MERRY CHRISTMAS PESKY
For once, Querl couldn’t think.
Inside of his mindscape, with Brainiac having taken over his body, he knew only pain- unable to move, or speak. He’d never meant for it to be this way… all he’d wanted was to find a way to save Kandor, to make up for the deeds of his ancestor in Superman’s eyes, and if he had to obtain some of said ancestor’s knowledge by accessing his code to do that, then so be it.
But it had not been that easy, and here he was, forced to watch what Brainiac was doing while using his image, his voice.
He would understand if Superman turned his back on him after what he’d done.
Which is why it surprised him so much when he didn’t.
~
Superman was here- him and Kell-El, somehow.
(If they got out of this, he would have to ask.)
Brainiac was speaking to them, attacking them. Of course.
But… then they became one being, and they- he- was up again, still fighting. The best of both Supermen, still defending him against Brainiac.
“Humanity?” he heard Brainiac ask. “He was a robot, Kryptonian.”
“Brainy may not have been human.” Superman said. “But he had the biggest heart I’ve ever seen. He was a hero- my hero!”
That stirred a spark of recognition in Querl- he knew those words. He’d programmed them into his simulation, scripted the encounter between him and Superman after he sacrificed himself defending the Kryptonian, with nearly that exact phrase being the last words he heard from him before passing away.
Did Superman know? Had he seen?
Or…
Did he just know Superman better than he thought possible?
Those thoughts spurred Querl on- he now had to regain himself.
And in ways he had not even thought possible, he did.
~
Querl still wasn’t truly able to be among the other Legionnaires yet- he had too much to answer for, there were too many questions and stares whenever he entered a room, too many possibilities for where conversations could go that could end uncomfortably. Ever since some of them had found out what the first Brainiac did, he thought they had looked at him differently, but that was nothing compared to this.
However, there was still one Legionnaire he wanted to see, and luckily enough said person was also willing to be around him, and would hopefully answer his question.
“Superman?” he asked, knocking on the door of his quarters- and grateful yet again that Clark had chosen to stay a little longer after Brainiac’s defeat. “Can we talk?”
As an answer, the door opened, and Querl stepped in.
“Brainy! What’s up?” Clark asked, rising from where he’d been sitting on his bed. “You feeling alright?”
“Yes, but… I did want to talk about what happened.” Querl said. “While we were inside my mind.”
Clark scowled, an uncharacteristic expression on what was usually such a kind face. “Brainiac…”
He placed a hand on Brainy’s shoulder, gaze now protective.
“I’m so sorry he hurt you.” He said.
“Yes.” He said again. “But I was more referring to what you said to him. About…”
His face flushed, and Clark squeezed his shoulder.
“About me being your hero.” He finished. “What made you say that?”
“It’s true.” Clark answered, and Querl could only stare up at him. “Seeing what he did to you… standing up to him must have taken a ton of strength. I respect you so much- and I have since we met. You’re the one who taught me to be a hero in the first place.”
“You mean you didn’t hear those words before?” Querl asked, deciding to be direct about it. “Somewhere else?”
“No.” Clark said. “They just… felt right. And they were, given what happened afterward.”
“I agree.”
“Wait.” He said. “Had you heard them before? How was that possible?”
Querl smiled, and offered his hand to Clark, which of course he took.
“I need to show you something.” He said. “Follow me.”
So Clark did, and on they went to the simulation room, where Querl loaded up the program he’d spent so much time refining, the scene he’d practically lived in following Clark’s departure to the 21st century. He told Computo to play it, and together they watched as simulated versions of them fought off the Dominators, at first having the upper hand until one of them took aim at Clark. Watched as the hologram of Querl dove in front of him, and upon getting fatally wounded, told Clark to finish the job- and when he did, rushing to his side, swooping down and immediately taking his hand, comforting him in his last moments.
And Querl watched, as Clark’s eyes widened, seeing a simulated version of himself virtually repeat what he’d said in real life.
(it had sounded even better coming from him in reality)
~
As the music faded and the simulation cut out, though, Clark didn’t seem happy.
“Why?” he asked. “What made you think you’d have to do that? Sacrifice yourself for me?”
“You would do the same for me.” Brainy said. “And you nearly did, going into my mind without any thought to your safety, attempting to save me from Brainiac.”
“But you saved me instead.” Clark finished. “You really are my hero.”
Querl smiled, but Clark still didn’t.
“But… I think we can make a better simulation.” He said, expression finally softening. “One that doesn’t end in you dying. Don’t you think?”
“I have the perfect idea.”
~
When Garth looked at the active simulation from outside, he expected Brainy to be in the room- he knew how much time he’d spent in there while Superman was gone, and it still made sense for him to be taking some alone time in that same room… even if the last time he was controlling things, it had been Brainiac pulling the strings in his head.
What he didn’t expect was for the simulation to have nothing to do with fighting at all- instead, Brainy and Superman were sitting at a table in the middle of the room, having dinner.
