10 things for 10 people you’d like to know better!
Tagged by the lovely @holy-ships-x-red-lips . Thank you for tagging me, friend! I started to answer these on Thursday, which means I've had to change some answers multiple times. (A problem of my own making. I kept forgetting about posting it.)
Last Song: I'm listening to my SNTV vinyl today! So, Dear John as of answering this. I still can't believe I got to experience it live. If I close my eyes while listening to it, I see my view of that sea of purple lights.
Last book: I'm about halfway into The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller! That I've finished? Sunrise on the Reaping. I've started a bunch lately but haven't finished that many! (I gotta get back to The Secret History, which I was enjoying, but I knew I wouldn't finish in time for the book club.)
Last movie: I need to get back to watch more movies. Can't remember the last one at home, but A Real Pain in cinemas a while ago. (Oh, I think the "El Mago Pop Lands in USA" doc counts! We just finished that one and now my dad regrets not getting tickets… I spent the entire winter asking him.)
Last TV show: if long YT videos don't count, High Potential on Disney+. It was fun to see TJ Thyne and Nasim Pedrad on the one we watched last night! (I think it was 11?) I'll probably watch Hacks in a bit, too.
Favourite colour: Purple! I like all shades, but warmer purples that are almost reddish, I love.
Sweet, savoury, or spicy: Sweet.
Relationship status: 🧍♀️
Last thing I googled: Several attempts at trying to find an available copy of Gracie's RSD First. If I can't get it tomorrow from a few EU/UK stores I have my eye on, I'll wait for the inevitable drop on her website. (I just hope I'll have made it home by 9PM!)
Current obsession: These are unserious ones, but no less true, lmao. Raging about different aspects of RSD in town, but I'm glad I did my chill thing in the afternoon. (However much you think you've heard me rant about it, it's just a fraction of what poor Waves has.)
Also, constantly refreshing the couple of things that are on their way (esp my tgw deluxe, which has to be my slowest eBay/GSP experience so far… no one needs to hear my rant about how the seller was very nice but wasn't really listening to what I was saying. That package spent 10 days at UK GSP without being scanned!!!!). Anyway, I think it'd be hilarious if the other GSP shipment from the US got here before tgw.
Looking forward to: Tuesday onwards! I'm taking Tues and Wed off (I should've also taken tomorrow off lbr, but I'm planning on taking a random Monday off next month instead, iykyk). I'm also curious to see what comes out of my car dealership visit on Tuesday! I don't mind an almost new/KM 0 car vs a new, personalizable one that might be ready in September. I haven't really driven since I got my license.
Tagging: @likeanorangeonatoothpick @kidmccabe @malkaleh @maryoliveoil @unseenacademic @leoleofitz @jessbakescakes @bartletslesbians @etherealthv @district447
(As usual, if you want to do it, consider yourself tagged! And if you don't want to do it, that's also fine! I forget who's done this, so I went with the last few moots I've seen in my dash.)
#10 things to get to know me better#the car is going to put an end to the vinyl collecting real fast (no it likely won't)#the car thing is that I had contacted a family friend to help me find great deals on used cars but apparently none of them are good enough#but my metro line is going under construction to become automatized so my usual public transport commute is going to take a tad longer then

