Y'know, I think I figured out why the Hells still feel like a new low-level party to me, even though they're level 13 and almost 100 episodes in.
I don't quite think it's the lack of conversations, or the fact half the party's plot hooks are big ties to past campaigns - though that definitely plays a part.
... Bell's Hells still primarily rely on quest givers.
Most of their goals are given to them and do not feel organic to the party, and constantly remind us that the Hells are pretty much never the most powerful people in the room. Which is usually something you see with a low-level party.
NPCs offering jobs is not a bad thing; it's a very common plot hook. Matt has been extremely skilled with using NPC quest givers in those two campaigns. Not only do they provide an obvious plot thread, but they can put the party in the path of others (say, the Nein running into the Iron Shepherds while doing a job for the Gentleman and everything that came of that). And the Hells had a solid start with it too - Eshteross was an excellent quest giver!
The problem is that Bell's Hells have never really not had a quest giver.
Maybe it's a byproduct of the more plot-heavy structure of this campaign? But while prior parties have felt like they decided on their course of action and what they prioritized, Bell's Hells feels less like level 13 (13! Level 13!) experienced adventurers and more like an MMO group clicking on the exclamation point over an NPC's head. Where does the plot demand we go next? Who do we report back to?
They're level 13.
At level 13, Vox Machina had just defeated a necromantic city-state to clear their name and Percy's conscience. And, you know, the Conclave just destroyed Emon. No one was explicitly telling the group to gather Vestiges and save the world (though Matt guided them there), and they were usually among the most powerful people in the room. They chose which Vestiges to prioritize, which dragons to tackle when, even if the over-all plot was pretty clear.
At level 13, the Mighty Nein were celebrating Traveler Con (another PC goal, I'll note) after brokering peace between two nations, accidentally becoming pirates and heroes of the Dynasty. The Nein regularly chose what to do based on personal goals, not grand ones. Though definitely smaller fish than Vox Machina at this level, they were very independent and gaining solid political clout.
While we're at it: level 13 is one level lower than the Ring of Brass, who had a huge amount of sway over Avalir. They ended the world, and also saved it, while in the grand scheme of things being only a smidge more powerful than Bell's Hells are now.
Can you really see the Hells wielding that amount of influence, when they're constantly being told what to do next?
The god-eater might be unleashed, so Bell's Hells have no time to do anything but what is asked of them. No time for therapy unless stolen from Feywild time, no travel on foot and late-night watches. They haven't even had time to grieve FCG. Percy was grieved in the middle of the Conclave arc. Molly was grieved when half the party was still in irons.
Matt is in the very unfortunate spot of not being able to give the Hells the same agency as the other two parties. Not only because of the world-ending plot introduced so early on; they are surrounded by characters they know (and the cast knows) are stronger and wiser than them - the familiarity of the past PCs and NPCs is to their disadvantage.
Why would the party reasonably ignore Keyleth's task that will help save the world and go off on a romp? Why would the cast when they know well Keyleth has to be sensible and with the best intentions in mind? The stakes are just too high.
It means that the Hells still feel like they're running errands instead of pursuing their own destiny. Their accomplishments are diminished as just being parts of a to-do list, and any stakes feel padded by several level 20 PCs/NPCs standing 5 steps away ready to catch them.
This isn't Bell's Hell's fault, nor is it Matt's. It could be amended, I think, if the Hells are really left to their own devices for a long period of time without support and shortcuts (like during the party split)... which would be really tricky to pull off at this point in the campaign.
They're level 13. They're big fish, but they're stuck in a pond full of friendly sharks, so they don't feel big at all.
#critical role#campaign 3#bells hells#cr meta#critical role meta#the percy's conscience thing is half a joke. i love him but man he rlly went there just for the Vengeance. this isnt about him tho#to quote burr: we rlly spent the entire campaign on imogen and orym's backstories and everything else is sidequests#it's just. god. the constant hand-holding paired w the fact there's no TENSION from the fact they're taking the orders#the Nein were allergic to quest givers partially bc they rightfully didn't trust them. But the cast and audience trusts Keyleth and co 100%#it feels like you could put any other characters in this group and Of Course they'd still do roughly the same things on a macro scale#i love Orym and Liam's intent behind the character. but i. think it all boils down to his strong connection w Keyleth ;;#because of Course he'd reach out when things got bad. and of Course they would turn to her for advice.#the other three parties mentioned could Say Things and they would get Done. kinda iffy for the Nein but they could still boss ppl around#who can the Hells delegate smaller tasks to? ask to spy for them? deal with arcane batteries? no one! Because they ARE the small guys!

