theory credit to violetmadness7 on insta
what if i told you that the real victim of the duel is burr? what if hamilton throwing away his shot was in reality a very selfish and manipulative action? i know, i know, you might think i’m crazy, but i’m not. this theory shows that hamilton wasn’t a saint or “cinnamon roll” historically, or at least in the duel. he got what he wanted : to die. but why would alexander have wanted to kill himself? that is something i can’t fully know, but it is possible that due to phillip’s death he would be depressive and may have lost all will to live. why do you think the duel was manipulated? there’s 3 concrete and valuable reasons of why i think this. the failed shot: some of you may know, alexander didn’t shoot at the sky, instead, he shot at burr but aimed to miss. but why? if he wanted to live why wouldn’t he have shot at the ground or the sky? he knew perfectly well that his shot would miss burr. the letter: let’s rewind, before the duel, hamilton wrote a letter telling the world about his intentions of not shooting burr, which is mentioned in “ten things, one thing.” the question again is… why?? this only proves even more that he knew he was going to die. the reason? well, if he shot at the ground, to the right or even to the sky, the witness would be able to tell perfectly. but shooting the way alexander did, they wouldn’t. they could just say he missed, but not on purpose. hamilton knew this. the pistols: i think that this is the last and confirming proof. in the duels, one of the opponents was in charge of bringing the guns, and in this case it was hamilton who brought them. but a thing burr didn’t know is that is that his adversary gave him a pistol with a trick: a hair trigger. what that means is that at the slightest pressure the gun will release. if hamilton didn’t want to die, why would he break the rules just to give an advantage to his enemy? it doesn’t make sense. extra, his glasses: hamilton didn’t need his glasses, why would he wear them to confuse burr? why did he make it this way? this is a pretty easy answer. if he killed himself, he wouldn’t be remembered in the way he wanted. dying the way he did would assure that he would be remembered as a saint, and if that wasn’t enough, he also ruined burr’s career and left him as “the demon who shot our hero.” it was the perfect opportunity to get what he wanted.
