Road Trip around Kent

Hi, I am Marie and my husband is Drew. We hope you like our blog based on our recent visit to Kent. Welcome to Jenkins Journeys, cycling, and adventuring through life. 

I had received a number of recommendations to visit Kent and as I had never been before, we decided to do it as a road trip to get the most out of the visit. We decided to hire a Motor Home and was delighted to pick up a spotless 6 berth Ford Chausson MotorHome from Motor Home Hire UK. It was a comfortable and easy drive especially as this was my first time hiring a motorhome. The vehicle came with all the extra’s you need, such as electric hook up, gas cylinder and kitchenware.

Day 1

We decided to head towards Epping Forest for our first night, as we are keen cyclists we thought it would be great to explore the area and find a campsite that was close to the Forest. Once in the area, we came across Debden House Campsite. It is a conference centre and had 6 large fields for the use of campers and large groups. It cost us £32 for the night which is more than what we would usually pay for a pitch, but as it was on the edge of the Forest we decided to stay for the one night. After a cozy sleep in the double bed above the driver's cabin, we set off for Whitstable, which we decided would be our next overnight stop. 

Day 2

We traveled across the Dartford Crossing along to Rochester,( it is important to note that you must log on to the website and pay your crossing charge before midnight on the day you travel), this was for a quick comfort break and I am glad we did as this was our first sightseeing stop, as there was lots of history in the area and an impressive Castle sitting proudly in the centre of the town. I especially liked the wonky buildings.

We arrived in Whitstable mid-afternoon and after a drive along the seafront out of town we came across Sea View Holiday Park. It has lots of static caravans, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that they had a touring site and offered pods right next to the entertainment area and washing facilities. 

As we wanted to explore the immediate area we decided to stop for the next 3 nights. The touring site was literally a stone’s throw (or pebble throw) on to the pebbly beach, with a long promenade. Once we had set up the motorhome, filling up the water tank and getting our set up right we headed out on our bikes back up the prom to Whitstable. It was a fantastic ride along a wide concrete prom passing lots of beach huts and bars and restaurants. As the area is famous for its Oyster Farm it was no surprise to learn that many of the restaurants offer wonderful seafood menu’s. As it was Sunday late afternoon most of the shops on the high street were shut, but it had lots of small independent shops and had a quaint feel to it.

Day 3

We were up early because we wanted to get out on our bikes and cycle along to Margate. As it turned out we traveled a lot further and made it to Ramsgate, this was partly due to the fantastic prom that made cycling along the coastline so much easier. The trail along the prom is called the Oyster trail and it leads on to the Viking trail, it is well signposted but given that your following on one path it is easy to navigate anyway.

After leaving our campsite the first area we came in to was Herne Bay, we stuck to the trail but it seemed like a beautiful area. Just after the bay, the trail heads away from the beach, however, we decided to push our bikes along the pebbly beach to do some beachcombing. Once around the Bay, we rejoined the trail and came to Reculver Castle Towers, an interesting stop for a quick refreshment break. 

We continued on to Margate and popped into the town for a quick look around and then continued on the trail along the way we passed some stunning coastline, namely Botany Bay, Viking Bay, and Broadstairs. Due to the time of year, there was a number of tourists but we were able to cycle along at an easy pace without having to dismount.

We reached Ramsgate and this was a pleasant surprise, it had a lovely old fashion seaside feel to the town and we visited a wonderful Fish and Chip Shop that was a well-deserved treat after the 25 plus miles ride. After sitting on the beach to enjoy our fish supper and ushering the seagulls, we took the cycle back. Lucky for us the wind was behind us and we arrived back at the campsite early evening, after a full day cycling and sightseeing.

Day 4

The next day we headed inland and took the Crab and Winkle trail on our bikes to Canterbury. The ride from our site was approx 8-9 miles along a disused railway line through gorgeous countryside and woodland. We visited Canterbury Cathedral which we believe is a must to visit when you're in town. It is steeped in history and was undergoing major renovation work, and has masses to see and learn. The town itself had lots of mini shop fronts and they also have punt trips along the Great Stour from West Gate. Here the wonky shops continued.

After speaking with a lady on the gates of the Cathedral that lives in Whitstable we decided to stop off for a seafood lunch in Whitstable, at Wheelers Restaurant. It was a quaint restaurant, with a large selection on the menu. We chose a fishcake starter and a seafood Mezze. We were instructed that the restaurant only takes cash payments and if you want a glass of wine with your meal there is an Offy across the road with a large selection of local beers and ales. So plenty to try while enjoying your meal.

