Snow blankets the ground in the early hours of the day, undisturbed save the small foot prints of crows that call hoarsely from the trees. In the distance the calls of Lycans ring out, ever searching for fresh prey to exert their endless fury on.

Inside the cave it's quiet, light from torches bouncing off the walls and causing the space to be warm and inviting. In the far back is a nest of blankets, decorated with trinkets that shimmer in the firelight.

As if sensing that they are being watched, a figure under the blankets shifts, and a head of inky black hair pops out. Chestnut brown eyes peek through the mane of hair, peering at those who intrude on this little sanctuary from the Village.

New Naruto blog? Fresh meat! What if someone signed a summoning contract but instead of something cool like snakes or crows, they got really aggressive geese. Horrible little geese. How would characters react to you just having an entire GANG of geese following you around? 🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿

Welcome! This request is completely unhinged and I had far too much fun while writing it. Love it. I've gone with a mixed bag of characters.🌸

Characters: Kakashi Hatake, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Shikamaru Nara, Sakura Haruno, Tsunade Senju

It's a beautiful day in Konoha and you are a horrible little goose summons...

Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi will be the first to tell you that a summoning contract is one of the most useful tools a shinobi can have. Most of the greatest shinobi have one, and he's no exception.

He's lost count of the amount of sticky situations where his ninken have managed to give him the edge. Just ask Pakkun—he loves to talk about all the times his exploits have saved the day.

So when Kakashi hears you proudly declare that you too have a summoning contract, he's curious to see it. He's of the opinion that a person's summoning animal is a reflection of their personality. Almost like a ninja zodiac.

So imagine his surprise (and dismay) when you bite your thumb and are suddenly surrounded by two dozen honking, hissing, milling geese.

"...geese!?"

"Yup."

"Are you serious?" he asks, sounding rather strained. It's rare to see Kakashi off balance, but a flock of pissy geese will do it.

"What, you don't think my geese can match up to your ninken, Hatake?"

Kakashi scoops up several of his large ninken (and Pakkun), holding them like oversized stuffed animals. "Keep those evil things away from my dogs."

Naruto Uzumaki

Considering that Naruto summons toads, he doesn't exactly have the coolest summoning contract either, but he wonders why you're so cagey about yours. Sure, it's normal for shinobi to keep quiet about their techniques in order to have the upper hand, but you're allies, right?

"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon! Show me, show me! I promise I won't laugh!"

He has absolutely no intention of keeping that promise if your summons is like, dung beetles or something.

Even Naruto isn't prepared for what waddles out of the puff of smoke created by your Summoning Jutsu.

He lets out a startled guffaw, blue eyes threatening to pop out of his head, then doubles over in a fit of raucous laughter.

"What the hell!? Geese—ow! Agh! Get them off!"

His laughter soon dies when the geese start to bite him, enraged by his hideous orange-and-black jumpsuit and his mockery.

Rage, geese, rage!

Sasuke Uchiha

Sasuke didn't ask what summons you have, because he doesn't really care. He himself has both snake and hawks summons, which are arguably pretty cool.

Still, on the off chance you do end up using a Summoning Jutsu around him, he's mildly surprised to hear a low hiss issue from the cloud of smoke before it dissipates. Are you a snake summoner too?

Wait. Was that a...honk?

The smoke clears to unveil a small army of angry little geese—orange beaks, beady little eyes, plump, feathery white bodies, slapping feet. Just honest-to-the-gods geese, like you've raided a farmyard. His eyebrow twitches.

"I'm beginning to reconsider our acquaintance."

"Don't you mean friendship."

"Definitely not now. Not after this. Is this some kind of joke?"

"Don't underestimate my murder geese, Uchiha. Geese, arm yourselves!"

Suddenly every single goose has a kunai clutched in their beak, their beady little eyes glowing red with a deep, murderous rage.

"Attack!"

Sasuke is forced to swifty re-evaluate his assessment of how effective an army of geese can be.

Shikamaru Nara

Shikamaru has a sixth sense for anything that's troublesome, and that sense activates the moment you smile and lift your thumb toward your mouth, ready to bite down and activate your Summoning Jutsu. The hairs on the back of his neck stand up and he knows shit is about to hit the fan.

His unease is justified the second he sees your waddling horde of honking demons. Without hesitation, he activates his Kagemane no Jutsu and traps your entire flock before they can attack him, a look of resignation on his face.

