People love stories about videos or films that cause people to go crazy.
You wanna see a real life version of that? One that doubles as a test of your coding skills?
It’s called “4 Dimensional Operating System” and it’s a Kickstarter video from 2016. Click on the video and watch it for as long as you can - all the way to the end, if possible.
Don’t know anything about computers? You’re safe, at most you’ll be mildly confused and a little amused. You’ll complain about how these instructions don’t work and nothing happened.
Beginner level programmer? You might feel a mild annoyance at some statements but you’ll be fine once it’s over.
Intermediate level? Oh boy, you’re going to feel annoyed and frustrated when you see this. However, you’ll be able to hold your tongue and sit through this video. These feelings will pass almost immediately after the video is over.
Advanced level? You’re FUCKED. You’ll be SO ANGRY at this video. You won’t be able to stop yourself from telling others how wrong it is, you’re going to rant and rave about everything the speaker got wrong. You might even need to stop the video to share your thoughts. Anyone within a couple meters of you is going to have to hear ALL your thoughts about computers, about code, about whatever your particular technical niche is, all because of this video. You won’t be able to stop yourself from seeking out someone to talk to. It’s as if you’re possessed. Once the video is over, it’ll take you a few minutes to return to normal. Keep all the sharp tools away from you until you’re done.
Expert level? There is no return.
Bonus test: if you’re not very computer savvy, show this video to a friend you think might be an expert programmer and ask them to explain why this video is wrong. Their level of anger will determine how much they really know about code. (Also it’ll be really funny to see them struggle.)
Now, you can build immunity to this video after a few viewings. Watching it with another person present will amplify the feelings you experience, so keep that in mind.
Want to know how good a programmer you are? Check the video out here.

I have no interest of going to university ever again, however there's this MA/PhD programme in Sound Design in Berlin I'd be tempted to attend sometimes, I went to the rundgang in 2022 and liked it!
Alternatively I would consider computer science so I could pursue software engineering as a day job but ngl that's more of a backup plan I'd rather just have to pay the bills and am not actually interested in pursuing beyond having the possibility to work in most countries

Please hold
The project to convert my buildscripts to Kotlin is on hold because I have an EXCITING NEW PROJECT.
Earlier this month (June 2024) Mazhar Akbar drew my attention to his performance comparison between JMonkeyEngine and Godot on a physics-intensive workload. The comparison favored Godot by a large margin. I was skeptical at first, but gradually I became convinced that, in order to level the field, JMonkeyEngine needs a new physics engine, one based on Jolt Physics instead of Bullet.
So now I'm coding all-new JVM bindings for Jolt. Jolt is an open-source software project of some complexity (about 100,000 lines of C++ code), so this could take awhile. Please hold. But not your breath.
I'm having a blast!

Also, something to remember is that "open source" isn't a fancy computer way to say "free software"; it means "the underlying computer code is available for anyone to see and use." So for an established open-source software, you can look around and probably find reviews in places where any independent computer geeks who poked around in the code and found problems could sound the alarm. Proprietary software developers have an incentive to convince you to trust their software and be scared of the competition, but the general population of internet computer geeks doesn't have an incentive to lure you into installing harmful software.
One person/site hawking freeware you've never heard of may be malicious, but if you search for an open-source software like Libreoffice, and see that, e.g., Wikipedia doesn't list any controversies, and dedicated computer-related review sites don't flag it as risky, and computer geeks on Reddit recommend it, etc., then you're probably OK. It might not be the slick, pretty, lead-the-user-by-the-hand experience that a lot of big proprietary software seems to prioritize now, but that's learning curve, not danger.
before it gets bad I'm just gonna tell y'all certain rich people have literally only recently noticed Open Source software availability compromises the bottom line of their proprietary investments so if you see little chickadees on this website talking about the dangers of Open Source software all of a sudden it's cuz they accidentally sipped some koolaid mixed up by the far right yacht people to fuck with peoples software sovereignty and right to repair, modify, and redistribute robust codebases that become a problem when 30% of your portfolio is in, oh, say, adobe or openai.
This is your unfriendly neighborhood computer fucker telling you not to fall for it and to demand your right to digital sovereignty rather than trusting companies to make correct choices about what to do with the parts of your life they would very much like to have in the cloud to continue improving their products.

Being wrong
About fixing software defects, Steve McConnell says: "Before you make a change, be confident that it will work. Being wrong about a change should leave you astonished. It should cause self-doubt, personal reevaluation, and deep soul-searching." (Code Complete 2nd ed., p. 553)
