When Sunwoo said he needed help, he truly meant it. A few weeks into the new quarter, you find yourself hustling in the lab in between your class schedule. You do enjoy it though, and you find that you still have time to carve out for your friends and nights out. But, you do feel your workload slowly increasing just because Sunwoo is trying to make significant progress with his project— a project that you hope to build off if you were to fully join Professor Choi's lab. A project that would hopefully get your name on another published paper, too. And, you weren't gonna lie, you wanted to do your best and work extra hard because you needed Professor Choi to see that you fit perfectly in his lab. You needed to show him that this wasn't any ordinary research work to you and that you weren't just winging your time here, especially after he gave you that friendly but stern pep talk during your kick-off meeting with him, Belle and Sunwoo.
—FLASHBACK
"Hey." Professor Choi says while sitting in his chair. The three of you walk in, with Sunwoo plopping himself down on his couch, and you and Belle sitting at the two seats in front of his desk. "How's everyone doing?" He asks while typing away, huge Mac screen taking up the corner of his desk with his laptop connected on a laptop stand.
"Good!" You all say in your own ways.
"How about you, Professor Choi?" Sunwoo leans back onto the couch.
"Mm." He hums. "Good as can be, I guess. Can't complain." He chuckles, now fully shifting his attention to you three. "So! How'd the talk go?"
"Well, I think Y/N would work well with my project. There's so many avenues she could piggyback off of if she joins the lab afterwards that'll help contribute to a lot of the dynamic foraging, brain-wide neural dynamics work we've been doing." You watch as Professor Choi nods in agreement, now looking at you and Belle.
"She could also help with the lab-wide project I've been heading and some other 2-photon and KCR work."
"Sounds good with me. What about you, Y/N?" He leans onto his desk, eyes glued on you while his hands are clasped together. You lick your lips and nod, nervous that all the attention is on you especially from Professor Choi. You feel like he's burning holes into you, and you can't help but feel incredibly intimidated.
"Yeah, that sounds awesome. I'm on board with Sunwoo and Belle's plans. I'm excited to dive in." He smiles at you.
"Cool. I think we'll get some great work done during your rotation." He turns to Sunwoo. "Sunwoo, can I trust you to take care of Y/N's badge access and getting her set up with everything she needs?"
"For sure!"
"Thanks." Professor Choi stands. "And just cause I have to lay this out there, there are some expectations I hold for the people in my lab— regardless if you're a rotation student, postdoc, undergrad, staff. It doesn't matter. I expect the highest performance out of everybody, and I want my people to succeed no matter how long it takes. I expect my people to do nothing but the best and I need that to show in everything you do. Presentations. Data. Papers. Everything. I don't want anyone to settle for less than that, and you have my support every step of the way."
"Of course, noted."
"We have lab meetings every Monday at 9am up on the third floor of the south wing. I'll get you on the schedule so you can do your rotation update towards the end of the quarter."
"Journal club!" Sunwoo says, making Professor Choi laugh. "One of us!"
"Yeah, we'll get you to do a journal club presentation too." He tucks his hands in his pockets.
"Professor Choi gets us free hot breakfast for lab meetings." Belle puts her hand on your arm as you all stand and start to get ready to leave. "It's so good." You giggle.
"So, all good? We're all onboard?" You three turn to Professor Choi and nod. "Nice. Welcome to the lab, Y/N." He flashes you a smile that only you catch, a look that only you see. Like it was meant to be that way.
Your time in Professor Choi's lab will be an interesting one.
—END
"Hey." You pull out a seat and plop onto the chair, sipping on the drink you just ordered.
"Hey pretty!" Eunchae giggles, while Felix, Jiung and Jurin wave.
"Where have you been?" Felix asks, poking at your bicep.
"Shuffling between class and lab." You let out a breath, bottom lip poking out into a pout.
"She's rotating in Professor Choi's lab." Jiung looks at Jurin.
"San?" You nod. "Damn, goodluck!" Jurin chimes in and you shake your head. "He's a hottie."
"Here we go." Felix snorts.
"I mean, are we wrong?" She looks at him and playfully nudges his side, causing him to groan in response.
"I never said you were wrong!" Eunchae giggles at his pained response. "That's just the hot topic on campus. Him and his friends."
"So hot. They deserve to be the talk on campus." Eunchae rests her chin on the palm of her hand. "How has it been in his lab?"
"It's been good! Just really fucking busy. Sunwoo is like.. at the peak of his project. He'll probably try to submit his paper within the year or something if all goes well."
"Fun times." Jiung looks at you while sipping on his smoothie. "You going back to lab after?"
"Yup!"
"I gotta head back, too." Felix says.
"Same. I gotta run my gels." Eunchae adds.
"What about you?"
"Not today." Jiung responds. "I have a paper I need to start already for one of my classes. I've just been trying to troubleshoot some of the lasers in the lab for the other Professor Choi so I'm not entirely busy yet." You nod, checking your apple watch to peep the time. "Are you guys gonna be able to catch dinner later?"
"I should be."
"Yeah, same."
"Mm. I dunno." You tilt your head. "You can probably go without me and I'll catch up if I can."
"Sheesh, really putting you to work already."
"Yup." You sigh, finishing up your drink and your snack box full of cheese, grapes and crackers. "Anyway, I gotta get going. I told Sunwoo I'd try and fix our behavior rig today so we can start utilizing it soon."
"Text us if you'll be able to join dinner and we'll wait!" Jurin yells before you wave them off and start making your way back to the Harvey Center to finish up your tasks in lab. Part of you really wanted to stay with your friends and hang out for the rest of the afternoon, but you had promised Sunwoo you'd take the time to fix the behavior rig he had been working on for the past month. He just hasn't had the bandwidth to focus on it lately, so having you is tremendous help for him.
When you get to the lab, there's still quite a few people lingering around in the office area in the basement, surprisingly. You pop over to their desks for small talk, getting to know the people in the lab and the projects they're working on. Most are situated at their desks, analyzing their data and coding between two monitor screens. Everyone's equally nice and passionate about what they do, it makes the environment less stressful knowing it's collaborative and engaging instead of being in a competitive nature. Belle pulls you aside to get your help just as Sunwoo is packing up for the day and thanking you for your help with the behavior rig. She takes about an hour or so of your time, giving you a quick rundown of the procedures she's working on and what you could help with in the next few weeks. It's after your time with Belle that you finally get to sit down at your desk and focus on the rig sitting on top of it. You don't think it'll take much time, and you feel like you'll actually be able to catch dinner with your friends.
Until you realize how difficult it is get everything situated on the breadboard properly.
Tumblr media
San hums as he walks through the cold air, pacing towards the Harvey Center to get to his office. He's just had a good workout at the faculty lounge, and he doesn't expect too many people [if any] to be lingering around in the open office space of the lab. He knows people are cooped up in their own laser or behavior rooms right now, and it's not even the first time he'll be strolling in casual clothes. He tries to keep himself clean and pressed down, but he too, has his days where he just wants to head to work in some jeans. A tshirt. Hoodie.
Right now, the cold is pricking his skin because he's in a black Nike dry fit shirt and sweats. He's running to the office to finish up a few last minute things before heading home and relaxing. As expected, the hallway feels eerily quiet. He assumes there could be one or two people locked away in the rooms, but he won't bother. When he gets into the office space, he doesn't see anyone in particular until he turns the corner towards his office and finds you sitting at your desk in the corner. The computer screen is pretty bright, and you've got your hands tied with a rig.
He definitely wasn't expecting you to be here.
"Fuuuck." He hears you slightly whine when the small allen wrench in your hand slips and tumbles to the floor, followed by a few screws sitting on your desk.
"Hey Y/N, you okay?" San asks, dropping his duffle bag right in front of his office door before slowly walking over to you. You look up in surprise, eyes quickly scanning Professor Choi in his casual outfit. You're stunned at how good he looks in something so simple, how big and defined his arms are in that tight shirt; he looks so good you almost forget to respond.
He sure as hell catches on though, a tiny smirk growing at the corner of his lips.
"Oh, yeah. I'm trying to unscrew this but Sunwoo's got it in there tightly. I'm afraid I'm weak." He laughs and shakes his head.
"Nah. You're not weak." He picks up the allen wrench from the floor. "Which one?"
"This." You point. "And this too, while you're at it." He chuckles.
"You got it, boss." San angles himself closer to you, face only inches away from yours when he dips to get a better look. You watch as his arm muscles flex when he gets the wrench in there and starts undoing the screw, loosening it in a matter of seconds. "I'll let you do the rest." He moves onto the next and loosens it shortly after. When he finishes, his face is only inches away from yours and he keeps a hold there. He's looking at you again, really looking at you, and you feel the heat rise to your cheeks. You're not sure what else to do besides nibble on your bottom lip.
"Thank you." You manage to choke out. He gives you a soft smile before handing you the allen wrench and standing fully upright.
"You didn't hurt yourself, did you?"
"Um, no. I didn't." San looks at your hand a little further and notices the fresh scratch near your pinky— probably due to your hand slipping from the force, scratching it against one of the mounts sitting on the board.
"I didn't expect you to lie to me so quickly." He teases, slight whine in his tone while he clicks his teeth. "Can I see?" You show him your hand. "Come to my office, got some ointment for it." He nods towards his door and leads the way. San could damn well show you to the lab's first aid kit down the hall, but his office is much closer and he'd feel a bit better than just sending you off to fend for yourself.
"Professor Choi, I can just find the—" Before you can finish your sentence, he's already swinging his door open and holding it open for you.
"It's much quicker than heading down the hall to the first aid kit." He laughs a bit. You give him a tiny smile as you brush past and walk into his office, feeling a bit awkward being in his private space for something as little as a cut. You fiddle with your fingers as he places his duffle bag down onto the couch before grabbing the first aid kit in one of the drawers near his desk. He grabs a small pack of ointment and a bandaid, approaching you in the middle of the room. "Mind if I..?"
"Not at all." You leave out your hand for Professor Choi to take and he gently tugs it closer. He applies the ointment on your scab, dabbing it lightly across the surface before grabbing the bandaid and placing it on top.
"There."
"Thank you, Professor Choi."
"You're welcome. Be careful next time. Make sure Sunwoo does the heavy lifting."
"I know. He's good help. I just figured I'd help him get a head start." San gives you a small smile. "Mind if I ask? What're you doing here later in the evening?"
"Sometimes, I just stay to get my work done. Can't always rely on my home office to keep me productive." He chuckles. "Plus, I get my workouts in at the faculty lounge." You nod.
"I see."
"How long have you been in the lab today?"
"I've been in and out in between classes."
"You haven't eaten dinner?"
"Nope. Dining hall doesn't close until 9pm, though." San looks at the time on his computer.
"Which is getting pretty close. You should wrap it up." You look at him with a small pout and it feels too difficult having to keep his composure while you keep looking at him like that. His eyes quickly dip to the low cut shirt you're wearing before he manages to divert his attention back up to your eyes. The tension is palpable, but you don't say anything. Even if you caught it, even if you wanna tease him a little. You try to stick to your own lane in case all of this is pure delusion.
You're so fucking pretty, though. It's bad for San.
Unhealthy.
"I mean, don't get me wrong. It's nice knowing you're working hard in the lab." He follows up with a laugh. "But, you should also get some time in for yourself. Rest and eat well. You can always come back to the work tomorrow."
"What if I fall behind?"
"There's no such thing on falling behind if you're constantly working on so many different aspects, Y/N. Plus, it's not gonna be perfect. You'll have days that're slow, that'll feel like you aren't getting much out of your project. But, I promise it picks up again and things will come out of it regardless."
"Noted." You smile at him. "I appreciate that."
"How about I finish up in there and we head out together? I'd really hate to leave you here in the office alone, especially if I don't have to." You look at him and even though everything inside of you is fighting, pleading, to say no, you end up with—
"Okay." You softly respond. "I'm gonna go clean up."
"Sounds good. I'll be out in a minute." He gives you that look again and you hate that you don't know if he looks at everyone else like this or just you. You eye him once more even as he's turned towards his desk checking his phone before you head out of his office and to your desk. You did make good progress on the rig, which you know Sunwoo would be grateful about. The only thing he needs to do is add the part he created the other day, a tube where the mouse would be situated for lick behavior tests.
Meanwhile, San plops onto his computer chair and pulls up his emails, looping in the appropriate people to help fix certain issues. He's got a few emails regarding just-in-time information needed for the grants he's been re-applying for, making a mental note to hop on a quick meeting with the people involved so they can get their reports and data together and send it off in a timely manner.
It never ends, he thinks.
All is his life consists of now is work. The lab. Collaborating in various projects across departments. Working out. Sometimes, San wishes there was something else he could look forward to. Something else that could take time out of his day, something that he could put his attention to. Something like—
jongho: still on campus?
He turns to his phone when the text tone goes off, seeing the message from Jongho. San quickly checks the time and finishes up the last email he was working on before he got distracted.
san: yeah, gonna head out tho. just working on some last min urgent emails that came in.
jongho: wanna grab something to eat? i'll meet you at your car
san: alright, give me like 10 mins.
San sends off his last few emails before checking his calendar for tomorrow's meetings. He has a virtual talk after class that he needs to prep for, which he'll do later tonight. Plus, he'll need to gather that information for the grants. Just thinking about it makes San breathe out a heavy sigh, slightly feeling overwhelmed at his never-ending to-do list.