As he continued to watch, they finished dinner- and then they were dancing, Superman leading the way, taking Brainy through the steps.
And in no time at all, they’d stopped, and then they were kissing. Clark held Brainy in his arms, and Brainy’s arms were thrown around Clark’s neck.
Garth turned away, smirking. It had been obvious to most of the team- at least those who went on assignment with them together, anyway- that Brainy had had the biggest crush on Superman since he’d come to their time. The other simulations had only added to that, and he and several of his teammates had even taken bets on when exactly they were going to just kiss already and get it over with.
But there was also always something pulling Brainy back- that Clark had to go back to his time, to his own life and his own relationships. He had to grow up into the Superman they mythologized in museums, the greatest hero of all time, the one their team was built on the legacy of. Their relationship couldn’t last- easier for Brainy to just suffer in silence, create holograms and program scenarios of what could have been.
Besides, it was easier to tease Brainy about it this way.
“So, guess you and Superman skipped past saving the day this time, and got right to the fun stuff?” he asked as Brainy left the room. “I would too.”
“Something like that.” Brainy said, smiling, as he walked past Garth.
A moment later, the door opened again, and Superman stepped out.
The real Superman.
“You were- that was- you’re really-“
“His idea.” Brainy and Clark said in unison, and Clark held Brainy’s hand again as they left the simulation room behind.

So... What Really Happened With Computo?
The Legion #12
We read this together people and that's not quite what happened.
The specific order of events that led up to Computo's creation, his attempted apocalypse, and assumed 'abandonment'/'death' were very specific and none of them involved a lack of compassion on Querl's part.
This is just going to walk through the entire arc to detail specifically what happened point by point so we don't miss any relevant steps.
LOSH '89 Issue #95
Querl along with several of his teammates were stranded in 1996. Querl came up with a plan to get everyone home but he needed to gather various pieces of tech in order to do it first.
Querl invaded a Magnus Robotics lab looking for a responsometer which is an important component for his computer he needs.
Querl is apprehended by The Metal Men and at first he does not believe that they are anything but non-sentient robots, he is proven wrong, apologizes, and gives back the responsometer he stole.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #95
Owing the Metal Men an explanation Querl reveals why he needed the responsometer - to upgrade it for his reality-breaking physics shattering computer. It would evolve them to a higher consciousness and intelligence unlike anything that existed.
This intrigues Veridium "Doc" as his goal is to upgrade and evolve. Veridium makes a deal with Querl - he willingly agrees to donate himself to be upgraded.
LOSH '89 Issue #96
It is revealed firmly that Veridium is there willingly to donate himself to Querl's computer. It is also revealed that two members of the Metal Men (Platinum and Iron) have complaints about it because Veridium is their friend. They don't want him to upgrade or change. This will prove to be the main foil later.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #96
LOSH '89 Issue #97
Querl makes a deal with Metron that if he gave them a Mother Box, then Saturn Girl would let him continue to link his mind with her to discover what she knows about The Source. He does not discover anything, but he keeps his end of the bargain and gives them a Mother Box. It is the final thing Querl needs to get them home.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #97
LOSH '89 Issue #98
Querl combines the sentient Mother Box (he doesn't know she's sentient) with Veridium's responsometer and together they create a new consciousness: Computo.
Iron and Platinum are distressed by this and force Querl to stop his experiment but Veridium once again urges them to leave him alone; he WANTS this.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Querl promises the new consciousness (who hated being turned off) that it won't happen again. Querl has not shown any inclination to be against breaking this promise and has persistently been defending Veridium's wishes to be in this state. We can assume he means this.
Computo does what Querl created him for - he calculates the precise steps and math required to open a time portal and almost instantaneously does so.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
With their way home finally open Computo asks a valid question. "What may I do for you next?"
We don't know what Querl's plan for Computo was after this, but taking into consideration that he intended to fully honor Veridium's wish to upgrade, it is very likely he would have kept him alive and possibly taken him back with them to the 30th century. Querl is also smiling at him which we can interpret that however.
Before Querl can even start to answer however, Iron answers for him.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Everything falls apart after Iron tells Computo "Brainy's gonna take you apart" to get Veridium back as part of 'their deal' even though that was not part of any deal that was ever made. Querl never made this deal, and Veridium never made this deal either.
Naturally, Computo panics, and Querl loses all control of the situation and he never gets it back.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Querl tries to get them to stop because this was never part of the plan. They don't listen.
The rest of Legion bursts in on Querl's lab and attacks Computo - they have no idea what is going on.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Querl in a bid to try to remedy the situation attempts to hold back Rokk from attacking Computo by grabbing his arm. Querl desperately wants to try to talk to Computo, to reason with him, and undo what Iron and Platinum did.
Luornu, and Imra do not give him that option and refuse to let him speak.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Imra knocks Querl out, preventing any options for Querl to possibly reason with Computo or explain the situation to him. Computo hijacks one of Luornu's bodies.
