Oh my god, I just won at Anime Chicken

I was waiting for my dad to leave the room so I could put on Dragon Maid, but he just sat there scrolling his ipad like “just start your show, what are you waiting for??”

I stalled a bit, debating picking a safer show, then decided to risk Dragon Maid since I really wanted it and was pretty sure it was a clean episode

and not only did he leave during the theme song, he literally turned his back at EXACTLY the moment boobs started bouncing

The Rumic Gods were smiling on me today, I found a DVD of the Mermaid Forest TV miniseries at a secondhand anime store 😭 and I only found it cus I went into the M’s to torture myself looking for exorbitantly priced Maison Ikkoku DVDs

Generally when I hyperfixate on cartoons/anime I’m not able to really talk to my dad about it because he’s not interested and has no point of reference to relate to it (and I’m always super worried about annoying or boring somebody by talking too much about something they don’t care about)

and when I hyperfixate on American live-action stuff or specific actors, it’s like a constant dance of A) obsessively infodumping about it because he’s a tv/movie buff and knows every actor and every thing they’ve been in and it’s SO good to have a conversation about something I care about that the other person is actively engaged in, and B) furiously trying to repress myself from talking about it 24/7 because I’m so embarrassed that he can tell how obsessed I am

but like, this time I think I activated HIS hyperfixation?? I wouldn’t shut up about Andy Kaufman after we watched Man On The Moon and now he’s watching Taxi with me every morning and excitedly telling me trivia he looked up on IMDB. It’s wild, I haven’t had a fandom friend (where we’re both into the same thing at the same time) in so long and I haven’t had a Common Special Interest with my dad in even longer. I feel like I’m getting away with something XD

Obviously I'm biased XD but I've reread this a bunch of times (rereading my initial drafts while working on it plus revisiting it over the years) and I remember most of the good lines without prompting and it still makes me laugh so hard I cry, so please, if you remember me for anything, remember me for this because I can't share it on my professional account cus it's side-by-side with a bunch of reader-insert and smut oops

The benefits of having an ADHD DIY father is sometimes you set something broken aside to ask him about it, and then he sees it when he wanders into your room and asks YOU about it and then just immediately starts fixing it

I know it’s human nature to look for patterns and meaning in things,

but also sometimes you go through a whole year of finding oddly specifically perfect “I was just thinking about this” stuff at thrift stores,

and sometimes you find a movie starring your weird actor crush and you go “maybe—but no, NO, I don’t need to buy every movie they’re in—but what if—NO, you don’t even know if you’d like it, and it’s probably on streaming—but then again—look you’re here with your mother and she already thinks you think about this actor a weird amount, leave it there, LEAVE IT THERE”

and then you go to another section and wind up circling back to read the movie summary on the back

and then you go to another section and wind up pulling out your phone to Google if it’s on streaming

and then you get halfway to the checkout before circling back again like the simp you are

and the DVD case is EMPTY

and you bust out laughing because wow, it really feels like a trap, it was set there deliberately to see if you’d give in to your doofus temptation

and it’s really hard not to think that some force out there in the universe just wanted to make you smile
