Round 3 - Reptilia - Squamata
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Our second order of reptiles is Squamata, commonly called “lizards” and “snakes” (though snakes are in fact a suborder of lizards). This is a highly diverse order, containing the families… *deep breath*… Dibamidae (“blind skinks”), Diplodactylidae (diplodactylid geckos), Pygopodidae (“snake-lizards”), Carphodactylidae (“southern padless geckos”), Eublepharidae (“eyelid geckos”), Sphaerodactylidae (sphaerodactylid geckos), Phyllodactylidae (phyllodactylid geckos), Gekkonidae (“common geckos”), Scincidae (“skinks”), Xantusiidae (“night lizards”), Gerrhosauridae (“plated lizards”), Cordylidae (“girdled lizards”), Gymnophthalmidae (“spectacled lizards”), Teiidae (“whiptails” and “tegus”), Alopoglossidae (“teids” and “largescale lizards”), Lacertidae (“wall lizards”), Rhineuridae (“Florida Worm Lizard”), Bipedidae (“Mexican Mole Lizard”, “Four-toed Worm Lizard”, and “Three-toed Worm Lizard”), Blanidae (also “worm lizards”), Cadeidae (“Cuban keel-headed worm lizards”), Trogonophidae (“Palearctic worm lizards”), Amphisbaenidae (“worm lizards”), Shinisauridae (“Chinese Crocodile Lizard”), Lanthanotidae (“Earless Monitor Lizard”), Varanidae (“monitor lizards”), Helodermatidae (“beaded lizards”), Xenosauridae (“knob-scaled lizards”), Diploglossidae (“galliwasps”), Anniellidae (“American legless lizards”), Anguidae (“glass lizards” and “alligator lizards”), Chamaeleonidae (“chameleons”), Agamidae (“agamas” or “dragon lizards”), Leiocephalidae (“curlytail lizards”), Iguanidae (“iguanas” and “chuckwallas”), Hoplocercidae (“woodlizards” and “dwarf iguanas”), Crotaphytidae (“collared lizards”), Corytophanidae (“casquehead lizards”), Tropiduridae (“Neotropical ground lizards”), Phrynosomatidae (phrynosomatid lizards), Dactyloidae (“anoles”), Polychrotidae (“bush anoles”), Liolaemidae (liolaemid lizards), Leiosauridae (leiosaurid lizards), Opluridae (“Malagasy iguanas”), Leptotyphlopidae (“slender blind snakes”), Gerrhopilidae (“Indo-Malayan blindsnakes”), Xenotyphlopidae (“Malagasy blind snakes”), Typhlopidae (typhlopid blindsnakes), Anomalepididae (“primitive blind snakes”), Aniliidae (“American Pipe Snake”), Tropidophiidae (“dwarf boas”), Uropeltidae (“shield-tail snakes”), Anomochilidae (“dwarf pipesnakes”), Cylindrophiidae (“Asian pipesnakes”), Xenopeltidae (“sunbeam snakes”), Loxocemidae (“Mexican Python”), Pythonidae (pythons), Boidae (“boas”), Xenophidiidae (“spinejaw snakes”), Bolyeriidae (“Round Island boas”), Acrochordidae (“wart snakes”), Xenodermidae (“odd-scaled snakes”, “Borneo Red Snake”, “Dragon Snake”, and kin), Pareidae (“slug and snail-eating snakes”), Viperidae (vipers), Homalopsidae (“Indo-Australian water snakes”), Colubridae (colubrid snakes), Lamprophiidae (“house snakes”), and Elapidae (elapid snakes).
As this order is so diverse it would be hard to summarize their anatomy and behavior in one paragraph. Squamates have 4 legs ancestrally, but many groups have secondarily lost one pair or all of their legs. Some of these groups retain vestigial hind limbs beneath their skin. They can be herbivorous or carnivorous, lay eggs or give live birth, be terrestrial, fossorial, arboreal, semi-aquatic, or fully aquatic. Some utilize a flattened body or flaps of skin to glide. Some lack teeth, some have one or more teeth, and some have teeth designed for injecting venom. Venom, used in hunting and sometimes defense, evolved early in ambush predators of the clades Caenophidia, Anguimorpha, and Iguania, before the three groups split. It can be delivered via specialized fangs or saliva. Squamates “smell” via chemoreception, taking in scent particles on their tongue and transferring them to the Jacobson’s organ on the roof of their mouth, which then sends the information to the brain. Thus, when a squamate flicks its tongue in and out of its mouth, it is “taste-smelling” the air.