spencer reid x fem!bsf!reader tw .' consented over the clothes handjob , slight somnophilia , un-beta'd :'(
masterlist | series masterlist | dividers by @cafekitsune | join the taglist
imagine giving bsf!spence a ride home
he’s so tired he nearly buckles at the knees outside the airport. you offer before he can think to ask. 'do you want a ride home?'
he blinks at you, still sleep-heavy and blinking too slowly. he should say no. he knows that he should say no. that with everything that happened in that hotel room with you. he should run for the hills, if not for your sake than for his. he doesn't know how many more pants he has left for you to ruin.
he should shake his head and turn you down cold, because were his best friend and he needed to preserve that line. with whatever misguided theology allowed him to both make you coffee in the morning and fuck his hand to the sound of your moans. but he was so, so tired. worn out infinitely. from the case, from the police investigators, the victims families, and most of all by you. you and your inconspicuously low neckline blouse. he swears at this point you just out to torture him, or humiliate him into another unannounced boner while he is supposed to be focusing on the case.
so in conclusion, it was really your fault when the quiet 'you sure?' fell from his lips. almost as if this is how you planned it from the beginning. you knew spencer like the back of your hand. you knew he was always emotionally physically drained at the end of each case. you knew he always took the metro to and from work not because he couldn't drive but because he chooses not to. because he is simply disinterested in doing so. which is precisely how you knew in your bones that this was the perfect opportunity for some unfiltered spencer reid quality time. because lets be honest, while on a case, spencer is strictly all work and no play, even when it comes to you.
you nod. 'you’ll fall asleep on the metro and end up in, i don't know, fucking delaware.'
he doesn’t even have the stregth to come up with an excuse. he supposed that this is just you being his best friend. becuase he has no other reason to suspect otherwise ( because you moaning his name, soaking his thigh, and dry humping him within an inch of your life is just normal best friend things, right? ). he'd told himself that because how was he supposed to look you in the eyes if he didn't.
it wasn't like you were actually dreaming about him anyway ( despite the indisputable evidence of him hearing you moan his names upward of three different times ). and if you were dreaming about him, he'd told himself it was proximity and an overactive sex drive, nothing more.
so he just shrugs, hoists his go-bag higher on his shoulder, and trudges after you to the parking garage like a baby duck. he doesn’t notice that your hand trembles when you unlock the car. doesn’t see your little inhale as you adjust the seat to his preference. doesn’t question the half-empty water bottle you left for him in the cupholder. because most of these things were routine for him, for you.
and he’s too tired.
he collapses into the passenger seat with a soft groan and lets his head fall back against the rest. he rubs one eye beneath his glasses and mumbles, 'you’re a godsend.' and damn him if he didn't know what that had done to your gut ( and your cunt ).
you drive in silence for a few minutes, letting the city blur past in golden streaks. spencer shifts beside you, deeper into the seat, until he’s almost fully reclined. his eyes flutter closed. he starts to nod off.
but you, you take the long way home. you don’t say anything at first. just murmur something about construction. he hums faintly and doesn’t question you. because what possible reason could you have for lying.
but then, you reach for him.
your hand rests casually—innocently—on his thigh at first. just above the knee. just pressure, something comforting and familiar. best friend things, he repeats in his sleep drowsy mind.
he shifts slightly toward you in his sleep, like a flower tilting toward the sun.
and then—like a dream again, just like two nights ago in the hotel—your hand drifts higher.
you cup him over his slacks.
you feel the moment he jolts awake. it’s subtle. just a breath caught in his chest. a twitch in his fingers. his head still tilted toward the window, lips parted. but he’s wide awake now.
'wh—' he doesn’t even get the whole word out.
because you palm him once. just a gentle pass of pressure over the soft length of him.
he shudders because how can he not. 'are you—?' he tries again.
but your hand moves again, slower this time. fingers grazing the inseam, pressing just enough to make him twitch.
and oh, he twitches.
he gasps, breathlessly quiet, and grips the seatbelt buckle like it’s a lifeline. because holy shit, you’re touching him. for real this time. awake and on purpose.
his brain shorts out.
you had to have known what you were doing to him. all week. every lingering look. every flirt. the way you’d casually undressed in front of him in the hotel. the way you’d curled into his body like a sleepy succubus and moaned his name like a prayer. and yet, since that night, you’d acted like nothing happened.