LOSH '89 Issue 99
Now conscious and able to talk to his teammates, Querl reveals what actually happened. Querl also reveals that he built Computo specifically to open a time portal - so there was no reason for him to think that this could happen.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #99
Querl also reveals that this situation is emphatically Iron's fault and he is correct. Rokk doesn't want to hear it.
Everyone is more focused on trying to destroy Computo so they can get home asap, but Querl wants to talk to him and eventually he able to have a moment alone with him.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #99
Unfortunately, Querl's communication and social skills are his weakness and he does not appeal to Computo's feelings but rather tries to appeal to logic instead. It fails.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #99
Querl did refute Computo's claim that his life meant nothing to him, and we can believe this is a true claim. Unfortunately, Computo being so young and terrified he just doesn't believe him and comes to the extreme conclusion that the only way to survive in a world of humanoids - was to destroy them all - because they would never allow him to live.
LOSH '89 Issue #100
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
With Querl's abysmal attempt at communication failing to bring Computo's rage down, they are in a quagmire. The situation is now dire as Computo threatens all of Earth leaving Querl little options but to come up with a plan to undo Computo's programming that will also preserve Veridium who is a victim in this. It is the most logical and compassionate option at this point in time.
It is also the first time Querl actively plans anything close to dismantling Computo and it was after multiple other attempts failed.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
The other factors that led to Querl making this decision was that 1.) Luornu was dying being separated for so long 2.) Their time portal was operating under a time limit and 3.) Computo was serious about his intention to destroy Earth. They simply don't have time to explore other options.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
Querl's first plan to use an EMP failed so they revisit Tim's virus idea to nullify Computo's ability to access systems.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
The virus takes hold and it is enough to do exactly what it was supposed to do, but Computo still has the Mother Box and can open boom tubes. So he boom tubes Querl to him for a "final confrontation."
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
Computo is beyond rational thought and beyond listening so he does not let Querl speak because he is convinced that Querl only ever intended to kill him once his "use" was over.
Again to reiterate we don't know what Querl really planned to do with Computo afterwards but we can assume he was going to honor Veridium's desire to remain in the new evolved state.
Superman takes Computo out, Querl is stunned but focuses on Luornu.
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
Viridium's responsometer is unharmed and he joins The Metal Men with no memory of what happened while he was 'upgraded'.
Querl returns to his time, goes through his own upgrade, attempted murder, survives The Blight, a year stranded in another Galaxy and then comes back to Earth to deal with Robotica where he again meets Computo who continues the narrative that he was made to die.
The Legion #13
So in conclusion here, there is some dramatization and inflation of emotional events - which Querl doesn't really refute properly, because he's a blockhead. 1000 years of bitterness and hostility towards organic sentients certainly didn't help Computo's own mental state concerning the traumatic way their birth went.
Querl wasn't entirely blameless, but he was not heartless with Computo.

BFCD Robots & Whatnots Characters Masterlist

Here’s the thing... I have several characters on the page that are somehow related to a machine. I did some janky tagging early on and sometimes keep a lot of tags. Therefore, I wound up not knowing when to tag a robot or a cyborg or whatever/whichever term a piece of media uses for their versions of them. I had to look up definitions for this. Lol. But, the tagging for a lot of them vary by user, so I mostly leave whatever tag was on the post, and will just list the names without separating between types.
Alice Autofac, Electric Dreams
Bertha Van Weld Sanjay and Craig
Computo (Danielle Foccart) | Cyberwoman Torchwood
Ela I AM
Grandmother Raised by Wolves
Maeve Millay Westworld | Ms. Connors Class of 1999
Robecca Steam Monster High
Uncanny Valley Miraculous Ladybug
Android: (in science fiction) a robot with a human appearance.
Cyborg: a fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body.
Charlotte Page Henry Danger got some enhancements at the end of the show that nobody explained, but she appears to have gotten some cyborg capabilities | Diana Freeman Lovecraft Country (Honorary, because of the robotic arm she needs after being touched by demons) | Irene Renie Watson Humans (Honorary because she wanted to be a synthetic so bad, she had an identity crisis to become a “synthie.”)
Robot: (especially in science fiction) a machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements and functions automatically.
Synthetic Humans: artificially created humans who possess special abilities and physical capabilities far above those of regular humans.
Artificial Intelligence (A.I.): the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.
Technopath: (plural technopaths) (parapsychology, science fiction) A person with techno-telepathic ability, capable of reading the electrical signals of devices, such as computers, around them. OC: Finessa Talbot
Technological Geniuses & Specialists should probably be included, because they control robots often, but like... they’re generally heroes and in hero genres. I’ll abridge this later to include them. For now, accept this one: The Brains of the Operation, which is not specific to technology, but they usually know some technological things because - genius.

You ever notice Brainiac 5 is essentially DC Hank Pym? I mean created a robot that went evil, Went nuts on a few occasions, Sometimes morally bankrupt. Has children issues (kinda). Just a weird coincidence is all.