Yeah, a new hobby or distraction would be nice.
"Ready?" You turn to see Professor Choi locking up his office, duffle bag slung on his shoulder. When he's done, he turns and gives you a small smile; patiently waiting for you to be ready. You nod, locking your computer and grabbing your things before walking out behind him.
"So, do you always work out in the evenings?"
"I try to, yeah." You look up at him while he walks alongside of you. "Helps me release steam from all the stuff going on."
"I can only imagine." You tug on your bag strap. "I don't know how you do it with your busy schedule."
"I'm not too busy." He says in a playful tone. "Just enough."
"Sure." You laugh. "Everyone knows how busy and occupied you are, Professor Choi."
"What if everyone just hypes me up too much and has the wrong idea about me?"
"I doubt that."
"How would you know, hm?" He smiles when he presses the elevator door.
"Oh, please. I never not see you in a meeting or talking to someone, or doing a talk somewhere." You slip into the elevator with him. He rests against the rail on the opposite side from where you stand, fully facing you. "You even did that episode not too long ago for Professor Young's podcast."
"Wow, you really keep up, don't you?"
"How could I not?" He chuckles.
"That's nice to know that you do." He means it. As much as he loves when people treat him like a regular person, he also loves it when people keep up with his projects. His papers. His talks. He's not gonna lie; it is an ego boost, and he likes knowing that people take time out of their day because they're interested in hearing what he has to say or what he's working on now.
It's definitely nice coming from you.
You quietly stand off to the side, watching as the elevator takes you from the basement to floor 1 of the building. San is subtly eyeing you from where he stands, noticing how you keep to yourself and shift your weight between your feet in some kind of anxious move to get off of the elevator. You can barely look him in the eye and he thinks it's cute.
"What're your plans after you get dinner, Y/N?" He breaks the silence as you step out of the elevator and out of the building. The night isn't too chilly— the stars are dotting the sky beautifully, crickets are beginning to chirp. There aren't too many people moving across campus anymore, which is the usual at this time. Most are huddled up in lab if they're the working night-owl type, or resting at their dorms or apartments to get ready for the next day.
"Finish my loads of homework and try to hang out with my friends for a bit if we all aren't too tired."
"That's nice, minus the homework part." You giggle.
"What about you? If you don't mind me asking." He smiles.
"I don't. I'm just gonna meet up with the other Professor Choi and grab dinner with him."
"You two are close, yeah?" He nods.
"Yup."
"That's cute."
"Is it?" He asks in a playful, sing-song way that has you shifting your attention to your feet to bite back a huge smile.
"It is. Very." You finally look up at him and meet his eyes. "By the way, I hope I'm not making you walk extra steps tonight." You point at the dining hall just down the path. "I can take it from here if you need to get to your car or meet him somewhere else."
"It's alright, I parked right over here." He nods towards the parking garage coming up on the left. "Easiest garage to find parking at."
"Works out then." You give him a tiny, toothless smile.
"Your friends are able to join you for dinner, right?"
"Should be. I'll call them in a few." You pause in your steps when the garage is directly to the left now. "Thanks for walking me, Professor Choi."
"You sure you don't need me to walk you towards the end of the path?"
"All good. I'm a big girl." He laughs.
"Yeah." He's doing that thing again. That thing where he just looks at you with a certain glint in his eye— a certain glint that makes you overthink, makes you wonder if he does this with everyone he comes across, or if it's just you.
"Goodnight, I hope you have a good dinner."
"You too." You give him one last smile and wave before you start walking towards the dining hall, creating more distance between you two. You don't catch the way he continues to watch you until you've managed to cross the street and approach the dining hall— phone pressed against your ear because he assumes you're calling up your friends to meet you.
When he feels comfortable to take his eyes off of you, he crosses the way to the garage and starts walking towards his car that's sitting on the current ground level, Jongho patiently leaning against the tail end of it.
"Uh." Jongho laughs. "The hell was that?"
"What was what?"
"I saw you from here, don't try and be slick on me now."
"It was nothing?" San pops open his trunk and tosses his duffle bag in.
"Didn't look like it." Jongho snorts.
"Y/N was just in lab and I didn't want her to leave alone."
"Your rotation student?"
"Mhm."
"Okay. I'm all for being a gentleman but be careful." He gives him a look.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"I've known you for years, bro. There's a certain look in your eyes and it doesn't exactly scream 'nothing.'"
"Well, it is." Is all San says. He doesn't really have anything else to say because he doesn't wanna sound like he's defending himself way too much when he doesn't need to. He knows better. Maybe. Hopefully.
"Aye." Jongho shrugs. "Want you to be happy but just keep it safe, yeah? You've worked really hard for everything you have."
"I know." San lets out a breath. "Anyway, where do you wanna go for dinner?"
"Happy hour at the bar nearby? I can be passenger princess, or if you really want, we can drive separately to make it easier. I guess." He playfully huffs, making San chuckle.
"Just get in."
On the way to the bar, Jongho gives San more details about the collaboration and that the group is incredibly interested in moving forward. San nods, agreeing that it would be good for them and everyone involved both funding-wise and opportunity-wise. Jongho then tells San about his recent grants that were finally accepted and re-awarded, giving him a little more leeway to purchase new equipment he's been having his eyes on for Jiung and a few other of his lab members to toy around with. There's a certain idea that's been floating in his head for awhile now, one that San honestly doesn't understand much about because electrical engineering is a whole other beast to him. He gets the gist, and he knows Jongho has only done incredibly work, continuing to one-up himself every single time he comes back around with a new idea.
"So, there's another thing I've been thinking about." Jongho says, as they finally arrive to the sports bar and follow the host to a table on the back patio.
"Should I be scared?" San asks as they sit and immediately order their go-to beers and the karaage they love so much.
"I was thinking of asking the dean for some real estate at the new campus building."
"Bartlett Hall? The one that just finished construction?" Jongho nods.
"Mhmmm." He responds in a sing-song tone. "I briefly mentioned it to him in passing and he told me we'd talk more, but was hoping to get you onboard, too."
"Why me?" San laughs, picking at a piece of karaage with a toothpick before popping it into his mouth. Before San can hear Jongho's reasoning, the server comes back to take their orders. They both order different burgers, planning to exchange a half for the other.
"Was thinking we could open the joint department together, finally have a space for us to combine our work in electrical engineering and bioengineering." San pokes out his bottom lip and nods.
"Sooo, we'd have to write a whole pitch and sell it to the dean?"
"Yeah basically, but we can run it by Namjoon first and see what he says."
"I'm down. I dunno if the dean will budge without implementing certain requirements from our end, but, I'm down to try."
"Yeah?" Jongho laughs. "Glad to hear you're down. It'll be good! I've been thinking about it for awhile but I was always hesitant. Think it's probably just best to take the leap. Worst thing they can say is no."
"That's true. Yeah, I'm down. It'll be good for the students and the postdocs. They'll have a space for them to collaborate together. Pretty exciting to think about, actually."
"Thought so." Jongho sips his beer. "I'll start working on a proposal and send it to you for edits."
"Sounds good with me."
"How was that meeting with Zara, by the way? I never got around to asking."
"Oh, it was good." He shrugs. "We talked a lot about getting her lab situated and getting on more grants ASAP."
"Sounded like a productive talk. Have you met again afterwards?"
"Yeah, it was." San clears his throat. "We met a few more times just to talk a bit more on some finer details for her lab and plans. Hope it was helpful at least. I turned her to Namjoon most of the time cause who else would know more?" Jongho laughs.
"Yeah."
"She's cool, though. Really sweet." Jongho snorts. "What?"
"I see Mingi's plan isn't really working well." San rolls his eyes, stuffing a few fries into his mouth before taking a bite.
"Yeah, no. It's not." San shakes his head. "Don't even think about instigating, either."
"It's kinda fun. Plus, she's obviously attracted to you."
"No." San shuts it down.
"Why not? Why don't you just continue seeing where it goes?"
"I am, and I'm still in the same position I was when I first met her."
"Which is?"
"I respect her as a colleague and a colleague only." San glares at him. "I'm not going to force anything that isn't meant to happen."
"Okay, fine. You're right. I'll get behind that." Jongho dips his last fry into the ketchup before looking back up at his bestfriend. "But at least promise me you won't be entirely closed off to it if it does naturally develop into something?"
"Uh." San pauses. He pauses not because of Zara or whatever Jongho's saying right now; he meant to agree, but he finds his thoughts suddenly roaming to.. you.
His curiosity, the need to learn more about you.
"Hello?"
"Sorry." San shakes the thoughts from his head in case Jongho can hear it or something. "Yeah."
"Definitely not genuine. What's on your mind?"
"Nothing."
"I can hear you thinking."
"Can you? That's an invasion of privacy."
"It's her, isn't it?"
"I literally have no idea what you're talking about." Jongho stares and gives him a certain look, causing San to divert his attention away. Away from him, onto anything, anyone nearby.
"Yeah, okay. That's all I needed to know." Jongho quietly sips on the rest of his beer before pushing his plate aside and sitting back into the seat. "San, make your decisions wisely."
"I already told you it was nothing."
"Okay." Jongho says in defeat, leaving the topic alone. All he wants is for San to be genuinely happy, just like their other friends do. But, he's also hoping San is smart enough to make the right [and wise] decisions.
Not be blinded by anything, causing him to make irrational and impulsive decisions based on his feelings.
"Anyway, are you good to go?" San crumples the napkin and tosses it onto his plate before standing up and grabbing his keys, phone.
"Yeah, I am."

Chapter 8
David glanced towards Granny’s trying to see what might be keeping Robin and Regina, but between the dark of night and the falling snow, which was no longer Regina’s signature purple and was once again a more natural pristine white, he couldn’t see a thing.  He considered walking over himself, but the tension had been understandably thick between those two all day and he knew they probably had a lot to talk about; it was not a conversation he was eager to interrupt.
David turned back to Belle and Gold, about to comment on the length of time the other two had been gone, only to witness Gold ushering his wife quickly down the street. They were almost at the edge of the snow-less bubble Regina had created when David’s voice boomed behind them. “Where do you think you’re going?”
Gold stopped and turned with an obsequious smile. “My wife is cold; I’m taking her back in the shop.”
“That’s fine. Belle can leave if she likes.” David’s voice was every bit that of the authoritative royal. “But you’re staying here.”
“I’m afraid I can’t oblige you. With a crazed person on the loose, I must stay with her.”
“No,” David replied flatly and then he looked at Belle who appeared taken aback by his firm refusal. David relented and adopted a more moderate tone. “We think the person creating this storm is a young woman who was trapped in your husband’s vault. Surely you must see how valuable his assistance is?”
Belle, who was gripping her husband’s arm, turned to David and asked in innocent tones, “If Rumple says he doesn’t know, then what more do you want from us?”
David eyed her shrewdly, could any person really be in this much denial about the person she married? However, when he spoke, it was with gentle understanding. “Belle, don’t you see what’s going on here? We think that a magical urn came back through the portal with Hook and Emma last night, from your husband’s vault. We think a young woman was in that urn. A woman who is angry enough that she’s creating this storm and knocked out Hook because she thought he was the one who put her there.  There’s already well over a foot of snow on the ground. If we don’t find her, and this storm keeps going, I don’t know what’ll happen; my guess is we’ll all be buried alive.  We have to find a way to stop it before that happens. Your husband was missing all day, he clearly knows more than he’s saying.  Are you okay risking the life of every soul in Storybrooke because you’re cold? If you need to warm up, I suggest you join Robin and Regina at Granny’s for a coffee while your husband stays out here with me.”
Belle’s eyes were saucer-like by the time David finished speaking, she turned to Rumple, trembling either from the cold or from David’s words. “I’m fine, I can stay. If you can help...” she let her voice trail off in an unasked question.
The man sighed and turned to David. “Have you considered that perhaps my presence will be more of a hindrance, than a help?”
David narrowed his eyes at him. “Many times, but why don’t you explain yourself.”
xXx
“Wait, Regina!” Robin yelled as he stepped out from behind Regina.
“What?” Regina looked back to Robin, a fireball perched on her hand at the ready.  “She just froze Granny’s! I might not love her lasagna, but it’s an institution in Storybrooke.”
“I know, but look at her. She’s scared.” Robin stepped forward and held his hands up as a sign of peace. “Hi, my name is Robin; this is Regina, what’s your name?”
“Don’t come any closer!” The woman barked. As per Hook’s description, she was a young, very beautiful, and very angry looking blonde woman.
“Okay, no problem,” Robin complied and stepped back, however he didn’t lose eye contact with her. “Listen, if you promise not to freeze anything else, my friend, Regina here, will put away her fireball and we can have a conversation.” He looked back and gave Regina a pleading look. Regina didn’t seem pleased about it, but she did lower her hand, though the fire still burned in her palm.
Robin looked back to the woman. “There, see, no one has to get hurt. Now, why don’t we calmly discuss whatever it is that has you afraid?”
“Why do you think I’m afraid?” snapped the woman with bravado. However, Robin hadn’t made a great leap.  There was a tremor to her voice and the look in her eyes radiated fear.  If he hadn’t seen her turn Granny’s to ice, he would have had a hard time believing she was responsible for creating the storm or hurting Hook.