Squamata and Rhynchocephalia form the superorder Lepidosauria, which is the sister group to Archosauria, the clade that contains crocodilians and birds. As rhynchocephalians first appeared in the Early Triassic, the lineage leading to squamates must have also existed at the time. The oldest known squamate ancestor is Megachirella, which existed in the Middle Triassic. The oldest unambiguous fossils of squamates date to the Middle Jurassic, with the first appearance of many modern groups during this period.
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Many groups, such as the blind skinks and blind snakes, have greatly reduced eyes covered by a scale. These eyes can only sense light and dark. They have little need for eyes though, as they burrow underground and utilize their sense of smell and hearing to perceive the world.
Male squamates have hemipenes (two penises linked together), which are usually held inverted within their bodies, and are everted for reproduction via erectile tissue like a mammalian penis. Only one is used at a time, and some evidence indicates that males alternate use between copulations. Stay tuned for more Penis Facts™.
Snakes, the most recent suborder of lizards, are thought to have evolved from burrowing lizards during the Cretaceous Period. One of the most basal known snakes, Najash rionegrina, was a two-legged burrowing snake from the Late Cretaceous. However, snakes are not the only lizards to have lost their legs, and many other families seem to be following in their footsteps… or lack thereof.
The smallest squamate, and the smallest known reptile, is the Jaragua Sphaero (Sphaerodactylus ariasae), also known as the Jaragua Dwarf Gecko. The Jaragua Sphaero measures 14–18 mm (0.55–0.71 in) from the snout to the base of the tail and can fit on a US quarter. It has an average weight of 0.13 g.
Meanwhile, the longest squamate is the Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus), which can grow up to 6.5 m (21.4 ft), and weigh up to 75 kg (165 lb). This upper range is rare, however. It is surpassed in weight by the Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus) which can weigh up to 80 kg (176 lb), the Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) which can weigh up to 150 kg (330 lb), and the Burmese Python (Python bivittatus) with a record weight of 182.8 kg (403 lb) in one captive individual.
The largest squamates in history were the mosasaurs, a clade of lizards within the suborder Anguimorpha, which also includes the beaded lizards, legless lizards, monitor lizards, and others. These fully aquatic lizards were adapted for a life at sea, and ranged from the 1 m (3.3 ft) long Dallasaurus turneri, to the 12 meter (39 ft) long apex predator Mosasaurus hoffmannii.
Though they survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, many squamate species are now endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, the pet trade, invasive species, and other anthropogenic causes. Because of this, some squamate species have recently become extinct. Breeding programs exist in many zoos, both to retain reservoir populations and to boost populations in the wild through releases. Unfortunately, not every species is charismatic, and it can be hard to get the public invested and involved in squamate conservation.

Im gonna start designing warrior cats Hazel and Mori but I would love to ask. How does the naming system work?
I am SO glad you asked /pos.
Now, my time has come to spill my brainrot to you about the warrior cats naming system, at least how I personally handle it!
So, the names are comprised of a two words, a prefix and a suffix.
PREFIX
The prefix usually describes the cat’s appearance in some way, like their fur colour/pattern or physical size.
It also must make sense location-wise or socially appropriate if that makes sense? A parent wouldn't call their kitten Chaoskit (that's like calling your kid Doom lol) and a cat who lives around a humid and sandy desert wouldn't be able to call their kitten Penguinkit.
Prefixes are often nature, animal or colour words, but you can have more fun and choose something more vague or meaningful.
For example:
White- -> a (mostly) white cat
Small- -> an undersized cat (for their age/physical development; you can be funny and be ironic with this)
Berry- -> any variation of ginger, light brown, calico/tortoiseshell and black/white
Bear- -> a big and/or brown or black fur. If the AU was placed in the Arctic regions, white would also be okay (i.e polar bear), so with certain plants and animals, it just depends!
Natural compound words like Hazelnut (winks), Foxglove or Bluebell are okay to use as well; they are real life plants, after all! In this case, it's generally suggested to have shorter suffix after to make it easy to say :3 /nf
In my AU, only the word Star is off-limits, because Star is treated like an sacred honourific for "Leader".
SUFFIX
The suffix then describes the cat’s greatest skill, a personality trait, appearance (in this case, it must relate to the prefix) OR status in the colony.
-fur is for appearance or no-discernible skills (but this is not a bad thing)
-fire could honour the cat’s nature when in battle; it could also note a short temper
-tail could honour the cat’s balance nature; OR it could continue with the prefix (e.g. Curlytail -> a curly tail or Rosetail -> the tail is distinctively red)
-paw states the cat’s status as an apprentice (cat version of young teenager).  This means that they are still learning about the clan, how to hunt/fight, etc.
