Some horses are a little bit crab.
One of my favorite parts of The Stormlight Archive, especially The Way of Kings, is how Sanderson introduces this deeply alien landscape to us. He does so mostly by not introducing things specifically, only narrating as if the viewpoint character were looking at normal stuff that everyone sees all the time—which, to them, they are! Sanderson also often uses one-off names for things, like I think he uses the word "chull" before he actually describes one, and leaves you, the reader, to make your assumptions on what those words could mean. Often you assume you're in "rabbits are called 'glips'" territory, where normal things are called by a fantastical name just for flavor.
The reason why I like this is that you get some moments that are... the closest feeling I can compare it to is "dawning horror," when you realize your assumptions are wrong. Like I heard about "songlings," and I assumed, "Ah, yes, birds!" And then I heard about axehounds and I assumed, "Ah, dogs :)"
And then you actually encounter songlings in the text and. Oh. They're cricket-crab things. Uh.
And then Sanderson actually shows you an axehound and it's even worse, it's a crab-dog!
After that you're left sweating. What else is actually crab? Are the horses secretly crabs? They keep mentioning hogs, but we never see a hog described, are they actually crabs??
But the answer is no. They're just pigs. Brilliant.

Seiko can't save her kids from the aliens.
With the yokai, she can come in swinging--literally--taking out threats with Nessie and her barriers and a lifetime of knowledge. Her powers might be limited but goddamn if she doesn't wield them with skill and experience, to devastating effect.
But it means jack and shit when her kids are locked into Empty Space, away from her, and she only learns they were in danger at all when they come stumbling back into the house, battered and bruised, victorious but traumatized.
So she does what she can: she softens the blow.
She hears the story of the freshwater crab nearly taking down a skyscraper while they were inside and serves up piping hot crab legs.
She listens as Momo shakily recounts the Acro-Silky's tragedy, Aira shivering and the Wonder Nerd quietly crying in the background as he hears it for the first time. And she boils loop after loop after loop of the finest, most hair-like noodle she could find.
Sushi, after the Mantisian and the Loch Ness Monster.
Barbecue, after the volcanic eruption.
Whatever she could think of that lets those kids have one last victory over whatever tried to kill them. Because if they can associate the smell, the texture, the colors, the heat, with something, anything else, maybe the trauma will ease up on them just a little.
Survival is victory; eating is victory, when the alternative is being eaten. Consuming is the most primal victory an animal can experience. So Seiko offers reflections of their trauma to the kids, succulent and nourishing and proof of their victory.
The crab tried to kill you. You won. You ate it. So when you see a crabshell, remember the meal, not the battle.
The hair nearly strangled you. You won. You ate it. When you feel the texture, remember the meal, not the fear.
Remember the meal, remember the victory. Remember the love, and the warm place that welcomed you home.

SO I CHECKED THE NUMBERS AND IT LOOKS LIKE JUST SLIGHTLY OVER 56% OF A WIN FOR KRYPTOS STAYING MY LAWYER, BUT PINCHY CAME IN AT A VERY RESPECTABLE 44-ISH PERCENT. SO I THINK I'LL JUST LET THEM BOTH BE MY LAWYERS AFTER ALL. GIVEN ALL THE SHENANIGANS I PLAN TO GET UP TO, I SHOULD PROBABLY HAVE MORE THAN ONE ANYWAY!!
NOW WHO'S GONNA CLEAN UP ALL THESE CRABSHELL BITS AND PRIME NUMBER BLOOD?!

The First Slash and monster defence
Brianna: "My blue cloak gives me 20 defense!"
Gil: "The 'Crabshell Ring' is a magical charm from The First Slash guild, fortifying the body. It'll suit you well."
So, we know that the First Slash is a guild that mainly focuses on magic and monster research. But they seem to especially focus on defence. Not only did they apparently invented the crabshell ring, Brianna putting emphasis on her blue cloak implies that her guild's cloaks are different than the normal cloaks used by other adventurers.
And 20 points of defence is an absurd number, nearly as high as the tempered galaxy hammer, so it would make sense for Brianna to be proud of her equipment. After all, 20 points is the cloak alone, add the hammer with 25, space boots with 4 defence and the crabshell ring with 5 defence and a First Slash adventurer could have a 54 defence - and they might have better boots than the space ones. For context, the strongest non-corrupted non-boss monsters usually have a 30 - 40-something attack, including the serpents in the Badlands and the monsters in the Highlands.
That's without including any other defensive spells and talismans or any potions or elixirs that an experienced adventurer will have access to. No wonder Lance doesn't have any scars, he's basically untouchable for weaker monsters.
The only exception to this are the shadow brutes in the Highlands cavern, which deal 60 points of damage, on par with some corrupted monsters in the Badlands, which are all supposed to be unusually strong. And Lance admits that the shadow people there are a danger to him.
So it seems that one of the responsibilities of the First Slash guild is to figure out new and better ways to protect adventurers. And the crabshell ring implies that they use monster research, like the one Lance does in the Highlands, for this purpose.
Lance: "The magical flames act as a form of monster repellent. I created them myself."
Camilla: "We've figured out lots of handy tricks around here to deal with our little monster problem. See that green fire? It's a magical deterrent that strongly discourages them from encroaching on this tower. With fire…"
An interesting point I didn't realized until writing this post is Lance's dialogue about his blue flames. When he mentions he created them I assumed he means he magically summoned the flames himself without needing help from other mages (and that it's kinda cute how proud he is of singlehandedly surrounding a small tower with the occasional blue fire). And since Camilla uses similar flames in Castle Village I thought they are her invention.
But with the First Slash being involved in magical research and inventing spells themselves, Lance might have actually created the flames first and they later got applied to Castle Village. After all it's a defensive spell, which his guild apparently specializes in. Camilla could have modified the spell to fit the Badlands better or even improve it which is why the Castle Village ones have a different colour. (The colour could also change depending on the mage casting the spell for all we know).
#even the bubble charm they are trying to create is similar to a defence shield#and by attracting torpedo trouts they are acting like a shield to other islands too#they have a theme going#a theme that fits well with lance's knight aesthetics#sve lance#sve lore#i hope i didnt posted this before#i had a weird deja vu sense writing this and had the idea for the first part for a while#if i did oops#pretend you never read it before

