I thought I would share with you the first time I used insects In a piece of my artwork. This was for an exhibition I curated with a whole bunch of hand selected awesome local artists. This specific piece I exhibited meant a lot to me at the time and still does. I constructed a whole bunch of these wonky wooden frames that were then literally burnt to pieces with a blowtorch. (My process is literally driven by emotions and as you may imagine, at the time I was in quite the emotional black hole.) I then hung pieces of broken butterflies in them exposed to the elements, hanging them at all different heights. The spotlight worked beautifully on the night as it cast the most amazing shadows, especially as the occasional draft caught the hanging frames and left them slightly swaying. It was beautiful, and it was dark. The scorched wood spoke. The broken butterflies spoke. The shadows spoke. Self Directed project. Splitting, also known as black and white thinking, can often be used as a defence or coping mechanism in people with BPD. It is the inability to see both the good or bad in something, the positive and negative. This state of thinking can be very difficult, in the sense that the subject who may be suffering, may very well know that there is both good and bad, yet at that moment in time their mind is solely focused on either one or the other, and the other cannot, and will not exist in that moment. Essentially this can lead to other negative feelings, and can often, for myself personally, often be the beginning of a downward spiral.