"I should have known you'd go for something eccentric. You know you're going to get a stupid nickname like the 'Goose-nin', right?"

He holds the geese trapped until you dismiss them, releasing his hand seal in order to pinch the bridge of his nose.

Despite himself, he is a little curious.

"Are they effective in battle?"

"Yeah, I'll show you. We can attack Sasuke again."

"Troublesome, but I might enjoy watching that..."

Sakura Haruno

Sakura is kind of appalled. All the options you had for a summoning contract, and you went for a gaggle of vicious geese?

Not that she has a leg to stand on, since she is a summoner of slugs. Slug summoner. Slime queen.

She keeps a safe distance from them, almost as if she can feel the rage and the fury boiling up in them, the murderous intent rolling off of the feathery little bastards.

Wise move, Sakura, wise move.

"So you can't summon a single one? It's always a flock?" she asks, looking disturbed.

"Yeah, unless I summon the Mother Goose, but I can't do that without causing extensive property damage. So I stick to my Murder Gaggle."

"Murder Gaggle!? Wait, are those kunai in their beaks?!"

Tsunade Senju

Naturally, when the Hokage hears some concerning rumours about your summoning contract, she has you brought to her office to confirm whether or not those rumours are true.

"So." Tsunade's golden eyes scrutinise you over her steepled fingers, her tone serious, commanding. "Tell me about these...geese."

"Oh, sure, let me show you."

"No! Don't summon them in here—!"

Too late. The Hokage's office is suddenly swarmed with dozens of confused, angry geese, squabbling and honking threateningly at anything that moves.

Tonton runs, squealing, to throw herself into the safety of Tsunade's arms.

"So the rumours are true," Tsunade says, feeling as though she needs a stiff drink. "I'll have to take into consideration how this 'Murder Gaggle', as you insist on calling them, can be used for the benefit of the village."

She pauses, tapping her chin.

"Would it be too harsh to unleash them during the Chuunin Exams?"

You hummed and nodded your head in approval at his words. He was boosting your ego with that compliment!

⇢ ˗ˏˋ But other than that, you both like to soar the sky together. Hermes especially likes to bump into you on purpose whilst in the sky. He wants to catch you off guard. This usually ends up in you arguing with him and fighting in the sky like actual birds.

“Hermes, stop that!”

“Ugh! You’re ridiculous!”

Angeal: Uses his chocobo as transport for sustainability, but it's more than that. He makes sure the chocobo is well-fed, rested, and never overburdened, pampers the chocobo and mothers the heck out of it, treating it like his own kid, makes sure the chocobo feels loved and valued. He goes as far as hosting chocobo play dates with Genesis and his chocobo, which Angeal's chocobo doesn't like because Genesis' chocobo is a spoiled, evil little creature.

Genesis: His chocobo is a pampered showpiece, a great scarlet bird bedecked in expensive accessories, probably named Phoenix, used primarily for racing and winning awards. Genesis loves to brag about Phoenix and all the awards he's won, and how elegant and sophisticated it—"NO, NO, PHOENIX! DO NOT ROLL AROUND IN MUD!"

Cloud: He'd have a great black chocobo, probably named something that alludes to Norse mythology, like 'Gullinkambi,' after one of the three roosters whose crowing is foretold to signify the beginning of the events of Ragnarök. He'd share a deep bond with his chocobo and use it not only for transportation but also for racing. Since they're very good at it, they've won lots of awards.

Zack: His chocobo is as bright and energetic as he is—a tall, golden bird that Zack had to resist naming "Cloud," fearing that the real Cloud might kill him for it. It's a lovable companion that Zack showers with affection and attention. Zack is definitely the type to take his chocobo (probably named something like Thrasher or Ripper despite buying it playful accessories like cowboy hats and sunglasses) everywhere with him. He protests with "What do you mean my buddy can't come in here? He’s just as much a paying customer as everyone else." Zack has tried to disguise his chocobo as a human on more than one occasion.

Sephiroth: He has a beautiful silver chocobo he's named something endearing like "Nova." Shinra has attempted to get him to race it for more propaganda and another revenue stream, but Sephiroth refuses. It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate chocobo racing as a sport—he does—but the idea of subjecting Nova to that environment doesn’t sit well with him. He uses his chocobo primarily for transportation, ensuring Nova gets plenty of time outdoors and experiences more of the planet than just the stables at the Shinra HQ.

