Seeing Sounds by N.E.R.D. (2008)

There isn't an album title that could be any more apt than Seeing Sounds by N.E.R.D., since they've always struck me as a group that looked and dressed exactly how they sounded. They were able to translate the swagger of their music into their fashion, or their fashion into their music, but whether the egg or the chicken came first, it's indisputable that N.E.R.D. always had a sense of fashion-forwardness. Pharrell Williams alone is a pop culture tastemaker himself, credited for bringing streetwear brands like A Bathing Ape into American hip-hop and namedropping Takashi Murakami in his lyrics way before everyone else fashioned bootleg replicas of his iconic rainbow flower prints.

But by this period of time, in 2008, trucker hats were circling back into snapbacks and the incorporation of rock instrumentation into rap was turning into a schtick people were unanimously leaving in the 2000s. Some say this record is a tad anachronistic, understandably so, with its funk and drum & bass foundation and record scratches that read to me as older than what it actually is. But listening to this record has made me realize that above anything else, N.E.R.D. in itself was a love project, and it was never about being ahead of the game, but having the opportunity to release experimental music for their cult following without worrying about its pop value. After all, why would they worry about riding a wave they started?

Seeing Sounds has infectious energy, groovy melodies, boyish lyrics (both a criticism and a compliment)—a perfect soundtrack for skateboarding. The large gorilla looming over the members on the album art reminded me of the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World where the lead band summons this gigantic yeti figure from their distortion pedal during a music battle (funny string of words, I know). It's roaring, it's loud, and it's chaotic—the type of energy I want to hear more in hip-hop. Again, a perfectly named album; you can quite see the sound. And sure, they were style over substance, but there are plenty of musicians with neither.

You'll notice this isn't much of a review but in defense of the album instead because no matter what the critics say, this has charted #1 on my iPod shuffle.

the rivers overlap

it was a brisk morning. the wind brought with it a chill and cloud cover sky that changed an otherwise perfect day. though it was spring according to the time of year, the weather had yet to get the memo. still, griffin woke with an exploratory passion in their head. they desired nothing more than to explore the city of new york with their close friend cooper, giving him a call soon after waking.

“cooper, be ready to explore the city in 30 minutes. meet me at our spot.” they instructed.

“huh? wait what’s happening?” grumbled cooper. he had just woken himself and had yet to arrive to himself fully. some of his blood was occupied in his southern hemisphere, more quickly rushed there at the sound of his friend’s strict but kind tone.

“our spot. the city. 30 minutes. love you bro.” griffin said quickly as he was searching for the perfectly yassified outfit to explore the city with his bro.

“okay yeah sure” griffin mumbled pulling himself out of bed.

griffin, of course, arrived first. but only by a few seconds. their timing was uncanny. they greeted each with a quick bro kiss, as they always did. there adventures were only as good as the starting kiss, and this was a good one, giving both parties a little chub. maybe one day they’d admit their feelings for each other and become more than bros. maybe today was that day.

their adventure started at a thrift store. the shop had little to offer in means of a yassifiable clothing, but more than made up for it in fun for the two to have. griffin tried on several items to model for cooper, each more revealing than the last. they had hopes of piquing the interest of their friend, or at least peaking his pants. after that seemed to have failed, griffin saw a mannequin. the likeness to cooper was uncanny. “this gives me an idea to be part of our tiktok recap of the adventure.” seconds later cooper was posing on an adjacent table imitating the mannequin and griffin was filming away on his phone, growing more and more fond of their friend.

their adventure next took on an intimate walk through the city to their next destination. they were both enjoying the walk in a way that was anything but platonic, still neither had worked up the courage to admit their feelings to the other. instead they made jokes because they loved to see the other smile. the joke that they decided to film for the tiktok was one of a twink radar. they both knew that the other was the twink for them.

along their walk they passed another thrift store. here, they found some great yassifiable clothes. griffin pointed several things out to cooper, explaining several ways to yassify each one. cooper hung onto every word, each a sweet treat from his desired lover. the feelings soon became too much for cooper, he quickly found something to break the tension.