if your au Branch meet canon Branch how would it go

I didn't know which au Branch you meant since I have about 3 so I added 2 of them XD (normal explorer au Branch not seen here as he had better things to do.)
N2 Au Branch is classic, and tag along branch is more visually distinct from the others.
I think their initial meeting would be tense, post trolls 1 Branch is more mellow but he is quick to fight when he needs to, N2 au Branch is currently in movie 1 grey state tho he has a slightly more calm attitude than before he's still not a welcoming person, and then there tag along Branch who is a lot more positive and expressive than both of them.
I might expand more on this at some point but hope you enjoy what I've got for now!
#dreamworks trolls#trolls#trolls au#n2 au#n2 explorer au#branch tag along au#trolls band together#trolls world tour#canon branch is just movie branch so he wouldnt know jade or lief#tho in my mind if jade and lief were to exist in the movies theyd be putt putt trolls!!#their beginning would be the same but JD wouldnt have any contact with them post break up#and they wouldnt make it out of the tunnels since JD wasnt there to help them#thus they end up being rescued by viva and co#and taken to hole n fun instead!!!#thats if they did exist withiin movie canon#but they dont!#so branch is like 'whi these guys are?'

Stalking John Watsons twitter and saw this and wanted to share for the people who have not seen this

HE DID THE THING!!
One of my favorite things about the original ACD Sherlock Holmes books is how much attention to detail Watson puts into everything, but ESPECIALLY with Holmes, literally on the first few days of living with Holmes, Watson was so intrigued by his flatmate to the point he wrote down everything he learned from about him. Until of course throwing it into a fire and disregarding it because he felt it was useless and still did not understand him. But still, these smalls things are usually glossed over by other medias, and although it was not mentioned in the podcast, it makes sense for him to say something about it on twitter.
The fact they wrote almost word for word what he writes in the book. I can die happy now.
This is how its written in the Original Work 👇

Cannot believe some of you are NOW realizing Watson is the cutest and most awkward man to ever walk the face of the earth ! Love him and his curiosity
#watson is just that kind of guy#is it gay to write down everything i learned about my same sex flatmate?#short answer yes#long answer would have provided an extent of BBC Watson and his internalized homophobia#sherlock & co#john watson#sherlock holmes#possibly johnlock