“Because you don’t seem like someone who would purposely hurt innocent people.”
“Maybe I am!” she said defensively, but she looked unsettled by what he’d said.
“If so you’re doing a good job.  You’ve brought the town to a standstill and I hear you knocked out and almost froze the savior’s boyfriend.”  Regina spoke matter-of-factly, but allowed the fireball in her palm to extinguish. “The savior is not someone you want to make an enemy of…”
“Did I hurt him?”  The woman swallowed roughly.
“Yes,” Robin replied truthfully. “He was unconscious and almost died from being out in the cold, but we think he’s going to recover.”
“I thought he was the one who trapped me, but...”
“You now realize that’s not true,” Robin finished for her, the pieces starting to come together, albeit slowly. “Okay, let’s start from the beginning. Do you have any idea where you are or how you got here?”
The woman immediately looked defensive again and her posture stiffened.  It was clear she didn’t have an answer to the questions. Sensing her unease, Regina’s hand once again filled with fire and she adopted a fighting stance.
“Please! Both of you!” Robin Hood put his hands up once again in an effort to defuse the rising tension. He gave Regina a pointed look before turning to the woman and trying to appear as kind and nonthreatening as he could. “Worry not; we think we know how you got here. We recently had...” his eyes slid to Regina once again before he referenced the unpleasantness with her sister, “an incident with a wicked witch and she opened a portal to the past of another realm. We think you must have come through the portal while it was open.  We mean you no harm, but you have to stop freezing things if you want us to help you.”
“I... I don’t know if I can!” The woman’s voice was rough, and it was apparent she was having just as bad of a day as the rest of them.
“Well, now we’re getting somewhere. Why don’t we talk?” Robin smiled at her. “Would you like something to eat or drink? Perhaps some tea or coffee?”
The fire died out in Regina’s hand and she rubbed her palm against her coat.  One might assume that her eyes would be glued to the interloper in blue, but they weren’t. She was watching Robin, feeling in awe of how he was handling the situation. He was so calm and so kind. It wasn’t necessarily surprising, it was after all how he’d treated her when they first met and that thought pulled at her heart. He was such a good man. She’d finally found a good man to love and it had all been ripped away.  She felt the anger build once again and threaten to boil over.  Instead of letting that happen, she took several deep breaths and calmed herself. Nothing was helped by dwelling on her personal situation, particularly not the current crisis, so she forced herself to turn her attention back to the woman in blue.
Robin had ducked behind Granny’s counter to pour a cup of coffee for the woman. When he handed it to her, he asked, “Now why don’t we start by you telling us your name?”
The woman took a sip of the hot liquid and then with wide eyes she looked at Robin. “I am Queen Elsa of Arendelle.”

“What?”  Emma felt her heart-rate increase at both his question and the way his gaze was drilling through her.
“Would you like me to repeat the question?” Killian asked when she didn’t elaborate. He studied her intently in the firelight, his head canted to one side quizzically.  When she still didn’t speak, he repeated, “In the Enchanted Forest if I hadn’t already been in the Captain’s Quarters, what would have happened between you and him?”
“Me and who?” Emma asked obtusely.
“Him.” Killian tried to sound neutral; however, the word came out with a slightly injured sounding huff.
“You mean you?”
“I mean him.”
“You do know that was you?” Emma narrowed her eyes as she watched him and tried not to feel amused at the expression on his face. It was clear that he was serious about this, but there was a surreal aspect to the conversation for her that she couldn’t help but find funny.
“It was not me,” Killian replied slowly, “the sentient being sitting across from you right now. I was the person already there, when you brought him home.”
“He brought me home,” she clarified.
“A-ha!” Killian said as if he’d scored a point in a game he didn’t want to win.
“He, who also happens to be you, brought me home,” Emma repeated and then bit her lip to keep from smiling. She was only moderately successful. Truth was she was finding this side to him to be very cute, not that she’d admit it to him necessarily. She hadn’t often been the object of jealousy, and while as a modern woman she didn’t find it a romantic notion necessarily, it was heartening that he cared enough to let it bother him. Besides, the situation was so crazy that laughter really was the best way to cope.
“What’s so funny?” he demanded and crossed his arms protectively in front of him.
“You. You’re jealous of yourself!” she replied pointedly.
He shrugged and looked slightly peeved. “I don’t get jealous.”
“All evidence to the contrary.” She nudged his thigh with her foot in a playful manner. When he looked back to her through the dim light, she smirked teasingly at him. “First off, can we agree that even though he wasn’t you,” she pointed at him, “he was absolutely you?”
“That,” he shook his head, but finally allowed a small smile, “is nonsensical, besides, he... I... was a different person then. I’m not him anymore. You didn’t even know him.”
“Maybe,” Emma replied with a smile, not allowing the circular nature of the conversation to daunt her. “But I liked him.”
“Yes, that was apparent.” Killian replied with a grimace.
“You’re missing the point. I liked him. I liked you, that part of you.”
“Yes, it was obvious.”
Her sigh held both amusement and frustration, however when she spoke it was with care. “Is this because I kissed him? You know that was to distract him so he didn’t see you.”
“A distraction you were enjoying quite a bit.”
At that rejoinder, Emma made a decision. She tossed back the comforter and then crawled from her end of the couch to his. His eyes went wide, and his heart rate increased at her unexpected approach. Straddling his body, she planted a bare knee on either side of his flannel-clad thighs. Her own too-large flannel pajama tops were hanging haphazardly off to the side, exposing a tempting view of her bare shoulder as she rested her hands on the blanket that still covered his shoulders. Her hair framed her face in a messy tangle making her appear untamed and, definitely, tantalizing.
He felt his groin tighten involuntarily. He was supposed to be getting answers, not getting aroused. He hugged his arms even tighter across his chest and let his gaze fall to the side and whispered, “What are you doing?”
“I never thought I’d see the day when you were insecure.” Emma studied him quizzically, wishing he would make eye contact.
He shrugged noncommittally, so she continued. “You know it’s not like we were together when any of this happened...” Her voice was gentle, but her meaning was clear, it wasn’t necessarily any of his business who she went home with. However, she squeezed his shoulders to lessen the sting of her words. To be fair this was a rather convoluted situation, what with him being both parties of a potential time-travelling love triangle.
“I know… that’s not what... I mean... no, I know we weren’t together.” Killian finally uncrossed his arms and gestured with his hook. Emma felt a shiver zip along her skin where the cold metal brushed inadvertently against her bare thigh. “It’s just... I’ve been interested in pursuing you since we met.” He seemed to be choosing his words carefully. “And while you’ve clearly been charmed by me…” Even though he still wasn’t looking at her, Emma rolled her eyes at that with almost theatrical flair. “You’ve resisted my allure. With him, you willingly went back to his cabin on the first night you met him. The first night. That’s why I’m inquisitive about what you were planning to do if I hadn’t been present.”
Emma brought her hands to his cheeks, idly stroking his scruff with her thumbs before tilting his head so he had to look at her.  “Okay. First, we were on a mission, you and me.” She let her left hand fall from his cheek so she could gesture between the two of them for emphasis. “I did what I had to do for us, again, that’s you and me, and our mission to succeed.”
Her left hand moved back up to his shoulder, but this time she slipped it underneath the blanket. With a soft touch, she caressed over the smooth skin of his shoulder and then pressed tenderly down his arm over his bicep and along his forearm. She felt his muscles grow taut under her touch and it seemed as if his breathing had become slightly more erratic. When she reached his hand, she ran her palm over the rough skin of his knuckles and then laced her fingers with his. The tingles she felt from the contact with his bare skin and just his nearness were consuming. Mesmerized, she stared at the sight of their fingers twined together.
He squeezed her hand tenderly and then, his voice hoarse, asked, “Was there a second thing?”
What was she doing again? This proximity to him was making her lose her train of thought. Maybe she should go back to the other end of the couch.  However, when she looked back to his eyes, his pupils blown wide in the firelight, she found he was watching her with an intent, but nervous expression, so she took a deep breath and then shook her head to clear it. After everything he’d done for her, namely jumping down the portal after her, she owed him an answer.
“Right…” she cleared her throat and resolved to not get distracted by him until she had said her piece. “Yes, there was.” This time she squeezed his hand before she continued. “Second… it was not the first night I met him.” He was about to protest but Emma moved her right hand to his lips to silence him gently with her index finger. She felt something deep in her chest well up, almost making it hard to breathe. How had she pretended for so long that she didn’t have feelings for this man?  Looking back over their time spent together, suddenly everything became crystal clear.
“It wasn’t the first time I met him… because I met him in the Enchanted Forest right before we climbed a beanstalk together. I was attracted to him immediately, but he was a fairy tale pirate, working for the other side, hell-bent on revenge and he could see right through me, which scared the hell out of me. And then when things began to change, when we, he and I, were on the same side, when he became a friend... a very good friend... and a trusted ally, things got complicated.  The attraction was always there, but I had issues, I still have issues, and there were curses and danger… “
Emma stopped abruptly and swallowed hard over the lump that had begun to form in her throat. She also took the opportunity to take a deep breath, Killian’s hook had found its way to her waist, holding her steady, and his eyes hadn’t left hers, but some of the uncertainty in them had waned. She squeezed his hand one more time, before she continued, “And then you did begin to pursue me and you made it clear you had feelings for me.  So there was no way to act on that attraction, that chemistry, that pull without it having deep and lasting emotional ramifications for both of us, and that... was terrifying and complicated and something I absolutely wasn’t ready for. But in the Enchanted Forest, there you were, still you in so many ways, but you without all of our baggage.  It was you with no repercussions. You didn’t know me; you didn’t have feelings for me. So, yes, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed him. Because he was you. I got to flirt with you, without it hurting you. And nothing would have happened, he was minutes away from passing out. I would have kept him occupied until he was out cold and then met back up with you. And no, I didn’t want to sleep with him, it didn’t cross my mind, because the first time I’m with you, I want it to be you.”
Killian looked absolutely gobsmacked. All slack jaw and slightly parted lips. He tried to swallow, but he found his mouth was dry and his heart was pounding in his chest. He had never heard Emma string so many sentences together at once; she was usually a woman of few words.  The room was silent except for the wind howling outside and the fire crackling beside them. However, the way his blood was thrumming through his veins, it occurred to him that she could probably hear it from her position perched over his lap.  He should say something, but when he opened his mouth to speak, nothing came out. A man, who had survived and thrived on always having something to say, had finally been rendered speechless.
Sensing that she might have overpowered him with her unplanned and unrehearsed recital but feeling empowered after finally admitting how far back her feelings for him stretched, Emma let go of his hand and snaked her right arm around his neck. At the same time, she let her left hand slide from his cheek to his neck and then gave into temptation and traced an enticing path down and over his chest. Her nails lightly scraped across the furled hair until they hit metal.  A smile curled her lips as she lightly fingered the charms that hung from his necklace and then gave them a gentle tug towards her.  With only inches separating them, the new proximity only heightened the frisson of sexual energy that snapped between them.
Her eyes flicked down and she watched his tongue dart out and wet his lips. She felt the desire, the unmistakable naked desire, which she’d been trying to ignore, tamp down or banish since the day she met him, roar back to life.  With a lick of her own lips, she whispered, “Does that answer your question?” before her lips crashed into his.
The instant the kiss connected them; Killian came alive. While he’d spent the last few minutes in stunned silence, listening, watching her and trying to process everything she’d said, now his body responded instinctually.  His hand hit the couch behind them; reflexively trying to keep their balance, even as his hook arm pulled her tighter to him. The second Emma felt him respond, she used her position above him to change the angle and deepen the kiss.
Heat. The entire day had been about the cold, but now all she felt was heat. Delicious heat. The kind that raced like lava through her veins and ignited something primal in her soul.  It was as if they were melting together, combining as one.  She wanted to be closer to him, craved it. Craved him.  Keeping a tight hold on his necklace with one hand, the fingers of the other slid through his hair, avoiding his earlier injury, until she gently gripped a handful of silky black strands, anchoring him to her.   Their lips continued to work deliciously against one another in soft, but hungry, open-mouthed kisses, and the first time their tongues met in a warm tangle, her moan broke the silence.
The second he heard it, the pirate in him took control. With a movement only someone with great strength and dexterity could accomplish, he tightened his hook arm around her and then both scooted them down and flipped them so that a moment later Emma found herself flat on her back on the sofa, an amorous Killian on top of her.
He had broken the kiss to switch their position, but now his lips once again found hers.  His tongue pillaged her mouth, fervently kissing and licking and sucking as he tried to elicit another moan from her. The lustful sound on Emma’s lips only served to fuel his passion. He wanted to make her feel, to give her pleasure, he wanted for her to desire him as much as he desired her. And to him, that moan was a sign he was succeeding.
As she settled beneath him, his solid mass delightfully weighed her down. The wool blanket that had covered his shoulders slipped unceremoniously to the floor, and her arms wrapped around his bare back. She felt giddy. This was it. This was happening.  They were happening. Her hands traveled over the surprisingly smooth skin of his back and she was enthralled by the way his muscles tensed and released under her touch.
Without warning, his lips left hers and instead trailed soft kisses across her cheek until he was sucking on her earlobe. And that did it. Louder than before, Emma moaned, but this time it came out in tandem with his name.  His mouth instantly curved into a self-satisfied grin and he pulled back to look at her. He paused only long enough to wag his eyebrows at her suggestively, before he dove back in, his mouth finding her neck.
