I love johnny as a character but I think it's kinda crazy how this show straight up refuses to have him acknowledge that he bullied daniel and that he was wrong for it. the writers really did the "both were equally wrong" thing and that was so bizarre to me

For the longest time I was mind boggled by how a show that claims to be about Johnny Lawrence’s redemption could possibly fail to even truly acknowledge his original crime of bullying Daniel. But more and more it has become evident that when this show said “redeem” they didn’t mean from being a bully or an absent father, they meant from being a loser. Which is why this show will undoubtedly end for Johnny with a trophy in one hand and a trophy wife in the other, a brand new redemption baby, and his still neglected son and childhood victim standing happily by his side. Johnny will have won at life without having to ever meaningfully change or make amends for his wrongdoings, and it will all be hollow and meaningless because of it—a depressingly ironic parallel to his season 1 AVT victory.

one thing i'm noticing about most cobra kai discussions that i'm seeing online is that many people seem to not have watched the karate kid movies before watching the show -- which, on the one hand, is understandable given that the show does provide enough context to stand on its own (and that many fans are young enough to have missed the original movies), but on the other hand, there will always be some things that you can only really get if you watched the movies.

i, however, dutifully decided to do my karate lore homework before starting the show, so i'm aware of the difference this should make in the experience. like, for instance, the fact that daniel opposed the creation of cobra kai less because of his personal rivalry with johnny and more because an insane coked up millionaire terrorized him and mr miyagi for weeks when he was a teenager and tried to groom him into having a villain arc on karate kid 3, specifically through recreating cobra kai but doing it in 'the right way' and tricking daniel into joining it, all with the goal of corrupting daniel and making him suffer a humiliating defeat in order to bring the dojo back and spread it throughout the country like some saturday morning cartoon villain. an experience which shook daniel up more than having a duel to the death with a karate assassin who tried to kill him and his girlfriend with a knife. so when he sees his old school rival trying to reopen the same dojo, he's not into it lol

me and my yuppie boyfriend are going to back away and leave now to the timeline where cobra kai is created by normal, genuine people who are also good writers and don’t cater to fans and are able to expand on the original trilogy with thoughtfully planned characters and plot and respecting the original actors and their intentions with said characters.

and also you three will go completely bald and die alone and never amount to anything meaningful ever in your lives and also no one will ever love you.

this andisol fanart was supposed to be a surprise addition to the letter i sent to @carmendiazbian for christmas, but with the shitload of things i had going on last year, i was only able to finish this just this morning.

to say that this fic has been one of the solid stories that kept me writing for the binary boyfriends is a clear understatement; em's cheerleading throughout the course of three years in and out of the fandom high has been nothing short of motivating. andisol also made me realize the power of great writing when you understand the characters' motivations and how to use them against each other in some real fun angst! i'm glad to be writing pals with her all these years, and since the show is ending, i thought about creating a good one to celebrate the fic's near homestretch! (also don't worry i've been gently harassing her to write the rest.)

Kinda started rereading Dressrosa and... Although I always chalked up the similarities between Crocodile's plan to take over Alabasta and how Doflamingo took over Dressrosa as nothing but Oda reusing similar plot elements but in a slightly different way (just to show us what could've become of Alabasta had Croc gotten away with his schemes, what Luffy helped prevent from happening to begin with)...

Robin's reaction to hearing the story of Dressrosa and HOW Doflamingo took over the country, that simple little "...!!", actually does kind of speak volumes

Like if you wanted canonical evidence to Crocodile having been "inspired" by Doflamingo, then yeah, Robin would be The Person who would pick up on that, she'd be the person who'd be like "hey, that story sounds awfully familiar to what Crocodile did", since he was her boss

Do want to note that, timeline-wise, Doflamingo only took over Dressrosa 10 years ago, where as Crocodile had been Scheming and establishing his position as the Hero of Alabasta for 16 years. Like Croc's intent to obtain Pluton and create his military nation utopia absolutely pre-dates Doffy's takeover, so that wasn't and can't have been inspired by Doflamingo at all. It's more just the plan and method Crocodile ended up going with (framing the king (through a bloodbath) and putting the country in a position without a ruler where he could just yoink it for himself with ease) where the similarity becomes more obvious. But it is also kind of where it ends. Doflamingo wanted Dressrosa because he felt like he was entitled to the island (as his family had been its original rulers and he was a Tenryuubito), and was using the island for his own gains (Smile manufacturing etc, for his dealings with Kaidou), all while having a great distain and hatred of the world and how he had been "wronged" (=Tenryuubito rights revoked). Meanwhile... yeah, Crocodile wanted to create a "utopia", only targetting Alabasta because he believed Pluton was there and because Pluton would be needed for his ideal military nation. That minor difference and Crocodile's clear and great distain and hatred of Doflamingo combined...

