he jumped then, halfway into popping a pastry into his mouth while holding onto two more with his other hand. “don’t –,” he chewed quickly, and swallowed, trying not to choke. “i - uhhhhhh – yes.” he stammered, hiding one hand behind his back. he would have tried not to turn so red in the face if he wasn’t already. hurriedly, he wiped at the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, and faced the lady again, bowing quickly as if he only just realised that she, too, was a member of high society. “yes, i would be of ill judgement not to attend such an event.” even that didn’t sound convincing, so he sighs instead – “i do not want any scandal, my lady – i was merely trying the food – it’s absolutely scrumptious! have you tried any?”

As he escaped excused himself from a boring discussion between his father and another official, Hyunsoo hoped to have some time for himself instead of dealing with pleasantries and small talk.  Once he had enough time to recover, he would be just fine since he was used to this kind of thing thanks to his work but for now, he nursed a drink as he looked around the room.

His eyes halted on a girl that looked familiar but at the same time she was too young for her to be the woman he was reminded of.  Did he stare at her for longer than he thought he had?  That was the only explanation for the words that Lady Moon uttered and looking at her, he furrowed his eyebrows.  “I beg your pardon, Lady Moon, but I am not sure what you mean.” He replied while his expression remained the same as the one that appeared when he heard her words: one of confusion.

Whether she meant that he should hurt the girl that he didn’t have any ill will against by making her fall in love or encouraging him to cheat on his wife, he wasn’t sure and he didn’t know why she would say something like that to him especially here where anyone could hear.  Then again, maybe he was being a little paranoid but he didn’t need another reason to look over his shoulder.

the lights were dimmed at the dining area, lanterns hanging around the corners of the courtyard not nearly enough considering the amount of casted shadows from socializing crowds and raised bowls of wine. hui slipped quietly from his seat the moment he finished his meal - sweet cakes on top, the desert to end it all - as the adults swarmed from table to table, pouring more wine amid rouse of cheers. the talk often turned political in undertones, words enuciated with suggestions that he was too young to understand besides flashing his best smile whenever eye contact was made.

and as his brother left the seat, he too, bid his greetings and disappear. his family would stay till late, he supposed, before he would be summoned to return as well; his father was a busy man, and his mother, always in her spot, dragging her patience to new heights.

for now, it’s escape. but the lanterns hung fewer the further he moved away from the feasting and clinked porcelain. back home, his study was always brightly lit, ample light to allow comfort of reading through the night. here, it reminded him of the entertainment district, low, subdued, hues of warmth. such words, of course, he kept to himself. how could something so prestigious as the royal be grouped with such low of the low? he chided himself for even making the comparison, making an extra note to never think of it again. the male slowed his steps with a light furrow of his brows, and as he heard a voice, he spun around.

Soo-ah wasn’t expecting such words to come from Lady Jiwoo, truth her smile wasn’t the real one, the one only her family and a few selected people had the pleasure to see but no one had ever discovered this one was the forced one she used as a shield during public appearances or when she had to attend to a place she didn’t wish to be. Her eyes widened for a second before returning to their natural size and a gentle smile replaced the other one, hoping this would be enough to fool the rest of the people. “I guess I’m a little tired, my Lady” Soo-ah spoke in a confident manner, the palace was not the place to say she would rather be somewhere else. “Nothing to worry about”

he inhales smoke from his pipe, but this one’s unlike thelast — dragged slowly in a lengthened period; the smoke he blows out is draggedout as well. he laughs — no chuckles is more like it — to show that the news(could something as common as this be considered news?) does not affect him.

he’s used to the ‘poison’ people spread about him behindhis back, and it’s all good and fine as long as it isn’t directed at his wife.

besides — he takes another drag. — he likes the feeling ofpoison running through his veins.

“was itsomething about how i do not deserve princess seona because i am a fool?” hetaps off the excess ash that collected in his pipe; stares at them as theysizzle, exposed to the cold december air.

“you should know better than most, i positively am not lost.” seora’s words are laced with a certain playfulness as she turns attention to the other female. perhaps it wasn’t in seora’s best interest to be eavesdropping on the nearby scholars. however the talk of new poetry coming from china most definitely caught her attention. it was just a matter of getting her hands on said scrolls. and that of course would be easier said than done. 

“and what about you, darling?” the words are drenched in honey, teasing the other female as seora allows her attention from the group of scholars to be severed completely. “you seem to be the lost one here.”
