Hello hello! I know you're still working on various asks from me and I appreciate you so much my dude

However I am here to see if any of the butterfly bitties would like to come home with me? It occurred to me that since I have a garden for my bee buddies then maybe butterflies would enjoy it too!

Today we have two hives!!! You don’t have to take both but its recommended to keep the hives together, though the separate hives don’t have to be together!

Pipevine(Undertale Sans Butter Bitty): Harleian is the queen of a very chill hive, shes like most normal pipevines but slightly bigger than your average mini, though that hasn’t stopped her from lounging in flowers or spreading pollen or collecting nectar!

Pipevine(Undertale Sans Butter Bitty): Becker is an offcolor black and green Pipevine with the green being almost neon stripes along his back and legs, hes extra lazy and usually is sunbathing or napping in a flower when he's not lounging about chatting to another bitty,

Metalmark(Underfell Sans butter bitty): Jamie is a calico morph Metalmark and is white with black and orange-y red spots, they're genderfluid and don’t care about pronouns, they never bothered her anyway, nor did other bitties, though he does have a sassy streak!

Hairstreak(underswap sans butter bitty): Luka is a water loving bitty! Though they have to be careful about their wings near water they don’t mind not being able to fly for awhile if it means they can splash around!

Hairstreak(underswap sans butter bitty): Tucker has the star morph and has a star on his chest and one on his face as well in a bright yellow color! He's energetic like any Hairstreak and loves hanging out with his hivemates! Though he's also been known to twist flowers and weeds into obstacle courses

Emperor(Swapfell sans butter bitty): Piper has Polycoria and has two eyelights in both eyes, though this makes her vision a little blurry and her depth perception is a little off, though other than that shes proud of her morph and is just as sassy as ever!

Tiger Mimic(Tale Paps butter bitty): Luna is an offcolor bitty and is black with dark purpley-blue spots on her back and thighs, shes chipper and caring and is also a lesbian, and is dating Tina currently,

Tiger Mimic(Tale Paps butter bitty):  Oscar is an ex-fighting ring bitty and is missing his left arm and his right eye socket is damaged to the point his eyelight is gone, making him blind in that eye,

Tiger Mimic(Tale Paps butter bitty): Rina is also an ex fighting bitty from the same place Oscar was, she has the long tail morph but she lost most of her tail in the ring as well as two of her fingers on her right hand, only leaving her thumb left,

Comma(Fell paps butter bitty): Dusk is an offcolor purpley orange bitty with the fanged type b morph! They're enby and go by they/them pronouns,

Oranphur(Swap paps butter bitty): Jackie is your average Oranphur bitty and acts as such, lazy, laid back, and always up for a joke!

Oranphur(Swap paps butter bitty): Nina has the Antler type A morph and has large antlers for her size, making her a little slower when flying and a bit off balance as well,

Oranphur(Swap paps butter bitty): Ethal has the spikeback morph and so cant lay on his back, he's transmasc and actually named himself after his previous owner, who sadly passed away from a heart attack and her partner brought Ethal back because he couldn’t handle a bitty and the grief and was moving away,

Colorstreak(Swapfell paps butter bitty): Tina is dating Luna and has the long tail morph, shes a deep purple and plum color and her bones are a pitch black color!

Chiri(Undertale gaster butter bitty): Rune has the dull eyed morph and has no eyelights, though they arent blind, they also have the sunlight morph and glows an eerie white, making them look ethereal, they're enby, or as they say 'gender has no baring on them'

Daggerwing(Underfell gaster butter bitty): Abel has the firework morph and has a rainbow of explosion like patterns all over him! He's grumpy and used to be in a hoarding situation thanks to his rare morph and coloring,

Mexwing(Underswap gaster butter bitty: Polly has the scaley morph and is smaller than your average mini, though this doesn’t stop her from having fun! Usually hanging out with Tucker, who she has a crush on, though she hasn’t said anything because she isnt sure if Tucker would like her back,

Doxo(Swapfell Gaster butter bitty: Sal has the horned type a, feathery, and long tail morphs, making them an odd looking bitty with little devil horns and tail and a feathered body instead of fur, they look like a little purple demon bitty more than a butter bitty, but that doesn’t change the fact they're a total sweetheart and grew up with Tiger Mimic bitties instead of other Doxo! Making him act a bit more like Tiger mimics than your average Doxo

And as for the second hive, we have some unique ones here today! Though it’s a smaller hive, (aka: creepypasta butter bitties for you!)