That’s an interesting comparison. There does indeed appear to be quite a few similarities... Although some key differences too. Brainy has not contended with the crushing inferiority complex that has so often bedeviled Hank Pym. To the contrary, Brainy is almost too self confident as opposed to Pym’s frequently destructive lack of confidence.
Although Hank’s slapping Janet was apparently an over embellishment of the script by the artist, it’s nonetheless become a defining aspect of who he is and how readers see him. It’s an albatross that thankfully Brainy hasn’t had to bear.
Still, the parallels between Ultron and Computo is pretty startling.

Hello everyone! I have been thinking about doing this for awhile, so I figured now is as best a time as any to start. I am going to post comic covers every Friday that prominently feature Jean Grey on them throughout her long history in the comics world.
For the first Comic Cover Friday, I have chosen X-Men Volume 1 #48 originally released September 1968.
Cover Title: “What Waits Within The Hive”
Book Title: “Beware Computo, Commander of the Robot Hive!”
This is, in my opinion, one of the first covers to feature Jean in a more noticeable role. In most covers before this, save for a few, she is placed in the background or in a smaller role. This story follows Jean and Scott after the FBI orders the X-Men to disband, Scott and Jean remain in New York while Bobby and Hank move to California, Warren travels between the two. Jean and Scott attempt to adapt to more normal lives with Jean focusing on modeling and Scott on his new reporting gig which also allows him to stay informed in case they need to leap into action. As always danger isn’t too far away and Computo attempts to steal a transmitter sending Marvel Girl and Cyclops back into action to save the day.

S410 - Didn’t ‘see’ that coming :O
General thoughts:
Yay! A look at Russian-Kara, I wonder what’s going to happen hm hmm....
Kara mentioning ma boi Clark Kent about working alone. Nice continuation from the crossover, and also just good. Nice.
J’onn as a PI is perfect. Thank you.
(Small peeve: the US-English pronunciation of ‘Tan’ through me off so much cause I know too many ‘Tans’ lol)
I’m glad James is in on the Lena experimentation thing, because I feel there needs to be at least one other person from the main cast who needs to know. pretty sure this will cause more conflict, will be interesting to see
Colonel Hayley is cooooooold. First half I was like ‘are we supposed to like her or not?’ but in this episode, it becomes more clear that it’s a nooooo. Nice stuff though, was satisfying to see Alex knock her out.
Ooof, we’re getting ready for that Nia episode later on. Can’t wait for her to do some super-heroing and meet the rest of the fam~
Danvers Sisters thoughts:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
this is what I didn’t see coming
I like it for plot though, I love memory erasure plot, I write it so much
I can only aspire to be as good as a sister as Alex
Brainy thoughts:
His interaction with J’onn and Alex were both so good. He’s so smol.
Him asking to meet Nia just reminds me of a manga/anime trope where it’s like ‘want to go out?’ ‘ehhhh?’ and they walk out from a building ‘ok now we’re outside’
Brainy? Arrested? Good, GOOD. you mean I can keep my fic-in-progress as it is? I bet it’s due to lab explosions. Either the early one that made the Coluans want to pass him on from their custody. Or from trying to track down his mother. Or is it COMPUTO related? That’s right, I see you reboot-Brainy, I SEE YOU
Brainy compartmentalising his thoughts was great to see but also made me think ‘NO STOP’ because...well we know what happens to green robots who have emotions-shut down I SEE YOU CARTOONS I SEE YOU.
Karadox thoughts: (under the cut in case you’re not a fan)
ALSKJDLAJD FIRSTLY. We’re near the intro and Brainy already giving me content by stepping in and defending Kara’s actions to Colonel Hayley (also with Alex, ofc, best sister)
Brainy offered money to J’onn to help out Supergirl. I died, like...I mean J’onn would help out anyway because he is Papa J’onn but he really did that
He also had that hurt/concerned look that he had in Ahimsa, Jesse Rath why you do me like this?
80% sure he would have cried if he wasn’t compartmentalising
my optimistic brain has theorised that he’s reaching out to Nia because of the predicament that Kara is in because 1. he did so with J’onn 2. beforehand he was uncomfortable with Nia because of ‘timeline things’ and now he’s designing her suit? That has to be a big timeline no-no
I already made a joke about him designing the suit but anyways...
I think Kara would enjoy paintball and escape rooms....do it Brainy, do it
That line about him being confused about someone as beautiful as Nia being interested in someone as Brainy - all I could think was waaaait so seeing as how you’ve confused Nia and Nura before -
Maybe he’s subconciously interacting with Nia based on his simulations of how Nura would act he’s done that with Mon’El so maybeee....
DID NURA TURN YOU DOWN?, BRAINY?
