Vid WIP meme (continued)
Thank you so much for the ask, @thetimemoves!
"How fun! I would love to know more about the two Sherlock vids: Memento Mori and Headlock. I’d also love to hear more about the songs you associate with different characters."
Memento Mori is a song by the group Fish in a Birdcage. I actually started to make this vid in the somewhat frantic run-up to the most recent round of Holmestice before switching tacks to fic writing. I was introduced to the song via a wonderful Sherlock & Co. playlist on Spotify, and as soon as I heard it, I thought the darkly playful sound was perfect for the more frenetic Holmesian adaptations, like BBC or the Ritchie films. The theme of the song seemed to me to be about the adrenaline rush that comes with mystery + the fascination of death, plus the abhorrence of mundanity (my mind rebels at stagnation, give me problems, give me work!) That repeating chorus ("I never wanted to sleep") plus the self-aware, mordant cheek of the verses ("ashes to ashes, dust to dust, filling up my coffee cup") -- there's an awareness here that this character craves the stimulation of violence/danger and the exultation of being constantly in overdrive. The "hound" references in the bridge obviously lend themselves to Baskerville. The verse "inside the timeless cage, I never wanted to sleep" definitely brings the Mind Palace sequences to mind, especially in The Abominable Bride where he mentally retreats so far into another time and place that he temporarily loses his sense of reality.
I started this vid with images of water cascading down paired with Sherlock stepping up onto the ledge at Barts in The Reichenbach Fall. Then we cut to a shot of John choking on smoke inside the Guy Fawkes pyre paired with a shot of a beautiful, flickering flame. The title card comes up -- Memento Mori -- and we get Mycroft's dialogue ("You're not haunted by the war Dr. Watson. You miss it. Welcome back.") That's all timed over the opening instrumental and when the first verse starts (ashes to ashes, dust to dust) we cut first to the shot of dirt flying around John at Maiwand as he's shot, then to the opening of ASIP and the glimpse of the gun he keeps in his drawer, and a lingering shot of him near tears in his bed, post-nightmare, "I never wanted to sleep." I timed out some of Sherlock's riding crop swings at the corpse to match the initial percussion when it comes in. Plus: "Memento mori leaves a debt, you haven't paid it yet" = Sherlock rotating the IOU apple after Moriarty's visit in TRF.
Anyhow, that's about as far as I'd gotten. The process is slower than it used to be because I lost all my old vidding programs when my former laptop died a year ago, and I'm only slowly learning new programs/finding alternatives that work. It's still an open question whether I'll get any new vids done, especially anything that would require me to rip new footage (the software to do that is increasingly elusive, at least for me). But we'll see :)
Headlock by Imogen Heap is another song that I thought has the right sound for BBC Sherlock. The theme seems to be about self-sabotage, a person -- or two people -- who have convinced themselves they aren't cut out to let their hearts rule their heads ("You say too late to start, got your heart in a headlock"), which works as a running Johnlock theme. There are little phrases that remind me of John and Sherlock's first meeting ("throw a stranger an unexpected smile". And then John being at a loss how to be anything but a soldier -- "with big intention, still posted at your station" -- transforming into something joyful in that crazy rooftop chase when he first jumps after Sherlock and forgets his limp: "still going on about the day you should have flied.")
The song's bridge is perfect for a Mycroft-Sherlock interlude ("You've been walking, you've been hiding, and you look half-dead half the time. Monitoring you, like machines do, you've still got it, I'm just keeping an eye"). The sound of a pulse monitor flat-lining in the middle of the song before the big instrumental kicks in would work perfectly with the whole Mary shooting him business. I don't know, I just see lots of story hooks in these lyrics, and it seems right for the frustration of an unrealized love story that ends with a tentative try at believing that a new start is possible after all.