Imagine looking at a character whose entire premise is that in every stage of his life, he's made every version of himself into someone that inspires people to such a degree that EVERY SINGLE VERSION OF HIM has people wanting to literally follow in his footsteps in some way or another.....
And coming to the conclusion that like.....the most important things about him are the sum of all his trappings. His entirely homemade developed from scratch could not exist if not for what he already was and brought with him BEFORE crafting this newest version of himself trappings, with his greatest trait throughout all of it being his adaptability; his ability and willingness to roll with the punches and not try to simply weather any opposition or changes to his life but instead reshape himself as needed to better fit INTO whatever new shape his life and the world around him takes. All while managing to carry the most innate, fundamental and necessary aspects of himself from one version to the next. Thus every single version of himself is different but simultaneously every single version of himself is also undeniably the same person.
The strength of this character, to me, will always be that he can be so many versions of himself, he can become so many things, all without ever actually losing or discarding any of the aspects of himself he considers most essential, the things he's not willing to lose or give up just to keep going. Finding that road not taken by most, usually because most never even think to look for it as an option. But one that he's always able to find because the one trick he's mastered in his tumultuous life is threading that needle of not just digging in his heels in an unproductive way but rather being selective about when and where he makes a stand and decides "this is not a thing I'm willing to compromise about" but here are places and ways I can and will change and evolve and adapt in order to make it possible for me to hold onto these parts and keep them as they are.
And that's why its always so mind-boggling to me that so many writers can't seem to think of anything else to do with Dick Grayson other than invent some new reason for him to just....not be that person, or to like just take the character whose most basic fundamental trait he's NOT about to compromise on is willingly giving up his spot in the driver's seat of his own life.....and make him just a passenger in his own life and stories.
Dick Grayson at age nine....at age nineteen...at age twenty nine....the one core thread running through all versions of him is the only way he's standing back and letting you call the shots for him or putting him on the sidelines in some way is over his dead body.
HOW he goes about that, what that looks like, who he becomes and what aspects of himself he plays up at some times and what traits he lets fall by the wayside at other times when they offer less in service to his primary goal here....that changes constantly. He changes constantly.
But those changes are almost always (or at least they used to be/should be IN MY OPINION) made with the intention of keeping certain things about him or his life as consistent as possible.
That's the duality of Dick Grayson that I'm here for. The inherent contradiction of him that COULD allow for endless conflict and breaking new narrative ground in all sorts of ways if mined properly:
His eternal willingness to compromise....but only ever in pursuit of doubling down on the ways he's not willing to compromise.
Forever walking that tightrope in ways that only a kid born and raised in a circus could ever hope to.
#see also: my grinding teeth when people disparage his circus origins#like the only thing its good for is colorful backstory and explaining his acrobatics#THERES. SO. MUCH. THERE.#theres so much EVERYWHERE in every aspect of his backstory and his preexisting comics and yet over and over we get#....what if we just ignored all that and did what the fuck ever as though this character has nothing integral to him or fundamental to say#to be fair my gripes with Taylor are not exactly interchangeable with my gripes with the previous runs#but I lump him in as an extension of them because while evocative of different SIDES of my ennui with these takes on Dick.....#the thing about Taylor's stuff to me (or the parts I read at least) is that its generic as hell while only retaining superficial elements#of Dick's character and stories in order to point to them and say see these are definitely about Dick Grayson. like....only in very surface#level ways. underneath that theyre basically generic superhero adventures that could easily be retooled to be about a pretty sizable number#of other characters. tbh with the whole alfred inheritance thing it honestly felt from the get go#that Taylor was more interested in writing a kinder gentler Batman like a Bruce from one of the animated shows like#The Brave and the Bold who gets along better with everyone else. even the way the Brave and the Bold largely exists to use Batman's#popularity as a star vehicle to platform his co-superhero for the episode lends itself to Taylor's approach in his NW run#with the central figure - only nominally DG imo - basically existing as a platform allowing for the drafting of any other character he want#to write in any given arc or story in a similar way to how Bruce is utilized in Brave and the Bold#anyway. idk idk. my issues with Taylor are not the same as the others exactly but also they are and also I just plain dont like the guy#so I complain about him at any given opportunity even when its not technically as accurate or relevant as it possibly could be#I Am Flawed. its fine though dont worry about it. its called being nuanced

