The Fool Who Fell in Love with You (Modern-day Dilliam)

It’s date night, but Damien’s in a bad mood. Can William save the night, or is something worse about to happen?

It was Friday, which meant it was date night. William was the host this time and he had everything prepared! A homemade pizza and sides were ready to put in the oven; he had splashed out and bought fancy red wine to go with it. But after dinner? He had a choice of Damien’s top three cheesy romance movies for the Mayor, and the warmest blanket he owned draped over the couch that they could cocoon together in. He had even bought new pyjamas for Damien in case he was too tired to drive or drank too much and wanted to stay over. He was covered for all problems! It would be perfect!!

Unfortunately, Damien was in a terrible mood when he arrived. Dinner, William decided, would be delayed until he knew his boyfriend was feeling better. It was time to implement his four-pronged plan - “Operation: Cheer up Damien”!

Step 1 - Allow Damien to talk about whatever’s on his mind. Step 2 - Help talk Damien through the problem and find a solution. Step 3 - Remind Damien of how much he is loved and valued. Step 4 - Give lots of supportive hugs and smooches!

Step 1 had mixed results. Damien’s problems stemmed to work. William had some knowledge about the incident due to a news article in the local paper, but it was much deeper than that. Since the matter was confidential and couldn’t be fully discussed, Step 2 had to be abandoned. Step 3 only served to frustrate Damien because it wasn’t ‘relevant to anything at all’. Before Step 4 could begin, Damien rose out of his chair.

“I’m sorry. I should have cancelled tonight.” His eyes dropped to the cane in his hands. “If I stay, we’re only end up having an argument and... I don’t want to fight against you too.”  With a sigh, Damien turned and began making his way to the front door. William couldn’t believe it. His perfect night, over before it began.

“W-Wait!” He called out. “You... You can’t leave! I have a surprise for you!” He didn’t, but he’d think of something. Thankfully, it caught Damien by surprise, hand hovering over his coat. It dropped to his side as he turned to face William.

“A... Surprise?”

“Yes! Once that cannot wait! It must be given today!” That didn’t sound desperate, did it? Damien didn’t seem to think so, judging by the expression on his face. Then again, William couldn’t quite tell if Damien was curious or irritated.

“So it’s a gift, then?”

“Yes? Of sorts?” Of what sort though? Think William, think!!

“Please tell me you didn’t buy a dog.” Damien looked as though he would immediately leave if this was the case. Thankfully, William’s frantic ‘no’ gestures told him otherwise. “William, stop beating around the bush. What is it?”

“A surprise! I’m not going to tell you if you leave!” Damien had to count to five and take a deep breath at this evasive behaviour. “I mean... It means a lot to me, and I’d rather you be able to appreciate it.” By now, an idea was forming in William’s mind. A stupid idea, but he was utterly desperate. He was looking forward to this all week, and he knew Damien was too. He had to fight for this.

“Alright. Fine. I’ll stay.” That was all Damien needed to say before William perked up. He dashed over and grabbed his boyfriend’s hands. The cane was left aside as William led the Mayor back into the sitting room and to the couch. Once Damien was settled, the Colonel set to work. He pushed the coffee table back and grabbed the comb sitting on it. William was a performer on stage, Damien his only audience.

Step 5 - Sing a cheesy love song

“Wise men say, Only fools rush in. But I can’t help Falling in love with you...”

There’s a brief pause as a horrifying thought sinks in - he doesn’t know the rest of the words. He knew repeating the first verse over and over wouldn’t do any good. The singing had the positive effect of getting the frown off Damien’s face, and there was no way he was going to lose that momentum! Throwing caution to the wind, he began to sing whatever came to mind.

“I’ve been the fool, I always have been, Making jokes and pulling pranks. But when I’d get in trouble, I’d turn and see you smile And boy... I was the fool who fell in love with you.

You had warmth in your heart; Stars in your eyes; The whole world at your feet. You could have anyone at all And yet... Your heart went to the fool.

I count my blessings you love me. I thank the stars you care. ‘Cause you’re handsome, kind, smart, charming, funny, a really good cook, very good at reading things - *ahem* I mean Perfect in every way. I may just be a soldier but my love is loyal to you. I’m a fool, but I’m smart enough to know My heart belongs to you.”

When the ‘song’ finished, William finally dared to look at Damien. His boyfriend had stars in his eyes and a proper smile on his lips. Damien rose to his feet and pulled William into a warm hug, planting soft kisses on his cheek.

“Oh Will...” He laughed, before kissing him on the lips. When they pulled apart, William’s cheeks were burning, but a goofy grin poked out under his moustache. Damien was giving him that look of adoration that made his heart flutter. 

“I love you, Dames.”

“I love you too, Will. I’m sorry for earlier.”