The second part of your question was about songs that I associate with particular characters despite not being tempted to vid with them. This can happen for a lot of different reasons -- maybe it's a song I associate with the character because someone else already made a great vid for them with it! Or maybe it's a song where the lyrics are right but the sound/tone is wrong for source material, or maybe there's one perfect verse but the rest of the song doesn't work nearly as well. Most often, though, it happens when there's a song focused heavily on emotions/interiority that perfectly matches my headcanon for a character but doesn't really lend itself to any specific story elements from the source material the character is in. That makes it hard to storyboard a visual narrative to go along with the song. So, to give a few examples...
This is a song I will forever associate with Sherlock because humansrsuperior made a wonderful vid with it over a decade ago (which has long since vanished from the internet): Hi by Psapp. ("Compulsive: every page I turn I want more. I never know the next thing in store, 'cause you excite me like a locked door does.")
Here is a Sherlock song where the lyrics are right but the sound is (in my opinion) not an easy match with the source material: Curses by The Crane Wives.
And for those headcanon songs that express a character's interior life/emotional truth vividly but are hard to visually storyboard, the two at the top of my list are love songs for my two favorites from SPN, Dean and Cas. Dean's song is a cover of A Modern Leper by Julien Baker. ("And is that you in front of me, coming back for even more of exactly the same? You must be a masochist, to love a modern leper on his last leg.") And Cas's is Two by Sleeping At Last. ("I just want to love you, to love you, to love you well. I just want to learn how, somehow, to be loved myself....I will love you without a single string attached.") Both a perfect summation of, like, 10,000 fics, but neither easy to vid with footage from the show itself.
And to conclude on a Holmesian note, for me one of those headcanon 'this is what he's like on the inside' songs for BBC Sherlock is All I Really Want (Acoustic) by Alanis Morissette.

hello animatedjen!! I hope your day has been beautiful 🧡 I've recently moved into an apartment and have decided to get a gaming monitor for my PS5, so I can game at my desk and save some space while still enjoying photo mode sessions. if I remember correctly you play Jedi on PC, so maybe my question for you isn't relevant, but is there a monitor you use & like or would recommend for this purpose? I know these things are expensive and you seemed like a good person to ask about getting my investment right the first time around! especially since I would also use it for professional photo & video editing on occasion, and I know that's relevant to your career field as well. any advice you have on making a flexible set up would be so appreciated! thank you in advance!! I hope this question isn't too bothersome! P.S. I want you to know that you're a micro celebrity amongst my coworker friends because they see your photo mode shots rotate as my desktop wallpapers all day every day haha 😅
Tumblr media
Congrats on the apartment!! And I'm very honored to be your work desktop wallpaper 💛 Respawn should be giving you a referral bonus!
Right now I'm using a Gigabyte QHD 34" ultrawide gaming monitor I got secondhand. Good specs for the price, but it's not super color accurate when compared to my Macbook retina screen - it could be calibrated more via software or a physical tool, but for now I use the monitor for gaming, general life stuff, and pre-color editing. I have a DP cable for the PC and HDMI for the Macbook or PS5, so it's easy to switch between devices.
The ultrawide aspect ratio also means I crop my photomode shots to 16:9 to post on socials, since 21:9 photos are very skinny (see above) and people often scroll Tumblr on their small, vertically-oriented phone screens. On the plus side, it's great for video editing since I can see more of the timeline at once. And no black bars during Jedi Survivor cutscenes!
Tumblr media
You'll have to decide your budget and what specs are most important to you for photo/video work - I'd recommend a screen somewhere between 24" and 34", with QHD (2K) or UHD (4K) resolution. A higher refresh rate (at least 60hz, if not 120/144/240hz) helps for gaming and video with higher framerates. Color accuracy is tricky, but if you're not creating high-end photo prints or color grading for Netflix, something good (but not perfect) will be just fine. Some monitors will be better for gaming, and some better for photo/video editing, so decide which one to prioritize.