The times when Sephiroth feels the most free are when he and Nova are alone in the grasslands, where they can roam freely and feel as if they can go anywhere and do anything. But Sephiroth knows Shinra well and understands that whatever he grows too attached to will eventually be taken away. So he makes the difficult decision to let Nova go one day, taking it to a place where it can be with other chocobos and live a happier life than Sephiroth could offer in his confined space.

The inner circle believes that everyone down there is evil and vile but that can't be true, can't it? If someone like Mor came from there and was a dreamer, that means there are more dreamers. There are innocent women and children who suffer in the court of nightmares but Rhysand and his inner circle leaves them to rot. Mor hasn't done anything for the women and she left centuries ago.

You want to know why I said they would like Jim Crow? It's because of shit like that. People were denied shelter, service, entertainment, get opportunities, etc. That's exactly what Rhysand said about anyone from Hewn City coming into Velaris. They had to deal with Rhysand coming down to Hewn City only to torment them so more in their miserable lives. That little stunt Feysand did in ACOMAF was straight up disgusting. Getting freaky in front of your people? Can you imagine the women seeing that? That Rhysand is acting like this with his lady? They also had to watch Rhysand break Keir's arm for calling Feyre a whore which is well deserved but Rhys doing that but not helping the women who had suffered at the hands of men for many years? Some high lord he is. Here's the racism part I was talking about:

But ALSO you've sent this ask at the exact minute in the middle of me typing about being salty with the Wiki fsdhhsd Are we in sync? Like, I was double-checking Wiki for something and wanted to complain about this bit:

For starters; the 'Clutch' type of rings increase magical, lightning, fire and dark damage indiscriminatory. So, they increase all kinds of nonphysical damage known to people at the DS2 times: magic, miracles, pyromancy and hexes! And they ALL mention Velka(?):

Singling out Dark version in particular in the Wiki's page will of course create a certain impression, but really! Being indiscriminatory is Velka's whole thing!

The context is also different! Caitha was believed to be evil! Maybe because of her affiliation with darkness, maybe because she leans towards grief and tragedy (and "tears are the most beautiful near death"), maybe both!

Meanwhile, Clutch Rings just say that whereas origin of the ring is not known the shape suggests an evil deity! Which is kind of fair by internal logic to call Velka that for merely being associated with the Occult and Sin; it is the same setting that calls Priscilla 'an abomination and an enemy to all living' despite her being one of the very few objectively likeable people in Dark Souls world! Fromsoft used to use description that follow perspectives of people IN the setting rather than "death of the author" more often!

Now, as for the Scythe part:

These are the symbols 忌み they're talking about! But also, if you examine several other descriptions:

As you can see, these symbols do not have a specific connotation with the crow monsters! This is just a generic term for those who are loathed within this setting and whom nobody commonly wants to do anything with!

Velka was never known to be a patron saint of those who everyone rejected, her thing is to take justified revenge on the behalf of those done unfairly and it can include anyone, not just the Bullied Kids of the setting! On the other hand, Caitha is specifically known to be compassionate and seek to comfort those in crisis and pain! At the same time, Caitha herself is connected with death and dragons, making her have resemblance (if not relation) to Priscilla! I feel like if there was a clear intention from the devs, it is most likely to imply that Gael would get easily confused and swayed by similarities?

Like I know you guys have confirmation bias to prove that Caitha is not a real character of her own, but come on ;-; I will pretend that the determination to have one less interesting female character in the setting is valid (good joke right Crow? XDDDD), but some of the "proofs" of that theory are so obviously picked with a clear wish to prove something rather than to get to the bottom of the issue!

Hi, I'm DK and this blog is mostly full of me talking about the Six of Crows and the rest of the Grishaverse! (and I'm also on AO3 as she_posts_nerdy_stuff)

It's occurred to me recently that I never did an intro post and also I'm just generally feeling that things over here are super disorganised so I've gone through all of my posts since 2022 (this was not a quick task you guys omg) and done my best to organise everything into tags so that you can access them all from here! Novyi Zem will back Shu Han, because they still think their trade ambassador was killed by the Kerch in what was actually Shu Han's last attempt to start a war over here, Fjerda will back Kerch, refugees will flee to the Wandering Isle and their economy won't be able to withstand it, and meanwhile I will remain exactly where I am and get drunk toasting to the end of the world. Portrait of a Dead Girl