“It’s alright. We have tonight.” William pressed a gentle kiss to Damien’s nose. The pair stayed in silence for a moment, appreciating the presence of the other.

“You made that up on the spot to stop me from leaving, didn’t you?” Damien quizzed playfully.

“Was it that obvious?” was the only reply given before being swallowed up with laughter from both men.

@briingmayflowers is a familiar url around all my blogs. As long as I’ve been in the indie RP community, Amy has always been there. I’m not joking. When I set up my Jack blog back in 2013, her Oogie was one of the first ten blogs to follow me. And if you’ve ever had that moment where you’re basically faced with a legend in the field, that was me. Except, like, I was utterly CLUELESS at the time. I had been in the safety of a private rp group, but some of them had their muses on indie blogs and they had been telling me about this, literal legend. And then to discover she followed me first? And then to discover our writing styles matched up really well?? And THEN to realise we actually got along OOC????

Man, I was utterly blown away. I literally pinched myself at one point in the early days.

We had one job. Just one job. Encourage the rivalry/hatred between Jack and Oogie. And we failed. Miserably. An absolute disaster. You couldn’t have done worse if you tried. They’re now BFFs who are almost like brothers after a LOT of trial and error.

And really? Amy is one of my closest friends too. I don’t think I say that enough.

Because she is. 

When days were good and bad, she was always there for me, and I tried my best to be there for her. Any new muse I’ve taken on she’s jumped at the chance to do stuff with (and after all this time we finally have a ship xD). We used to throw replies back and forth at each other when we were both stuck in college, or attempt to talk about normal things and have muses join in the chat.

I’ve watched her develop worlds from simple dust. Settings and escapades come to life with practical ease. Her muses are all so well thought of and perfectly rounded. There’s a reason to love every single one she’s written. Everything she does is fuelled with passion and love for it. Not only that, she’s had infinite patience with the scatterbrained Karp who might forget to reply to a super important role reversal au for several weeks (among other things), or hop from one thing to another without any warning. I have no idea how she keeps track of me.

And this isn’t even mentioning her herself. Amy is literally the most precious cinnamon roll I have ever met. Bar one poopy thing, there’s never been any drama, any conflict, and as far as I’m aware we’ve never argued over anything. She’s, like, the most unproblematic person you’ll ever meet. She’s like Damien in that way - she wants the best for everyone. Even when work is literally beating her over the head with a plank of wood, she’s still smiling, still trying to do good. It’s really inspiring.

I’ve been super lucky to have been able to meet her twice in person over the last twelve months. She’s someone I know I can talk to if I’m feeling down, and that’s something that has gone both ways. We’ve stuck with each other through thick and thin, and I really don’t think that’s going to change any time soon.

It’s funny. I’ve written all this, and part of me still doesn’t feel like it’s enough to express how much Amy means to me, and how much love she really deserves. Her OC May is a precious little witch who wants to make new friends (especially if they’re magic users!!!). If a muse of yours needs a literal ray of sunshine in your life, May’s your girl. 

So to wrap up. I love Amy with all my heart. She’s one of my dearest friends on this site and I would literally die for her. I still don’t say that enough tbh.

Florida Insider Poll finds doubt Democrats will nominate strongest candidate

The verdict is clear among Florida’s political elites as to who would be the strongest gubernatorial nominees for the general election: Democrat Gwen Graham and Republican Adam Putnam.

But among more than 200 Florida political experts participating in the latest Florida Insider poll, the verdict is much less clear about whom the Democrats are likely to nominate.

Nearly six in 10 of the campaign professionals, money-raisers, lobbyists, activists, and political scientists surveyed said former U.S. Rep. Graham of Tallahassee would be the strongest general election candidate for the Democrats.

Putnam is heavily favored to win not just the Republican primary but the general election as well.

Only  42 percent expect Graham to win the primary pitting her against four other men. Most, 51 percent, predict the nominee will be Miami beach businessman Philip Levine, who has spent about $10 million of his own money on TV ads airing for months that have launched him into first place in early polls.

“Levine in many ways is perceived as the front runner and rightfully so. He has been spending money wisely on tv but also has quietly built a strong and robust field presence- especially in Tampa and south Florida. Many democrats would make their peace with him mainly because he has he money to self finance his run, allowing money to be spread around to save Nelson, put the state senate in a posture to be flipped to the Dems and flip a Congressional seat or 3,” said a Republican.

Less than 6 percent of those surveyed predicted any of the other credible Democrats running — Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, Greene, or Winter Park businessman Chris King –would win the nomination.

On the Republican side, an overwhelming 87 percent said Agriculture Commissioner  Putnam would be the strongest Republican for the general election (and 72 percent (77 percent of Republicans) predicted he would beat U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis in the primary.

Putnam, as part of the GOP establishment in Florida, has far more ties to and friends among the Florida Insiders than DeSantis.