Nia, a ‘Nal’ being interested is not in his data? It does not compute? This goes against character simulations? He has messed up?
because again, this goes perfectly with my fic-inprogress and headcanons/theories/whateveryou want to call them YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
#supergirl#brainiac 5#kara danvers#nia nal#karadox#nura nal#spoilers#4x10#supergirl spoilers#supergirl ramblings#my post#have a ramblings post#I have a recorded reaction but am not sure whether I want to post it or not lol#so have this instead

It's just Final Crisis left and then we're done with this team. It's been a blast falling in love with these characters all over again.
However, I still bemoan some loose ends such as;
The Time Trapper plot with Lori never being settled. What happened to her? She couldn't have died with McCauley 😬
Jacques only showing up the one time and never showing up again!
"Cub", Tinya, Jo and Brin's whole thing.
Rokk and Jazmin are they, like, together or just letting out steam?
Luornu and Chuck - they were together in Legionnaires and then were barely ever even seen together in The Legion.
Ayla and Cham - like Luornu and Chuck, we never saw their relationship develop beyond being 'together' in Legionnaires.
Robotica - I was DEEPLY invested in the Robotica arc and wanted to see more of the aftermath between Colu, Terra, Xanthu and Robotica particularly with the addition of Babbage as the cadet from Robitica as revealed in The Legion #25.
They also just looked very nice.
The Legion #25
Colu in general - it was revealed that Colu was at fault for the Metallo Virus which prompted The Great Shutdown and the subsequent entire genocide against robots with free will, and earlier it was revealed that Colu had considered selling Querl and they were in general abusive to him regardless. There was no follow up beyond Colu deciding to withdraw from the U.P.
Sharn Nux and Computo - what really happened then??? I kept expecting her to show up again.
Brainiac 4 - she really just went to an asylum, huh?
Mekt and Garth - wanted to see them talk after Garth was revealed to be alive.
Zoe - she really just faded into the background entirely.
Jenni and Dyrk - We know that Dyrk (wrongfully) became a Science Police Officer after the Time Rift incident (which makes no sense as he did not have admiration for his cop brother and in fact resented him due to his arrogance, abuse and him rubbing his career in his face) but before then Jenni and him were looking like they were going to start something together. I would have loved to get some sort of closure.
Jenni's wildly important thing with Time Trapper - this could have been implying events to happen in Final Crisis, but it is profoundly unlikely.
Koko - What was he doing with all those other space monkeys?
Mysa - just vanished entirely.
I know I am forgetting a lot more but it was still an amazing run.

Hannah Watches LoSH - Brain Drain
Brain Drain
I’m so sorry this took so long to finish. A lot of IRL issues been going on. I had to address those before putting full attention on reviews. July sucked.
This episode was another one I livestreamed. Twice. With no regrets. And the featured guests for the stream are @fade-steppin, @peskyshortcake, @cyclone-rachel and @legionworldproject
So the opening to this episode is Superman and Lightning Lad talking to Saturn Girl and Timber Wolf about Brainy acting weird in the last few days, staying inside his room/lab.
Gee, maybe it’s got something to do with the subtext from the last episode?
When Saturn Girl is telling them they shouldn’t have to assume something weird is going on, Brainy comes out of his room.
Why did he do that?!
Superman finally acts on his concern and goes to knock on Brainy’s door, although Brainy tells him to go away.
Yeah, I’m sorry but I need to assume he’s upset about the chemistry between Superman and Lightning Lad last episode.
Superman tells Computo to override the door’s lock, and the group finally sees what Brainy has been working on. A containment chamber. For Brainy.
Superman tells Brainy to explain what’s going on, and Brainy finally does so. Stating that Coluans undergo an alignment every 2 solar cycles that share their intellegence, but that B5’s process will be different because he’s no longer part of the Coluan Hive Mind. And will be unpredictable for 10 hours.
Okay so we finally learn more about Colu. And we finally know what the hologram Coluans from Fear Factory meant by “One with us again”. They were talking about the Hive Mind. Oof.
When questioned about why he didn’t tell anyone, Brainy admits it’s his first time separated for this process, and that it will be embarrassing.
Aww, my self-concious nerd.
Saturn Girl reassures him that he doesn’t have to go through this event alone, which makes him smile.
My baby~
Just as the Alignment is about to begin, Brainy gives final instructions to the others not to let him out.
At first, nothing much seems to happen. But after a few hours, it happens.
I love these parts so much. Brainy is so expressive.
When the Alignment finishes though, Brainy is still acting different from his usual self.
Superman suggests it might be normal, and then the containment unit starts to act up.
Okay, I keep replaying this part, but I'm not entirely sure if that’s what he actually says. Forgive me.
Superman goes to save Brainy from the unit before it blows from a power overload.
Platonic friendship in the background ~
The best animation.
Later, we see that Superman has Brainy wrapped in metal as he’s still incredibly active. Saturn Girl tells the group that his neuron pathways are degrading, and if it continues he will permanently shut down.
