. They were fast, assertive, and knew the most effective route to take. As a result, I was able to get them both to their schools on time. Success!
We made it! Disaster has been averted, at least for my kids. Kudos to my ninja cab driver for helping me not ruin my 'AAA' Dad rating.

Afterwards, it was on to my flight. But instead of using another cab, I chose to take the subway, then a regular MTA bus to the airport. Unlike the thrill ride I endured in the cabs, the commute to the airport was uneventful and, dare I say it? Relaxing. In both the subway and bus, the workers (especially the bus driver) were on schedule, informative, and accommodating to the demands of large groups of people. In both cases, I utilized professionals that were out to achieve the same goal--get me and others from Point A to Point B. The way in which they did it were quite different. As I engage with the WorkHuman conference this week, it's worth thinking about how our organizations are set up. Are they like cabs, independent operators that are looking to maximize each transaction? Or perhaps they're more like a public transportation system, designed to accommodate large scale movement from a diverse set of actors? Or somewhere in between, depending on the department/organization/industry? This is not to say that one is superior to the other. The two cabs I took performed as I needed them to. The same was true for the train and bus ride to the airport. What's important to realize was that I was clear from the beginning as to which mode of travel made sense over the other. I didn't apply the expectatons I had for one to the other. And it appeared that each was well suited for their roles. I think it's safe to say that business leaders want their employees to enjoy their work, and to do it well. It helps when leaders are clear, as well as honest, as to what type of business they are. This way they can look to hire, engage, and retain staff that can thrive in that environment. In other words, don't hire a cab driver when what you really need is a damn good bus driver!