he held up a grey tank top that boasted the italian flag and the word “italia.” “yassify this one,” cooper challenged with a laugh.

griffin laughed at their little inside joke. they were slightly aroused by the challeging tone of cooper and the intimate nuance of an inside joke. “that’s perfect!” he responded, pulling out his phone. “don’t move!” griffin opened his camera app and filmed a quick clip of his friend holding the tank top to add to the tiktok.

they took another intimate stroll after leaving the shop. this time it took them through one of the city’s parks. they got lost in a deep conversation that neither of the two cared about the chill in the air. they also both thought the other looked so cute with the little patch of red on their nose. the came to a crossing of two rivers in the park. griffin was struck with inspiration for the final clip of their tiktok.

“okay sit there. im going to make a himbo comment about these two rivers and then i’ll walk over to you and we’ll kiss. it’ll drive our fans crazy,” griffin explained with a giggle. they were giddy at the fact that cooper was going along with the plan.

cooper thought the clip idea was one of genius. he also felt overjoyed by the ending. he didn’t give the slightest hint of this though, playing reluctant for the show of it.

“these rivers… overlap,” griffin stated. then they walked over, leaned in, closed their eyes, and kissed cooper. they would end the clip for the tiktok there. “it’ll leave them in suspense,” he’d justify later. though the real reason was something they weren’t ready to share yet.

as griffin pulled away from the kiss, cooper reached up and pulled them back in for a longer, more intimate kiss. this left griffin speechless as they pulled away for a second time, this time ending the video. “there’s two takes for the tiktok, just in case,” cooper explained jokingly. the look of disappointment on griffin’s face must of been obvious because cooper quickly added, “actually griffin-”

before he could finish the sentence, griffin had grabbed him by the cheeks and pulled him up for a kiss that would have gotten them burned at the stakes in the 1600s. it was one of passion, of tension, of release. the two mouths practically became one having shared both saliva and tongues. when the finally parted, griffin simply said “i know, bro. i feel the same.”

the two took each other’s hand and journeyed back to griffins college dorm. there they shared a night of lust for each other’s body and love of each other’s mind. in bed the next morning, their bodies overlapped, just as the river in the park had.

Amazing beaches, cities, animals, people and a large selection of Aussie beer ;)  Some less common Australian destinations are now being promoted in the US, such as Brisbane and Margaret River/Western Australia. What can you say about them? I haven’t personally spent much time in either of those places but Western Australia has some of the best surf in the world [Liam Hemsworth has surfed since age 5] and it’s absolutely stunning. Probably because they think it’s so far away…it’s really not that bad though. Take a night flight from LA and wake up 14hours later and you’re there. Easy! I hear a lot of Americans say they’d love to go but it’s just so far. Gotta have that adventuress spirit!  One issue with Americans visiting Australia is time; many Americans have just two weeks of vacation a year. If you only have a week or ten days, what do you think would be the three or four ‘must-sees, must-dos’ without exhausting yourself on vacation? There are so many beautiful spots throughout Australia. The further north you go the hotter it gets. The Great Barrier Reef would definitely be a cool place to check out. The Gold Coast is amazing. Great surf and warm weather. Central Australia is incredible if you like adventure. And Melbourne and Sydney are both great cities with amazing food and restaurants. Speaking of time, how can Americans make friends with the idea of an all-day flight to Australia? I’m not the biggest fan of flying so I just try to sleep my way through it. Whatever helps you get to sleep the fastest, do that ;) Considering the costs, do you see Australia as a destination for millennial travelers [Hemsworth is 28] like yourself? Cheap flights are always available. You just gotta keep your eye out for it. What are your “travel musts”? Passport. Snacks. Toothbrush.   Only about 40% of Americans have passports; 60% of Australians do. What would you say to those 200 million Americans to motivate them to get a passport so they can visit Australia? Ex-ICE Agent Helps Keep Convicted Felon from Being Deported

When it comes to identifying priorities for deportation, Steven Reneau checks several of the Trump administration’s boxes.