On our way back to the campsite we picked up some fresh Oysters from the Whitstable Oyster Company, we paid £10 for 6 super fresh Oysters. We took them away and had them for our evening meal. It was great to hear about the history of the Oysters in the area and it was interesting to learn that this farm has over 10 million Oysters just off the shoreline.

Day 5

After packing up and moving on, we had decided to head towards Hastings and we came across a sign for Bodiam Castle as a member of the National Trust and after seeing it in our book we decided to do a slight detour and visit the Medieval castle ruins, its a wonderful sight to see, surrounded by a motto. It is one of the most impressive picturesque castles to go and see.

Due to our impromptu visit, we decided to find a campsite in the Royal Tunbridge Wells area, this was partly due to the fact that there is a number of National Trust sites to visit in the area that we wanted to visit. We had a quick google and found what we thought was a campsite called Sunninglye Farm. On arrival down a small lane, we were met by a lovely lady called Jill, she explained that they are a working farm but also have 7 stunning camping lodges or safari tents as we would call them. Although they are not set up as a campsite, she was kind enough to offer us the opportunity to park up our motorhome on their bottom sheep field close by to the communal shower block. We excepted graciously because it seemed like such a lovely location and we were not disappointed. We had two fabulous nights here and will definitely return in the future to stay in their lodges, it's a wonderful site and has lots to offer for families or groups. On this afternoon we cycled just a few miles into Royal Tunbridge Wells, the town had a number of architecturally interesting buildings but you could also see that the town is having a huge amount of upgrading and investment.

We had the privilege of cooking some of Jill’s home-reared pork in their pizza oven and it was great to make new friends of the farm animals. The chickens are free-range and would often wander around by where you sit. Take a look at their fantastic lodges. I particularly liked that the lighting was by gas lamps and you use a log burner as a stove. They had 3 bedrooms, 2 double and one was bunk beds. I think 2 of the lodges had ensuite showers but all lodges had their own toilet. Each lodge had stunning views of the countryside.

Day 6

This was a final day so we headed out on our bikes to visit Scotney Castle which was approx 8 miles from our site, this stretch was a little hilly for novice cyclists but the effort is well worth it when you reach this National Trust site with a detour to the small village of Lamberhurst. This is by far my favorite NT site, there is so much to see here. The house which was lived in by Betty Hussey, right up to recent times 2006. Its a beautiful time capsule of how she used to live, but then you have the stunning old castle and folly which you can view from the library window and explore. It’s important to add that the cafe and walled garden are worth a visit too. We did want to visit Chatwell House the home of Winston Churchill while we were in the area but we just ran out of time. So great reason to return to the area. 

Day 7

Today we were heading home but on route, we decided to visit Waddesdon Manor in Aylesbury, which is a French-style Chateau, previously owned by the Rothchild Family. The restaurant was superior for this type of national trust site, but we chose a traditional English Cream Tea, which was a welcome snack before we explored the impressive interior rooms of this impressive building. Again this was a wonderful property with lots of magnificent artworks and sculptures. You could spend a full day at this site but we were heading home, so we could clean the van in readiness to return it in the morning.

This is our first time in the Kent area and we were blown away by the number of things to see and do and we know we only scratched the surface. The motorhome experience was one we would also do again without hesitation. We have had a fantastic holiday and we crammed lots in and we would say if you're considering a holiday to somewhere new this is an area of the UK that is definitely worth your consideration. The people we have met have been friendly and extremely helpful and the changing landscapes from Coastlines to woodlands have been a joy.  Right I'm off to plan our next journey, wild camping the southwest coast path in Cornwall in a few weeks.

Someone in the Twitter thread where this originates found the listing, and it looks like at some point after the floor plan was made, probably during framing, someone realized that was fucking stupid, and put a door into the little hallway so you don't have to go through multiple rooms to get to another.

I took 3 years of drafting, 1 mechanical and 2 architectural, and you would have failed if you had designed this floor plan. Idk how or why anyone ever designed this monstrosity but it has so many problems. Attached garage with no entrance into the home?(the home owners are using it as a party room/man cave) A master without an ensuite?? That one random smol bedroom being the one with an attached half bath? Its just a nightmare. Only in California could a disaster from hell like this cost nearly 1mil.