However, something she’d seen in the split second he’d hovered above her gave her pause.  In the firelight, the flush of his cheeks had glowed brightly, maybe too bright, and there had been a light sheen of perspiration on his forehead.
“Wait,” Emma gasped as Killian nipped and licked his way down her neck, leaving a trail of fire in his wake that made her moan again. Somehow, most likely by a simple flick of his deft fingers, the top button of her oversized flannel pajama tops had come undone and he was pulling the collar open, pressing warm, wet kisses all along the gentle ridge of her collar bone. When a second button came loose from its hole, and Killian’s mouth started trailing lower, she once again spoke her entreaty, “Wait.”
This time he obeyed, and looked up at her, a question in his eyes.
“Are you sure you’re up for this?” she asked breathlessly.
“Up?” As he said the word, his eyes lit up with an oddly appealing combination of amusement and desire. Once again, he wagged his eyebrows, but he also shifted his hips over hers and with deliberation pressed his arousal against her soft center.
She audibly gasped.
“Does that answer your question?” he asked in a low rumble, mimicking the last words she’d said before kissing him.
Emma fought the desire that coursed through her. Even though he’d immediately shifted his hips away from her as soon as his point was made, that brief contact had been like an electric shock that had started at her center and reverberated through every nerve ending in her body.  She knew she wanted him. She knew he wanted her. And after that display of his she knew they were both aroused to the breaking point. However, she also knew it had been a very physically traumatic day for him.
Emma shifted to the outside of the cushion, making room so that he could release his weight onto the sofa instead of hovering over her.
With an expression that bordered perilously close to full on pout, he settled next to her, letting his head fall to the pillow. “What’s wrong, love? Is this not what you want?”
Immediately, her hand found his cheek and she caressed it with a wide circle of her thumb.  “Of course I want it, but I’m worried about you. You almost died today and just now you looked a little…”
“What? How do I appear to you?”
“You looked a little flushed and,” her hand soothed across his brow, “you have a bit of perspiration on your forehead. How do you feel?”
He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, she interrupted. He was clearly about to issue reassurances by rote and that’s not what she wanted to hear.  “Honestly, Killian. Tell me how you really feel.”
“I’m fine. Your magic pain pills erased my headache, the medicinal soup gave me back my vigor and you in my arms healed my soul.”
She smirked at him in order to hide the fact that his words made her heart pitter patter in her chest. “Good, I’m glad to hear it, but maybe we should hold off until later, another time when you’re stronger, when-“
“When we’re being attacked by whatever is creating this bloody storm? Or perhaps we should wait until we get sucked into another time portal, or until Regina decides to make good on whatever threat upset you last night.”
“Killian…”
“No, Emma, if you’re not ready then end of story, we arrest our current development, but if your solitary concern is my health then,” instead of finishing his thought he looked suggestively at her.
The way he was looking at her caused a melting sensation that started in her chest, and then ran like molten liquid to her toes. She didn’t answer him verbally; however, she did feel herself drifting even closer to him, her torso leaning into his as if pulled by a magnet, her bare leg shifting in between his flannel-clad ones, making it clear it was not her desire to stop.  It reminded her of how they’d fit together so flawlessly earlier that afternoon, and that reminded her of why they had needed to fit together, for the body-to-body warming, and ultimately why she was concerned. Her desire was not the important thing. The important thing was that he almost just DIED. She could still see him lying cold and lifeless on the floor of the barn and the thought sent a cold stab of pain right through her.  “But... are you sure... you look-”
“Love, if I look peaked, no illness is the cause. It’s because of you.”
“Me?” Concerned, Emma shifted back from him slightly, though there was really no place to go and stay on the couch. She propped herself on her elbow as if she might be planning to get up.
“Yes,” he affirmed, however he didn’t let her move away; instead he anchored his leg around her hip, just as he’d done when he woke to find her naked against him that afternoon. He snaked his hook arm around her, the metal pressing firmly, but not uncomfortably, into the excess fabric of her pajama tops gathered at her lower back. “Regardless of whatever injuries I might have sustained earlier, having the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on, on top of me, kissing me senseless, is going to cause a physical reaction.”
“Is that right?” she asked in a faux serious tone and then shifted back and away from him on the narrow couch.
As he felt her slip away from him, he sagged against the back of the couch and reluctantly released her from his grip.  He pressed his eyes closed, and then felt her weight shift next to him and he knew she was rising from the couch.  It appeared he’d failed to convince her of his robust health. After a deep breath, and unable to keep a dejected note out of his voice, he said, “it’s okay, love.”
“Oh, it‘s going to be much better than okay, love,” she mimicked cheerfully.
At her tone, he slowly opened one eye.  What he saw made his other eye pop open and she immediately had his full and undivided attention.  She was leaning on one elbow, smiling cheekily down at him, the black scrap of fabric that comprised her bikini underwear hanging from her index finger.
He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Apparently, she had not been getting up when he’d felt her shift next to him. She had something else in mind.
“Cat got your tongue, Captain?” This time it was her turn to wag her eyebrows at him. With a flick of her wrist she flung her underwear over the couch and then she reached for his hook.
“Whaddaya doing?” he asked almost incoherently. Still not entirely believing what was happening.
“The hook has to go,” she replied frankly as she began unscrewing it and then set about loosening the brace, so she could remove it as well. Second time today, she was becoming an expert. “You wearing it while we… you know… is definitely advanced difficulty. Not a good idea for our first time.”
His jaw dropped as he watched her work. Once she’d removed the hook and brace, she turned away from him and carefully sat them on the raised hearth of the fireplace. When she twisted back around, she found that he was no longer looking quite so stunned. In fact, he appeared fully recovered as evidenced by the fact that the deft fingers of his right hand were swiftly flicking open the rest of the buttons on her pajama tops. As he finished, he looked up at her, his eyes dark, his expression held both hunger and a shy question, as if he was silently asking if what he’d done was okay.  She now knew it was possible to look like both an eager puppy and a seductive pirate at the exact same time.
“So helpful, Killian,” she murmured flirtatiously and shrugged out of the garment before flinging the yellow and blue fabric over the couch. Now wearing only her tank top, she leaned over and kissed him. A firm, wet kiss that was a promise and an answer to the question she’d seen in his eyes.
As soon as their lips met, he tugged her to him, a feeling of joy bubbling from within.  She was kissing him. Emma Swan was in his arms, disrobing and kissing him. He pulled his lips from hers for a split second to change the angle and was about to go in for more, when she pulled back once again and broke the kiss.
“But two can play that game,” she whispered with an almost predatory smile as she surreptitiously slipped her hand under the comforter and surprised him by tugging on the waistband of his matching crown pajama bottoms.
Killian eyes went wide and he let out a startled grunt at her bold maneuver.  However, he instantly cooperated by lifted his hips so she could work on removing the offending garment.  He sucked in air and closed his eyes briefly as her hand brushed his erection.  However, she didn’t linger; she was on a mission. Next, her fingers ignited a trail of fire down his bare legs as she pushed the fabric down his hips, past his thighs until finally she was able to pull them off completely.  Almost triumphantly, she pulled the pajamas out from under the comforter and held them up a moment, pausing to wink at Killian before she flung them over the couch to join the rest of their discarded clothes. Wanting to be helpful, he reached down and peeled off the white-athletic socks he’d borrowed from David’s bag and handed them to her, looking pleased with himself. She reached down and peeled off her own socks, before launching all of them in the air.
Once socks were discarded, she leaned into kiss him again. Their open mouths moved against one another with heated intensity, tongues sliding and sparring erotically, the passion that was always just under the surface when they were together igniting into a blaze in an instant. As they molded together, he fiddled with the hem of her tank top.  Hands roamed everywhere. Hers sliding down his chest, around his back, over his shoulders, she wanted to touch him everywhere, to learn how he felt and where he liked to be touched.  His hand found its way around her waist and under her tank top, his palm flat against the silky smooth skin of her back. He slid it between them and up under her tank top until he was cupping her breast. When he brushed over her nipple, she whimpered and he smiled against her mouth.
Without warning, she pushed back from him. For a second he blinked, feeling bereft from the loss of contact and worried he had done something wrong, until he realized she was only making space in order to rip her tank top over her head and launch it over the couch in one movement. As soon as she’d done it he grinned wickedly at her, it had been the last barrier between them.  They paused a moment, both panting, eyes roaming over the other, taking their fill in a way neither had dared that afternoon.
Her gaze drifted back to his face only to find him transfixed by her breasts for the second time that day. She chuckled and reached for his chin to tilt it back upwards. “I knew when I took off my shirt; you were going to forget about me.”
He met her eye and gave an almost imperceptible shake of his head. “Never,” he whispered, his voice hoarse with desire, need coursing through him. “You are so beautiful, Emma.”
Emma blushed prettily, but then in a soft almost shy voice answered, “So are you.”
“I know,” he replied in his usual manner of cocky assurance, but a moment later his eyes drifted to his left arm and he murmured a little less confidently, “Most of me, anyway.”
Emma knit her brows in confusion until she followed his gaze to where his left hand should have been. She immediately shook her head defiantly, “All of you.” To punctuate her statement she reached for his left arm and brought the scarred skin of his severed forearm to her lips.
He watched her in mesmerized silence. Once again wondering if this was really happening. They were together and naked, she was pressing a kiss to his damaged skin; he knew it was her way of letting him know that she accepted all of him. If he was honest, what she thought of him and what she would think of his disfigurement once he was stripped bare of braces and hooks and fake hands and leather armor was something that had followed him, a very real fear of rejection niggling at the back of his brain periodically over the course of their relationship.
In awe, he almost didn’t notice that her mouth had left the site of his injury and she was now trailing kisses up his bicep. Almost. Because of course he noticed, there was no realistic way he would ever not notice the warm, wet trail her lips were leaving against his skin. His pulsed raced and a thrill shot through him; he shivered involuntarily at the sensation.
Immediately, Emma pulled back so she could meet his gaze, concern furrowing the brow over her lust-filled eyes. Clearly, she had felt the shiver. “The cold or me?”
“All you, love.” Giving her no time to respond he hooked his left arm around her torso, lifting her body weight in one fluid motion, and sweeping her under him, so she was once again lying flat on her back. Killian now hovered over her, his left elbow braced against the outer edge of the couch. She let out a sound between a shriek and a giggle at his unexpected movement and the noise inspired him to run his fingers lightly along her side, trying to get her to make the sound again.  It had been so playful and carefree; he’d never heard anything quite like it from her before and he was pretty sure he would be quite content to spend the rest of his life trying to find ways to get her to make that noise again.
The tickling caused her to squirm under him, which caused her to retaliate and retaliate she did.  Her fingers began to move over his side and it wasn’t long before she hit a spot that both caused him to laugh and to lose his balance, weight dropping so his body was entirely pressed against her. It was much like they’d been this afternoon except for this time there was no bikini underwear or pillowcases separating them.
Killian groaned at the deliciously intimate contact as she opened her thighs and wrapped her legs around him. “This is better,” she sighed as he shifted over her, his cock sliding against her center.
“Better than what?” he panted, barely restraining himself from entering her right then and there. However, he’d waited so long for this he wasn’t about to ruin it by putting his own pleasure before hers.
“Than this afternoon when we were… naked… but you were out cold.”
“I’m glad you prefer me conscious,” he replied as he started kissing his way down her neck. “But you know you need never stand on ceremony with me.”
As he moved lower, she let her head fall back to the pillow as she sank back and enjoyed his ministrations. However, somewhere in the back recesses of her mind it registered that it was still cold, so she reached down and pulled the comforter up and over his back as his lips moved lower. There was no reason they couldn’t be cozy inside the covers and stay protected from the chill in the cabin. The only heat, and light, was still only coming from the fireplace and the stove.
He trailed slow kisses down to her shoulder and then across her collarbone, leaving no section of sensitive skin untended. Finally, his mouth found her breasts. He began licking, sucking and laving until Emma was moaning and writhing, her hands kneading his shoulders, but it wasn’t enough. Not early enough. She ran her palms across his back and up to his shoulders.  Fingering the black locks at the nape of his neck, she gently slid her fingers through his hair, and gently tugged, trying to get him to look up at her.
Flushed and panting, when she finally succeeded at getting him to look at her, she brought one hand in front of his face and made the ‘come here’ gesture with her index finger.
Killian smiled wolfishly at her, but shook his head in refusal. He winked at her and then his face was back between her breasts, but this time he started kissing a line down her stomach. She sucked in a breath, and for a moment Emma lost her train of thought, lost the ability to think at all, the sensation of his tongue and lips on her skin creating a haze of pleasure and anticipation.
When he buried his head between her legs, Emma moaned so loudly it was as if a siren had pierced the silence of the old farmhouse. Killian chuckled against her thigh and redoubled his efforts.
Under the spell of his talented tongue and lips and teeth, Emma felt herself winding tight, pleasure coiling and spooling in her belly and thighs. Her mind went blank as she succumbed to the pleasure, not thinking just feeling.
When she let out another moan, she startled herself back to the moment. For a second, it all felt surreal, the day felt surreal, and she wondered if this were all nothing more than an erotic dream. She managed to lift the comforter and glance down. The sight of his head between her thighs sent another jolt of pleasure through her; oh, it was real all right. He was real. She was so close, and in that moment, she wanted him more than she could remember ever wanting anything in her life.