He’s a convicted felon – for importing cocaine, no less.

His immigration status had expired, leaving him no right to be on American soil.

So when ICE agents picked him up outside his Broward County apartment in January, his wife and children had good reason to fear they would never see him again in the United States.

But then an unlikely ally came to the family’s aide – and ICE had second thoughts.

Jack Devaney spent more than 25 years arresting and deporting people for the U.S. government.

When it comes to protecting the borders, Devaney is no bleeding heart.

“I believe in the president’s ‘build a wall’ and deport criminal aliens. I believe in that,” he said.

But he also believes in the government keeping its word to those who risk their lives to help them.

And that’s exactly what Reneau did, Devaney said, after the feds in 1999 intercepted 20 kilos of cocaine from a ship at Port Everglades before it could get to Reneau’s apartment in North Miami Beach.

Instead, Devaney and his partners showed up on Reneau’s doorstep carrying a large quantity of counterfeit cocaine and asking a simple question: Is this yours?

Reneau invited them in and “we talked for about 10, 15 minutes and he agreed to cooperate with us and share with us his part in this drug smuggling conspiracy,” Devaney recalled.

It was a conspiracy reaching back to Reneau’s home county, Belize – a western Caribbean transshipment point for Colombian cocaine – and a drug trafficking organization the DEA alleged was headed by two brothers, Andrew and Floyd Brown, according to court records.

To help prove it, Devaney and crew relied heavily on Reneau, who led them to co-conspirators and recorded conversations the DEA tried to use to have the Browns extradited to the US for prosecution.

“You had conversations with Reneau and the Browns, basically implicating them in that drug smuggling conspiracy,” according to Devaney. (33)

Over six years, he estimated, Reneau helped them locate a Belizean fugitive, convict money launderers and provide enough other intelligence to support dozens of deportations to Belize.

“Technically, we made an agreement for him to work with us,” Devaney said.

But in exchange, the feds agreed to work with Reneau, helping him get a visa for cooperating witnesses, and perhaps a green card – permanent residence in the US – after he did his two years in prison for importing cocaine.

Reneau did his time, but Devaney retired in 2012 without filing the necessary paperwork to protect Reneau from deportation and Reneau’s case lingered.

“This went from agent to agent, assistant US attorney to assistant US attorney,” he said. “I can say it just fell through the cracks.”

Until January, when Reneau’s wife heard a knock on their door.

“I opened the door and I saw Steve standing at the side with three men there. One of them spoke to me he said, ‘We’re from ICE,” she recalled.

As she told NBC 6 Investigators in the days after Reneau was taken to a detention center, she feared the family would never see him again. Their young son would cry and ask, “Where’s Daddy? When is he going to come back?” she said. “I just tell him Daddy’s going to come home soon.”

The family feared Reneau would not survive if returned to Belize, because his role in the cases against the Brown brothers was widely reported there. The DEA’s extradition request was denied after the Belizean supreme court ruled the recordings Reneau made with the Browns were inadmissible.

“I personally believe he’ll be murdered if he’s returned to Belize,” Devaney said.

So when Reneau contacted him in January to say he faced being sent back to Belize, Devaney spring into action, He contacted the acting director of ICE by email, seeking to have the government follow through on what it had promised many years before.

And, much to Devaney’s surprise, acting ICE director Thomas Homan responded to his email, promising to look into it.

A few days later, ICE agents retrieved Reneau from a Monroe Country detention center and drove him back to the same doorstep where his wife last saw him weeks earlier.

He is now able to stay in the US while seeking a visa - the type offered to witnesses in cases like his.

Reneau’s wife said he was told not to discuss his situation publicly, so the family has declined to comment since his release.

But Devaney said he’s happy to so far keep his end of the bargain made with Reneau 18 years ago.

“I guess technically Steven Reneau does not belong in the United States, however, he cooperated with the US government and there was a deal made with Steve.”