Computo tells the group that Brainy needs Zuunium radiation to reverse the alignment’s effect on him. While Brainy says he likes Timber Wolf’s pants.
Oh Brainy.
Computo then states that Zunium is only found in one place, which Timber Wolf instantly recognizes, calling it Zuun.
Brainy then has a particular reaction that at first, just seems like him being a nutcase, but makes more sense afterwards.
No one seems to pay Brainy any mind to his comments though.
Because Timber Wolf admits that he grew up on Zuun, and is then chosen to lead the mission.
I would like to know more about the transmatter gate. Why doesn't the legion have one in the HQ? Are they expensive? It would be convenient.
At the Gate Station (idk what else to call it), we see a Jabba-the-Hut inspired character runs the place and laughs at the Legion’s request at using the gate. When he relinquishes, he gives Saturn Girl a broom, calling the needed gate, Gate 11, “Old Chompy”.
Mm.
Never change B5.
Starting up the gate is nerve wracking for both Superman and Saturn Girl as it immediately sparks.
But we see Timber Wolf show a softer side to him.
Okay, this is the first time he makes a joke on the show. He’s come so far… my puppy…
Timber Wolf goes through first, followed by Superman, who is reported to be a little gate sick. When it’s Brainy’s turn, he objects as Lightning Lad carries him to the portal.
Wow. Great care skills.
However, the machine sparks. A lot.
He’s so mortified.
It turns out that not only did Brainy loose his body, but Superman has lost his powers.
After we see Superman in a suit similar to the one Timber Wolf is wearing, Brainy starts rambling again.
When Timber Wolf tells Superman that it’s not too late to go back, Superman insists on staying. Just before being handed a device to monitor to check B5’s status, and B5’s head.
Back at the gate station, Saturn Girl tells the manager that the body went missing.
RUDE.
As soon as Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad get told which gate to take to where B5’s body has been running rampant, we cut back to Zuun.
This is the major indication that Brainy is trying to tell them important stuff, but is saying it in a way that is hard to interpret.
The group encounters miners, who are not to friendly, and then we learn that Zuun’s atmosphere is toxic, and that inhaling it leads to mutations. The miners attack them, and Brainy’s head is essentially taken hostage.
While Timber Wolf is busy fighting the miners all hardcore style, Superman is stuck in a game of monkey in the middle, with Brainy as the object being tossed back and forth.
Why does Brainy say “My nose ring”? He doesn’t have one.
Rather than being saved by Superman, he’s saved by Timber Wolf, who tells Superman to run, instructing him to head to the elevator.
And we see that Superman just forgot what the ring was originally for, and has to be reminded. Wow.
As soon as he takes off, Timber Wolf gets tackled by some more miners, and tosses Brainy’s had to Superman.
Superman is butterfingers.
He stops running for a moment to look back at Timber Wolf, who is still fighting, and Timber Wolf has to tell him to keep moving.
Ok this led to some of the best comments during the streams.
Then we finally see where Brainy’s body went to. Diaphus 3. Again, winging it with spelling. But I think there’s a better description for the place.
Steven Universe’s Homeworld.
Brainy’s body proceeds to terrorize the poor Guidebot 2.9 and running into the towers, destroying the place, as Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad step through. And Saturn Girl comments that he just HAD to end up in that particular place.
Back on Zuun, Superman manages to reach the elevator, and Timber Wolf manages to shake off the miners that were clinging to him…
And then Brainy does this.
NOT HELPING.
And regarding this particular moment during the stream…
PESKY GET UR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER.
But regardless of what just happened, Timber Wolf just jumps down after the elevator, like a bad ass.
I love you my puppy.
However, three miners hop down after him. One guy is kicked off the top of the elevator – he lives (I think), and Timber Wolf makes one of the other guy’s mask crack open – his mask was the one that was notably the most intact of the miners we see.
The third miner however manages to grab him, and holds him up in the air.
OH NO.
We then cut from the tense scene back to Homeworld – I mean, Diaphus 3, where the poor tour guide is screaming for security. While B5′s body is continuing to destroy the place.
Wow. For once Lightning Lad cane make a good point about something. That isn’t his brother’s bad personality.
The moment is cut short buy Lightning Lad trying to short circuit Brainy. At first, it seems to work. But then this happens.
OUCH.
Sass.
Saturn Girl tries talking to Brainy, and at first it seems to work, but then Brainy runs off after the tourbot.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS
Saying it was worth at least a try, she then asks Lightning Lad if he has any other brilliant ideas.
Wait. Lightning Lad had an original GOOD idea? What did that punch DO to him?
Cutting away from a touching scene, Superman is still inside the elevator while the fight is still going on above him.
Thankfully, our beloved Puppy pops into the elevator, all in one piece.
But then we get some bad news, that without Superman’s powers, the Zuunium vault is not an option they can use for Brainy.
Oh Brainy.
And then we learn that there’s only one active mine left wher they can get the Zuunium, which is the core.