Edit: that middle bedroom with the attached half bath, isn't to code either. Idk California's specific building laws, but bedrooms have to have 2 forms of egress, IE the door you normally enter in, and a window that can be used as egress in event of a fire. So more gigantic design flaws.

First Stop - Melbourne

So we arrived in Melbourne following a 21 hour flight from London Heathrow with a 3 hour stop over at Guangzhou, China. We flew with China Southern and booked through Omega Flight Store. Although we had read some terrible reviews about Omega, everything went as planned and was exactly what was sold to us by the company. The flight cost us £518 and we were all impressed by the service and comfort on China Southern as we had read very mixed reviews. The food catered to both Chinese and Western taste, the cabin crew were attentive and there was a good choice of inflight entertainment. However, the worst part of our journey was undoubtedly the stopover in Guangzhou; the airport was dull and appeared dirty, even though it had apparently been recently 'refurbished'. There was a very limited choice of shops and places to eat (literally two restaraunts) and people didn't seem bothered about coughing in our faces. When we finally touched down in Melbourne everything was quick and easy; passport control can be done electronically via a number of machines which airport staff directed us to. We filled out our landing cards on the plane and just handed these in as we entered Australia. The airport was easy to get around and our bags came out quite quickly. We then made our way through to the arrivals where we found a pay phone to call Base hostel in St Kilda in order for them to provide us with a code for our transfer bus. Everything went smoothly and Base directed us to the bus stop (although we did end up walking 10 minutes in the wrong direction), the main bus stops are directly in front of the Arrivals- just across the road from the terminal. As we had paid STA Travel £250 for our travel starter package which included our first week of accommodation, transfers, wifi, breakfast, tax file number, Australian bank account and Australian SIM card, there was little for us to worry about when we arrived at Base. The transfer took about 45 minutes and we couldn't check in our room until 2pm; so we left our backpacks in Base's luggage storage and headed for McDonald's (or in Australian 'maccas'). After sampling the local cuisine - cheese and bacon fries with a frozen Coke - which cost about $7, we took the short stroll back to Base. Base Melbourne was a great hostel, pretty clean and spacious, our room had an ensuite bathroom and all bunk beds came with a large drawer underneath which we were able to lock with our backpack padlocks. Although we attempted St Kilda beach for a couple of hours after checking in, the jet lag soon slapped us in the face and we were off to bed for a 12 hour nap. Waking up at 5am wasn't too bad at Base as we were able to grab a drink and a snack from the vending machines and wander downstairs to the chill out area which is equipped with large comfy sofas and a TV. After a couple of hours down there and having used our wifi to FaceTime our families, we made our way up to the bar around 7ish for breakfast. We were impressed. On the first morning I ate probably about 6 pieces of toast with butter and marmalade, 2 bowls of cereal (one with yoghurt), saw off 2 or 3 coffees and 4 orange juices. Although there is no hot food included in the breakfast, it is all you can eat and mainly carb based so a good way to bloat yourself out and save some money on food if you're on a budget. I wont go through our activities day by day while in St Kilda but I will try to mention everything that may not be necessarily interesting but definitely helpful for fellow backpackers. The main theme of our first week in Melbourne was jet lag! We just assumed that we would be over it within 3 or 4 days, but looking back on our time in St Kilda, I'm pretty sure we were some sort of jet lagged for the whole 2 weeks that we were there. However, it didn't stop us from exploring as much of Melbourne as we could on our budget. Just to make this easier to read I'll break the next parts down into sections... St Kilda St Kilda is a vibrant beachside town which thrives on it's ever growing backpacking community. There's plenty to see and do on a backpacking budget, however, what I will tell you is only of my own short stay in St Kilda. Having spoken to a few of the locals we learned that St Kilda used to be quite a rough place to live; although it doesn't appear so anymore; you can still see the remnants of what it used to be like near to St Kilda Junction leading off Fitrozy Street. The first thing you'll notice when arriving in St Kilda is how different their way of life is compared to ours back home. Almost everyone seems to be into their fitness, whether its using one of the outdoor gyms in the parks, running, cycling (everyone in Melbourne seems to cycle EVERYWHERE), swimming, paddle boarding (SUP) or kite surfing. To accompany this healthy lifestyle are a number of smoothie bars, sushi bars, vegan cafes and general takeaway joints offering various salad boxes for around $10. Don't get me wrong, if you want to be fat and unhealthy St Kilda will cater