Beginner Cosplay Tips from the Community (and me!!)
Cosplay can initially seem overwhelming, but the community provides helpful advice for newcomers! Whether you’re crafting a costume from scratch or buying your first wig, there’s always something new to learn. I contacted experienced cosplayers and gathered beginner-friendly tips to help you get started.
Start Simple and Build Your Skills
Many cosplayers recommend choosing a character with a simple design for your first cosplay. This lets you focus on learning key skills like sewing, wig styling, or prop-making without feeling overwhelmed. Gank explains by breaking down the costume into individual pieces, you’ll have an easier time planning how to create the overall look. You can look for inspiration online on Etsy or Pinterest to simulate your character's appearance using materials you can access. https://ganknow.com/blog/cosplay-for-beginners/?srsltid=AfmBOoodEIlGHkfRXmDW3kC4-3j2-hMCqZf1i9CMxwS767bjsceCT4cR From my experience, my first cosplay was very complicated. I had money to buy it from a reputable cosplay website, but it resulted in a lot of time spent on the cosplay.
2. Budget Friendly Cosplay is Possible
Cosplay doesn’t have to be expensive! Anjeez on YouTube shares that thrift stores, clearance sales, and fabric scraps are great resources for affordable costume building. If you’re looking for wigs, checking secondhand marketplaces like Depop or Facebook Marketplace can help save money while still finding high-quality pieces. https://youtu.be/0tbfaWNhSCg?si=MByt-Ay1KXy5Euop I have bought my wigs on a reputable cosplay website, and they are relatively cheap. The expensive part is the shipping since they usually ship out from Asia. Another option is you can always support small businesses selling wigs. They are usually very good quality.
3. Learn From Others
One of the best parts of cosplay is the community! Follow cosplayers on X, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube who share tutorials. Arda Wigs on YouTube has beginner wig-styling guides https://youtube.com/@ardawigs6041?si=7MX2-FSazplh5Bko, while Punished Props Academy on YouTube has a great tutorial on using foam and other materials for props https://www.youtube.com/@punishedprops. Online forums like r/cosplay on Reddit, your local anime convention, and Discord groups are also great places to ask for advice, troubleshoot issues, and find encouragement from other cosplayers. Many conventions also offer cosplay workshops, so if you can attend one, it’s a great way to learn hands-on techniques from experts.
4. Comfort is Key
A well-made costume means nothing if it’s too uncomfortable to wear. I suggest breaking in new shoes ahead of time and bringing emergency supplies like safety pins, double-sided tape, and a mini sewing kit to conventions. Speaking about the double-sided type, my favorite is the one by MoeFlavor. The name is a little weird (Jiggle Defender Waterproof Heavy Duty Body Cosplay Tape https://moeflavor.com/products/jiggle-defender-waterproof-heavy-duty-fashion-tape?srsltid=AfmBOootLWfj1ZFyvUkMoVhbsKYOIeZTw-p4QXKj2macFGvw1k_X9e0Z), but it helps prevent any cosplay mishaps. Layers and breathable fabrics can also significantly affect long wear times. Hydration and snacks are often overlooked, but staying energized lets you enjoy the convention experience without exhaustion. If your cosplay includes heavy props or tight-fitting pieces, taking short breaks throughout the day can help prevent discomfort and fatigue.
5. Have Fun and Be Confident
At the end of the day, cosplay is about having fun and expressing your love for a character. Many beginners worry about being “accurate” or “perfect,” but the most important thing is to enjoy yourself. Every experienced cosplayer starts somewhere. Mistakes are part of the learning process.
What are your favorite beginner cosplay tips? Share your experiences in the comments or tag me in your posts. I’d love to feature more community advice in the future!