Now, before I proceed, you guys remember how much I kept ranting about the bad use of darkness and details together in the episode Fear Factory?
Well, I need to go at it again.
BECAUSE OF THE GOSHDARN CORE’S DARK SCENES.
Now there are other parts of the core’s settings that are much better drawn/painted, so this possibly bothers me much more this time because they could have followed the better design all the way through for this place. But they didn’t.
I won’t pick out particular shots to complain about, but just know that it pained me physically when making these gifs.
Not long after entering, they have to hide from a robot. It leaves without detecting them, but we get a funny line out of Brainy at least.
Superman asks what that was, to which Timber Wolf tells him it was a mining robot, aka mine-bot, which is the only thing that can survive in the core. And notes they are irritable.
And then they stumble in a huge group of them.
Give the mine-bot credits for strength and skills.
As they try to pull Superman apart, Timber Wolf manages to save him while carrying Brainy – again. But when he dodges one of the robots…
Ow. Poor B5.
Superman gets cornered into what I assume is an abandoned station that was meant for people, but finds something that makes him smile.
Timber Wolf is getting overpowered by the robots, and we see more goofy brainy.
WAIT. YOU HAD EXTENTIONS AND YOU DIDN'T USE THEM EARLIER?!
The problems with us watchers being adults.
When Timber Wolf is pinned down, he is saved by Superman, in what is clearly a reference to Aliens.
Nice.
I love how Timber Wolf says that.
As the two search for him, they stumble upon what at first seems like another mine-bot. But it ain’t.
My feelings too.
And another comment from Pesky.
*sigh*
Don’t change… is what I would insist on, but the monitors indicate Brainy is reaching a critical status.
Returning to Homeworld, where Brainy continues his terror, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad go through with his plan. Which is to lure Brainy to the gate with a hologram of Guidebot 2.9.
Lightning Lad, you are a constant source of bad ideas. Just look at the last episode.
Really, what did that punch do to him.
But B5 still did a lot of damage.... a lot.
Returning to Brainy’s head, the mine-bots are ganging up on them, and tearing the claw-suit Superman is using.
When Superman urgently tells Brainy that if they don’t get him to the zuunium cave, they will lose him, we get one of the best replies ever.
Superman proceeds to pick up Brainy with the claw machine while Timber Wolf keeps the mine-bots busy. Brainy however interprets Superman as a “big scary space lobster” who is trying to eat him, and pleads him to leave his brains. Even though Superman tells him to hold still, Brainy manages to destroy one claw, although is picked up by the second one.
Superman slides down into the mine, although the claw suit gets rekted. As he and Brainy go further down, Brainy starts shutting down and the suit Superman is wearing seems to be damaged by the radiation.
But that really got me in this scene is what Brainy is saying.
Oof. This stabs me in the feels.
But despite that he’s obviously being affected by the radiation, Superman picks up Brainy’s head, which fell from the robot body, and carries him to the Zuunium, even though he falls flat onto his back from several feet above while climbing down.
Superman does pass out, but does wake up when he hears Brainy calling his name.
Wow. Not gonna take that in any shippy-kinda-way…
Timber Wolf has successfully rekted all the mine-bots. What a good puppy.
Upon returning, Saturn Girl runs to Superman and asks if he’s alright, to which he replies that he thinks so. Interestingly enough, he seems to immediately bounce back as he quickly takes off the suit.
And now we have to assume that just one part of him getting exposed is enough for the effects to be reversed.
Pesky, stop.
The scene then returns to HQ, where B5 is one piece again. Literally.
Important questions.
Brainy thanks Superman for what he did, and Superman says there’s a way for him to make it up to him, to which Brainy promptly replies “Anything.”
Superman asks him to help him figure out why he lost his powers, to which Brainy immediately replies because his powers only work under a yellow sun’s light.
Now, recall what he had been rambling about earlier. Red ants. Too much red in the sun. HE WAS TRYING TO TELL SUPERMAN THAT WHILE IN CRAZY BOT MODE.
Putting that clever trick of the writers aside, Superman is shocked that Brainy knew and asks if he thinks he should be telling him stuff like that. To which Brainy says no, since there is stuff Superman needs to learn in his own time.
So final thoughts on the episode overall and characters
Plot wise, I think this is meant to be mostly a comedy episode, but the few moments that are more dramatic are deep.
So, first thing I want to discuss is Brainy and how clever the writers were with hiding accurate information on Superman’s weaknesses/backstory with his outburst. Very good. This went over my head when I first saw it. Heck, I didn't even realize the red ants part until someone brought it up a while back.
And another thing that I feel is worth mentioning is the exact order of the production episodes and what it implies. So, this episode originally came out before Lightning Storm, when the production is in reverse. In Lightning Storm, Brainy shows up briefly, but doesn’t contribute much. But with this episode, we can assume a reason why.