To remember and honor the season that was, I (along with a little help from the rest of the SB Nation college football crew) am going to count down the best 100 games of the season. We’ll unveil 30 games at a time on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, then count down the top 10 on Friday.

40. Oct. 21: Oklahoma 42, Kansas State 35

After 41 combined points in the first three quarters of Kansas State’s homecoming battle with Oklahoma, the teams scored 36 in the fourth alone. On three occasions, OU took a touchdown lead, but the Sooners had to time the last one — a 22-yard Rodney Anderson run with seven seconds left — to make sure KSU didn’t have a chance to respond.

39. Sept. 29: Washington State 30, USC 27

USC nearly survived the regular season with national title hopes intact, except for a Friday night trip.

Ronald Jones’ 86-yard run helped the Trojans stake a 17-10 lead, but Washington State took a 27-20 lead on Jamal Morrow’s 23-yard reception in the final period. USC tied, but Morrow’s 35-yarder — WSU’s longest run of the entire season — set up Erik Powell’s field goal.

38. Oct. 28: Nebraska 25, Purdue 24

This was a good season for Purdue, with the Boilermakers rising to a bowl win in a single season under Jeff Brohm.

And this was a bad one for Nebraska, as the Huskers finished with four wins for the first time since 1962, the final year before Bob Devaney showed up to resurrect the program.

On the final Saturday in October, roles reversed. Bad-year Nebraska, facing a 24-12 deficit in the fourth quarter, surged by good-year Purdue.

37. Sept. 3: Virginia Tech 31, West Virginia 24

This was so good that it overcame being played in one of the worst stadiums in a league neither of these teams plays in. Thousands of fans had to skip tailgates or cram them in just before kickoff.

But once they were inside, Appalachian football’s biggest reunion of the season turned out to be a great one. West Virginia’s Will Grier aired the ball out all night, and Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Josh Jackson announced himself. Grier almost threw a touchdown in the final seconds to tie, but Tech held on with a fourth-down stop.

Virginia Tech took a lot of pride in hoisting the rivalry’s Black Diamond Trophy at midfield, with ex-coach Frank Beamer in the celebration at the start of a season that would end with his selection to the College Football Hall of Fame.

But nobody saw it, because they left to try and beat traffic.

36. Sept. 4: Tennessee 42, Georgia Tech 41

This was as functional, effective, and entertaining as Tennessee would be in 2017. The Volunteers gave up 41 points and 655 yards to a team that would limp to 5-6, and the only reason the Vols escaped is because Tech made a bad read on a two-point conversion in OT. This game was the high-water mark.

If you’re a loyal Podcast Ain’t Played Nobody listener (and if you aren’t, why not?), you know that I announced my pet cause as rooting for New Mexico State to reach a bowl and end a 57-year drought.

Then, the Aggies beat Utah State in overtime.

If you watch this and still want to tell me there are too many bowls, then forgive me for the snide words. New Mexico State’s run was the best thing about college football in 2017.

31. Oct. 13: Syracuse 27, Clemson 24 30. Nov. 4: Clemson 38, NC State 31

On Oct. 13, Dabo Swinney’s retooled squad headed to upstate New York with a banged-up quarterback. Kelly Bryant struggled, then got hurt again in the second quarter; backup Zerrick Cooper did no better.

Syracuse dictated the terms, but Tanner Muse’s 63-yard fumble return kept the champs close, and Travis Etienne’s 52-yard run tied the game heading into the fourth quarter. Syracuse’s Eric Dungey (278 yards, three touchdowns) engineered a final field goal drive. Storm the field.

Three weeks later, NC State led at halftime in Raleigh, until the Tigers seemed to put the game away with a 21-7 run keyed by Tavien Feaster’s 89-yard score. But State cut the lead to 38-31 with under two minutes left and forced a three-and-out.

Ryan Finley completed three passes to work the ball inside the Tiger 30, then hit this fourth-down pass.

Only ... that’s an illegal shift at the bottom. On a fourth-down do-over, Clemson ended the game with a pick.