Slenderman Butter bitty: He is the king of the hive, which is a little odd since usually it’s a queen but that doesn’t stop Slenderman from being the boss of this hive! He goes by he/him pronouns and is overprotective of his hive, often setting up traps just outside his territory to protect them(and to keep them inside the territory as well-)

Jeff the killer butter bitty: Jeff is erratic and to put it plainly, insane(and has schizophrenia), he doesn’t see the world like we do, everything is like he walked into wonderland if wonderland was overgrown for some reason, he's been seen often rubbing around on concrete thinking its moss or something soft when he's off his meds, Masky is usually the one to keep him on said medications,

Ben drowned butter bitty: This little bitty LOVES playing games, or watching others play games, Markipliar is one of his fav youtubers and he could watch them for hours(especially when hes playing with friends), though if you ever find a way for him to game himself he'd love that too! He's often stolen phones to mess with and play games on them at the center(making him a bit of a menace)

Masky butter bitty: He's like the big brother of the group, taking care of Sally and Lazari and making sure Toby doesn’t get hurt and Jeff takes his meds, with the help of his mate Hoodie,

Hoodie butter bitty: Hoodie is mated with Masky and helps him make sure everything is running smoothly, though hes on the lazier side and wants to just cuddle up with his mate in a soft bed of petals, that he of course makes sure is as soft as possible every day before bed,

Sally butter bitty: She is by far the youngest here today! Shes a total sweetheart but has been through some abuse previously before dropped off to the rescue center, but that hasn’t stopped her from making friends! Slenderman is extra protective over her though-

Lazari butter bitty: Lazari is the second, still being a pre-teen(which we usually never adopt out but we trust you with the kiddos!), when too hungry she has a habit of trying to eat anything and everything, even other bitties, but the others keep her fed properly so this never really happens anymore!

Ticci Toby butter bitty: He, like all Ticci Toby bitties, cannot feel pain, heat, or cold, making him easily injured and often watched by other bitties, especially Masky, who he sees as an older brother!

Jane the killer butter bitty: She has gotten used to Jeff and somewhat pitties him, since shes older and he's not mentally sane and usually doesn’t hurt anyone unless hes unmedicated, shes a lesbian though she isnt interested in anyone rn(granted the only other girls are kids so you know that puts a damper on relationships lol)

Eyeless Jack butter bitty: He's the medic of the hive, he has surgical knowledge and isnt afraid to use it when needed if a bitty gets hurt(Toby), he's gay and demiromantic as well,

Laughing Jack butter bitty: he's one of the oldest bitties say for Slenderman, he loves games and is usually the one watching the younger bitties, when he's not planning things for the kiddos to do he's usually making food to share or making crafts by himself(have you ever seen a butter bitty sew? You will with him!)

Would you like being forced into a relationship?

When working on relation games, there are many things to take into consideration. I’ve already elaborated a little upon the fact that the choice of characters in relation games is very important, and will affect the players a lot.

When working on those kinds of games I have asked myself questions, such as if players should get a wide variety of romanceable characters to choose from, and be able to shift the relationships according to their preferences, or if it sometimes makes sense to exhort players into having relationships they wouldn’t choose for themselves, to convey a specific story.

Through our experiences working on Knife Sisters, I’ve understood that, even though it’s absolutely doable to coerce players into things, it comes with a cost, and that’s what this post will be about (there will be some spoilers so read with caution).

The relationship between Leo and Dagger

We discovered that players can heavily object to being forced into relationships they haven’t chosen for themselves, if they do not enjoy these relationships. As I wrote in the last post, the storyline with Dagger is the main story in Knife Sisters. So what happens if you don’t like Dagger, and don’t like being subjected to her? It turns out that most of the ‘not recommended’ reviews on Steam mention not being able to opt out of the storyline and relationship with Dagger as something that negatively impacts the game.

When I come across a bad review I generally react emotionally, I often avoid it by for instance skim-reading, and sometimes dismissing the information as not relevant (that’s a coping mechanism – it is really hard to handle when someone truly hates something you’ve tried to be careful about and have put so much effort into). But in this case something got me interested in what the players who objected strongly were actually experiencing – so I decided to take a little more note than I might otherwise do.

So this is from a really lengthy review by someone who disliked Knife Sisters immensely  – both because of how the game was designed, and how the characters were written and/or portrayed.

First and foremost, all dating sims have one thing in common: making you feel like you have a choice. This generally makes or breaks a dating sim, and in this case, it breaks it. This game makes you feel like the relationships you pick, are the ones you decided on. This is not the case at all. I will tell you the obvious now: Dagger is your girlfriend. These other characters? We don’t know them.

The reviewer then discusses their emotions around having to always come back to Dagger, no matter how they feel about her:

Anyway, in all seriousness, I hate Dagger. I didn’t want to be with her at all, yet the story doesn’t progress until she is acknowledged. /…/ after a while, it just gets redundant. Suddenly, I’m not playing the game anymore, the game is playing me.