you’d let him believe it meant nothing. that he was the pervert for feeling everything so deeply.
but now?
now your hand is slowly working him through his pants. one pass becomes two and by the third, he’s fully hard beneath your palm.
'sweetheart—' he manages, finally turning to look at you. his voice is a mess of guilt and need and stunned disbelief. 'what are you—?'
'relax,' you murmur, eyes still on the road, voice soft. 'there’s traffic ahead.'
there’s not. but he’s too busy trying not to explode to notice. 'is this okay?' you add, a beat later.
he swallows hard and nods once, rapid, and you feel him pulse in your hand. 'yeah,' he says, barely more than a whisper. 'yeah—it’s okay.'
you smile just slightly. your thumb grazes the tip of him through the fabric, and his hips fucking jerk.
god, he’s so close already. it’s embarrassing. he’s half-asleep and three seconds from creaming his pants like a teenager and you’re barely touching him.
his breath hitches again as you palm him once more, slower this time—meaner. like you know exactly how to drag it out.
he’s panting now, teeth clenched, jaw tight.
and you just keep driving.
like your hand isn’t wrapped around the hard line of him. like you aren’t single-handedly shattering every wall he’s ever built between just friends and this.
and god help him—he doesn’t want you to stop.
you don’t stop.
you really don’t stop and spencer doesn’t know how he’s still breathing.
your hand is slow, torturous. every pass over his length makes his hips twitch and his face scrunch in half-shame, half-bliss. you’re so calm about it. like you’re idly adjusting the volume dial or checking the weather on your phone.
meanwhile, he’s dying in the passenger seat.
he’d been half-asleep a minute ago. slumped against the window like an overworked librarian. and now—now he’s leaking into his boxers, gripping the edge of the seat so hard his knuckles ache.
'sweethe-…' he whimpers, voice ragged. 'i—i’m gonna—'
you nod gently, hand still moving. 'i know, baby. thats okay, go ahead.'
he almost whimpers. 'will you cum for me spencey?'
this time he does whimper, loudly. the praise. the name. it’s too much.
he lets out a stuttered gasp—body jerking, chest heaving, toes curling in his shoes. his hips rut up weakly against your palm, and you don’t stop. not when his twitching increases and the wet patch spreads warm against the fabric.
and all of this—he comes right as you turn onto his street.
it’s humiliating. immediate. a raw, desperate thing—his thighs tense, hips jerk, and his breath shudders out of him like a man unraveling. his hand flies to your dashboard like he might need to brace himself just to survive it.
you don’t say a word.
your palm still rests over his cock, stroking him through the thick, sticky fabric of his pants. he twitches once, twice—then melts back into the seat with a broken little whimper.
he’s breathing hard. too hard. like he just ran laps.
and you're still driving. still humming. still completely unaffected while he's sitting next to you in wet pants.
your car eases up to the curb outside his apartment, you parked and sat quietly.
only then do you finally glance at him. spencer can’t meet your eyes. he feels ridiculous. used, satisfied, and devastated, all at once.
his voice is hoarse when he blurts, 'do you want to come up?' you blink, slow and unreadable. 'what?'
he rushes to clarify. 'i mean—you don’t have to, obviously—but i thought maybe you might want to—i mean, you just—' he gestures vaguely toward his lap, toward the clear evidence of what you’ve just done to him. 'i thought maybe it—?'
you don’t answer right away and that silence kills him. he panics immediately. 'oh my god, i—i’m sorry. that was presumptuous. i didn’t mean to assume—'
'spence,' you interrupt gently.
he freezes.
you rest your hand on his arm—warm, reassuring, like he’s not seconds away from sprinting into traffic to escape his shame.
'it’s not a rejection,' you say softly. 'you just need to rest.'
he blinks, confused. 'rest?'
you nod. 'you were dozing off on my window twenty minutes ago. barely conscious. i just gave you an orgasm so intense you forgot how to breathe.'
'i—' he sputters. 'i’m fine. i’m not tired—'
'mhm.' your smirk betrays you.
'really, i can—'
you lean in, just a little. Just enough for your lips to hover by his ear. 'next time you invite me up,' you whisper, 'you’re going to need your energy.'
his throat clicks as he swallows.
you pull back with a smug smile and open your door. tthe night air rushes in.
'text me when you’re inside, okay?' you say sweetly, like you didn’t just absolutely wreck him in the front seat of your car.
then you're gone.
and spencer? he sits there in the dark, pants still damp, heartbeat still climbing, wondering how in the hell he’ll survive the next time.
if there’s a god, he thinks, she’s got a wicked sense of humor.
and a silk tank top.
and she just hand-fucked him into another dimension.