Breeding Ground & Feeding Ground (Sarah Pinborough) "The world is changing. Women everywhere are giving birth to a new life form — hideous spidery nightmares that live to kill — and feed. As England becomes a series of web-shrouded ghost towns, those left alive must band together in order to survive and find a way to fight back . . .
In a sleepy English village Matt Edge and those he has gathered together head for a secret government facility in the hope of finding refuge and answers there, only to find some of their problems are just beginning. In London, a group of schoolboys must take on a crazed drugs lord, determined to create an empire from the wreckage of the city, in order to escape . . .
. . . and everywhere, for each of them, the Widows are waiting . . .’"
The Spiders (Richard Lewis) "Imagine a spider as big as a Goliath bird-eater with masticating jaws, venom that first paralyzes and then kills, a hard crabshell-like exoskeleton, and two evil eyes that you can see looking at you. Now imagine that's just the drone in a social system similar to an ant or bee colony — its job is to find food and bring it back to the hive, which consists of some even larger spiders and an enormous queen. This is what the protagonists of the book have to deal with in order to save England, where the spiders are slowly advancing from the country into the cities."

I want to be untouched by the world again to live so utterly and completely within the walls of being alive that death feels like a distant memory not something coming down the pike towards me at all times. longed for or not longed for but on its way either way. I want to peel everything apart I want to get at the pith of the world I want it to come apart in small segments turning yellow turning orange I like it and it likes you. I dont see or understand anything unless I can get my hands inside of it. I feel like my blood is pickling my bones. I feel like I'm getting sick. I feel like I need to irrigate my entire body. I dont want the whole thing I want its parts the small bits making the whole the descending harmonies buried in the mix and the waves coming in all together and the tide washing away the entire city and the only thing left are damp crabshells in the fruit bowl. Will you wait for it?

I really wish some of the ring combinations in Stardew Valley would give you an artistically distinct version of the ring.
Like these two! They're two halves of a whole. They go together! I feel like obtaining and combining them should produce something a little more special than a plain "combined ring" with matching color shift.
Call it something like "Rejuvenator" or "Dark Rejuvenator" if you want to lean into the monster murder part a little more. Only obtainable through combination at the forge.
And while I know you can't combine two rings of the same type I would love to be able to combine two Crabshell Rings to make some kind of "Shield of the Valley" or...honestly that's the best name I can come up with.

So in my internet travels, I stumbled across a page from one of the people who worked on modeling Mandroid's Final Form. Some snippets from the artist's commentary:
"Extremely excited about this one- I got to model the BIG BAD of Transformers: EarthSpark. Mandroid "D" as he was known internally at ICON, or as "CrabKing" to me and me alone."
I"M DYING AT CRABKING. I wish one of the characters actually called Mandroid this to his face.
"A wonderfully evil looking, part-organic, four-armed, crabshell inspired abomination. I couldn't have been more happy to work on it! I still can't believe I was paid to model an abominable crab-borg with a laser battle-axe for a tail. I'm pretty sure I drew something exactly like this in my grade 4 math notebook..."

you know, today i saw a very interesting chart i think you'd enjoy. so this wonderful little cancer man had a sag pluto smack dab on his midheaven! before, he had described himself as quite mysterious and upon seeing it, i believed it. i wonder if you've ever seen placements that instantly explained to you something the person had told you about themselves or their own self perception and if so, any fun ones?
oooh, interesting! i have never met a person with a pluto like that. i would expect that, saying such a thing, plus having that pluto, he goes out of his way to SEEM mysterious. cancerians also hide behind their little crabshells a lot, i notice (i do this a bit myself as a multiple cancerian lol).
i will say the placements that are like this for me ARE usually pluto ones, i once knew a girl who was weirdly secretive about everything... she had a secret fiance for 6 years, i don't know if she was also planning to get secretly married... she would get new jobs and not tell anyone and people would just wonder where she went all day. she was also bold as all hell, she would go pick fights with anyone she thought had done her or anyone she knew wrong. turned out she had mars in scorpio, and her sagittarius moon exactly conjunct pluto. but, i don't think she necessarily perceived herSELF as secretive or bold... everyone else just did lol.
i have also known people who considered themselves extremely industrious and organized, and then found out they were full of capricorn and virgo placements. usually they scoff at me if i point it out, haha.
and, i'm a physics student and one of the chronic issues i run into is young men who fancy themselves the next richard feynman. and it is not really the case with feynman himself (a taurus with a gemini moon) but these men almost all have prominent leo placements. they don't know this about themselves typically, they just perceive themselves in a certain way and have an astro trend i notice :)