29. Nov. 25: SMU 41, Tulane 38

Literally as close to bowl eligibility as possible.

28. Oct. 28: Northwestern 39, Michigan State 31

Northwestern won three consecutive overtime games on its way to an eight-game winning streak. It took three OT periods for the Wildcats to put away a Michigan State ranked 16th at the time. It also took a play in which State’s Brian Lewerke both fumbled and threw an interception.

27. Dec. 28: TCU 39, Stanford 37 26. Dec. 29: Wake Forest 55, Texas A&M 52

Alamo Bowl Second Half TCU is one of the greatest teams ever. Two years after completing a 31-point Alamo comeback against Oregon (the second-best game of 2015), the Horned Frogs turned a 12-point deficit into a win against Stanford. Jalen Reagor’s 93-yard catch and run made it 31-29, then Desmon White’s 76-yard punt return gave the Frogs the lead. Stanford went ahead again, but Cole Bunce’s 33-yard field goal sealed the deal. And there’s always a shirt change involved when TCU’s unleashing a comeback.

The next day in Charlotte, Wake and A&M had a track meet. Despite a 31-0 mid-game run, Wake trailed in the fourth. But the final two drives of quarterback John Wolford’s career were touchdowns. The Demon Deacons needed both. After A&M responded, the Deacs went 69 yards and won on Matt Colburn’s short score.

25. Oct. 7: Miami 24, Florida State 20

Six seconds left, seven-game Florida State winning streak against Miami on the line, Malik Rosier to Darrell Langham.

24. Oct. 7: Navy 48, Air Force 45

Nuts from the get-go.

Navy scored on runs of 91 and 75 yards.

Air Force scored on passes of 51 and 59.

Navy went up 28-7, then Air Force scored four touchdowns in 18 minutes to take a 45-41 lead with under two minutes left.

Too much time on the clock.

23. Nov. 11: Alabama 31, Mississippi State 24

Alabama nearly fell victim to the SEC’s Bulldogs, blowing a chance to finish a comeback with a field goal but scoring a huge touchdown by little-used freshman DeVonta Smith.

I’m not talking about the national title game. I’m talking about two months earlier in Starkville.

Mississippi State played brilliant ball control, held Bama to 56 snaps, and led most of the way. But the Tide tied in the fourth and survived when, on that 56th snap, Jalen Hurts hit Smith for a 26-yard catch and run. MSU couldn’t complete a Hail Mary.

Smith had seven catches all year. Two were game-winners.

22. Oct. 14: Boston College 45, Louisville 42

Between mid-November 2014 and mid-October 2017, Boston College scored more than 30 on an FBS opponent just twice. Over the final six games of the 2017 regular season, the Eagles did it five times. And their hot streak began with a perfect foil: Lamar Jackson.

Louisville led 21-7 in the first half, and BC had punted on four of its first six possessions. But freshman AJ Dillon scored with 51 seconds left in the second quarter, then twice in the second half. His 75-yard run gave BC a stunning 42-28 lead with 12 minutes left, but Jackson’s 41-yard score tied the game back up.

The Cardinals were driving with under two left when Kamrin Moore recovered a fumble. Seven Dillon rushes — he had 39 for 272 yards — set up a kick at the buzzer.

21. Oct. 7: Michigan State 14, Michigan 10 20. Nov. 4: Michigan State 27, Penn State 24

TCU in the second half of an Alamo Bowl. Michael Jordan with a dubious illness. Lil Wayne in the late aughts. Mark Dantonio in disgusting weather.

Knowing of the MSU coach’s powers made the Michigan game ominous. The Wolverines surely knew they’d need a comfortable lead — in this series: roughly five points — before the forecasted rain arrived. But the Spartans gained a 14-3 lead and docked the tugboat, then pointed and laughed as Michigan kept passing in a downpour.