A game about power and dependency

This player seems to have been hoping for a queer dating sim where player choice regarding all the relationships’ outcome (including the relationship with Dagger) would be much greater than what it was. Since Knife Sisters is about dependency and power relations (something that is clearly stated in the description and also in the beginning of the game), there definitely is coercion – meaning that the player/Leo can’t fully get away from Dagger. Being caught in Dagger’s net is what the game’s theme is about – and if that’s not something you as a player would want to explore, and you can’t stand it, then the game will be experienced as almost abusive to you, which is what this player is expressing. They are also saying that there are some expectations on the genre dating sim, that Knife Sisters just doesn’t live up to.

The game and its player

To counter, some reviewers thought very differently about the game. In her Kotaku article, Kate Gray goes into the topic of the player’s relationship to the main character – and that their wants and needs actually could differ to some extent. In the beginning of the article, she poses this question:

Can a character be their own person? It’s intriguing, the idea that the player and player-character could be two separate identities, with two separate senses of agency and decision-making. Often, they are one and the same: The player tells the player-character to do something, or say something, and they will. But in many narrative games, sometimes the player-character has a personality already, and they know what they do and don’t like.

What Gray addresses here is something I’ve thought of a lot, and have made a deliberate choice about. I want the main character to be a person that has their own agenda. Within the framework of their agenda, the player can make choices. And the relationship with Dagger is, in a way, a reflection of that design decision. No matter if the player likes Dagger, Leo is intrigued by her, and has a hard time resisting her. In that respect, Knife Sisters probably does break dating sim norms.

Gray continues:

Leo decides how they feel about the world, but you, the player, decide how they interact with it. Yes, Leo is scared, that much is clear; but whether or not they do something despite their fear is up to you.

This way of playing actually demands of the player to accept the main character’s personality and circumstances – which might be too much to ask of every single player, since they will sometimes want more agency than what the game can offer.

UnderFell Monster Kid Shade

Name: Scorch

Features: Sharp-edged and restless, their form seems more defined than most Shades- jagged like torn cloth and constantly shifting at the edges like smoke caught in a windstorm. Their eyes blaze crimson in the dark, pulsing brighter when emotions spike. Their tail flickers like a living flame, and when agitated, their shadow can ripple violently across surfaces. they tend to leave behind faint singe marks in shadows they pass through- smudged scorch trails like a fire just barely put out.

Size: 5 - 7 inches tall(mini), 1'2 - 1'8 feet tall(fullsize)

Personality: Bold, defensive, fiercely loyal once trust is earned

Likes: Shadow sparring, edgy catchphrases, collecting sharp shiny objects, being treated like a “cool sidekick,” dramatic stories with tragic anti-heroes, being praised for bravery, finding a warm lap to curl up in (but only when no one’s watching)

Dislikes: Being ignored, baby talk, being called “cute,” soft music, being told they can’t do something, anything that feels condescending or overly sweet, being pitied

Compatibility: They bond deeply with protective or strong-willed bitties who can match their energy but won’t mock their feelings—think Oranphur, Daggerwing, or someone like Ember.

Caretakers who respect boundaries and let Scorch come to them are ideal. They get defensive if comfort is forced on them.

they are surprisingly good with smaller or timid bitties, often becoming a loud, overly enthusiastic protector, especially if they can take on the “older sibling” role.

However, they may clash with overly nurturing or soft-voiced bitties who treat them too gently or talk down to them, even unintentionally.

Feeding habits: Shades can only eat magic food, Scorchs especially thrives on magic flavored with adrenaline, pride, and recognition. They’ll eat more when they feel like they’ve accomplished something or been noticed for their efforts.

Additional info: Shades bitties can’t control their magic very well and it acts different based on their mood

Shades bitties can float and walk thru things but when they want they can make a more physical form but they are always cold to the touch

Shades bitties can hide themselves from view when they want,

Shades are like shadows, they can travel through shadows and pop back out the other side through another shadow! it makes traveling a breeze!

Shades bitties have to have special clothes so they don’t have to focus on staying solid, and so they can freely walk through things without said clothes falling off

Zone: Inside, Ruins,

In Universe: they are whispered about by Ruins dwellers as “the flame that never caught”—a spark of a story that should’ve burned brighter but got smothered too soon. They haunt battlefields and training spots, challenging unseen foes. If you meet them, they’ll probably try to impress you. But if you treat them with genuine respect, they’ll never leave your side.

And I did like these a lot! The Hawk moth, maybe most fitting for Lace since their wings look like his nicknamesake 💖 vvv

Last thoughts on it for now but I also like the idea of Stretch maybe being ruddy daggerwing styled <3 vvv

Back when I'd been pondering on my own fae/fairytale au most monsters had more like, fictionally based wings tied to their appearance, like Levi had fin wings that were similar to her head fins and like, a little like sailfish fins? That's why in the initial sketch of Edge he has bone/dragon style wings, and Red would've presumably had similar (but probably one being significantly damaged, as is my usual modus operandi whenever giving him extra features, which can most prominently be seen in his mer-version's significant tail damage)

But! I really like the more classic spin with the more insect based wings!! I love looking at butterflies and moths <333