Yeah, I dunno, this is just interesting to me. God I need Robin and Crocodile to have a lil reunion chat

You know what could be a really funny and fun crossover? Especially with my constant dragon AUs? Danny Phantom and Wakfu. 

See, Danny and Tucker have decided to reincarnate together, almost like a vacation after reaching the age of 100. But see, they let Sam choose where they were going to be hanging out for the next however long, for fun! 

And see, she saw world full of plants and life and an utter asshole trying to destroy a plant-person city what the fuck- and she tosses their souls into that world right away. 

Now see, they didn’t really have any request about their reincarnation except that they were able to stick together. And what better way than for them to come from the same egg! Okay so maybe they arrived a little early- thank you Clockwork- but it’ll take a while to hatch anyway. 

Okay, so maybe they’ve hatched alone, but that’s also fine! Sure for literal babies probably not, but they know how to do stuff- mostly. They’ll figure it out! Besides, Tucker is a freaking dragon now, and that’s so cool! And Danny has these cool wing-horns and mini portals too! Sure it’s currently only for this world, but still! 

It’ll be fun, and honestly they know how to survive a desert! Mostly!

Just went through your blog - thanks so much for putting to words why I wasn't able to stomach continuing watching the show 😭 I only started watching when the finale was released because I was hoping to binge it and I just... eeeeee. I only saw the original movies last Christmas with my siblings and we loved it sm (not so much TKK3 tho). It meant a lot to us and we really appreciated the messaging. My baby brother was bullied a lot in school just a couple of years ago and his bullies didn't get punished because "violence is a normal part of growing up as a boy," obviously we moved him to a different school. It was awful being told that especially after my brother came home to us crying because he was slapped around by his classmates. He's never the type to respond with violence and that made him an easy target.

And the show... I don't know, felt like it was advocating that? I was getting confused when they started framing Johnny's physical bullying of Daniel and Daniel's funny pranks in response as... equal amounts of bad? The idea of a Johnny redemption show was cool - even if he didn't really make much of an impression on me from the first movie. But it seems like the whole show is just Johnny on mental and emotional standby while the rest of the characters adjust around him, and based on your rants about the ending ��� he gets rewarded for it. The show feels like it was written by bullies who peaked in high school for sure 😕

I’m really sorry to hear about your little brother, I hope things are better for him now. Bullying gets downplayed a lot in media but it is horrific, and watching someone you love have to go through that must have been really terrible.

And yeah, the hand-waving away of everything Johnny did to Daniel in this show…well I guess it should have been the biggest red flag to me that this wasn’t a show I would ever be satisfied with. I guess I was able to excuse it for a little while with, this is Johnny’s POV, especially when talking to Miguel in the first season. This is how he sees it, and it’s actually kind of fascinating to explore that. And then the show went on and on and we had the bs line from Ali about them both being responsible or whatever lol, and I kind of clued into the fact that this show really never would hold Johnny majorly accountable for any of it. And I kind of understood, because we had an entire movie showcasing exactly what a cruel bully Johnny was, so maybe they didn’t want to harp on it. I wasn’t happy because him acknowledging at least what he did wrong is key to his redemption imo, but I guess I figured like a lot of Johnny’s relationship with Robby, it was just resolved off-screen. Not satisfying at all, but also like. It’s whatever ultimately.

So then to have Johnny this season reiterate to Miguel yet again that he was just “hellbent on revenge for all the shit Daniel pulled” or whatever it is he said I was just like, what the fuck? We’re still here? Johnny still hasn’t realized that Daniel spraying him with water one time is not the same thing as beating the living shit out of a kid at every turn? And it could be argued that Johnny was just referring to his mentality at the time. Fine. But then he goes on to reopen Cobra Kai, tries to justify the same ideology that turned him and a whole new generation of students into a bully, and then…he bullies a little 12 year old for wearing glasses.

Idk. I just think ultimately this show left Johnny off as a worse person than he was in the movies. Johnny at the end of the film was redeemed, mostly. And this show broke him down further than that, brought him to a worse place with the promise of ultimately redeeming him, and then after 2-3 seasons where he actually did have some growth, exactly like you said they just kinda left him where he was at and had everyone else adjust and develop around him. And then they brought him right back down to the beginning and ended the character there. That’s not what redemption is. And I guess I just bought into this show actually wanting to see Johnny’s trajectory and see him grow and change and move on from the toxicity that has ruled his life thus far, and so for him to end this show remaining trapped in the same cycle he has spent 40 years trying to break free from is just. Maybe the worst ending I could have ever imagined for him.