I've seen ASUS ProArt, Dell UltraSharp, and BenQ monitors recommended when I've shopped around before, but I skew towards non-gamer, Mac-friendly tech since more of my client work is on that system and the Jedi stuff is (sadly) not my paid job (yet). But if any other gamer/creative professionals want to drop recs in the comments, y'all probably know more than I do! 🙌
Thanks for the ask and sorry I can't be more helpful. Look forward to seeing the photomode shots from your new monitor :)

How do you get such nice shots in captura? I wanna get better at it could you share some tips? Been trying to figure it out but I admit I'm not the most knowledgeable in photography etc.
Well.... It's a bit of a complicated process and it relies very very much on personal preference. Much like with any type of art there are different styles that each individual artist will gravitate toward. I can only show you how I do things, so I'd recommend asking other Captura folks on here about their own styles to see where our processes and preferences differ.
I'll also include some extremely helpful videos at the bottom, they go extremely in depth as to best practices and technical exploits.
Alright, lets get started with the background stuff... the tools! ReShade: Shader injection, a MUST if you want to take dynamic and customized captura without using a program like Photoshop to do everything in post.
SRWE: Simple Runtime Window Editor.... the god among programs... It's an upscaler, allowing you to increase the resolution of the game beyond the bounds of your monitor. It's how I was able to get 15K panoramas at one point in time.
Any image editing software. Since I rely mainly on compositing to get the lighting I do, I need something to overlay and mesh the images with. I use GIMP cuz it's free, but even Microsoft Paint will work as soon as it add the ability to layer images.
Those are the tools... what about the tactics?
Well, I generally prefer moodier shots with the Warframe being the central focus (though, that's also the side effect of me cropping the image). Just a note! Moody doesn't mean dark, moody is the enigmatic space between dark and light where there is more dark than light... but there's still a good amount of light to be had. Occasionally you can have overexposure in a moody shot even.
Important to note, the overall exposure level of the environment, even is the scene lighting is low, will effect how brightly your Warframe can be lit. Both the Scene Light and Exposure sliders need to be fine-tuned otherwise you won't be able to light your Warframe at all.
Now, for shot composition I prefer low angles with either a cluttered but familiar/recognizable background, or a simple but abstract background. The Subject, be it a Warframe, an enemy, or an NPC, reside in the center with their feet out of shot.
Like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each of these shots also demonstrate well the way I like to pose my subjects: Symmetry and.... not... not symmetry. The official term for this is Contrapposto, which is Italian for Counterpoise. Basically, even though the Wisp is sedentary, her body is still giving off the impression of movement based on how her waist is curving and hips are tilted, forming a loose 'S' shape. There's a handful of animation sets, Khora (Urushu) Noble, Mesa Noble, and Wisp Noble are excellent for this.
Some examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But... what about the lighting? This is where things get technical. So, the standard Captura's three-point lighting system is generally inadequate at properly lighting the entire Warframe. This is where compositing enters the picture, in a very literal sense. Each of these shots, shown above, are composites of between two and four separate images, each with different lighting angles. I actually have an example I made for an earlier explanation made already (thank goodness)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Getting the different lighting angles is really simple, just rotate the 3-way lighting without moving the camera. Then you overlay them in some photo editing software and just start going layer by layer, erasing bits of the topmost layer to reveal your desired highlights or shadows from the shot underneath.
Don't feel obligated to do this compositing process though! Sometimes the 3-way lighting works perfectly well for a shot or environment, don't feel obligated to complicate this process.
And this segues in nicely to the final part of the shot-making process, post-processing and fog layers.
Now, fog layers are important to the overall appearance and vibe of my Captura. They add texture the image that the game doesn't impart naturally, removing large swathes of solid color from the background and foreground. An added bonus is that the added texture makes the image look somewhat better (imo) when compressed, or when viewed at lower resolutions.