She once again slid her fingers gently into the hair at the top of his head and tugged.  When he looked up she once again curled her index finger at him.  “Now,” it came out in a breathless pant, but it also came out with great confidence.
“But I’m not fini-“
Cutting him off, she shook her head. “I. Need. You. Inside me. Now.” Her speech was disjointed as she panted for breath, but her intent was clear. In the dim light of the room, he could see the raw desire reflected in her eyes.
With no more invitation needed, he was on top of her, his cock straining against her hip, his eyes locking with hers, both sets of pupils blown wide. Up close, he was once again awed by the desire he saw there, but that wasn’t all he perceived.  She was looking up at him with lust, hunger and something else... love perhaps? That thought made his heart clench tight in his chest; oh, how much his heart wanted it to be love.  Even though he still lacked the confidence to presume that he’d won her heart, without a doubt, he knew the look held affection, the most tender affection. “Emma...” he said her name reverently, as if a prayer and an oath all in one.
She brought one hand up to trace the side of his face. In the firelight, his expression was open and loving and she could not believe someone was looking at her this way. No one had ever looked at her this way.  Everything he felt for her was writ large across his face and the intensity was overwhelming. Swallowing roughly, she closed the inches between them and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. Considering what they’d just been doing and what they were about to do it was almost comically innocent, but it was also sweet, tender, and full of promise. She squeezed her eyes shut as one tear leaked through her lids and rolled down her face.
When she leaned back, his eyes searched her face. Seeing the wet trail across her cheek, he asked, “You okay?”
She nodded and then smiled up at him. Truly and radiantly smiled and she answered his question by pushing her hips upwards against his and wrapping her legs around him. Her hands moved lower until they were gliding over his backside, with gentle pressure she squeezed his ass and urged him forward.
Killian grunted as he tried to restrain himself from ramming into her. He’d waited for this for so long, dreamed about it since the moment he’d met her, been tormented by it during their year apart and then thought this level of intimacy was out of reach once he’d found her. However, he did manage to restrain himself. Instead, he moved slowly, his cock instinctively finding the warm, wet path as he leisurely slid into her.
Emma sighed as he began to fill her, it was just as good as she’d imagined. Not that she’d fantasized about this... too much. Some. Okay, a lot, she’d fantasized about this a lot. After the earlier efforts of his talented tongue, she was already hyper-aroused, and she knew it wouldn’t take much to have her tumbling over the edge.
Heat pooled in her belly once again, as the drag of his cock against her inner walls created delicious friction as he slowly entered her. She took the opportunity to savor the feel of his weight on her, savored the way the hair of his chest brushed against her erect nipples, and remembered how it had felt when that had happened mere hours ago, but they’d been in a much different situation. She couldn’t enjoy it then, but she could certainly enjoy it now. With abandon, she arched her back, pressing her breasts more firmly into his chest. Now she could succumb to the pleasure.  At this movement, Killian changed his angle over her, which put delicious pressure on her clit and she exploded.
Emma crashed over the edge just as Killian was fully seated in her, pleasure pulsing from her center, throbbing around his cock and rolling through her in waves.  Killian gritted his teeth to keep her from pulling him over the edge with her.
Killian watched in awe as she unraveled underneath him, his cock still buried at deep as he could go. When Emma came back to earth and opened her eyes, he chuckled, waiting patiently, “I knew I was good, but I didn’t realize I was that good.”
Emma smiled up at him lazily. “Shut up and do it again.”
“As you wish,” he replied and began to move inside her. They found a rhythm almost immediately, as if they’d always been meant for this. A team through and through, as if the connection they’d forged as adversaries, then allies, and then friends and then as more translated perfectly to this primal dance as their bodies joined and became one.

We’re here!!! *SOBBING UNCONTROLLABLY* It’s time for the CSSNS20 Roundup!!!!
Tumblr media
It has been quite a ride y’all...
Tumblr media
I just want to take a moment here at the beginning of the post to thank everyone who has ever been a part of this event from 2018 to now. Y’all are the ones who made this event what it is and I cannot be more grateful to have had the privilege of manning the helm for the past three years. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!!! There’s been too many participants over the years to name everyone, but I have to give a shoutout to my personal support team and the mods from all three years. Each one of them has contributed in innumerable ways and this event never would have happened without each of them and their contribution. @hollyethecurious @winterbaby89 @katie-dub, @thisonesatellite and @profdanglaisstuff. Thank you so much ladies!!! I never could have done this without you all!!!
Now that the event is over, I want to let everyone know that I will be inviting other supernatural fic to the collection over on ao3. When I first started reading fan fiction, I stumbled across the Black Swan and Red Hooks Collection, a collection for smutty fics, that continues to grow today. I want to do the same thing with the Supernatural Summer Collection. As more supernatural fics are written, I will invite them to the collection.
We are now at the close, and it’s time to round up all the wonderful fics and art that we’ve been blessed with in this year’s event. Its chassis was also used as the base for many other fighting vehicles, including the Sturmgeschütz IV assault gun, the Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer, the Wirbelwind self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, and the Brummbär self-propelled gun. The Panzer IV saw service in all combat theaters involving Germany and was the only German tank to remain in continuous production throughout the war. It was originally designed for infantry support, while the similar Panzer III was to fight armoured fighting vehicles. However as the Germans faced the formidable T-34, the Panzer IV had more development potential, with a larger turret ring to mount more powerful guns, so the two switched roles. It received various upgrades and design modifications, intended to counter new threats, extending its service life. Generally, these involved increasing the armor protection or upgrading the weapons, although during the last months of the war, with Germany's pressing need for rapid replacement of losses, design changes also included simplifications to speed up the manufacturing process. The Panzer IV was partially succeeded by the Panther medium tank, which was introduced to counter the Soviet T-34, although it continued to be a significant component of German armoured formations to the end of the war. It was the most widely exported tank in German service, with around 300 sold to Finland, Romania, Spain and Bulgaria. After the war, Syria procured Panzer IVs from France and Czechoslovakia, which saw combat in the 1967 Six-Day War. 8,553 Panzer IVs of all versions were built during World War II, a production run in Axis forces only exceeded by the StuG III assault gun with 10,086
vehicles. Development history Origins The Panzer IV was the brainchild of the German general and innovative armored warfare theorist Heinz Guderian.[6] In concept, it was intended to be a support tank for use against enemy anti-tank guns and fortifications.[7] Ideally, each tank battalion in a panzer division was to have three medium companies of Panzer IIIs and one heavy company of Panzer IVs.[8] On 11 January 1934, the German army wrote the specifications for a "medium tractor", and issued them to a number of defense companies. To support the Panzer III, which would be armed with a 37-millimetre (1.46 in) anti-tank gun, the new vehicle would have a short-barreled, howitzer-like 75-millimetre (2.95 in) as its main gun, and was allotted a weight limit of 24 tonnes (26.46 short tons). Development was carried out under the name Begleitwagen ("accompanying vehicle"),[9] or BW, to disguise its actual purpose, given that Germany was still theoretically bound by the Treaty of Versailles ban on tanks.[10] MAN, Krupp, and Rheinmetall-Borsig each developed prototypes,[8] with Krupp's being selected for further development.[11] The chassis had originally been designed with a six-wheeled Schachtellaufwerk interleaved-roadwheel suspension (as already adopted for German half-tracks), but the German Army amended this to a torsion bar system. Permitting greater vertical deflection of the roadwheels, this was intended to improve performance and crew comfort both on- and off-road.[11][12] However, due to the urgent requirement for the new tank, neither proposal was adopted, and Krupp instead equipped it with a simple leaf spring double-bogie suspension, with eight rubber-rimmed roadwheels per side. The prototype had a crew of five; the hull contained the engine bay to the rear, with the driver and radio operator, who doubled as the hull machine gunner, seated at the front-left and front-right, respectively. In the turret, the tank commander sat beneath his roof hatch, while the gunner was situated to the left of the gun breech and the loader to the right. The torque shaft ran from the rear engine to the transmission box in the front hull between the driver and radio operator. To keep the shaft clear of the rotary base junction, which provided electrical power to the turret including the motor to turn it, the turret was offset 66.5 mm (2.62 in) to the left of the chassis center line, and the engine was moved 152.4 mm (6.00 in) to the right. Due to the asymmetric layout, the right side of the tank contained the bulk of its stowage volume, which was taken up by ready-use ammunition lockers.[11] Accepted into service under the designation Versuchskraftfahrzeug 622 (Vs.Kfz. 622), "experimental motor vehicle 622",[10] production began in 1936 at Fried. Krupp Grusonwerk AG factory at Magdeburg.[13] Ausf. A to Ausf. F1 Panzer IV Ausf. A in 1939 Panzer IV Ausf. C 1943 The first mass-produced version of the Panzer IV was the Ausführung A (abbreviated to Ausf. A, meaning "Variant A"), in 1936. It was powered by a Maybach HL108 TR, producing 250 PS (183.87 kW), and used the SGR 75 transmission with five forward gears and one reverse,[14] achieving a maximum road speed of 31 kilometres per hour (19.26 mph).[15] As main armament, the vehicle mounted the short-barreled, howitzer-like 75 mm (2.95 in) Kampfwagenkanone 37 L/24 (7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24) tank gun, which was a low-velocity weapon mainly designed to fire high-explosive shells.[16] Against armored targets, firing the Panzergranate (armor-piercing shell) at 430 metres per second (1,410 ft/s) the KwK 37 could penetrate 43 millimetres (1.69 in), inclined at 30 degrees, at ranges of up to 700 metres (2,300 ft).[17] A 7.92 mm (0.31 in) MG 34 machine gun was mounted coaxially with the main weapon in the turret, while a second machine gun of the same type was mounted in the front plate of the hull.[11] The main weapon and coaxial machine gun were sighted with a Turmzielfernrohr 5b optic while the hull machine gun was sighted with a Kugelzielfernrohr 2 optic.[18] The Ausf. A was protected by
14.5 mm (0.57 in) of steel armor on the front plate of the chassis, and 20 mm (0.79 in) on the turret. This was only capable of stopping artillery fragments, small-arms fire, and light anti-tank projectiles.[19] A total of 35 A versions were produced.[10] The 300 horsepower Maybach HL 120TRM engine used in most Panzer IV production models. PzKpfw IV Ausf. D In 1937 production moved to the Ausf. B.[10] Improvements included the replacement of the original engine with the more powerful 300 PS (220.65 kW) Maybach HL 120TR, and the transmission with the new SSG 75 transmission, with six forward gears and one reverse gear. Despite a weight increase to 16 t (18 short tons), this improved the tank's speed to 42 kilometres per hour (26.10 mph).[20] The glacis plate was augmented to a maximum thickness of 30 millimetres (1.18 in),[19] while a new driver's visor was installed on the straightened hull front plate, and the hull-mounted machine gun was replaced by a covered pistol port and visor flap.[20] The superstructure width and ammunition stowage were reduced to save weight.[20] A new commander's cupola was introduced which was adopted from the Panzer III Ausf. C.[20] A Nebelkerzenabwurfvorrichtung (smoke grenade discharger rack) was mounted on the rear of the hull starting in July 1938[20] and was back fitted to earlier Ausf. A and Ausf. B chassis starting in August 1938.[21] Forty-two Panzer IV Ausf. Bs were manufactured.[10] The Ausf. C replaced the B in 1938.[10][22] This saw the turret armor increased to 30 mm (1.18 in), which brought the tank's weight to 18.14 t (20.00 short tons).[22] After assembling 40 Ausf. Cs, starting with chassis number 80341, the engine was replaced with the improved HL 120TRM. The last of the 140 Ausf. Cs was produced in August 1939. Production changed to the Ausf. D; this variant, of which 248 vehicles were produced, reintroduced the hull machine gun and changed the turret's internal gun mantlet to a 35 mm (1.38 in)[23] thick external mantlet.[22] Again, protection was upgraded, this time by increasing side armor to 20 mm (0.79 in).[16] As the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 came to an end, it was decided to scale up production of the Panzer IV, which was adopted for general use on 27 September 1939 as the Sonderkraftfahrzeug 161 (Sd.Kfz. 161).[10] In response to the difficulty of penetrating the thick armor of British infantry tanks (Matilda and Matilda II) during the Battle of France, the Germans had tested a 50 mm (1.97 in) gun — based on the 5 cm Pak 38 anti-tank gun — on a Panzer IV Ausf. D. However, with the rapid German victory in France, the original order of 80 tanks was cancelled before they entered production.[24] In October 1940, the Ausf. E was introduced. This had 30 millimetres (1.18 in) of armor on the bow plate, while a 30-millimetre (1.18 in) appliqué steel plate was added to the glacis as an interim measure. A new driver's visor, adopted from the Sturmgeschütz III was installed on the hull front plate.[25] A new commander's cupola, adopted from the Panzer III Ausf. G, was relocated forward on the turret eliminating the bulge underneath the cupola.[26] Older model Panzer IV tanks were retrofitted with these features when returned to the manufacturer for servicing. 206 Ausf. Es were produced between October 1940 and April 1941.[3] The short-barreled Panzer IV Ausf. F1. In April 1941, production of the Panzer IV Ausf. F started. It featured 50 mm (1.97 in) single-plate armor on the turret and hull, as opposed to the appliqué armor added to the Ausf. E,[22] and a further increase in side armor to 30 mm (1.18 in).[27] The main engine exhaust muffler was shortened and a compact auxiliary generator muffler was mounted to its left.[25] The weight of the vehicle was now 22.3 tonnes (24.6 short tons), which required a corresponding modification of track width from 380 to 400 mm (14.96 to 15.75 in) to reduce ground pressure. The wider tracks also facilitated the fitting of track shoe "ice sprags", and the rear idler wheel and front sprocket were modified.[28] The