Climate change-driven heatwaves threaten millions
Extreme record-breaking heat leads to severe crises across the world.
Already in 2024, from Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria in the West; to Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines in the East; large regions of Asia are experiencing temperatures well above 40°C (104°F) for days on end.
The heatwave has been particularly difficult for people living in refugee camps and informal housing, as well as for unhoused people and outdoor workers.
Using the Heat Index Calculator, at that temperature and a relative humidity of 50%, residents see a heat index of 55°C (131°F) - a temperature level humans cannot long survive:

In February, the southern coastal zone of West Africa also experienced abnormal early-season heat. A combination of high temperatures and humid air resulted in average heat index values of about 50°C (122°F) - the danger level, associated with a high risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
Locally, temperatures entered the extreme danger level associated with high risk of heat stroke, with values up to 60°C (140°F):

Even here at Ad Astra's HQ in Kansas, last summer we saw several days with high temperatures of 102°F (39°C) at 57% humidity, resulting in a heat index of 133°F (56°C):

Of course, the major difference in survivability in Kansas versus some of the places suffering extreme heat right now is that air-conditioning abounds here. Those who live somewhere that faces extreme heat but can escape it indoors are a lot more likely to survive, but a person who lives somewhere without such life-saving gear faces not just discomfort, but heat stroke and even death.
This includes unhoused and poor people here in the wealthier parts of the world, who often do not have access to indoor refuge from the heat.
About 15% of US residents live below the poverty line. Many low-wage earners work outside in construction or landscaping, exposed to the ravages of heat. Many do not own an air conditioner, and those who do might need to budget their body's recovery from heat against cost to purchase and run cooling equipment. Because heat stress is cumulative, when they go to work the next day, they’re more likely to suffer from heat illness.
Bad as that is, for those living on the street, heatwaves are merciless killers. Around the country, heat contributes to some 1,500 deaths annually, and advocates estimate about half of those people are homeless. In general, unhoused people are 200 times more likely to die from heat-related causes than sheltered individuals.
For example, in 2022, a record 425 people died from heat in the greater Phoenix metro area. Of the 320 deaths for which the victim’s living situation is known, more than half (178) were homeless. In 2023, Texans experienced the hottest summer since 2011, with an average temperature of 85.3°F (30°C) degrees between June and the end of August. Some cities in Texas experienced more than 40 days of 100°F (38°C) or higher weather. This extreme heat led to 334 heat-related deaths, the highest number in Texas history and twice as many as in 2011.
The Pacific Northwest of Canada and the USA suffered an extreme heat event in June, 2021, during which 619 people died. Many locations broke all-time temperature records by more than 5°C, with a new record-high temperature of 49.6°C (121°F). This is a region ill-suited to such weather, and despite having relatively high wealth compared to much of the world, many homes and businesses there do not have air-conditioning due to a history of much lower temperatures.
Heatwaves are arguably the deadliest type of extreme weather event because of their wide impact. While heatwave death tolls are often underreported, hundreds of deaths from the February heatwave were reported in the affected countries, including Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
Extreme heat also has a powerful impact on agriculture, causing crop damage and reduced yields. It also impacts education, with holidays having to be extended and schools closing, affecting millions of students - in Delhi, India, schools shut early this week for summer when temperatures soared to 47°C (117°F) at dangerous humidity levels:

At 70°C (157°F !), humans simply cannot function and face imminent death, especially when humidity is high. This is the notion of "heat index," a derivative of "wet-bulb temperature."
Though now mostly calculated using heat and humidity readings, wet-bulb temperature was originally measured by putting a wet cloth over a thermometer and exposing it to the air.
This allowed it to measure how quickly the water evaporated off the cloth, representing sweat evaporating off skin.
The theorized human survival limit has long been 35°C (95°F) wet-bulb temperature, based on 35°C dry heat at 100% humidity - or 46°C (115°F) at 50% humidity. To test this limit, researchers at Pennsylvania State University measured the core temperatures of young, healthy people inside a heat chamber.
They found that participants reached their "critical environmental limit" - when their body could not stop the core temperature from continuing to rise – at 30.6°C wet bulb temperature, well below what was previously theorized. That web-bulb temperature parallels a 47°C (117°F) heat index.
The team estimates that it takes between 5-7 hours before such conditions reach "really, really dangerous core temperatures."
youtube
On March 5, 2024, Hong Kong saw temperatures of 27°C (80°F) with 100% humidity, which results in a heat index of 32.2°C (90°F) - seemingly not so bad until considering it's higher than the critical wet-bulb temperature. Also, if you watch the video, imagine the long-term effects of water accumulating in residences, such as dangerous mold.
We are witnessing the effects of climate change right now, all around the world, and rising temperatures are just the most-obvious (what we used to call "global warming"). Many, many other side-effects of climate change are beginning to plague us or headed our way soon, and will affect us all.
Unfortunately, those most affected - and those being hit the hardest right now - are people most vulnerable to heatwaves. With climate crises increasing in both intensity and frequency, and poverty at dangerous levels, we face a rapidly rising, worldwide crisis.
We must recognize the climate crisis as an international emergency and treat it as such. So much time, creative energy, resources, and life is wasted in war and the pursuit of profit or power - consider how much good could come from re-allocating those resources to ensuring a future for Earthlings, instead.
(Expect to see a "Science into Fiction" workshop on climate change coming soon - SF writers have a particular responsibility to address such important topics of change and global consequence.)
#climate crisis#climate change#global warming#heatwaves#poverty and homelessness#climate emergency#in response to asks for a post on this topic#stay tuned for posts on other crises arising from climate change

I guess my question about rolling stock then becomes, why didn't they standardize the platform heights? It seems to be making things more complicated than they need to be.
Long answer time: So the T was originally built with streetcars, that were all low boarding. It's the oldest system in the US, continuously operating since 1896. The oldest tracks in the network were horse drawn streetcars from the 1850s.
In 1904, the blue line opens as the final major route that makes up the modern system. It is owned and operated by the BTC, a public commission for public transit. However, the red and orange lines are operated by the Boston Elevated Railway. Disagreements between the BERy and the BTC and the collapse of the BTC in 1918 during the conversion to heavy rail lead to the construction of High floor streetcar compliant platforms on all blue line stations, the same height as the current high floor trains on the green line. However, the BERy moves forward with its heavy metro conversions on the red and orange lines.