One month later, the Nittany Lions were doomed once lightning forced a delay. Their fate dimmed as the delay reached three hours, with players sustained by emergency pizza and Chick-fil-A. Seven hours after the first kick, Matt Coghlin hit the last one and splashed across wet turf.

19. Dec. 9: Army 14, Navy 13

In 2016, Army broke Navy’s 14-game winning streak in the series, but this season was Jeff Monken’s true proof of concept win over the Midshipmen. Navy wasn’t down to a third string QB this time, and for the first time in decades (literally, decades!) the two service academies looked like equals.

18. Nov. 4: Oklahoma 62, Oklahoma State 52 17. Nov. 18: Kansas State 45, Oklahoma State 40

The two most exhausting shootouts in Big 12 play took place in Stillwater.

First, you had the most bedlam of all Bedlam matchups. After only one of the first four possessions resulted in points, OU and OSU scored on 11 of the next 12. At halftime, the teams had combined for 76 points and 645 yards.

Marquise Brown’s 77-yard TD made it 55-45 OU, but OSU drove 75 yards to cut the lead again. When Chad Whitener picked off a Baker Mayfield pass in the end zone with three minutes left, OSU had a chance to steal it. But a fourth-and-8 pass from the OU 38 fell incomplete, and Trey Sermon’s 53-yard run put the game away.

Two weeks later, OSU still had its sights on a major bowl when 5-5 Kansas State came to town. The Cowboys led 10-7 when Byron Pringle struck. He had four scores of 47 or more yards, all on seven touches. And with 20 minutes left, KSU had a 45-20 lead.

It almost wasn’t enough. Three OSU touchdowns in five minutes made it 45-40 with four minutes left, and after a KSU three-and-out, the Pokes had the ball with a chance to win.

16. Sept. 9: Georgia 20, Notre Dame 19

Jake Fromm’s first start began what nearly became a national title run. The Dawgs relied on their defense, and it worked, in part because of a late Rodrigo Blankenship field goal and this absurd Terry Godwin catch on a third-and-goal.

15. Nov. 11: Boise State 59, Colorado State 52

After a 2-2 start that featured a confusing blowout loss to Virginia, Boise State caught fire. The Broncos would win nine of 10, but their mid-November trip to Fort Collins nearly went awry. It typically does when you spot a talented home team a 28-3 advantage.

The Broncos needed all 60 minutes to cut Colorado State’s lead to zero. Alex Mattison’s 70-yard run made it 35-24 early in the third, and Sean Modster’s 13-yard reception made it 52-45 with 1:41 remaining. Star receiver Cedrick Wilson recovered an onside kick, and five plays later, the game was tied.

In OT, Mattison gave Boise the advantage, but CSU was in position until Leighton Vander Esch forced a fumble at the Boise 5. Comeback complete.

14. Oct. 7: WMU 71, Buffalo 68

At some point, you go from wishing a game would end to praying it never does. You’d have to ask the 17,048 in attendance at UB Stadium where that line was, but I’m guessing it was somewhere around the fourth overtime.

It looked as if this would be a routine road win for the defending MAC champion. But Buffalo caught back up, and a field goal with 34 seconds left sent the game to OT. And OT, and OT, and OT, and OT, and OT, and OT.

The teams traded TDs in each of the first two overtime periods, then went scoreless in the third. Each scored touchdowns with two-point conversions in the fourth, then each missed NCAA-mandated two-pointers in the fifth and sixth. When Buffalo settled for a field goal in OT No. 7, it opened the door, and Franklin ran through it.

The funniest part: It was over in four hours and 31 minutes, only 15 minutes longer than Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, which didn’t go to OT.

13. Dec. 23: USF 38, Texas Tech 34

Eleven seconds left in the Birmingham Bowl, and USF has trailed for most of the game. Quinton Flowers’ last pass:

How good is Army? SDSU, one of the most talented G5 programs in the nation, finished with 10 wins, two wins over Pac-12 teams, a No. 34 ranking in overall S&P+, and losses to only the Mountain West’s division champs and ... Army.

