The Damen Silos; Chicago, IL

The Damen Silos 

The Damen Silos is located on a peninsula on the South side of Chicago facing the Chicago River. The Damen silos are historically known as “The Santa Fe Grain Silo”. The Damen silos functioned as a huge distributor of grain in the city of Chicago, however, over course of years, fires exploded due to the rebuild of a grain elevator. The creation of grain caused multiple fires due to the mixture of inorganic and organic chemicals that were used to make grain. These multiple fires/explosions cause the abandonment of this place, thus creating a new urban typology of architecture/landscape architecture

The Damen silos now function as a place for teenagers and photographers to explore the site. The mixture of graffiti, empty spray cans, broken rubble provides a derelict environment that leads discovery. As you step into the site, you can see broken sheet metal, holes in the wall, and see the pastoral native / non-native grasses take over the site -- truly urban wilderness.

The Silos itself stand over 100 feet tall. Chicago’s locals have taken initiative to create ropes and ladders that lead to the top. A quick youtube search and you see “thrill seekers” climb open these ropes to reach the top the silos.

To add to this dysfunctional emergent landscape, “squatters” have been spotted around the site living inside the silos. Fortunately, I did not encounter one of these squatters. I became aware them through research online. A quick research on the Damen Silos once sees forums of squatters claiming their spot on certain days.

Through the lens of design, one sees the urban dynamic this site creates. The immense information of opportunity and ideas emerge based on a phenomenological experience one feels going to the site. The visit to this site has sparked a new interest to me in the design world: To repurpose derelict “abandon” structure or landscape. I do not only want to repurpose these structures but to start a conversation about broken window theory, as a directly or indirectly relates to impoverished communities. These abandoned landscapes provide so many layers of dynamic and intellectual information that relates to ecology, cultural, and the field of landscape architecture overall. I suggest every landscape architect, urban designer, photographer, or urban explorer to visit this site once.

The department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona is celebrating 60 years of landscape architecture education, leadership and change in Southern California. In recognition of this milestone, CPPLA has organized a series of events throughout 2017 to celebrate our past, mark our present and commemorate our history. We invite you to come celebrate with us as we continue to pursue a bravely curious future. This event is recommended for all current students and open to all alumni, prospective students, and program donors.

We have a big day planned full of student-focused events! (Prospective students: come catch a glimpse of the creative fervor - and experience a day in the life of - a Landscape Architecture student. Alumni: come to reconnect with other alums, the LAPAB, and support your alma mater.) The 18th will include a 'town hall' format panel discussion with the CPP Landscape Architecture Professional Advisory Board (LAPAB), studio visits from the LAPAB, the opening of the IndiVISUALS sketchbook show, a department BBQ and a set of student Pecha Kucha presentations to help announce the 2017 department scholarships!

IndisVISUALS Opening and BBQ

IndiVISUALS showcases a yearlong odyssey of visual notation/thinking/dreaming/observations bound within the pages of more than 50 sketch books from current students and recent landscape architecture graduates. The gallery will be open, the artists will be on hand, and discussions will ensue. The show is located in the gallery of building 7.

14 students who were awarded some of the 60k in scholarships last year will be presenting the creative work, research, service and travels supported by the scholarships they were awarded.  This rapid-fire presentation event will be full of ideas, itineraries and imagination.  The presentations will made in the atrium of building 7.

2017 Scholarship Announcements

The department will present the scholarship available for all students of the department in the 2016/17 academic year.  

This event is free to all current students and alumni.  This event is sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona in celbration of the 60 years of landscep architectual education in Southern California. All parties interested in doanting to this event can do so though the 'donation ticket' of this event or by contacting the department directly.

Mentoring Event - THURSDAY OCTOBER 2nd during U-Hour. Location TBD.  Bring your lunch and socialize! Hopefully you'll find someone that you feel comfortable with to either mentor or be a mentee to!
