This Is A Box

That @artofsuri has been making neat stuff again: she held the Creating Heroines pop-up stall last month where visitors could drop in and create a heroine. The she made a zine as part of a collaborative art project with the British Council’s literature team! You can download the free zine here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13qPYRXlPvuIDKiNTkcBs5_lNOYQnzG1K/view

I've been meaning to write about this particular experience and achievement as the year comes to a close. Earlier this year in June, @macha_73 my friend and artist from Nepal and I were invited by the British Council Belgium to participate in the European Development Days (EDDs) in Brussels. The EDDs are a forum organised by @europeaid and attended by 8000 people from all over the world including many high-level speakers such as royalty and heads of states, lucky for us we got to run into the queen of Spain! . We were invited to represent Creating Heroines at the British Council stand, a continuation of our workshop in Nepal which was aimed to explore ideas and visuals of heroines and inspirational women within the South Asian context. The theme of this year’s EDDs was “Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development: Protect, Empower, Invest.” We were to engage visitors at the stand across the two days of the event, and talk to them about their ideas of what it means to be a heroine; encouraging them to share stories of inspirational women in their lives and creating visuals based on these personal stories. . We heard countless inspirational stories from various women and men, many of whom spoke about their grandmothers and mothers, who had faced adversity due to gender inequality, but through perseverance, were able to achieve their dreams. We had visitors from various countries, including the inspirational and beautiful Belgian Congolese artist Zap Mama. . In the end we had one of the most interactive stands at the event, a great achievement on the part of British Council in Brussels. Also I have to say I instantly fell in love with Brussels’ multi-cultural mix of people from all over the world. A big thank you to Clarissa Castek and Rosanna Lewis for their incredible hospitality and encouragement, and thank you for giving us a beautiful dose of Brussels. Here's to hoping 2019 brings more art and travels, and experiences with new countries, people and cultures. ❤❤❤ . #EDD #EDD18 #europeandevelopmentdays #eudev #brussels #pakistan #nepal #britishcouncil #britishcouncilbelgium #artists #creatingheroines #feminism #womenempowerment (at Tour & Taxis) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br48ZKWnPBI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1j9z7yyha4pg

One of the reasons I've been on a hiatus – last month I got an amazing opportunity to travel to Kathmandu, Nepal to participate in a workshop titled 'Creating Heroines' as part of the @wowglobal Festival organised by the @britishcouncil . I got to meet and make friends with the coolest girls + illustrators @_bandanaa @macha_73 & Promina Shrestha from Nepal and @isurimh from Sri Lanka ❤️💛💜💙💖⭐️ so much love for you guys!!! And @nicolast.reeten facilitator of our workshop and all time illustrator star, thank you for being you 💃🏽💪🏽👑 basically QUEEN! . We spent 3 beautiful and invigorating days together, talking and drawing about what mattered to us as women in our separate countries and cultures and bring them together to see how many of our experiences overlapped. During the course of the workshop, we came to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a perfect woman or a perfect heroine. A heroine for us, is a woman who owns up to her strengths along with her flaws. A woman who works to get what she wants and tries to learn from her mistakes. A woman who is strong, but can also be scared at times. . #creatingheroines #britishcouncil #southasia #pakistan #nepal #srilanka #kathmandu #workshop #girlsrule #girlpower #illustrator #illustration #illustrationworkshop #subcontinent #browngirls (at Kathmandu, Nepal)