You almost certainly didn’t see this game because it was crammed into a holiday afternoon, but after SDSU’s great Rashaad Penny scored his fourth touchdown to give the Aztecs a 35-28 lead with under six minutes, the Black Knights drove 72 yards like a wood chipper welded to a go cart.

Emotional wins over other services academies are comfort food, but this was different. Army beat a really good team, full stop.

11. Dec. 2: UCF 62, Memphis 55

In September, UCF crushed Memphis, 40-13. That was the third of seven straight double-digit wins to start the Knights’ season.

By the end, Memphis was ready for a rematch. The Tigers won seven in a row to win the AAC West and a conference title shot in Orlando.

UCF built a 17-7 lead, but Memphis responded, going on a 24-7 run. It was 34-31, Memphis, when UCF went on a 17-0 run. But the Tigers again responded, tying with 4:13 left and picking off McKenzie Milton at the end of regulation.

Memphis kicked off OT with a 15-yard strike from Riley Ferguson to star Anthony Miller. UCF responded, then scored first in OT No. 2. After a huge fourth-and-7 catch by Miller, Tre Neal picked off Ferguson at the UCF 4 to clinch a New Year’s bid.

Round Rock’s Justin Espinosa clenched his third, consecutive amateur 9-ball division title on the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour, defeating Hiro Nakahara in the second set of the true, double elimination final, 5-0. Espinosa now joins an elite list of fellow tour players whose game has drastically improved on tour, and have graduated to the tour’s prominent “Open Division Player List”. In the open 9-ball division, an undefeated Manny Chau racked up his second win of the year, overcoming Chase Rudder in the final set, 7-2.

On June 10th-11th, 2017, Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas,  along with tour title sponsor Poison by Predator Cues PoisonBilliards.com, and sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls facebook@CyclopPoolBalls,  Ozone Billiards OzoneBilliards.com, APA of North Harris County facebook@APANorthHarrisCounty,  OutsvilleBilliards.com, and Jimmy Jenkins Realty , facilitated another successful  event for Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour players. The tour would like to thank room owners David and Shannon Richardson, and their entire staff, for hosting another first-rate event.

In the 41-player, amateur 9-ball division, Justin Espinosa made his way to the final four winners’ side with wins over Tom Rehm, 5-1, Cody Smoke, 5-1, Robbie Salinas, 5-0, and Steve Williams, 5-2, while Jeff Chauncey ousted Will Felder, 5-3, Bill Fuller, 5-2, and Bob “Pittsburgh Flash” Guzik. Doug Gray ousted Gerald Holland, 5-4, Sonny Bosshamer, 5-2, and Robert Cooper, 5-0, while Hiro Nakahara overcame Dave DeVaney, Johnny Cope, 5-0, Robyn Haak, 5-0, and Jim McCary, 5-4.  After losing  his second round match to Bosshamer, 5-3, Pete Charles came back to win eight matches on the one loss side, including wins over Kevin Johnson, 5-4, Holland, 5-3, Joe Fagan, 5-3, Salinas, 5-0, and Robert Cooper.  Bill Fuller terminated Vic Sorto, 5-0, and Richard Hernandez, 5-3, before falling to Jim McCary, 5-3. In similar fashion, Felder sent home Brian Rosenbaum, 5-1, newcomer Red Hutch, 5-0, and Chris Ramoz, 5-3, only to be stopped short by Guzik, 5-3. Bosshamer made his play, ending DeVaney, Chris Rocha, 5-0, and Steve Williams, rounding out the final four on the one loss side. Winners’ side action witnessed Gray fall to Nakahara, 5-1, and Espinosa surge past Chauncey, 5-3. Espinosa was on a roll, and went on to secure the hot seat over Nakahara, 5-1. Back on the west side, it was Guzik over Bosshamer, 5-3, and Charles over McCary, 5-1. Following his seventh win, Charles slid by Guzik, 5-4, but fell to Nakahara, 5-3. This turn of events pitted a rematch for Nakahara, whose only hope to win this event, was to beat Espinosa two sets. Hungry for his first tour win, Nakahara overwhelmed Espinosa the first set, 5-1. Espinosa collected himself, bearing down and winning the second set, 5-0. Congratulations to Justin Espinosa on his third, amateur division title.