for that too. There's a Maccas (Mc Donald's) just a 5 minute walk from the beach, a number of patisseries selling amazing but calorie filled cakes and pastries; along with a number of fast food takeaways on Fitzroy street; usually offering a burger, chips and a drink for $10 or $12. To accompany the food, St Kilda boasts a number of bars and restaurants which are reasonably priced - probably around $20 for a meal on special and glass of house wine or beer. Happy hours are usually from around 3pm to 6pm with most pubs and bars offering $5/$6 wine and house beers; or a bucket of Corona (usually 5 bottles of Corona in an ice bucket) for $20. Finally on the subject of notable things about St Kilda and Melbourne is that they LOVE their coffee, and it is good! Most cafes will sell a great coffee for around $3, however my personal favourite is the $1 coffee from 7/11 (7/11 is like an Aussy version of our Spar). Transport Getting around St Kilda and Melbourne is pretty easy although it takes a while to adjust to the various routes; the good thing about Melbourne and Sydney is that most of the streets are set out in a grid form, which makes it much easier to navigate. So the main point on travel is... the MYKI card; it's pronounced like 'Mikey' just so you know. The MYKI card costs $8 to buy and can be topped up at various shops (including 7/11 which is EVERYWHERE). There is an $8 per day limit on the myki card and as far as I'm aware if you use more than that in a day, the myki card will stop charging you. The myki card works on a 'tap on and tap off' basis; so you board a train, bus or tram, tap your myki card on the reader and then tap it off again when you exit...pretty simple. Also, once you enter Melbourne's CBD (Central Business District) so 'city centre', there is a free tram called the city link which you can ride around the entire CBD and not get charged. The tram stops also clearly state when you're in and leaving a free tram zone. From St Kilda to Melbourne the tram is the easiest form of transport and takes about 20 minutes and costs around $4; you can catch either the number 16, 3 or 3A from Luna Park or Fitzroy Street and a number of stops in between. Balaclava train station is also accessible by bus or tram and provides links to suburbs such as Brighton and Hampton (for if you want a more 'Australian' experience). Finally if your feeling fit, Melbourne has it's own version of London's Boris Bikes. There are various bike stands costing $3 to hire a pushbike and helmet for the day, it will charge slightly more if you ride further than 30 minutes from where you hired the bike. The bikes can either be returned to the same place that you hired them from or docked in any free spaces near your destination. I would recommend hiring a bike from Luna Park and riding the approx. 8km into Melbourne; it's a great way to see the City and find your way around the surrounding areas. Accommodation As we were only in Melbourne for 2 weeks I only have 2 hostels to give my thoughts on. First off Base, which I mentioned earlier; this is a great hostel for meeting people and I would definitely recommend it if traveling alone. The hostel puts on entertainment every night such as trivia, beer pong, live music and a free bbq. There is also a travel and work rep present most days if you need help with anything or would like to book any day trips. However the hostel is quite expensive - averaging around $35 a night for a 8 bed ensuite. For our second week in St Kilda we moved to The Ritz for Backpackers located on Fitzroy Street, about a 10 minute walk from the kite surfing beach. This hostel was slightly cheaper, working out around $210 for the week in a 6 bed dorm. The Ritz was good value for money with free self-serve pancakes every morning and certain nights offering a free bbq and free wine and cheese. However The Ritz is definitely a hostel for long stay/ working backpackers and I maybe wouldn't recommend it if travelling alone. Although the location is pretty good, with Woolworths (not the wooly's we know, its a supermarket) just across the road and various shops, bars and restaurants along the way to the beach. Things not to be missed... St Kilda's graffiti - take a walk around the town with your camera and pap some great art. SUP -(stand up paddle board) - $25-$30 an hour, make sure it's not windy. Eureka Tower - tallest building in Melbourne offering great views of the entire city - $20 admission. Federation Square - rooftop bar, free live music and various events. ACMI - Australian Centre for Moving Image - admission and galleries are free - definitely worth a visit if you're into films or art! PHILLIP ISLAND TOUR - roughly $115 will get you admission to Moonlit Sanctuary, Koala Sanctuary, The Nobbies, a bbq lunch, Churchill Island, Smith's Beach and finally the Penguine Parade where you can watch 100's of wild penguins returning to the beach and follow them up the boardwalk to their hides. St Kilda Festival - free music festival all along the beachfront with great food, drink and a range of market stalls - something for everyone. Brighton Beach - A short train ride, the beach huts are a must-see and the beach is pretty nice too. Royal Botanical Gardens - located next to Federation Square the gardens are a great way to pass time on a budget.