Reminder: PROTECT YOUR EYES! Today I was disinfecting some contact cases & trashing all older lenses & I thought it was worth restating how important this is!! Never use lenses past their warning dates, always take them out before sleep, & if they hurt TAKE THEM OUT!! Talk to an eye doctor to make sure lenses are safe for your eye shape, don’t try to color or paint them (yes, cosplayers have tried), & stick to FDA approved lenses. Please educate yourself on their use, protect those peepers!! #contactlenses . . #cosplaytips https://www.instagram.com/p/CjeDG7HJB5E/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thanks to the Mando Kercs Builders Group on Facebook, I got the tip that Target had these perfect boots for my build …and for only $14! Women’s Universal Thread Elle Boots. The app wouldn’t let me find them, but the desktop site could let you figure out inventory. Hopefully if you’re looking for shoes, these are VERY comfy and don’t have logos to cover up. #starwars #mandalorian #mandaloriancosplay #twilekmando #cosplay #starwarscosplay #cosplaytips #starwarsmandalorian #cosplaywip https://www.instagram.com/p/CalWJJqs1yj/?utm_medium=tumblr

Another cosplay tip: The secret is that most of the studs on my costumes/props are googly eyes 👀 they can be purchased for super cheap and easily spray painted if you place them onto the sticky side of tape so they don’t blow away! #cosplay #cosplaytips #cosplaytutorial #promptoargentum #promptocosplay #cosplayprop https://www.instagram.com/p/B4QHUA1B5Dc/?igshid=19yrzx8bbl8dh

Super simple rolled hem tutorial for you! I'm not the most experienced seamstress, but I'm self-taught and somehow manage! 😂 Wanted to share this for everyone who's asked for more sewing tips. Mine ended up a bit wider than I wanted, closer to 3/16" when I intended 1/8". The fabric I used is a slippery Chiffon, and will be for a sheer tunic-dress- thing for Venusaur. Chiffon is a notoriously finicky and difficult to work with fabric, but sometimes that's what ya need for your cosplay! A rolled hem is possibly the most standard way to hem this material. By using this hem, you encase the raw edges of the fabric entirely to prevent fraying. #sewing #sewingtutorial #cosplaytutorial #cosplaysewing #cosplaytips #sewingtips #learntosew #chiffondress #rolledhem #fashionsewing #sewingfun #sewist #easysewing #handmadewithjoann https://www.instagram.com/p/CAgYuokDO4f/?igshid=13vf7tffnnssy

How to organise cosplay wigs

Estimated reading time: 2 and a half minutes.
Hi llamas! I’m going to share with you some tips on how I keep my cosplay wigs organised and always ready.
I have a small storage space and I like to keep everything packed so it’s easier to find everything I need.
Let me show you how I do it!
First off, please make sure that your wigs are all washed, dried, combed and cut, and if you missed my post on how to detangle an old wig you can read it here before continuing with the post.

What will you need beside a wig?
- Zip lock bags (because I’m a cheap bitch)
- A pen and markers
- Labeling paper
- Wig caps

How do I label wigs?
I like to label them in always the same order:
Color, length, texture, bangs/no bangs.
For example:
Brunette/Long/Straight/Side bangs
I recently started adding a color with the marker because it’s easier to pack them if I have multiple wigs out, I can easily find the zip lock bag for it by looking at the color.
For some low-quality wigs, I like to add shiny/plastic/thin references if I have multiple similar wigs. For instance, I have two brown long straight wigs, except one is very shiny and thin, and the other one is thick and looks more natural. On the one I like more I put a ♥ on the label.

How to pack cosplay wigs?
- Hold the bottom of the wig, fold it towards the top, and gently put it into a hair net, before placing it in the bag.
- Make sure that there is always a wig-cap inside the bag. When packing for conventions it’s easy to forget smaller things, so it’s always good to have one in the bag with a wig. When I didn’t have enough wig caps I would just put them in the wigs I used most often.
- I don’t have any wigs that are styled big right now. If the wig is styled then you can keep it on a wig stand so it can keep it’s shape before the convention.

How to store them?
I’ve seen a couple of ways that people store their cosplay wigs and as of now, mine are packed like this because of my small storage space. Zig-zag on top of each other, with the wigs I use most at the top.
One thing I also liked for storing cosplay wigs is putting them into zip-lock bags and then clamp them into hangers. This way you can easily browse through them.
You can also install expandable pipes into your closet and keep the wigs at the top, and costumes at the bottom.

If you found this helpful share it with your cosplay friends, this way I also know to make more similar posts. Thank you for helping the llama pack grow!

Share to help a fellow #cosplayer Tint it is used to color transparent objects! I used it here on my #rosequartzcosplay with the shield! I sprayed the inside to keep it nice and shiny, otherwise, outside provides a frosted look.