Never getting over Fulcrum being a project manager...
Idk why, but something about that is so funny to me. Not just because the title of "project manager" is inherently kinda funny for a Decepticon, but also because-
1. It's vague sounding and hard to explain irl because it technically exists in multiple fields, like healthcare or manufacturing, which surely translates into canon in some way.
2. In canon, it's simultaneously a really mundane, innocuous sounding job, yet it's also a super morally awful position to reside over depending on the context. (*cough* forced colonization and cyberforming *cough*)
And 3. It solidifies the fact that behind all the surface level militaristic work we get with both the Decepticons and Autobots, there's also Cons and Bots with "normal" jobs in both factions.
Like, sure yeah we get scientists and doctors, engineers and programmers, but usually in big important or warfront positions. (For plot reasons, understandably.) But it's also really funny and interesting to think of those that worked background positions, or minor jobs.
Like an Autobot working in their equivalent of an HR department, or a Decepticon who runs one of their outpost's or starship's kitchens.
Just all the pre-war jobs that didn't just disappear with the war, but instead evolved to exist within the factions.
It's particularly funny with the Decepticons though, because it could be a super mundane job or situation, but because it's them, it has to have an air of ~e v i l~ to it, either legitimately and/or merely for the vibes, like Tarn's "performance reviews".
#theres this one comedy thing. a think its from that like. puppet comedian dude??? cant remember the name rn-#-buts theres a bit about a person in the crowd being a project manager and how silly the job sounds#at some point the person the project manager is with gets pointed out when the comedian asks smth along the lines of-#-''is he a project you're managing? he looks pretty managed to me.'' smth smth. thats fulcrum and the scavs to me#idw fulcrum#fulcrum#mtmte#tf idw#idw tarn#tarn#transformers#maccadam#Decepticons being cartoonishly evil while doing mundane shit will never not be funny to me#'i need to send an evil email to my evil boss about an evil supply chain issue involving my evil workers evil rations and evil mail'#<- fulcrum#sorry. yes he is a tragic yet simultaneously silly guy. but i will never not shut up about his stupid awful job#''he's a project manager!'' oh yay :D! ''he's overseeing the destruction and forced cyberformation of a whole planet'' ...what#not saying he deserved being turned into a bomb. but i think a solid uhh maybe 1000+ organics get a free chance to spit on him or smth#get his ass lmao. i swear hes one of my favs. its just he is objectively an asshole. and i must speak on it bcs i love him#sort of unrelated. but along the same vein of jobs and positions in the Decepticons. ive been trying to puzzle out Krok and Fulcrum's ranks#and. it might not be accurate. idk what sort of ranking system bullshit is going on in canon. so im going off what i know#but. im figuring krok was some sort of warrant-esque officer? aka. he was a general solider. who worked his way up through skill to NCO-#-then specialized in strategy to the point of becoming a warrant officer for strategy and studies. so. higher than NCO but lower than CO#so on the other hand. fulcrum is a CO. bcs he wasnt a solider. he was a technician. but also in advanced management. so. CO???#for irl comparison. NCO/Warrant = worked towards over time from low ranks. CO = fast tracked bcs of formal education or smth#(take the irl comparison with a grain of salt. im not an expert on that shit. i just considered becoming a CO bcs of pressure once)#((CO in this context stands for commissioned officer. not commanding officer btw. so. its like management shit))#(not that i think cons have commissions or anything. just using the terminology as a place holder or smth ig)#who outranks who is debatable bcs canon doesn't specify rank. but if going off this as a basis. fulc would outrank krok by a technicality#but. assumedly. battle experience is seen as more impressive and noteworthy to cons. so its more likely krok outranked fulc bcs of that

Lovely similarities between Lockwood & Co and Dead Boy Detectives because these shows are taking over my life
The opening scene. We see two main characters fight an angry ghost, it goes a little wrong in both cases and the context is only explained at a later point. I think the pacing is also similar
Sassy ghosts. There would be a lot more arson involved in DBD if Edwin and the Skull were near each other and Charles and Lucy would have to deal with it
Super satisfying cinematography. Especially when it comes to portraying the supernatural. Notable: the camera angles in Combe Carey Hall and the depiction of Hell
"I'm not in love with them I would just give my (after-)life for them and devote most of my energy on their well-being"
Netflix :|
#i'm totally normal about this#i swear#i could write an essay on the cinematography in these shows i love it so much#quill kipps and edwin meeting when#silly boys with silly glasses#weirdly i (a person who neither reads nor writes fanfic) have so many fic ideas rn#like l&co and the boys ending up on the same case#lockwood & co#lockwood and co#anthony lockwood#lucy carlyle#dead boy detectives#dbda#netflix#edwin payne#charles rowland#quill kipps#we're keeping dbda trending with this one guys i swear#i'm losing my sanity :)

alright it's been a while since I've watched the Of Heart and Harvest oneshot, but I have SEVERAL questions
Why did Shepherd name his guns Couleuvre and Flambeau, the Serpent and the Torch? Was he even the one who named them?
In synonymous terms they are the snake and the light/fire...made me think of Sarnax, but presumably Shepherd had these weapons before meeting Sarnax. Besides that, i don't remember Nax having the Lantern or mentioning Gherix a single time; he's a druid this time around, not a cleric. It's very possible, if not likely, that Sarnax still worshipped Gherix, but then we circle back to point a., unless they met before Shepherd had his guns?
Does this Shepherd worship Gherix? Is that what the names are referring to? Or is it possible that they both refer to the devil (per the biblical myth), referencing Shepherd's own devilish heritage and status as a sinner?
#i gotta rewatch that oneshot now that I've seen some of CoS#i also wanna point out the ohah shep attributes his pistols to the grinning sinner which i assume is the same grinning sinner from tcm#which...certainly has some implications...#i need to gnaw on him like rubber#need to shake andy too for that matter...him and his tortured lil guys....#makes me insane#snek speaks#legends of avantris#silas shepherd morgan#oh heart and harvest#of heart and harvest oneshot