designation Ausf. F was changed in the meantime to Ausf. F1, after the distinct new model, the Ausf. F2, appeared. A total of 471 Ausf. F (later temporarily called F1) tanks were produced from April 1941 to March 1942.[3] Ausf. F2 to Ausf. J On 26 May 1941, mere weeks before Operation Barbarossa, during a conference with Hitler, it was decided to improve the Panzer IV's main armament. Krupp was awarded the contract to integrate again the 50 mm (1.97 in) Pak 38 L/60 gun into the turret. The first prototype was to be delivered by 15 November 1941.[29] Within months, the shock of encountering the Soviet T-34 medium and KV-1 heavy tanks necessitated a new, much more powerful tank gun.[30] In November 1941, the decision to up-gun the Panzer IV to the 50-millimetre (1.97 in) gun was dropped, and instead Krupp was contracted in a joint development to modify Rheinmetall's pending 75 mm (2.95 in) anti-tank gun design, later known as 7.5 cm Pak 40 L/46. Because the recoil length was too great for the tank's turret, the recoil mechanism and chamber were shortened. This resulted in the 75-millimetre (2.95 in) KwK 40 L/43.[31] When the new KwK 40 was loaded with the Pzgr. 39 armor-piercing shell, the new gun fired the AP shell at some 750 m/s (2,460 ft/s), a substantial 74% increase over the howitzer-like KwK 37 L/24 gun's 430 m/s (1,410 ft/s) muzzle velocity.[28] Initially, the KwK 40 gun was mounted with a single-chamber, ball-shaped muzzle brake, which provided just under 50% of the recoil system's braking ability.[32] Firing the Panzergranate 39, the KwK 40 L/43 could penetrate 77 mm (3.03 in) of steel armor at a range of 1,830 m (6,000 ft).[33] The longer 7.5 cm guns were a mixed blessing. In spite of the designers' efforts to conserve weight, the new weapon made the vehicle nose-heavy to such an extent that the forward suspension springs were under constant compression. This resulted in the tank tending to sway even when no steering was being applied, an effect compounded by the introduction of the Ausführung H in March 1943.[34] The 1942 Panzer IV Ausf. F2 was an upgrade of the Ausf. F, fitted with the KwK 40 L/43 anti-tank gun to counter Soviet T-34 medium and KV heavy tanks. The Ausf. F tanks that received the new, longer, KwK 40 L/43 gun were temporarily named Ausf. F2 (with the designation Sd.Kfz. 161/1). The tank increased in weight to 23.6 tonnes (26.0 short tons). Differences between the Ausf. F1 and the Ausf. F2 were mainly associated with the change in armament, including an altered gun mantlet, internal travel lock for the main weapon, new gun cradle, new Turmzielfernrohr 5f optic for the L/43 weapon, modified ammunition stowage, and discontinuing of the Nebelkerzenabwurfvorrichtung in favor of turret mounted Nebelwurfgerät.[35] Three months after beginning production, the Panzer IV Ausf. F2 was renamed Ausf. G.[36] During its production run from March 1942 to June 1943, the Panzer IV Ausf. G went through further modifications, including another armor upgrade which consisted of a 30-millimetre (1.18 in) face-hardened appliqué steel plate welded (later bolted) to the glacis—in total, frontal armor was now 80 mm (3.15 in) thick.[37] This decision to increase frontal armor was favorably received according to troop reports on 8 November 1942, despite technical problems of the driving system due to added weight. At this point, it was decided that 50% of Panzer IV production would be fitted with 30 mm (1.18 in) thick additional armor plates. On 5 January 1943, Hitler decided that all Panzer IV should have 80 mm (3.15 in) frontal armor.[38] To simplify production, the vision ports on either side of the turret and the loader's forward vision port in the turret front were removed, while a rack for two spare road wheels was installed on the track guard on the left side of the hull. Complementing this, brackets for seven spare track links were added to the glacis plate. For operation in high temperatures, the engine's ventilation was improved by creating slits over the engine deck to the rear of the chassis, and cold
weather performance was boosted by adding a device to heat the engine's coolant, as well as a starter fluid injector. A new light replaced the original headlight and the signal port on the turret was removed.[39] On 19 March 1943, the first Panzer IV with Schürzen skirts on its sides and turret was exhibited.[40] The double hatch for the commander's cupola was replaced by a single round hatch from very late model Ausf. G. and the cupola was up-armored from 50 mm (1.97 in) to 95 mm (3.74 in). In April 1943, the KwK 40 L/43 was replaced by the longer 75-millimetre (2.95 in) KwK 40 L/48 gun, with a redesigned multi-baffle muzzle brake with improved recoil efficiency.[41] The longer L/48 resulted in the introduction of the Turmzielfernrohr 5f/1 optic.[42] A Panzer IV Ausf H at the Musée des Blindés in Saumur, France, with its distinctive Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine coating, turret skirts, and wire-mesh side-skirts. The next version, the Ausf. H, began production in June 1943[3] and received the designation Sd. Kfz. 161/2. The integrity of the glacis armor was improved by manufacturing it as a single 80-millimetre (3.15 in) plate. A reinforced final drive with higher gear ratios was introduced.[43] To prevent adhesion of magnetic anti-tank mines, which the Germans feared would be used in large numbers by the Allies, Zimmerit paste was added to all the vertical surfaces of the tank's armor.[44] The turret roof was reinforced from 10-millimetre (0.39 in) to 16-millimetre (0.63 in) and 25-millimetre (0.98 in) segments.[43] The vehicle's side and turret were further protected by the addition of 5-millimetre (0.20 in) hull skirts and 8-millimetre (0.31 in) turret skirts.[4][45] This resulted in the elimination of the vision ports located on the hull side,[43] as the skirts obstructed their view. During the Ausf. H's production run, its rubber-tired return rollers were replaced with cast steel, a lighter cast front sprocket and rear idler wheel gradually replaced the previous components,[43] the hull was fitted with triangular supports for the easily damaged side skirts, the Nebelwurfgeraet was discontinued, and a mount in the turret roof, designed for the Nahverteidigungswaffe, was plugged by a circular armored plate due to initial production shortages of this weapon.[46][47] These modifications meant that the tank's weight increased to 25 tonnes (27.56 short tons). In spite of a new six-speed SSG 77 transmission adopted from the Panzer III, top speed dropped to as low as 16 km/h (10 mph) on cross country terrain. An experimental version of the Ausf H was fitted with a hydrostatic transmission but was not put into production.[34] The Ausf. J was the final production model, and was greatly simplified compared to earlier variants to speed construction. This shows an exported Finnish model. Despite addressing the mobility problems introduced by the previous model, the final production version of the Panzer IV—the Ausf. J—was considered a retrograde from the Ausf. H. Born of necessity, to replace heavy losses, it was greatly simplified to speed production.[48] The electric generator that powered the tank's turret traverse was removed, so the turret had to be rotated manually. The turret traversing mechanism was modified and fitted with a second gear which made hand-operation easier when the vehicle was on sloping terrain.[49] On reasonably level ground, hand operation at 4 seconds to traverse to 12.5° and 29.5 seconds to traverse to 120° was achieved.[49] The resulting space was later used for the installation of an auxiliary 200-litre (53 US gal) fuel tank; road range was thereby increased to 320 km (200 mi),[50] The remaining pistol and vision ports on the turret side hatches were removed, and the engine's radiator housing was simplified by changing the slanted sides to straight sides.[47] Three sockets with screw threads for mounting a 2-ton jib boom crane were welded on the turret roof while the hull roof was thickened from 11-millimetre (0.43 in) to 16-millimetre (0.63 in).[51] In addition, the cylindrical muffler was
replaced by two flame-suppressing mufflers. In June 1944 Wa Prüf 6 had decided that because bomb damage at Panzerfirma Krupp in Essen had seriously jeopardized tank production, all plates which should have been face-hardened for the Panzer IV were instead made with rolled homogeneous armour plate.[51] By late 1944, Zimmerit was no longer being applied to German armored vehicles, and the Panzer IV's side-skirts had been replaced by wire mesh, while the gunner's forward vision port in the turret front was eliminated[52] and the number of return rollers was reduced from four to three to further speed-up production.[53] In a bid to augment the Panzer IV's firepower, an attempt was made to mate a Schmalturm turret — carrying the longer 75 mm (2.95 in) L/70 tank gun from the developing Panther Ausf. F tank design, and partly developed by Rheinmetall from early 1944 onwards — to a Panzer IV hull. This failed and confirmed that the chassis had reached the limit of its adaptability in both weight and available volume.[48] Production Panzer IV production by year[3] Date Number of vehicles Variant (Ausf.) 1937–1939 262 A – D 1940 290 (-24) D, E 1941 480 (+17) E, F 1942 994 F, G 1943 2,983 G, H 1944 3,125 H, J 1945 ~435 J Total ~8,569 all The Panzer IV was originally intended to be used only on a limited scale, so initially Krupp was its sole manufacturer. Prior to the Polish campaign, only 217 Panzer IVs had been produced: 35 Ausf. A; 42 Ausf. B; and 140 Ausf. C; in 1941, production was extended to Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik ("VOMAG") (located in the city of Plauen) and the Nibelungenwerk in the Austrian city of St. Valentin.[3] In 1941, an average of 39 tanks per month were built; this rose to 83 in 1942, 252 in 1943, and 300 in 1944. However, in December 1943, Krupp's factory was diverted to manufacture the Sturmgeschütz IV and, in the spring of 1944, the Vomag factory began production of the Jagdpanzer IV, leaving the Nibelungenwerk as the only plant still assembling the Panzer IV.[54] With the slow collapse of German industry under pressure from Allied air and ground offensives—in October 1944 the Nibelungenwerk factory was severely damaged during a bombing raid—by March and April 1945, production had fallen to pre-1942 levels, with only around 55 tanks per month coming off the assembly lines.[55] Panzer IV: comparison of key production features[56] Version Main gun Superstructure armour mm (inch) Hull armour mm (inch) Turret armour mm (inch) Weight tonnes (long tons; short tons) Engine Notes F S R F S R F S R Ausf. many of which were lost on the Eastern Front between the final months of 1942 and the beginning of 1943 during the battles around Stalingrad, at which the Hungarian and Romanian troops there were almost annihilated by the attacking Soviet forces.[58] Romania received approximately 120 Panzer IV tanks of different models throughout the entire war.[59] To arm Bulgaria, Germany supplied 46[60] or 91[61] Panzer IVs, and offered Italy 12 tanks to form the nucleus of a new Italian Army armored division. These were used to train Italian tank crews while the-then Italian leader Benito Mussolini was deposed shortly after the Allied conquest of Sicily but were then retaken by Germany during its occupation of Italy in mid-1943.[60] The Falangist Spanish government petitioned for 100 Panzer IVs in March 1943 but only 20 were ever delivered by December that same year.[62] Finland bought 30 but only received 15 in 1944 and in the same year a second batch of 62[60] or 72[61] was sent to Hungary (although 20 of these were subsequently diverted to replace German military losses).[61] The Croatian Ustashe Militia received 10 Ausf. F1 and 5 Ausf. G in the autumn of 1944.[63] In total, 297 Panzer IVs of all models were delivered to Germany's allies.[64] Combat history A Panzer IV Ausf. E with hits on the turret and the edge of the gun barrel. The Panzer IV was the only German tank to remain in both production and combat throughout World War II,[65][66] and measured over the entire war it comprised 30% of the Wehrmacht's total tank strength.[67] Although in service by early 1939, in time for the occupation of Czechoslovakia,[68] at the start of the war the majority of German armor was made up of obsolete Panzer Is and Panzer IIs.[69] The Panzer I in particular had already proved inferior to Soviet tanks, such as the T-26, during the Spanish Civil War.[70] Poland, Western Front and North Africa (1939–1942) When Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, its armored corps was composed of 1,445 Panzer Is, 1,223 Panzer IIs, 98 Panzer IIIs and 211 Panzer IVs; the more modern vehicles amounted to less than 10% of Germany's armored strength.[71] The 1st Panzer Division had a roughly equal balance of types, with 17 Panzer Is, 18 Panzer IIs, 28 Panzer IIIs, and 14 Panzer IVs per battalion. The remaining panzer divisions were heavy with obsolete models, equipped as they were with 34 Panzer Is, 33 Panzer IIs, 5 Panzer IIIs, and 6 Panzer IVs per battalion.[72] Although the Polish Army possessed less than 200 tanks capable of penetrating the German light tanks, Polish anti-tank guns proved more of a threat, reinforcing German faith in the value of the close-support Panzer IV.[73] A British Crusader tank passing a burning German Panzer IV during Operation Crusader, late 1941. Despite increased production of the medium Panzer IIIs and IVs prior to the German invasion of France on 10 May 1940, the majority of German tanks were still light types. According to Heinz Guderian, the Wehrmacht invaded France with 523 Panzer Is, 955 Panzer IIs, 349 Panzer IIIs, 278 Panzer IVs, 106 Panzer 35(t)s and 228 Panzer 38(t)s.[74] Through the use of tactical radios[75] and superior tactics, the Germans were able to outmaneuver and defeat French and British armor.[76] However, Panzer IVs armed with the KwK 37 L/24 75-millimetre (2.95 in) tank gun found it difficult to engage French tanks such as the Somua S35 and Char B1.[77] The Somua S35 had a maximum armor thickness of 55 mm (2.2 in),[78] while the KwK 37 L/24 could only penetrate 43 mm (1.7 in) at a range of 700 m (2,300 ft).[17] The British Matilda II was also heavily armored, with at least 70 mm (2.76 in) of steel on the front and turret and a minimum of 65 mm on the sides,[79] but were few in number. Although the Panzer IV was deployed to North Africa with the German Afrika Korps, until the longer gun variant began production, the tank was outperformed by the Panzer III with respect to armor penetration.[80] Both the Panzer III and IV had difficulty in penetrating the British Matilda II's thick armor, while