Rome is Building an Eight-Story Underground Museum – But Treasures Keep Getting in the way
Rome, as it’s often said, wasn’t built in a day. And nowhere is that more evident than its state-of-the-art Metro Line C, an ambitious project meant to help relieve the Italian capital’s renowned traffic hellscape and celebrate its rich archeological history with a unique-in-the-world underground museum.
The €700 million line ($757.7 million) was originally envisioned for the Catholic Jubilee of 2000 as a vital link between Rome’s San Giovanni Cathedral and Vatican City’s St. Peter’s Basilica, making it easier for visiting pilgrims to collect indulgences by walking through the churches’ holy doors. Rome’s major basilicas open their holy doors only during Jubilee years, allowing Catholics from all over the world to make pilgrimages to the city to walk through them, symbolizing an openness to receive mercy and reconciliation.

But the 2000 dream never happened, thanks to a series of problems ranging from a corruption scandal in the city government and the sheer number of archeological objects – 40,000 in all, from petrified peach pits to pottery and vases and even the walls and mosaics of Emperor Hadrian’s 2,000-year-old military barracks – found with each shovel full of dirt during the initial preparations.
Now the hope is to have the line’s showcase Piazza Venezia stop, featuring an eight-story underground museum, ready in 10 years, according to engineer Andrea Sciotti, who is in charge of the metro museum complex. This will allow them to open around the Jubilee of 2033, which will mark 2,000 years since the death of Jesus Christ.
“It’s true, 10 years seems like a long time, but we aren’t just dealing with the engineering issues,” Sciotti said inside the construction site. “This station will be judged as the most beautiful in the world … we don’t have to rely on museum items being brought in, the museum station is in its original context in ancient Rome.”

Displayed where they were found:
During the initial phases of work carried out in the last five years, Sciotti said all of the artifacts were removed from the site for restoration. Each will be placed exactly where it was found inside the metro museum, which is being dug some 85 meters (280 feet) deep, encompassing eight stories below the modern city of Rome.
Over the millennia the modern city has been built over covered ruins. Only around 10% of ancient Rome has been excavated, with the rest still buried some nine meters (30 feet) below the current city, according to Rome’s tourist bureau. The city dates back to the stone age and construction work is notoriously hampered by the discovery of ruins that are too plentiful to even excavate and are often reburied to preserve them. Even simple infrastructure work, like sewage repairs, have to be attended by archeologists who have the power to stop the work if something is found.
There will be 27 escalators, six elevators and 66,000 square meters of archeological exhibit space. Ancient walls found during excavations will be placed “in situ” in the modern station and the ancient Via Flaminia that ran through the ancient city to the nearby Roman Forum and Colosseum.
The station’s three main entrances will connect the three museums around the square: the Vittoriano, the Palazzo Venezia and the outdoor ruins of the Roman Forum anchored by the Colosseum at the far end, which has its own metro station that will also feature museum and exhibit space.

Several of the archeological sites will have access points from inside the metro museum, meaning commuters and tourists alike can exit the station by rambling through historically significant ruins like Hadrian’s Auditorium, which was discovered when the initial archeological investigation into the project started and was meant to be the location of the station entrance. Since then, they moved the site and excavated the ruins, which are currently only visible looking down from street level.
‘Top down’ excavation system:
To secure the site as they dig, engineers are using a “top down” excavation system, which has never been used in Italy but was an integral part of the Jubilee line in London. Cross walls and diaphragms are being buried deep into the soil to form the perimeter of the underground complex, with the dirt taken out recycled and enhanced to be used in the building materials, Sciotti said.
The train tunnels themselves are not the issue since they will be more than 100 feet below ground.