I miiiight color this properly but have a funky soul design i did for fun :}
[close up + a small text about the guy below and then some]
While it is mainly just for fun & not my main design for Soul, i think Soul's form would change throughout Cacophony a fair amount. There's still some things it cant change but depending on its view on himself, Heart & Mind, or Whole would alter how his apperance looks. Not necessarily a bad thing either, just a form on how he feels or views himself. Kinda like when you make a persona i guess? He just swaps a lot between them.
Also smaller thing being that it's "tail" can change as well! More obvious being the relation to the instrumental album cover but also it can changed into other things as well. An Umbrella for Spring and a Storm, a gavel for parts of Mucka Blucka, TSE & The Bidding, or it being one of those bid cards youd hold up to bid your amount [also during The Bidding]. Can also change to the trident during TSE & The Bidding too, the red guitar in Two Wuv as well. Just generally whatever he want/feels like!
#i like the idea that soul swaps between forms#just cos#i mean theres other reasons but yk#He can look like the art or the most Normal Guy™#also also also#love the idea of putting in like a void or blank or something to show his heart & mind are out#being Whole minus the heart & mind so the spots where theyd physically be is just Nothing#Maybe it go away toward the end of We're Gonna Win & Two Wuv since he feels more himself then/his own part? [not that hes IN wgw but yk]#he feels it ig. being whole. closer to being whole at least#Same for the split grey thing too!!!#random but ik its likely cos CJ had the idea after TSE but Soul has that physical color split by the end is TSE to most of Light#something something heart & mind metaphor#you can even see that split go away in Light at the end :} during the “sum of my parts” line iirc#okay okay i shush now#its 3am & cj might release a song at 6am soooo i gotta sleep soon cos i got work also...#anyway. i love soul & i like stuff that changes over the album#chonny jash#chonnys charming chaos compendium#cj soul#-atlas art-#also also also also#soul/whole & ouroboros visual designs my beloved

Why didn’t Vil’s mom start regaining hope after Vil was born if that’s typical? Was there something else going on?
An angel griefs and loses hope when someone close to them passes away, Miss Schoenheit had that close person pass away suddenly. She knew her friend longer before meeting Eric, they were the first person she developed an attachment to, and like any angel would, she promised to protect her loved ones from anything.
So like yeah that didn't go well and her friend ended up passing away quite tragically, and the incident quickly made Miss Schoenheit grief, lose hope, and develop the disease that'd kill her eventually. The reason Vil didn't end up being her reason to keep hope is because she completely lost her sense to think she could protect them and Eric. If she couldn't protect one person, what makes her think she could protect her husband and son? Or a whole group, since as a high ranking angel she has angels below her that look up to her and believe she can keep them safe. It was a lot of pressure on her. (Not to mention, she wasn't able to tell another high ranked angel what happened because if she did, she would've been told to "drop it" because she has more important things to do than to grieve some "random mortal")
Accepting her fate was easier than living with the haunting thought that she failed to protect her friend, and now there's a chance her husband or son could possibly die and she wouldn't be there to protect them either. An angel that regains hope because of their children and believe that even though their loved one passed away, they will do anything and WILL make sure to protect their young ones until their own doom, no matter what happens, they want to be there and continue raising them. But Miss Schoenheit didn't have that mentality unfortunately and believed if she stayed, Vil would've ended up hurt one way or another, she might've been strong both physically and magically but mentally she was weak and thought lowly of herself and her own abilities. She believed that Eric and Vil didn't deserve a "weak" wife and mother like her (she never expressed these thoughts to Eric either since she was just used to being turned down every time she tried to talk about it by other angels with her rank or higher), her friend dying was probably her last straw and honestly turning into a stone statue felt more peaceful to her at that moment ngl, accepting her fate was easier than fighting back so she did just that.
#ong she might've been highly respected by angels below her but any other angel that was the same rank as her DISRESPECTED HER SO BADLY#Girl was born and trained to be a leader for others and she wasn't allowed to show any signs of “weakness” because#that'd make her vulnerable and a sorry excuse for a leader#imagine being told to “drop it” after trying to explain to your co-worker/boss that your friend suddenly died and that's why#you're not doing your job well. ong i would've lost it#I should also note you guys can ask questions about her friend and how they died but#im not gonna stop you but I will say y'all might not like the answer#twst#monoduke ask