the Matilda's 40-mm QF 2 pounder gun could knock out either German tank; the Matilda II's major disadvantage was its low speed.[81] By August 1942, Rommel had only received 27 Panzer IV Ausf. F2s, armed with the L/43 gun, which he deployed to spearhead his armored offensives.[81] The longer gun could penetrate all American and British tanks in theater at ranges of up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft), by that time the most heavily armored of which was the M3 Grant.[82] Although more of these tanks arrived in North Africa between August and October 1942, their numbers were insignificant compared to the amount of matériel shipped to British forces.[83] The Panzer IV also took part in the invasion of Yugoslavia and the invasion of Greece in early 1941.[84] Eastern Front (1941–1945) A PzKpfw IV Ausf. H of the 12th Panzer Division carrying Schürzen skirting operating on the Eastern Front in the USSR, 1944. With the launching of Operation Barbarossa on 22 June 1941, the unanticipated appearance of the KV-1 and T-34 tanks prompted an upgrade of the Panzer IV's 75 mm (2.95 in) gun to a longer, high-velocity 75 mm gun suitable for anti-tank use. This meant that it could now penetrate the T-34 at ranges of up to 1,200 m (3,900 ft) at any angle.[85] The 75 mm KwK 40 L/43 gun on the Panzer IV could penetrate a T-34 at a variety of impact angles beyond 1,000 m (3,300 ft) range and up to 1,600 m (5,200 ft).[86] Shipment of the first model to mount the new gun, the Ausf. F2, began in spring 1942, and by the summer offensive there were around 135 Panzer IVs with the L/43 tank gun available. At the time, these were the only German tanks that could defeat T-34 or KV-1 with sheer firepower.[87] They played a crucial role in the events that unfolded between June 1942 and March 1943,[88] and the Panzer IV became the mainstay of the German panzer divisions.[89] Although in service by late September 1942, the Tiger I was not yet numerous enough to make an impact and suffered from serious teething problems, while the Panther was not delivered to German units in the Soviet Union until May 1943.[90] The extent of German reliance on the Panzer IV during this period is reflected by their losses; 502 were destroyed on the Eastern Front in 1942.[91] The Panzer IV continued to play an important role during operations in 1943, including at the Battle of Kursk. Newer types, such as the Panther, were still experiencing crippling reliability problems that restricted their combat efficiency,[92] so much of the effort fell to the 841 Panzer IVs that took part in the battle.[93] Throughout 1943, the German army lost 2,352 Panzer IVs on the Eastern Front;[94] some divisions were reduced to 12–18 tanks by the end of the year.[89] In 1944, a further 2,643 Panzer IVs were destroyed, and such losses were becoming increasingly difficult to replace.[95] Nevertheless, due to a shortage of replacement Panther tanks, the Panzer IV continued to form the core of Germany's armored divisions, including elite units such as the II SS Panzer Corps, through 1944.[96] In January 1945, 287 Panzer IVs were lost on the Eastern Front. It is estimated that combat against Soviet forces accounted for 6,153 Panzer IVs, or about 75% of all Panzer IV losses during the war.[97] Western Front (1944–45) A Panzer IV Ausf. G of the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, 1942. Panzer IVs comprised around half of the available German tank strength on the Western Front prior to the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944.[98] Most of the 11 panzer divisions that saw action in Normandy initially contained an armored regiment of one battalion of Panzer IVs and another of Panthers, for a total of around 160 tanks, although Waffen-SS panzer divisions were generally larger and better equipped than their Heer counterparts.[99][100] Regular upgrades to the Panzer IV had helped to maintain its reputation as a formidable opponent.[98] The bocage countryside in Normandy favored defense, and German tanks and anti-tank guns inflicted very heavy
casualties on Allied armor during the Normandy campaign, despite the overwhelming Allied air superiority. German counter-attacks were blunted in the face of Allied artillery, infantry-held anti-tank weapons, tank destroyers and anti-tank guns, as well as the ubiquitous fighter-bomber aircraft.[101] The side skirt armor could predetonate shaped charge anti-tank weapons such as the British PIAT, but could be pulled away by rugged terrain. German tankers in all theaters were "frustrated by the way these skirts were easily torn off when going through dense brush".[98] Pz.Kpfw-IV in Belgrade Military Museum, Serbia. The Allies had also been improving their tanks; the widely used American-designed M4 Sherman medium tank, while mechanically reliable, repairable, and available in large numbers, suffered from an inadequate gun in terms of armor-piercing.[102] Against earlier-model Panzer IVs, it could hold its own, but with its 75 mm M3 gun, struggled against the late-model Panzer IV.[103] The late-model Panzer IV's 80 mm (3.15 in) frontal hull armor could easily withstand hits from the 75 mm (2.95 in) weapon on the Sherman at normal combat ranges,[104] though the turret remained vulnerable. The British up-gunned the Sherman with their highly effective 76 mm QF 17-pounder anti-tank gun, resulting in the Firefly;[105] although this was the only Allied tank capable of dealing with all current German tanks at normal combat ranges, few (342) were available in time for the Normandy invasion.[102] One Sherman in every British troop of four was a Firefly. By the end of the Normandy campaign, a further 550 Fireflies were built.[106] which was enough to make good any losses.[107] A second British tank equipped with the 17-pdr gun, the Cruiser Mk VIII Challenger, could not participate in the initial landings having to wait for port facilities to be ready to land. It was not until July 1944 that American Shermans fitted with the 76 mm gun M1 gun achieved a parity in firepower with the Panzer IV.[108][109] By 29 August 1944, as the last surviving German troops of Fifth Panzer Army and Seventh Army began retreating towards Germany, the twin cataclysms of the Falaise Pocket and the Seine crossing cost the Wehrmacht dearly. Of the 2,300 tanks and assault guns it had committed to Normandy (including around 750 Panzer IVs[110]), over 2,200 had been lost.[111] Field Marshal Walter Model reported to Hitler that his panzer divisions had remaining, on average, five or six tanks each.[111] During the winter of 1944–45, the Panzer IV was one of the most numerous tanks in the Ardennes offensive, where further heavy losses—as often due to fuel shortages as to enemy action—impaired major German armored operations in the West thereafter.[112] The Panzer IVs that took part were survivors of the battles in France between June and September 1944,[dubious – discuss] with around 260 additional Panzer IV Ausf. Js issued as reinforcements.[110] Other users A captured German Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G used for anti-tank weapons testing by the British Eighth Army in Italy in 1943. Finland bought 15 new Panzer IV Ausf. Js in 1944 for 5,000,000 Finnish markkas each.[113] The remainder of an order for 40 tanks and some StuG IIIs were not delivered and neither were necessary German tank instructors provided. The tanks arrived too late to see action against the Soviet Union but instead ended up being used against Nazi Germany during their withdrawal through Lapland. After the war, they served as training tanks and one portrayed a Soviet KV-1 tank in the movie The Unknown Soldier in 1955.[citation needed] The additional weight, going from the 18.4 tons (Ausf. A) to about 25 tons (Ausf. J), of these modifications strained the relatively light chassis. The overloaded and primitive leaf-spring suspension gave its crew a shaky ride, earning the Panzer IV the nickname "Ravistin" ("Shaker") in Finnish service. This not only affected general crew comfort, but also hampered the accurate aiming of the main gun. What exactly caused this vibration that gave the PzKw IV Ausf. J
such a bad name among Finnish tank crews remains somewhat unclear, but the poor suspension seems to be the most likely suspect.[114] After 1945, Bulgaria incorporated its surviving Panzer IVs into defensive bunkers as gunpoints on its border with Turkey, along with Soviet T-34 turrets. This defensive line, known as the "Krali Marko Line", remained in use until the fall of communism in 1989.[citation needed] Twenty Panzer IV Ausf. Hs and ten StuG III Ausf. Gs were supplied to Spain in December 1943, a small fraction of what Spain had originally asked for. The Panzer IV represented the best tank in Spanish service between 1944 and 1954, and was deployed along with T-26s and Panzer Is. Spain sold 17 Panzer IVs to Syria in 1967, with the remaining three left conserved. These can be found in Madrid, Burgos and Santovenia de Pisuerga (Valladolid). Most of the tanks Romania had received were lost during combat between 1944 and 1945. These tanks, designated T4 in the army's inventory, were used by the Army's 2nd Armored Regiment. On 9 May 1945, only two Panzer IVs were left. Romania received another 50 captured Panzer IV tanks from the Red Army after the end of the war. These tanks were of many different models and were in very bad shape[59]—many of them were missing parts and the side-skirts. These German T4 tanks remained in service until 1950, when the Army decided to use only Soviet equipment. By 1954, all German tanks in Romanian military service had been scrapped. An ex-Syrian Panzer IV displayed at the AAF Tank Museum. While their numbers remain uncertain, Syria received around 60 Panzers that were refurbished in France between 1950 and 1952, followed by 50 others purchased from Czechoslovakia in 1954, per the Czechoslovakia-Syria arms deal.[115] A Soviet 12.7mm DShK machine gun on an anti-aircraft mount was retrofitted on the cupola. These ex-German tanks were used to shell Israeli settlements below the Golan Heights, together with Soviet-supplied T-34s, and were fired upon in 1965 during the Water War by Israeli Super Sherman and Centurion tanks.[112] Syria received 17 Panzer IVs from Spain, with these seeing combat during the Six-Day War in 1967.[116] Several of Syria's Panzer IVs were captured by the Israeli Army and donated to the Yad La-Shiryon museum. The AAF Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia later traded a US M5 Stuart light tank to the Latrun museum for one of the Czechoslovak-origin Panzer IVs, which is now an exhibit there.[117] In addition, Turkey was a buyer, with 35 Panzer IVs received until 4 May 1944 in exchange for some chromium ore. Delivery began with the Ausf. G and probably went on with Ausf. H versions.[118] Other sources state only 15 to 22 tanks were delivered in 1943, all of the Ausf G version.[119] Captured Panzer IVs in service The Soviet Army captured significant numbers of German armored vehicles, including Panzer IVs (its Russian designation was "T-4"). Some of them were pressed into temporary service and some others were used for driver or anti-tank training. Sometimes, captured tanks were used in different temporary units or as single tanks. While captured Tiger I/IIs and Panthers were only permitted to be used until they irrecoverably broke down, the simplicity of the Panzer IV and the large number of captured parts allowed for long-term repair and continued use. At least one captured Panzer IV Ausf. H was used by the Warsaw Tank Brigade of the Polish 2nd Corps in Italy during 1944. The 1st GMR (Groupement Mobile de Reconnaissance) of the FFI (French Forces of the Interior), later called 'Escadron Autonome de Chars Besnier', was equipped in December 1944 with at least one Panzer IV. Variants A Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer, based on the Panzer IV chassis, mounting the 75 mm Pak L/48 anti-tank gun. A Sturmpanzer IV infantry-support gun The Wirbelwind self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. In keeping with the wartime German design expediencies of mounting an existing anti-tank gun on a convenient chassis to give mobility, several tank destroyers and infantry support guns were