The Venezia station museum stop is not the only treasure on the new line. In 2016, archeologists working on the site of the Porta Metronia (previously known as the Ambra Aradam) station found a 39-room complex that spanned more than 9,700 square feet that has been incorporated into the underground station, which will open by the end of 2024. In 2025, the new Colosseo-Fori station, complete with a four-level underground museum to showcase artifacts including 25 archaic wells unearthed when it was built, will also open after activation tests, meant to begin in October, are completed.
The entire 26-kilometer C-line will be Italy’s first fully automated driver-less subway system and will reduce road traffic by 400,000 vehicles a day, meaning CO2 emissions will be reduced by some 310,000 tonnes a year, according to the WeBuild group, which is the main contractor for the project.
The original plans from the 2000 Jubilee have been modified to eliminate several stations in the historical center that would have simply been too difficult to excavate.
By Barbie Nadeau.

With the long awaited release of the Goldenberg Report, Toronato Township ‘big city dream’ of the future now looms as a more distinct possibility all the time.
Township Reeve Robert Speck has already asked that a study be made of this area with the view of forming some type of metro-type plan here. At the present time, the township has its application for town status pending before the Ontario Municipal(?) Board. This application was considered to be the first important step towards ultimately forming a city here with the towns of Port Credit and Streetsville joining up with its township, at some time in the future.
In past discussions between representatives Toronto Township, Port Credit and Streetsville it was a generally agreed amalgamation of these three municipalities would come about in the near future — possibly 4 to 5 years from now.
Any instant ‘amalgamation’, however, was frowned upon by most members of Post Credit and Streetsville councils as they felt such a move would be too much costly for their people right now.
It is not known right at this time what will happen to the township’s application for town status since the suggestion for a complete study of metro-type possibilities here could tangle up this move.
Whatever the future holds for this rapidly growing area, it is crystal clear that Toronto Township — and Port Credit and Streetsville too for that manner — are growing in leaps and bounds. Post Credit is growing up, changing the heart of its-

