What if the countdown was a distraction.

Let me put on my til foil hat as I say the countdown could be a distraction. From what? Solving greater codes.

Alex knows his audience is smart, so why did he make this so easy to find?

Why didn't the timer glitch out before Soos showed up? Surely enough traffic brought in by people watching the countdown should’ve crashed it, right?

Alex Hirsch could’ve labeled it as “lost files” to intrigue us enough to focus solely on what could lie after the countdown (or, rather countup now).

I have some confidence that there is something the website has to offer, but sitting here for so long has made me question things.

It's kinda wild that neither of these has ever been addressed.

The Kiss never being addressed is more obvious; even if you aren't following @aihoshiino's countup of chapters where everyone acts like it didn't happen, it's a massive status quo change in one of the most important relationships in the entire series, arguably the most important relationship where both people are still alive, and also it's directly fueling one of the most annoyingly prevalent forms of discourse in the entire OnK fandom.

It. Goes. Nowhere. We don't even see Aqua freak out and demand that they pretend that never happened. Everyone just pretends it didn't happen. And yet, I don't think it's the most significant thing to never be addressed.

Aqua says that he's feeling depressed, though not in so few words. He can't focus on what's in front of him or do what he wants to do or even smile, because he feels guilty for hurting and using people. Ruby's response is basically "Idols can make your world shine brighter, and you're mine, so let's kiss even if you're suffering!"

I'm not surprised that didn't work. I am surprised that no one follows up on it. Not Ruby, clumsily trying to help Aqua feel like his life has meaning. Not Kana or Akane or any of his other friends. Not Miyako or Ichigo or the other adults in his life. Not even Aqua himself.

It seems absolutely absurd that a writer would drop this kind of scene on us—our protagonist isn't just depressed, he knows he's depressed, he knows he feels so guilty he can't enjoy life—and just leave it there until that depression drives him to stab himself and jump off a cliff into the ocean. Whether Aqua got better or worse, it seems like something that should come up a few times in the 20 chapters between setup and suicide, even if it's just Ruby worrying that Aqua's still not smiling or whatever.

Crack theory: Akasaka heard a lot of criticism for chapter 143 and decided to pretend it never happened.