Budget Accommodations in Munich, Germany: Euro Youth Hotel

There are so many reasons to visit Munich, from its beautiful historic center to its world famous Oktoberfest. You cannot have a great time traveling without a great place to sleep!

The Euro Youth Hotel is a comfortable and social hostel located just a block from the Munich central train station and a 15 minute walk to Marienplatz, the center of the historic city.

The hostel building is one of the 5% in the area that survived WWII, dating back to the 19th century. Do not fear the building is outdated, as the hostel opened up in 1998 after significant renovations. We had a fantastic stay at the Euro Youth Hotel during our stay and highly recommend it for your Bavarian adventure.

Room

We stayed in the shared 3-bed dorm.  The room has one bunk bed, a single bed and a small table with chairs. The sturdy wooden frame beds have the most comfortable mattresses we have ever slept on in a hostel.

Each bed has its own reading light, nightstand and power socket. There is no reason to have to fight to charge your phone across the room, like we have experienced in other hostels.

The room comes with lockers, a sink and the beds already made. It is important to note that the spacious lockers do require your own lock, so do not forget to bring one from home!

For our reservation we had shared bathroom and showers in the hallway. They are kept spotless and at no time did we have to wait to use the facilities. Just make sure to bring your room key with you so you do not get locked out.

There are also many other options for rooms, including both private rooms with ensuite bathrooms to 12-bed dorms. It all depends on the price range at atmosphere you are looking for. They really do blur the lines between hostel prices with hotel accommodations.

Atmosphere

If you ever have any questions about places to visit or things to do, the front desk staff are always happy to help and quite knowledgeable. As we left each morning, they made sure we knew about any events happening that day either within the city or the hostel itself.

The other guests are a good mix of young travelers or business professionals. Whether you are looking for a quiet and comfortable stay in Munich or want to head out on the town with a group of new friends, this is the place to be.

Breakfast

In the morning they have an all you can eat breakfast buffet. They have fresh bread, cheese and meat slices, veggies and scrambled eggs. There is also cereals with yogurt and fresh fruits. If you need a little boost to help wake you up in the morning there is always tea or coffee.

Steven’s favorite part had to be the endless supply of delicious homemade Bavarian pretzels. It is hard to have just one!

Breakfast costs €4.90/person and can be purchased in advance or at the reception desk when you wake up in the morning. The best part is breakfast is available from 7AM to 11AM, so there is no rush to get up after a late night out in Munich.

Bar

The same space as the breakfast buffet turns into a bar in the afternoon. There is no better way to relax after a day of touring or to socialize with fellow travelers than doing so over a beer.

Ceiling Lighting: “While the 3” recessed downlights are all that are visible in this home now, each LED light has a housing that measures 12.5” long, 9.5” wide, and 4” tall hidden above the ceiling that must be spatially accounted for. Since the city limits residential building height, it would be easier to build without planning for symmetry, or to plan for it with lower ceilings, concealing an empty pocket for fixture placement later.⁣ ⁣ It’s much more difficult, but we plan the ceiling fixture locations during framing, achieving symmetry without a pocket to preserve every possible inch of your ceiling height.” – Patterson Custom Homes.

Berlin is a gigantic city. It stretches over 883 square kilometers and is home to over 3.6 million people.

I hated the city when I first visited it. I just couldn’t vibe with the city.

But the more I came back, the more I grew to love it. Berlin is cheap (always a plus for me), it’s home to some of the best art, culture, music, festivals, and tech companies on the continent. The food scene has also really blown up in recent years and you’ll find some of the most innovative things in food happening in the city.

Traveling Berlin is awesome.

Berlin is also home to plenty of hostels and, in a city so spread out, it’s important to know where the best hostels in Berlin are. Picking your location is crucial to enjoying the Berlin experience.

1. Meininger Berlin Tiergarten

This hostel is more of a traveler / backpacker hotel. Part of a chain that stretches across Europe, it’s used a lot for group tours, school trips, and families so it’s pretty quiet. The rooms are spacious, with comfortable mattresses, big storage spaces, and ensuite bathrooms. Pets are allowed for an extra 10 EUR/11 USD per night. There’s a large common area with a foosball table too! It’s a little outside the city center in Moabit but Berlin’s easy public transit makes it quick to get around. The hostel is next to Tiergarten which is a popular hangout for Berliners.