-area into a high rise sector: Streetsville has plans for expansion in all directions and Toronto Township itself is a bee-hive of industrial and residential growth.
The Sheridan Park Research Centre — known as Canada’s space age city — is rapidly taking shape and the long range forecast is that it will eventually be a $100,000,000 scientific complex with new developments all around it.
And, to make the whole picture even that much more exciting, you and I are right in the middle of this overall plan.
Township Puts Skids On Skateboards
Toronto Township passed a resolution Monday that a bylaw be prepared to prohibit the use of skateboards on public sidewalks and roadways in the township.
A number of members of council have expressed some concern over the hazards which go hand in hand with the use of ‘ski’s on skates’.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States. The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science. SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research. The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network. Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor. Gary’s always loved science. He was the dorky school kid who spent his weekends at the Australian Museum. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on a career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. His first gigs were spent as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist, and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. That compares to the ABC’s overall radio listenership of just 5.6 per cent. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually. However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage. Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently. StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016. Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Over the phone
Anton Ivanov x reader
Notes: you and Anton have sex over the phone. Reader has a dick, but is kept gender neutral. not proofread or edited. this is like. porn so minors stay out!
Dhkshs why are there like. almost no anton fics. why is he on my mind so MUCH ARGH
-CLUNK-
"Good job, Hans! Keep going. Put your robotic arms to good use, bro!", Anton yelled. They had just managed to put the machines back together after the incident with the Prototype and already put them back on the grind. The metro system won't renovate itself after all.
Hans yelled back "You got it bro! Just putting in the work, haha!"
"Be careful not to overdo it! Hans only just got repaired... It would be a shame if I had to take him apart again~"
At Grace's words a shudder ran across the machine. Anton sympathized with him. The thought of being taken apart didn't sit well with him either. But as long as it kept the machines on the right track, he let Grace say whatever she wanted. Not that he could've stopped her anyways.
The vibration of his phone interrupted his tboughts. Sneaking a glance at his display, he was delighted to find out you were calling him- although you usually didn't call while he was at work. Worried something might have happened, he called out to Grace.
"I'll be right back, Gracie! Just got a call to take. Hans, you know what to do bro!"
"Got it, bro!"
Winking at him, Grace replied.
"Don't take too long flirting with your sweetheart~"
Waving her off and ignoring the way her words flustered him, he strutted to his makeshift office where the construction and machinery noises were significantly quieter. Thankful you waited on the line, he picked up your call.
"Hey babe, what's up?"
Only heavy breathing responded. Were you hurt? Running away from someone?
"Darling? Can you talk?"
A moan responded him. For a second he misconstrued it as a moan of pain, but then you finally began to speak.
"Antonnnn..... I miss you so, ngh, so much..... Wish you were here right now..... Mmmnnngh.... "
It was then that he also recognized the distinct wet noises in the background. He swallowed hard.
"Babe... can you tell me what you're doing right now?"
"Hmm.... I'm jerking off right now... Imagining it's your hand that's squeezing my dick right now... Rubbing your thumb into my slit.... Ah, I'm oozing so much...."
Anton felt his blood rushing to his cock. Any plans he had to hang up after you told him why you called him went out the window at your response. Instead he checked he had the door closed properly and leaned against it, ensuring it wouldn't open without him noticing. Then, he carefully reached down to palm his own crotch.
"Couldn't you wait for me to come home? You know I can't really take calls at work..."
You let out a chuckle.
"You've been coming home so late Anton... I just couldn't wait anymore... Mmph... Plus from what I'm hearing on my end, you're not faring much better than me..."
It was true. While you were talking, Anton had snuck his hand into his boxers and was gently stroking his cock in his underwear. His breathing had picked up and he was occasionally letting out small grunts.
"Fine, I admit defeat... But how could I possibly resist when you just sound so hot..."
"Hehehe... You know Anton... I've been craving to touch you again... Those tits of yours must be calling for me~ I've been wanting to suck on them and knead them so much these past few weeks... You always moan so deliciously... Ahhh..."
"Oh babe..."
"I just wish you were here now... I'd suck marks into your skin so everyone would know I fuck you the best... I'd press your dick against mine and cover both of them with lube... Wrap our hands around them and thrust into your dick and our hands... See which of us cums first... All the while I'd latch onto your nipple and suck so hard it'll be sore like your muscles are after a hard day of work~"
Anton groaned at your words. The scenes you were describing were vivid in his head. He picked up the speed of his strokes.
"Hahh... Tell me more please..."
"Since you asked so nicely~ I'll lick all over your entire body, cleaning any remaining sweat off of you... Then I'll slide down to kiss your cock... I'll first use my hands to jerk you off, paying special attentions to your glans... I'll tighten my grip especially there... Then I'll lean down to take the head of your dick in my mouth and I'll swirl my tongue around it before sucking on it lightly... When I've gotten used to feeling the weight of your cock in my mouth, I'll sink down to take you whole~"
At those words, Anton's face twisted in elation, hips bucking forward and moaning wildly. He kept gently stroking himself at your instructions, to properly ride out his high. This kept him twitching and groaning, overstimulating him slightly. His dick spurted out globs of cum, unfortunately staining his underwear. He was lucky his pants were white, so any stains that would print through weren't too visible.
He stood there for a moment in silence, breathing heavily. A few drops of sweat rolled down his face. Looking at the call time, it had only been a few minutes, yet it was already time to return to work. Luckily, he would manage to go the toilet to clean up at least some of the mess he made. Pulling his hand out of his pants he observed the cum that had stuck on his hand. He really had missed you as well...
"I'll be home early tonight babe. Get yourself ready, bro!"
"Don't worry, I already am! You just keep your promise~"
"Of course babe. See you tonight!"
"See you!"
Hanging up, you chuckled and turned on your back. This had been your goal from the moment you called him, though you weren't quite sure how to make him horny enough to want to come home quickly. But since he missed you as well, it had all worked out splendidly. You couldn't wait for his shift to end~

Portal of fear in the Belgrade Fortress

One of the many portals of Kalemegdan Fortress in Belgrade has been closed and hidden forever. Here is its story. Some say it's true, others say it's fiction, but it dates back more than 500 years.
The fortress dates back centuries, originating in the Roman period. Turkish rulers renovated it, but left certain parts untouched. Interestingly, they constructed double walls around some tunnels, despite their lack of defensive significance. According to legend, the Sultan sent his personal envoy from Istanbul to investigate delays in construction. Workers, despite offers of gold or threats of death, could not be kept on the site. Several workers never exit tunnels. Those who returned, pale with fear, could only mutter "Shaytan" (Devil) in response to their terrifying experiences.
The legend continues into the Second World War. A German Wehrmacht captain, who rediscovered the portal, entered with two soldiers. A few days later, he was found near the Danube River with one soldier, both in a state of panic despite their war experience. The second soldier was never found. They claimed to have escaped by diving into the Danube and swimming towards daylight. According to their account, they were trapped in a different world, where they lost their sense of time. The surroundings were grotesque and inverted, and the beings there caused pain merely by looking at them. It was worse than hell.
The German occupation forces suspected that their men had been captured and drugged by Tito's partisans. The Gestapo investigated the case but reached no conclusion. However, the entrance was sealed with concrete. The Gestapo archive was moved from Belgrade in 1944 and subsequently handed over to Allied forces, who denied possession of the documents and claimed they were returned to Yugoslav authorities.
After the Second World War, the Yugoslav secret police concealed the portal using the fortress's stone materials to keep it hidden from the outside. However, the portal remains there to this day.
Some people believe that this was the main reason why Belgrade never built and dug any metro lines, while other Balkan capital cities did. People say that even the communists of the Yugoslav secret police were afraid of opening the entrance into Hell.
The construction of the Belgrade Metro is set to begin in 2025.
Will evil be unleashed once more?