The same image with and without Fog
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This shot contains two individual fog layers, one in the foreground, washing out the foliage, giving the general uniformity of it texture and implied depth, it also serves to cover up the manual blurring I did (poorly) around his legs. Then there's the background Fog, which is the deeper blue you see in the sky. It adds a more dynamic air to the generally dour set of greys. And, again, the fog is just something I personally like to add, even if it doesn't serve a practical purpose in a shot. No shade if someone feels the fog ruins the shot, I almost always keep a fog-free version about.
After the fog is added, blended, and blurred slightly, I will apply a few gentle blurring filters to remove any jarring or jagged pixelation from the shot, giving the Frame a somewhat smoother appearance and reducing the file-size dramatically.
That's just how I do it though, it's not a particularly popular style, but it's how I do it and how I love to do it! :3 Remember to ask around, I'm sure there's lotsa Captura Artists out there willing to explain their methods and processes.
Helpful vids! How to Captura by Vash Cowaii Hotsampling in Warframe for High Res Shots by PurpleFlurp
good luck, and happy snapping!

What Is Aerial Surveying and How Does It Work?
Introduction to Aerial Surveying
Aerial surveying is a powerful technique used to collect geographic and spatial data from an elevated perspective, typically with the help of drones, aircraft, or satellites. It allows professionals in various industries to obtain detailed, high-resolution images and measurements of the Earth's surface. This method is widely adopted in sectors such as construction, agriculture, mining, infrastructure planning, and environmental monitoring.
By capturing data from above, aerial surveying provides a fast, accurate, and cost-effective solution for mapping large or difficult-to-reach areas. In Australia, where expansive terrain and remote locations are common, this technology plays a critical role in improving project efficiency and data reliability.
Tumblr media
How Aerial Surveying Works
Aerial surveying involves collecting imagery and data from the air using specialised equipment mounted on aerial platforms. These platforms can include:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones
Fixed-wing aircraft
Helicopters
Satellites
Sensors such as cameras, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), multispectral sensors, and thermal imagers are used to capture specific types of data. The choice of sensor depends on the application and the desired output.
Once the raw data is collected, it is processed using photogrammetry software and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. This data is then converted into accurate digital maps, 3D models, topographic surveys, and other valuable outputs.
Key Components of Aerial Surveying
Data Acquisition The first step in aerial surveying is flight planning. Routes and altitudes are calculated to ensure optimal coverage and resolution. The aircraft or drone flies over the area while capturing overlapping images or sensor readings.
Georeferencing Georeferencing is essential for aligning the captured data with real-world coordinates. GPS systems and ground control points (GCPs) are used to enhance the spatial accuracy of the results.
Data Processing Advanced software solutions process the raw data, generating orthomosaic images, digital elevation models (DEMs), and 3D reconstructions. This step ensures precision, clarity, and usability.
Data Analysis and Reporting After processing, the data is analysed to extract actionable insights. Professionals use the final outputs for planning, monitoring, and decision-making in various projects.
Applications of Aerial Surveying in Australia
The diverse landscape and vast land areas in Australia make aerial surveying particularly beneficial. Some common applications include:
Mining and Quarrying: Monitoring site changes, calculating stockpile volumes, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Agriculture: Assessing crop health, irrigation efficiency, and soil variation using multispectral data.
Construction and Infrastructure: Surveying large construction sites, road alignments, and urban planning projects.
Environmental Studies: Tracking vegetation cover, mapping wetlands, and assessing the impact of natural disasters like bushfires or floods.
Land Development: Supporting subdivision planning, boundary determination, and topographical mapping.
Advantages of Aerial Surveying
The advantages of using aerial surveying over traditional ground-based methods are numerous:
Time Efficiency: Large areas can be surveyed in a fraction of the time.
Cost-Effective: Reduced manpower and quicker data collection lead to lower operational costs.
High Accuracy: When properly georeferenced, aerial surveying delivers precise and reliable data.
Safety: Eliminates the need to access hazardous or remote terrains on foot.
Versatility: Suitable for various industries and adaptable to multiple environmental conditions.