2. Plus Berlin

Located in Friedrichshain, an artsy area near the East Side Gallery, I like this hostel because it has an indoor pool and sauna area. It’s a posh place that has hotel perks at hostel prices! The rooms are clean, and the beds are fine. They have laundry services as well as a courtyard garden. This historic building used to be a fashion school and survived two world wards.

3. Heart of Gold Hostel

This hostel features rooms that each have a different décor and hand-painted artwork. The courtyard is a great place to sit and enjoy free coffee and tea in the morning. During happy hour, they have 1 EUR (1.15 USD) beers! You have to pay a 5 EUR/6 USD deposit for sheets and towels, but you’ll get that back at checkout. This is just and overall awesome place to stay, get some sleep, and meet some travelers. It’s located in Mitte, in the center of the city, so it’s easy to get to any other neighborhood you’d like to visit.

4. ONE80°

Located just a few steps from Alexanderplatz, this hostel is clean, filled with modern amenities, and has super soft pillows. Berlin’s extensive bus, subway, and tram system is literally just outside the front door. The staff here organizes tours, including a free walking tour, a pub crawl, and a trip to Sachsenhausen (a concentration camp just outside of town). Watch out though – the communal showers have no doors or curtains (they are separated by gender though).

5. Circus Hostel

Circus Hostel is an institution in Berlin. It’s been here for over 20 years is one of the oldest hostels in the city. It’s a friendly place with comfy beds and a super fun common area. You can also rent bikes and iPads here. The bar is astounding and there’s live music on Friday nights. Check out the delicious breakfast buffet too. The hostel staff offers walking tours and there are always fun events happening. They also have a really fantastic app that travelers use to meet other people and to make plans in the city – it works really well! Overall, this is just an awesome centrally located hostel and one of the best hostels in Berlin.

6. Wombats

I love Wombats. It’s a bit big for a hostel as there are hundreds of beds (the only downside) but its filled travelers, has really snug beds, ensuite bathrooms, lockers, and a big breakfast. It’s clean and there’s a fully equipped kitchen too. But the real highlight is the rooftop bar with the outdoor patio that offers sweeping views of the city! It’s an awesome spot to drink a beer and meet people! Wombats is located in Mitte, one of Berlin’s best, busiest neighborhoods.

7. EastSeven Berlin Hostel

EastSeven has a great social atmosphere and clean rooms, and is located in a quieter area between Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg. The nearby U2 subway line will take you right to Alexanderplatz. The hostel has organized walking tours twice a day. I love the kitchen, and you can also cook in the outdoor BBQ area. They offer a cheap breakfast that is well worth the price, and beers are just 1.50 EUR/1.75 USD during Happy Hour. There’s no elevator, so be prepared to climb lots of stairs with your bag.

8. St. Christopher’s

If you’re looking to party, St. Christopher’s is the place for you. The bar next door gets quite lively and they do a lot of drink specials. I had some really fun moments here. There’s not much common space at the hostel, so the bar really is the best place to meet people (they try to get everyone there to eat and drink as much as possible). The rooms are clean, and it’s pretty quiet in the hostel itself. It’s located in Mitte, near Alexanderplatz, the TV Tower, and Museum Island.

9. The Cat’s Pajamas Hostel

What I love about this place is that it’s a quiet, calm place to stay. There’s a nice kitchen, a good common area, and less focus on drinking than in other hostels. The beds and rooms are average (not great but not bad). One thing to watch out for is that the lockers in the rooms are very small. Each bunk has a light and power outlet, and towels and hair dryers are included. It’s in Kreuzkölln – in the middle of Kreuzberg and Neukölln – one of the best areas of Berlin for drinking and dining.

10. Pfefferbett Hostel

This hostel is part of a former brewery complex in Prenzlauer Berg. It’s in a nice, safe location, two U-bahn stops away from Alexanderplatz. And, as you might expect, there’s a great 24-hour bar. The beds are comfortable, and the rooms are clean and not too tiny. I love the cozy fireplace in the lobby. As an added bonus, the hostel is a non-profit that provides jobs for disabled people, so by staying here, you are helping a great cause!