Northbound Conrail RDC 53 pauses at Katonah, NY, November 1982
Certain midday "off peak" runs were handled by a single Budd Rail Diesel Car (RDC), many of former New York Central heritage. By 1982 the service was operated by Conrail for the MTA, in 1983 the service would be taken over by Metro-North. Notice the conductors are helping a passenger off with their luggage. In another two years this portion of the Harlem Line would be electrified with third rail, the station canopy razed, and a new high-level island platform constructed just north of Jay Street crossing. I can't remember if I asked this already (if so I missed your reply, feel free to just link it if you gave one) but can you tell me more about the Melbourne tunnels? I've found it difficult to find good sources of info that don't make my head hurt and I know you're a Melbourne local with autism
I'm so sorry !! I saw your ask the first time and was like Yup I'll answer that and then forgot. In my DEFENSE I HAVE LIKE 1,100 ASKS RN. Please forgive me. I love you.
OKAY. MUNNEL(s).
The Munnel is a joke term among Melburnian gunzels (=railfans) for the Metro Tunnel, which is a construction project for a new tunnel under the CBD. You can even buy an unofficial mug (official logo for comparison under the mug pic).
You may have seen the map, it looks like this!
Town Hall and State Library station function similarly to, for example, Paris' Gare Montparnasse & Montparnasse Bienvenüe, or London's Victoria station (how you have to walk a little while WITHIN the station to change from the Underground to regional lines etc), or Tokyo's 日比谷Hibiya to 有楽町 Yuurakuchou. That is, they're effectively the same station as Flinders and MelbCent, you just gotta take a five minute walk.
The idea is, as often with these things, to ease pressure. You may know that the Swanston St corridor is the busiest tram corridor in the world (as per usual, the best source on this stuff is Taitset), and it's sometimes quite unpleasant; this is not for lack of service. Trams arrive every half a minute or so. It's just packed, because of students. Melbourne is a University city (college city?), and everyone wants to get to UniMelb (maybe RMIT but I think most RMIT students just train to MelbCent).
And it's even worse on the route 19, because:
The yellow highlight is around about where UniMelb is. If you take the Swanston st corridor trams, you can get on literally any out of 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72, but if your class is on the other side of the uni, it will take you about 10 minutes to get there by foot after that, whereas if you take the 19 (to the left of the yellow highlight) it will take you far less time.
However, because there're eight services on the Swanston St side, compared to only one Route 19, you will be shocked to hear it is not a very pleasant journey if you take the 19. It's always chockers, and the 19 only recently started using E class trams as opposed to only B2s, so it used to be even worse (and not wheelchair accessible until it was fixed). I have, twice, experienced the tram being so full that it literally powered down.
Students on the 19 also have to compete with people going to the hospital or Queen Vic market (Queen Vic marketgoers can take the 57 or 59, and hospitalgoers can take the 59 or even the 58, but most don't realise this and simply hop on the first one that appears on Elizabeth St, which is sometimes the Route 19). Everybody on the Swanston St corridor has to compete with the students.
The only way to fix this is to get rid of the students. Hence, the Munnel!
The Munnel's parkville station is basically just "UniMelb Station". It has faced criticism for being a tunnel just for the students, but that's actually the point; pressure eases so significantly if students are gone that the trams actually become bareable again.
What's also special is that the new route connects to the Sunbury Line (left) and then the E Pakenham/Cranbourne (right). This is the second time a line has been changed to terminate elsewhere other than Flinders St (the other one being Frankston-Werribee), but it will be the first time in Melbournian history that a line will cease to go via Flinders St at all! It's a little bittersweet, actually. Flinders is basically the only iconic thing about Melbourne; if you google Melbourne it's pretty much always what pops up (this is what I gt when I googled with a VPN basing me in Seattle).
Because every single suburban train will go via Flinders on the way there and back, and/or terminate there, it's the busiest suburban railway station in the Southern Hemisphere. I don't know if that's going to change when the Munnel's done, but you can imagine it's confused a few Melburnians for whom the idea of a train not stopping at Flinders is literally incomprehensible.