This fic is completely inspired by The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrel, which is a work of historical fiction based on the real lives of Duchess Lucrezia d'Este (née de' Medici) and Duke Alfonso ii d'Este of Ferrara. You don't need any prior knowledge of The Marriage Portrait or history to read and enjoy this fic, but know that my writing is very much going to mimic that of O'Farrel in format and although I'm hoping to write the story in my personal usual writing style I will definitely be borrowing a lot of my descriptors, symbols, and so on and so forth from O'Farrel - there will be some of mine too though :)

In the slums of the Warehouse District, Kaz and Inej are struggling their way through a seemingly unending winter. Wrapped up in a stranger's overcomplicated marriage contract that he is convinced is key to solving the merciless weather, Kaz remains busy and distracted for days on end, putting everything else at risk. So when a storm ravages the city and sweeps Inej into danger, the offer of safety, food, and a place to stay is an overwhelming one - no matter the cost. Terrified of mounting threats, Inej signs a contract - not knowing she would land herself trapped at the Menagerie. Kaz signs a contract that states if he can walk all the way through the city and back to the Warehouse District with Inej behind him, never looking back at her, they will both go free. But this is the Barrel, the darkest part of the city where the rules of physics can change with the stroke of a pen; the journey back will not be the same as journey there… * This is a Hadestown-inspired reimagining of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, casting Kaz and Inej as our main characters and heavily featuring our beloved Crows, set in an alternate version of the Grishaverse with a different magic system based entirely on contracts.

okay okay okay so NEW blog canon for my jon regarding as the crow flies

i. this took place earlier in my jon's timeline in a bid to further fund different forms of fear toxin, working for oswald to have higher standard labs, equipment, ingredients. he was also messing with shit on the side, which is how linda had research for carrying out this experiment on him. he was messing with real weird biochemistry shit.

ii. "scarebeast" is just meta talk to refer to what he transformed into. he calls it "the creature" / "frii.tawa's creature" because we love frankens.tein references in the club

iii. the transformation was temporary in my canon, only lasting as long as they were working together. i know it's supposed to be a genetics thing but i just don't like jon turning into it in my own iteration of him, idk! feels too much for my jon. i cannot elaborate further.

iv. he has lasting side effects that are essentially some of fright's abilities as shown in the comics: enhanced agility, strength, stamina, harder to kill. by default, he has some of these abilities at all times, but he isn't at full capacity unless his adrenaline has kicked in. so mostly fights with batm.an! this is why he can go toe-to-toe with him. versus what i previously said, he's much more willing to fight the bat. outside of that, he can also force this response if he huffs fear gas lol.

v. when i say different capacities for abilities, i mean along the lines of like. default he can very well man-handle people and throw or take a good punch, can get stabbed and is fine (also makes it slightly more reasonable he stabbed himself to get artemis's attention lmao). but adrenaline kicks in? survives getting shot multiple times in vital spots, doesn't feel it too much, can get up and walk around afterward to get himself to safety. still has to worry about bleeding out, so he's fleeing. with strength: could lift a car half-way up and drag it around (CANNOT actually pick it up or throw it or anything). so. stronger, hopefully not too OP. also makes it fun because people can beat him up more without too severe of consequences :)

vi. he's real fucked up about turning into a giant monster and killing a bunch of people. not good for how he already demonizes himself and considers himself evil. he tries to focus on them being criminals, but. yeah. it also contributes to some derealization and depersonalization - mans turned into a big creature and feels inhuman at times. feels like this can't be reality. generally just tries not to think about these events. blocking it out a little. doesn't really use his abilities casually too much because it contributes to these feelings and makes him remember what happened.

vii. besides becky, he is also obsessed with fright. more of a hate-obsession. she betrayed him and took away his autonomy. ironic given he does this to people all the time by experimenting on them. he is not completely unaware of the hypocrisy and struggles with that too. would LOVE if someone rp'd her because that would be a complicated... whatever. eyezooms at the dash.

viii. the creature is also part of why fear gas doesn't really affect him the same. pre-scarebeast, his costumes incorporated gas masks (sort of like the fear state costume mixed with salecrow). he no longer bothers with a gas mask. by the time he uses his fear gas on others in any way, he's already tested it on himself a bunch to gain tolerance, which happens very quickly. otherwise, it's just getting him high on amphetamines and creates an adrenaline rush.