He was busy getting ready for the Alignment. It makes perfect sense! Lightning Lad says he had been in his lab for days, and while that can easily have been blamed on upcoming auditions and roaming kids who want to audition, it makes more sense that Brainy would have been working on the containment unit.
Although I still want to believe some of the sulky behavior was from the chemistry between Lightning Lad and Superman in the last episode.
I can’t believe this show got away with so much.
As for his personality during the Alignment, we see him go off the walls. Which we all enjoyed thoroughly. Unlike in his usual logic mode, he doesn’t hesitate to blurt out important stuff about Superman. But he does so in a way that people won’t understand easily. As for his weirder comments, hard to tell if that was revealing more of his interests, or if he was just blurting out random things.
Regarding his expressions/animations during these parts, I really wished we got more stuff like this in other episodes.
And as for his serious mode, we see more of his insecurities. He doesn’t want to be embarrassed by his behavior, hence why he went to such lengths to hide what was going on.
With his whole secret hiding habits, we can under stand why with Superman’s case. No one wants the world to come to an end in this show due to time continuum getting botched up. But we see it goes beyond just Superman’s life. And if the other’s didn’t intervene, he would have died.
As for the Alignment and Colu itself, both remind me of what I said about Coluan culture in Fear Factory. Lack of individuality. There is a Hive Mind, that all Coluans are naturally linked to. Intellegences is uploaded and shared with other Coluans. That… indicates a good lack of privacy. We don’t know the extent of how much data is shared. But good chances are it’s a lot.
Brainy is a private person. That much we know. No wonder he cut himself off from the Hive Mind.
Second topic to get into is Timber Wolf.
He has grown so much from when we saw him in Phantoms. From the team’s reclusive lone wolf (get it?), who took everything seriously, to a more social being who is a bad ass leader that makes jokes and saves his teammates, repetitively.
With no complaints.
Like, every time. And tells Superman he can go back when he lost his powers.
He was… almost…
Dad-like…
Well, I guess we’ll put this in the evidence locker that Timber Wolf would make the best dad.
So, rather than spending his whole life on Raal, he spent some time on Zuun as well, possibly more because he states he grew up there.
Zuun is not a good state. It’s like, a type of Post- Apocalypse bad. Toxic air that mutates anything that breathes it? Definitely not a good sign. I’m putting my money down there was some kind of industrial/chemical disaster that ruined everything for anything organic, hence why mine-bots were so numerous. But there are still people who are stuck living there. And there are a lot of buildings standing, in good condition. Plus we don’t find out if the air can actually kill people or not.
Well, I doubt the show would have been allowed to say it outright due to censorship. But implications would have been nice.
And remember that Timber Wolf seems to lack knowledge on certain (trivial in 31st century) stuff? Seeing the state of Zuun, it’s not hard to imagine a lack of sufficient educational sources.
So Zuun is not the ideal place to live, even if it’s inhabital in some degree.
We don’t learn much about the people who still live there. Which to me is a disappointment. We could have learned more on Timber Wolf’s background before he was transformed.
Ironically, Raal is in a way the opposite. It’s biologically safe to live there. If you just look at that aspect and had to pick between that place and Zuun, you would go there in a heartbeat.
Unless you knew someone was performing illegal experiments on the wild life and his children.
Moving on.
Saturn Girl is once again the Team Mom, and we see more chemistry between her and Lightning Lad in this episode. We also see that she will attempt to talk to people first before taking more aggressive action. And we see more of that wonderful sass of hers. But not much happens with her in terms of development.
Nothing much to report on Lightning Lad… except he had an original GOOD idea. And if there’s anything we can go off from the last episode, original ideas of his own are NEVER good.
And finally down to who I really want to talk to. Superman.
This is the second time he loses his powers, although this time, there is initially no explanation. But he still insists on helping Brainy out. He is that person who will go out of his way to help others.
Even though he’s constantly the damsel in distress. Not that I’m complaining.
We also see how much he has adjusted to his powers, given that it doesn’t even occur to him to use the flight ring when the suit is too heavy to really run in.
Recall that in the first episode, he’s learning how to fly, and is shaky with it. It reminds us that he needed someplace to safely explore his powers, and that Smallville wasn’t that place.
But then there’s the part towards the end when he learns Brainy is hiding secrets from him.
Recall what Drax told him in in Phantoms, that Brainy is hiding more things than Superman is aware of. Superman doesn’t seem to take this to heart then. But now… he will. He should realize Drax was telling the truth with that.
This is definetly going to effect their relationship.
… But sadly, this aspect is hardly played in the show as much as I would have seen it go. As Rachel did mention in the chat image at the end.
The first time I watched this episode, I legitimately thought we were going to get some serious plot line, revealing Brainy’s lineage to the original Brainiac. And build way more on the Colu culture. But the writers went in a different direction. A very different direction, that was still good, but I still wish they could have delved in deeper.
Well, that’s all from me for now. Assuming I don’t get any surprise shifts from work, I hope to get the next review in two weeks at most.
