Another I think is well done about Jimmy is that it's clear that somewhere deep down this awful bastard has a conscious well at least that how I interpret the whole take responsibility thing.

But I feel like he's a person who is terrified of being responsible and maybe he used to run away from the problems he causes. He's always had the capacity for violence but now he can't run away because he's on the ship.

Running away would be easier and people like Jimmy are definitely prone to taking the easy way out.

To be fair I wouldn't call what Jimmy did on the ship the easiest way to avoid responsibility but it does make me feel like he's never been in a situation where he can't just run away.