11. Minimal Hostel Berlin

In an arty part of Berlin, this newish hostel features stylish repurposed décor, in keeping with its name. It’s in the trendy, hip Neukölln area and offers six-bed dorms and two double rooms. It’s not a party place, but it’s social enough that you’ll meet some people (plus there are bars everywhere in the area). Cash is required when you arrive, and they may require a two-night minimum stay.

Berlin is a gigantic city. It stretches over 883 square kilometers and is home to over 3.6 million people.

I hated the city when I first visited it. I just couldn’t vibe with the city.

But the more I came back, the more I grew to love it. Berlin is cheap (always a plus for me), it’s home to some of the best art, culture, music, festivals, and tech companies on the continent. The food scene has also really blown up in recent years and you’ll find some of the most innovative things in food happening in the city.

Traveling Berlin is awesome.

Berlin is also home to plenty of hostels and, in a city so spread out, it’s important to know where the best hostels in Berlin are. Picking your location is crucial to enjoying the Berlin experience.

1. Meininger Berlin Tiergarten

This hostel is more of a traveler / backpacker hotel. Part of a chain that stretches across Europe, it’s used a lot for group tours, school trips, and families so it’s pretty quiet. The rooms are spacious, with comfortable mattresses, big storage spaces, and ensuite bathrooms. Pets are allowed for an extra 10 EUR/11 USD per night. There’s a large common area with a foosball table too! It’s a little outside the city center in Moabit but Berlin’s easy public transit makes it quick to get around. The hostel is next to Tiergarten which is a popular hangout for Berliners.

2. Plus Berlin

Located in Friedrichshain, an artsy area near the East Side Gallery, I like this hostel because it has an indoor pool and sauna area. It’s a posh place that has hotel perks at hostel prices! The rooms are clean, and the beds are fine. They have laundry services as well as a courtyard garden. This historic building used to be a fashion school and survived two world wards.

3. Heart of Gold Hostel

This hostel features rooms that each have a different décor and hand-painted artwork. The courtyard is a great place to sit and enjoy free coffee and tea in the morning. During happy hour, they have 1 EUR (1.15 USD) beers! You have to pay a 5 EUR/6 USD deposit for sheets and towels, but you’ll get that back at checkout. This is just and overall awesome place to stay, get some sleep, and meet some travelers. It’s located in Mitte, in the center of the city, so it’s easy to get to any other neighborhood you’d like to visit.

4. ONE80°

Located just a few steps from Alexanderplatz, this hostel is clean, filled with modern amenities, and has super soft pillows. Berlin’s extensive bus, subway, and tram system is literally just outside the front door. The staff here organizes tours, including a free walking tour, a pub crawl, and a trip to Sachsenhausen (a concentration camp just outside of town). Watch out though – the communal showers have no doors or curtains (they are separated by gender though).

5. Circus Hostel

Circus Hostel is an institution in Berlin. It’s been here for over 20 years is one of the oldest hostels in the city. It’s a friendly place with comfy beds and a super fun common area. You can also rent bikes and iPads here. The bar is astounding and there’s live music on Friday nights. Check out the delicious breakfast buffet too. The hostel staff offers walking tours and there are always fun events happening. They also have a really fantastic app that travelers use to meet other people and to make plans in the city – it works really well! Overall, this is just an awesome centrally located hostel and one of the best hostels in Berlin.

A Creative Home to Call Their Own

A couple’s clever path to a larger, more personal space

When Aimee and B made a move to upgrade to a 3-bed, 2-bath (formerly 1-bath) co-op in Park Slope, they weren’t sure if they needed a contractor, an architect, an interior designer, or all of the above. The kitchen was “more or less non-existent” and the bath needed a re-do. Essential changes, including moving walls and emphasizing the home’s architectural character, gave way to their welcoming new space. Read on for details of their renovation adventure.

My wife B and I loved our little one-bedroom duplex in Hell’s Kitchen, but it had two drawbacks. It was small and the little spiral staircase was a safety hazard that we suspected would only get worse as we got older. Our budget was tight for the 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment we wanted, but we felt like it was time to make the move.

Focusing on Park Slope, we found one apartment that wasn’t perfect, but it had enough space, so we put in an offer. We lost out to a higher bid. We found a second apartment that had a cute little balcony, but we were outbid again. It became clear that we needed to look at apartments below our budget so we could bid higher, but there wasn’t much in that range.

