i have a probably unpopular take idk but. hm. well. so i def agree with pushback against brands and corporations constantly pushing more and more and more shit on people to buy, obviously, and ultimately i do know that rapid consumerism is at the behest of these companies, joever, whenever there's critique of this- and i think this is important, because public consciousness and pushback and opting out will be the only reasons things like this stop- there needs to be more messaging to people that not everyone needs to be a collector. not everyone needs to buy all of a thing. i always hear this critique, that "now companies are forcing you to buy the new thing" well, they are, but also, theyre not? they force people thru marketing and creating an atmosphere of fomo, but interrogating why people feel like theyre being forced to collect a thing, and not just stating that as a foregone conclusion, imo, is crucial to breaking the spell of fomo. right? like?

like it shouldnt be "companies are forcing people to buy all the new versions of this thing and thats bad and they need to stop doing that" it should be "companies are TRYING to force people to buy all the new versions of this thing via manipulative marketing and thats bad and we need to actively push back against that mindset so they will fail and stop"

i understand this feels nitpicky and like blaming the consumer but they truly will not stop on their own and it is ultimately down to individual choice and if messaging is causing manipulation in a wrong direction then we need proper messaging to combat it, not just accepting that buying a bunch of a new thing is normal for everyone and not just niche hobby collectors

I’m honestly living for the debate going on on Twitter rn that you ought to have at least heard of the Odyssey at some point in your life (like, not even read it or necessarily know the contents, just be aware of one of the foundational texts of human literature on par with things like the Bible, Journey to the west or the story of Troy) and how defensive some people are of their ignorance of it or that they didn’t know about it because knowing the Odyssey is supposedly “American-centric”. Truly the lowest bar experience to justified feelings of smug intellectual superiority like a cosy blanket.

Why don't we have a newspaper from the Hawkins Post in Season 4?

They focus on the Roane Daily Citizen (not legible), the Indianapolis Gazette (Edward), and the Weekly Watcher (Henry)...but not the Hawkins Post? The newspaper that Nancy and Jonathan worked for, who they tried to report the flayed rats to? Death of small-town America? The paper that the main secondary baddies of the Flayed came from? No?

The paper that they feature being thrown to BRENNER in 1979?? NO DICE??

It's not that the paper didn't exist in 1959, since it share a birth year with Henry...1947.

If any paper should have a story on the Creel murders, it should be the official paper of the town the murders happened in. Local papers love this kind of stuff.

For example, the local paper for the town I went to school in reports on shit similar to the Creel murders all the time:

So why don't we see a Hawkins Post article about the Creels? Where is it? The story made it all the way out to Indianapolis, Roane county ran it...but not Hawkins Post?

i'm so giddy honestly. it's not my first time having class (that's basically just show and tell with fun shit from the collections) at the library of congress but it is my first time having my prof be a librarian there and my first time getting to see the staff areas and special collections storage. and we were looking at some of the little mermaid documents the prof had pulled from the ashman papers for us to see and i had asked if they had stuff from god bless you mr rosewater cause i love that show and he said i think so but i'm not sure, which, fair enough it's a big collection in a massive fucking library and it's a fairly obscure show. but then when we were going through the special collections stacks and putting away the items we'd been looking at HE PULLED OUT THE BOX FROM THE ASHMAN PAPERS FULL OF ROSEWATER DOCUMENTS FOR ME TO LOOK AT!!!!!