In the 39-player, open 9-ball division, Manny Chau began his trek with wins over Kevin Johnson, 7-6, Robyn Haak, 7-2, and Brian Rosenbaum, 7-2, while Waco’s Doug Young bested Robbie Salinas, 7-2, Hiro Nakahara, 7-2, and Jim McCary, 7-5. Chase Rudder defeated Paul Alderete, 7-3, Bill Fuller, 7-1, Justin Espinosa, 7-2, and Joey Torres, 7-3, while Sonny Bosshamer took care of Adam Gomez, 7-3, Jamie Polk, 7-5, and Richard Hernandez. Following a 7-2 upset at the hands of Hernandez, Ernesto Bayaua took charge, eliminating Chris Ramoz, 7-1, Tom Rehm, and Jim McCary, 7-4. Other one loss side action witnessed Espinosa take out Cody Smoke, 7-2, David Chow, 7-0, and Brian Rosenbaum, 7-1. Nakahara was on the comeback trail, blazing through Mike Robles, 7-2, Will Felder, and Hernandez. Guzik made his bid for the final four on the one loss side, logging wins over Fuller, 7-6, Haak, and Richie Richeson, 7-3, until he was halted by Torres, 7-2. Back on the east side, Rudder overcame Bosshamer, 7-5, and Chau made quick work of Young, 7-2. Thirsty for his second tour victory of the year and anxious to regain his number one ranking, Chau overcame Rudder for the hot seat, 7-5. Back on the west side, Espinosa took out Bayaua, 7-0, and Bosshamer, 7-0. Torres tamed Nakahara, 7-6, but fell to Young, 7-6. Young went on to defeat Espinosa, 7-5, only to be put out of commission by Rudder, 7-2. It was a hot seat rematch for the two, heavy hitters. Rudder, vying for his first title of the season, faced off with Chau, who was anxious to repossess his place in the rankings. Chau was focused, and his determination bled through to the table. Rudder was controlled and concise, but couldn’t keep up. Chau closed out the first set, 7-2, taking home his second victory, and enough points to regain his throne in the open division rankings.

Serving pool players, pool rooms, and sponsors since 2009, the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour celebrates its 10th Anniversary in 2018 as the longest-running billiards tour in the south. A special 10th Anniversary Event will be held for players who compete in at least two events between now, and January 1st, 2018. Probably because they think it’s so far away…it’s really not that bad though. Take a night flight from LA and wake up 14hours later and you’re there. Easy! I hear a lot of Americans say they’d love to go but it’s just so far. Gotta have that adventuress spirit!  One issue with Americans visiting Australia is time; many Americans have just two weeks of vacation a year. If you only have a week or ten days, what do you think would be the three or four ‘must-sees, must-dos’ without exhausting yourself on vacation? There are so many beautiful spots throughout Australia. The further north you go the hotter it gets. The Great Barrier Reef would definitely be a cool place to check out. The Gold Coast is amazing. Great surf and warm weather. Central Australia is incredible if you like adventure. And Melbourne and Sydney are both great cities with amazing food and restaurants. Speaking of time, how can Americans make friends with the idea of an all-day flight to Australia? I’m not the biggest fan of flying so I just try to sleep my way through it. Whatever helps you get to sleep the fastest, do that ;) Considering the costs, do you see Australia as a destination for millennial travelers [Hemsworth is 28] like yourself? Cheap flights are always available. You just gotta keep your eye out for it. What are your “travel musts”? Passport. Snacks. Toothbrush.   Only about 40% of Americans have passports; 60% of Australians do. What would you say to those 200 million Americans to motivate them to get a passport so they can visit Australia? Get up and see the world!!! Expand your mind! Thank me later.   What’s the one thing you wish Americans knew about Australia—but don’t?