The few times this naming rule doesn’t fully apply is when outsiders (strays or house cats) join the clans as they may not want a name change. It's usually encouraged though. Carmen is too cool for that. Good for her.
NAME EXAMPLES
You might need to be careful with the more... vague or spiritual words but if you can justify why, most combinations are possible! Here are some examples to help you understand a bit more:
Mountaindew -> mountain (tall height with grey/brown fur) + dew (protector)
Garfield -> gar (as in the fish; grey or brown fur, might have spots) + field (open-minded... because fields are open DO YOU GET IT)
Smokeweed -> smoke (grey or dark grey fur) + weed (a friendly personality; basically a people person but as a cat... because weeds are everywhere. haha)
Songflower-> song (a vague word, any appearance is okay) + flower (a good teacher; nurturing nature)
Hopekit -> hope (any appearance is okay, it is a meaningful word with many reasons; maybe they were born sickly and the parent gave them the name so that they become strong adult) + kit (a rank suffix; it is baby)
Sunflowertuft -> sunflower (ginger/golden fur) + tuft (has some cool tufts of fur here and there lol)
If you look up “warrior cats prefix (or suffix)”, many people have made lists with possible meanings. Have fun!

comparisons between the original and newly edited intros to my owl house daemon au. below cut for length
original
Luz turns her phone over in her hands, sitting at the edge of her bed. “You’re going to have to start eventually,” Maritza says. Luz’s daemon is watching her from where she’s perched on Luz’s knee in her familiar saw-scaled curlytail lizard form, with her yellow and gray banded tail curled loose over her back. It’s a form Luz has known ever since they Settled just before they ever entered the Demon Realm, and Maritza’s claws press lightly against her skin. “I will,” Luz says, and makes no moves to turn her phone on. “Coward.” Maritza skitters onto their bedsheets. “You were the one who made the choice,” Luz says, quietly, but she grabs her phone before Maritza can reach it, turning it on and opening up her texts. Takes a deep breath, steels herself—Mari climbs up to perch on her shoulder—and starts a new video. “Hola, Mami,” Luz says, and…
new
Luz turns her phone over in her hands, sitting at the edge of her bed. “You’re going to have to start eventually,” Maritza says. Luz’s daemon is watching her from where she’s got her head resting on Luz’s knee, a pug with her dark ears pinned back against her skull and her dark eyes fixed on Luz’s face. It’s a form Luz has known ever since they Settled just before entering the Demon Realm, and her daemon’s claws press lightly against her skin. “You’re the one who wants to call, Mari.” Luz traces the edge of a crack fractured through the center of her phone’s screen and makes no move to turn her phone on. “You do it.” Mari’s lip curls as she presses the tips of her claws to their phone, a shick-click. The phone doesn’t respond. “You’re the human.” “Coward,” Luz says, quietly. Mari growls low. “You were the one who made the choice.” Mari jerks her face up and off of Luz, and her skin prickles with the distance. But Luz picks up her phone before Mari can growl again, turning it on and opening up her texts. Takes a deep breath, steels herself—Mari sits, stiff, at her side—and starts a new video. Hola, Mami, Luz tries to say, but can’t get the words to come, not with Mari’s fur scratchy against her side, where it pushes through the fabric of her hoodie. So instead it is Mari who says it, “hola, Mami,” stepping up with her forepaws on Luz’s knee to better fit in frame, her little head poking in.
obviously this 'new' intro isnt fully set in stone and is also subject to change based on how i adapt s1 into its oneshot, but!!! i think the new one does a WAY better job of establishing a few important things, particularly with luz being the one to both say 'coward' and 'you made the choice.' i've said it before and i'll say it again but the way i wrote luz and mari in like, 1-4 is drastically different from where i went with them in 5 and beyond, which means these initial fics need a LOT of leg work the latter ones don't, at least when it comes to characterization.
another much-needed addition is mari's line of 'you're the human,' as the roles played by both daemons and humans is a real big thing i'm exploring with this au, and i previously didnt set that up so well. i'm aiming to start centering this in a reader's mind throughout the first arc!
also, a very obvious change: mari's settled form! while this is not the last time you'll see the saw-scaled curlytail (i do ADORE this little lizard), the more i thought about it the less sense luzmari settling as a lizard made, especially in regards to the circumstances of Why they settled and the way settled forms are treated in the human world. thus, a pug! i wonder if anybody can pick up on why?
anyways. ive got a LOT of work to do, up top, which is what's been intimidating about editing, lol. but i'm excited to get back into it and i think i can make some steady progress.