built around the Panzer IV hull. Both the Jagdpanzer IV, initially armed with the 75-millimetre (2.95 in) L/48 tank gun,[120] and the Krupp-manufactured Sturmgeschütz IV, which was the casemate of the Sturmgeschütz III mounted on the body of the Panzer IV,[121] proved highly effective in defense. Cheaper and faster to construct than tanks, but with the disadvantage of a very limited gun traverse, around 1,980 Jagdpanzer IVs[122] and 1,140 Sturmgeschütz IVs[123] were produced. Another tank destroyer, the Panzer IV/70, used the same basic 75-millimeter L/70 gun that was mounted on the Panther.[124][125] Another variant of the Panzer IV was the Panzerbefehlswagen IV (Pz. Bef. Wg. IV) command tank. This conversion entailed the installation of additional radio sets with associated mounting racks, transformers, junction boxes, wiring, antennas and an auxiliary electrical generator. To make room for the new equipment, ammunition stowage was reduced from 87 to 72 rounds. The vehicle could coordinate with nearby armor, infantry or even aircraft. Seventeen Panzerbefehlswagen were built on Ausf. J chassis in August and September 1944,[3] while another 88 were based on refurbished chassis.[126] The Panzerbeobachtungswagen IV (Pz. Beob. Wg. IV) was an artillery observation vehicle built on the Panzer IV chassis. This, too, received new radio equipment and an electrical generator, installed in the left rear corner of the fighting compartment. Panzerbeobachtungswagens worked in cooperation with Wespe and Hummel self-propelled artillery batteries.[127] Also based on the Panzer IV chassis was the Sturmpanzer IV (called "Brummbär" by Allied intelligence) 150-millimetre (5.91 in) infantry-support self-propelled gun. These vehicles were primarily issued to four Sturmpanzer units (Numbers 216, 217, 218 and 219) and used during the battle of Kursk and in Italy in 1943. Two separate versions of the Sturmpanzer IV existed, one without a machine gun in the mantlet and one with a machine gun mounted on the mantlet of the casemate.[128] Furthermore, a 105-millimetre (4.13 in) artillery gun was mounted in an experimental demountable turret on a Panzer IV chassis. This variant was called the Heuschrecke ("grasshopper").[129] Another 105 mm artillery/anti-tank prototype was the 10.5 cm K (gp.Sfl.) nicknamed Dicker Max. Four different self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles were built on the Panzer IV hull. The Flakpanzer IV "Möbelwagen" ("moving van") was armed with a 37-millimetre (1.46 in) anti-aircraft cannon; 240 were built between 1944 and 1945. In late 1944 a new Flakpanzer, the Wirbelwind ("whirlwind"), was designed, with enough armor to protect the gun's crew in a rotating turret, armed with the quadruple 20 mmFlakvierling anti-aircraft cannon system; at least 100 were manufactured. Sixty-five (out of an order for 100) similar vehicles with a single 37 mm anti-aircraft cannon were built named Ostwind ("East wind"). This vehicle was designed to replace the Wirbelwind. The final model was the Flakpanzer IV Kugelblitz, of which only five pilot vehicles were built. This vehicle featured an enclosed turret armed with twin 30-millimetre (1.18 in) Rheinmetall-Borsig MK 103 aircraft cannon.[130] Although not a direct modification of the Panzer IV, some of its components, in conjunction with parts from the Panzer III, were utilized to make one of the most widely used self-propelled artillery chassis of the war—the Geschützwagen III/IV. This chassis was the basis of the Hummel, of which 666 were built, and also the 88-millimetre (3.46 in) gun-armed Nashorn tank destroyer, with 473 manufactured.[131] To resupply self-propelled howitzers in the field, 150 ammunition carriers were manufactured on the Geschützwagen III/IV chassis.[68] Another variant was the Bergepanzer IV armored recovery vehicle. Some were believed to have been converted locally,[132] 21 were converted from hulls returned for repair between October 1944 and January 1945. The conversion involved removing the turret and adding a wooden plank cover with an access hatch over the turret
ring and the addition of a 2-ton jib crane and rigid towing bars.[133] Panzer IV mit hydrostatischem antrieb Another rare variant was the Panzer IV mit hydrostatischem antrieb. In 1944, Zahnradfabrik (ZF) Augsburg plant produced a prototype with an unusual drive concept. A Panzer IV Ausf. H tank received a fluid drive instead of the normal gearbox. Two oil pumps were installed behind the engine, which in turn drove two oil engines. An axial engine drive transmitted the power to the rear drive wheels via a reduction gear. Instead of the two steering levers, the driver had a crescent-shaped steering wheel with the steering movements of which two steering cylinders were operated, which in turn regulated the volume of the oil pumps and thus regulated the adjacent force on the two drive wheels. The only prototype built was not used and was shipped to America after the war to be subjected to driving tests. These finally had to be discontinued due to a lack of spare parts. The only surviving vehicle is now in United States Army Ordnance Training and Heritage Center in Maryland.[134] Production models Production models of Panzer IV[3] Name Production details Ausf.A, 1/BW (Sd.Kfz.161) 35 produced by Krupp-Gruson, between November 1937 and June 1938. A Review on the Effect of Rooting Media on Rooting and Growth of Cutting Propagated Grape (Vitis vinifera L)
Authored by Abera Jaleta
Tumblr media
Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the important commercial subtropical vine crops grown all over the world except at a few places with high altitude and extreme temperature [1]. It is native to the Mediterranean region, central Europe, and southwestern Asia, from Morocco and Portugal north to southern Germany and east to northern Iran. It belongs to the family Vitaceae, is one of the oldest, most extensively cultivated and economically significant fruit crops in the world [2,3].
The three major uses of grapes are; wine making, fresh fruit (table grapes) and dried fruit (raisins) production. It can be used for making wine, jam, juice, jelly, grape seed extract, ethanol, raisins, vinegar, grape seed oil, tartaric acid, fertilizer, grape derived antioxidant compounds (polyphenols, resveratrol) and etc. Grape also associated with prevention of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, allergies, diabetes, constipation etc. [4].
It is a vine crop and trained on wires on both sides of plant. It is a short duration crop and consumed as fresh and in dried form [5]. Global grape production currently amounts to more than 75 million metric tons per year. Today there are over 18 million acres of cultivated vineyards worldwide. The top 5 grape producing counties are China, Italy, United States, France and Spain respectively, while Ethiopia is 77th in the world. In Ethiopia, the total grape production, harvested area and yield of grape in the year 2014 was reached 5118 tones, 2544 ha and 20123 hectogram ha-1, respectively [6].
Grape propagation for commercial vineyards includes the use of cuttings, rooting, budding, layers and grafts [7]. Cutting is one of the extensively practiced means of vegetative propagation of plants in horticulture industry [8] and is the most important practices in viticulture [9]. It has many advantages such as being economical [1], require a limited space, simple [8,10], rapid for dissemination of selected clones or new varieties resulting from breeding programs [8,11]. It maintains true to type varietal characteristics [7,12,13]. Cutting is highly practical and economically important. It is used extensively to propagate ornamental plants, including deciduous types, broad-leaved evergreens and coniferous forms. Fruits such as grapes and figs have been propagated in this manner since ancient times [14]. Grapevines are very easy to grow from cuttings [8,13]. It is well known that in comparison to soft wood cuttings, grapes are generally propagated through hardwood cuttings [8]. The main reasons are due to its highest success rate [9,15] without the use of special rooting technique, least expensive and easiest method of vegetative propagation [12,13,16]. Cuttings can also be made from the stem, modified stem, roots or leaves [13].
Rooting media is one of the most important factors for rooted cutting production. It is one of the factors affecting rooting and growth of grape cuttings [4]. Types of media have significantly influenced the rooting and vegetative growth of cuttings. Growing media should be considered an essential part of the propagation system because rooting competency depends on the type of medium used. Rooting medium directly effect on quality and percentage of rooting [5]. Both the biological and physico-chemical characteristics of a potting medium affect plant and root growth [4]. It is known that good growth media provides a reservoir for plant nutrients, hold plant available water, and provide a means for gas exchange and good anchorage for the plants [17].
Objectives
• To review the effect of different growth media on rooting percentage, roots and shoot growth performance of grape cutting.
• To identify research gap on the effect of growth media on rooting and required growth performance of grape cutting.
Review on the Effect of Media on Rooting and Growth of Cuttings of Grape
The quality of potting mixes and field nursery soils is critical to cutting establishment [13]. It is known that good growth media provides a reservoir for plant nutrients, hold plant available water, and provide a means for gas exchange and good anchorage for the plants [17-19]. Lack of one or more of these beneficial characteristics leads to lower rooting percentage of cuttings or undesirable root shape and or form [18]. Thus, growers typically use peat, perlite, vermiculite, sand, fallow land and organic and inorganic composted materials to prepare nutritious potting mixtures [20]. Review on the effect of media on rooting and root growth parameters of grape cutting
Effect of media on rooting percentage of grape cutting: Factors affecting rooting of grape cuttings can be internal or external factors. Internal factors affecting rooting of cuttings include the amount of stored food in cuttings, the age and maturity of tissue, the formation of callus and adventitious roots and the presence of leaves and buds on cuttings. The external factors include rooting media, chemical and hormone treatments, light, temperature, mechanical treatment and mist spray [14]. Many papers present studies on the effect of various media for rooting cuttings. Vermiculite, perlite, and other products have been and are being tested with a view of improving plant propagation methods [14].
Many mixtures have been used as media for propagation. Cuttings of some plants which root poorly in sand, often root satisfactorily in mixtures of equal volumes of sand and peat. A mixture of equal parts of peat and sawdust was satisfactory for rooting of grape. A mixture which contained 1 part of peat, 1 part of sand, and 1 part of sawdust also proved satisfactory [21]. Any medium which holds moisture and supplies air is satisfactory. However, different media cause variations in root quality [22]. Of 43 kinds of plants propagated by stem cuttings, 30 produced finer and more flexible roots in peat moss than in sand due to the reduced aeration and increased moisture [14]. When cuttings are rooted in sand and peat moss or perlite and peat moss, the roots developed are well branched, slender and flexible, a type much more suited for digging and repotting [23]. Among some of the rooting media used in Ghana is a mixture of equal parts of coarse river sand and composted oil palm fiber. The fiber holds moisture while the sand keeps the mixture open and well aerated [24].
Tsipouridis et al. [25] studied on five rooting substrates (perlite (1-5 mm), peat, perlite + peat (50:50 %), sand and perlite (covered cuttings were additionally enclosed in a polyethylene bag)) and found rooting the 50:50 peats perlite mixtures gave a reasonable amount. Dvin et al. [18] also reported that using of coco peat + perlite media resulted in higher percentage of cuttings that rooted. Ibrahim [24], showed that sand/ fiber mixture gave a higher percentage of rooting success and produced stronger and more fibrous roots than sand, fiber or peat moss alone.
Muhammad et al. [5] observed that the statistical analysis depicts significance of potting media on the rooting percentage (P<0.05). CSb and CSBCP potting media had more than 70% rooting in comparison to CS and CSFYM potting media with less than 50%. The highest mean rooting percentage (84.44) was observed from grape cuttings grown in potting media having mixture of canal silt (25%), bagasse (50%) and coco peat (25%).
Research done by Krishna [1] as in (Table 1) better rooting obtained from sand + 10 or 20% coco peat for hardwood cuttings of both Dogridge and 1613C. While in case of soft wood cuttings, sand + 10% coco peat recorded significantly higher percentage of rooting in both varieties (Table 1). Ferrer et al. [26] reported that, percentage rooting was highest in sand (84.9), followed by soil (37.7) and the soil + sand mix (27.8). But the root development in sand was poor and the plants were not commercially acceptable. While the cuttings rooted in soil + sand mix produced better root and shoot development.

What other books do you like besides aftg?
harry potter and a song of ice and fire are the series that tricked me into thinking that i like fantasy.
then i like donna tartt, especially the secret history which i read for the first time a year ago and believe it or not it started a chain of books that eventually led me to aftg (though tsh is nothing like aftg). it also gave me this undying love of dark academia. some other da books i loved are gentlemen & players by joanne harris, black chalk by christopher yates and the history boys by alan bennett (i recommend listening to the radio play - i did it the other week and it totally blew my mind).
the talented mr ripley by patricia highsmiths used to be my favorite book for a long time but i detest all the subsequent books in the series.
i’m also often very impressed by well-written hard-hitting contemporaries like we need to talk about kevin by lionel shriver and a little life by hanya yanagihara. this latter book however you must not read unless you absolutely want to and are informed about all the tws.
gillian flynn is My Queen, though i have... opinions about how gone girl is perceived by young women. i like all of flynn’s books, but especially her short story the grownup which isn’t as well-known as her novels. it’s a quick and entertaining read and only goes to show that you don’t need many pages to craft well rounded characters. generally the flynn heroines are just next level.
over this year i’ve realized slowly and painfully that ya is probably not my thing but some ya books that i still enjoyed would be the folk of the air by holly black, montague siblings by mackenzi lee, radio silence by alice oseman, seven ways we lie by riley redgate (it got aroace rep which spoke to me more than oseman’s loveless) and fangirl by rainbow rowell.
i obviously like captive prince very much, but if you aren’t into problematic things in your ship that don’t get resolved you can try cs pacat’s other series - fence. these are ya graphic novels about gay fencers which reminded me a lot of aftg - both bcs of the sports setting and bcs of some character archetypes. no violence so far, but also no romance so far - so if you don’t like slow burn then it’s not for you.
some other mm books i liked but haven’t seen recommended on tumblr are a charm of magpies by kj charles and the dreamhealers by mca hogarth. now these two are like yin and yang: a charm of magpies is about a lord and a wizard who solve magical crimes in victorian england and it’s short, smutty and hilarious. the dreamhealers is a sci fi-ish slice of life series about two aliens who study xenopsychology and develop and intense relationship that has nothing to do with sex. it’s slow paced and tackles different serious topics, though the fact that the characters aren’t necessarily antropomorphic might hinder their relatability. there are four books in the series and it’s supposed to get Problematic at some point but i’ve read only the first one and loved it.
apart from these books i have a lot of favorite classics bcs until the age of 18 or so i used to read almost exclusively classics. but most of them aren’t english so i guess i’ll end this post now before it gets even longer :)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Read the full article