Finally, I expanded my search to include places with only ONE bathroom, and saw an apartment pop up that fit our budget—the listing said, “Bring your contractor.” It was a big mess, but at least it was big! I rushed to an early open house on a Wednesday morning so I could be one of the first to see it. As I left, I texted B, “It needs a lot of work, but it just feels like home.” She came back with me that Sunday and was equally smitten with the place. We had to outbid 11 other offers, but this time, we got it!

The 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom (now 2-bathroom) co-op is on the 2nd floor of a brownstone building in the center of Park Slope. The bathroom was in desperate need of an update, and the kitchen was more or less non-existent (there were a few cabinets and a sink). We knew this would be a lot of work, but didn’t know if we needed an architect, a contractor, a designer, or all of the above. We spoke to a few of each and no one thought they could do all the work we needed for anywhere close to our budget.

After seeing Sweeten on Open House NYC, we finally posted our project on Sweeten and were matched with a contractor who could guide us with design and connect us to an architect. Since we wanted to renovate the kitchen and bathroom before moving in, we decided to take the plunge and do a full renovation on the whole apartment, including installing new 5″ oak floors in a cherry stain, replacing crumbling plaster walls with drywall, and adding a washer/dryer in the hallway closet.

We didn’t have a specific style in mind for the remodel, though we wanted to save as many of the original features as possible. Both of us loved the sense of history in the home, and while a few modern lights were OK with us, we didn’t want to clash too much with the original look. So we saved the molding that was salvageable and picked new ones that matched as closely as possible. We managed to save the vast majority of the tin ceiling—a small section was ruined when we moved the wall between the rear bedrooms. The exposed brick walls and the Deco-style fireplace in our living room were also kept intact (we gave the fireplace a fresh coat of paint). Sadly, we weren’t able to save the beautiful french doors, but one now hangs horizontally on the living room wall as a piece of art.

Beyond matching the existing style, we wanted an apartment that felt cozy and creative. For me, as a writer, that meant lots of space for books. The existing small study, where one of the two doorways was removed and a transom was added, was the perfect spot for our collection. It offered me a place to write and work that felt totally stuffed with books. The writer in me also loved the bay window. Back when I first walked into the apartment, during the open house, I could already envision the banquette that could be built underneath the three windows, allowing us to lounge along the windows and read. Sitting curled up on that bench with a book is now one of my favorite activities. As an added bonus, it also gives us extra storage.

The kitchen was probably the biggest transformation. While we kept the room in basically the same spot, everything else changed. The only appliance in the kitchen when we bought the place was a small, cheap stove that the sellers brought in for the inspection. There was also a small sink and a few metal cabinets, all on the righthand wall when you faced the kitchen. Very little demo was needed in there!

We spoke with our contractor extensively about what we wanted—as large a kitchen as would fit in the space, and as open as possible. He was able to give us a 3D rendering that included all the elements we required—a large peninsula for bar stools, ample storage space including deep drawers for our pots and pans, and the triangular configuration for our stove, sink, and fridge.

We tried to bring in our “cozy and creative” feel through the fixtures and furniture. Our contractor sourced most of our materials, other than the lighting and appliances, so we had time to focus on finding just the right accent pieces. Our favorite store in Hell’s Kitchen, Domus, was a great resource for items like our bedspread and picture frames.

Our Sweeten contractor helped us to figure out the best layout in the apartment. Since we were putting in a second bathroom, we wanted to create a master bedroom that was ensuite, but we weren’t quite sure how to make that happen, including annexing some hallway space. Ultimately, a wall was removed between the two rear bedrooms so the master would be next to the large walk-in closet. That closet became the master bath and a new clothes closet was built.

Though we love the end result, the renovation process took a lot longer than we had originally hoped, partly due to waiting for city permits, some changes to our original plan, and to the general busy schedule of our contractor. We were able to stay in our old apartment for quite a while because we had low carrying costs, and held off selling it as long as possible. When we finally put our old place on the market, it sold quickly and we moved into the new place with only a few weeks’ notice.

Our contractor’s team was able to get it to a “move-in ready” state in time for our move, but we realized that our idea of move-in ready was different from theirs. The floors were dry enough to put our furniture down, but none of the kitchen appliances worked. We had one functioning toilet with the only working sink in the kitchen. B and I had an interesting few weeks of making ramen with our coffee maker and eating tuna out of a pouch.

In the end, that little rough patch just made us appreciate our wonderful new kitchen and the whole apartment even more. And we are still thrilled about all the little details that make this apartment uniquely ours.