“Putnam will survive the recent problems in his campaign. He has a strong grass roots campaign. You can’t win just being on Fox News,” said one Republican, noting DeSantis’ campaign strategy of relying mainly on Fox News appearances to reach Florida primary voters.

Another Republican: “Adam Putnam holds an almost insurmountable fundraising lead over Ron DeSantis, as well as a huge head start. Putnam will be the Republican nominee because he campaigns, connects with ordinary Floridians on issues Floridians care about, and knows how to win in Florida. DeSantis’ campaign is showing almost no signs of life.

Florida Insider polls are unscientific surveys of people closely involved in the political process – including people working for or actively helping the candidates in question. We allow anonymous comments to encourage frank assessments and answers.

The polls reflect the conventional wisdom of Florida’s political establishment, rather than actual public opinion or reality.

Asked which of the seven major candidates they expected to be Florida’s next governor. Putnam was favored by an overwhelming  47 percent, followed by Graham with 23 percent, Levine with 17 percent, and DeSantis with 7 percent.

“Gwen Graham is the strongest Democrat in a Statewide election,” said a Democrat. :Adam Putnam is the strongest Republican. Graham beats DeSantis, Putnam beats anybody but Graham, Putnam v Graham is close, with a slight edge to Putnam without any headwinds. I can’t predict what the political mood about Trump will be in October.”

Among Republicans, 12 percent foresaw a Gov. Levine and 5 percent a Gov, Graham. Among Democrats 23 percent predicted Putnam will win the general election and 1 percent said DeSantis.

And the Trump factor?

A slight  majority, 51 percent, said Trump’s standing with voters will hurt Republicans up and down the ballot “a little,” 17 percent said “not at all,” 16 percent said Trump will hurt other Republicans “a great deal,” and another 16 percent said Trump in the White House will help Republicans on the ballot. Put another way, 16 percent think Trump is helpful to Republican candidates this year, and 68 percent think he will hurt them at least somewhat.

The 218 politicos participating in this month’s Florida Insider poll included 112 Republicans, 89 Democrats, and 17 women and men registered to neither major party. They were:

The First Interview

Okay, bear with me here. I had a series of random thoughts today, which ultimately led to a new crackship:

Mayor Damien/Cameraman Jim.

Under the read-more is their first meeting. Hope you enjoy!

If you want to become Mayor, you have to realise that your days will be busy. Essentially, your life will have to be put on hold if you want to do a job that will make the city proud of you. It was something Damien Truman had accepted before he ever began campaigning for Mayor. During the election, every aspect of Damien’s life was checked, any chance to find a weak spot in the young politician’s story; find a reason to squash him before he could do anything. They had even resorted to hounding his friends (who thankfully had taken it in their stride). Mark could casually redirect the focus of the interview back to him and his work instead of the election. William had been pounced upon a few times by reporters, but had kept quiet about Damien. His university friend was even asked to spill details about Damien’s university antics, but they said nothing. Meanwhile, the mayoral candidate could hold his own in interviews rather well. Curveballs were dealt with, while opinions and claims were countered as easily as he could discuss the weather. Despite this, it seemed like all reporters were out to get him.

That is, until one fateful day.

There was a knock on the door of the office that Damien had rented as ‘base’ for the election. Damien, assuming it was one of his team mates arriving back early, opened the door, only to be thrown by what was in front of him. Two virtually identical young men stood before him, with matching messy hair and sky-blue shirts. The only real difference between them was that one held a microphone, and the other held a camera.

“Hello, Mr Trujim,” the young man with the microphone piped up before Damien could open his mouth. “I am Jim, this is my brother Jim, and we would like an interview for Jim News.” Confused, Damien blinked a few times, taking the rather bizarre situation in. Jim News had come up in conversation. Apparently, it was known to be a rather eccentric news station, run by a small family with the same name and unusual methods of reporting. Despite that, they had a loyal fanbase. With a smile, Damien stepped back and gestured for them to enter. They didn’t seem to be out for gossip.

“Of course, come on in. I actually have a free half-hour before...” Damien trailed off, watching with a worried expression as Field Reporter Jim literally scrambled in, his brother chasing after him.

“I report to you live from the office of the man who may very well be our next mayor one day,” Jim began, crab-walking toward some posters. “There appear many of this man here. Mayhaps they are the secret, Jim.” The microphone was prodded against one of the posters, and Damien was trying his best not to snicker at their antics. They were living up to their reputation so far. Suddenly, the pair were one the move again, this time to the window. “Everything here is spick-and-span. Our cousin, Tidy Jim, would be proud. And look, a pupper.” Cameraman Jim dashed over, zooming in dramatically at the dog that had caught their attention outside. “Is this pupper going to vote? I hope its hooman remembers to register it. But alas, it walks away with no interest! What say you?”

Damien had to restrain the urge to jump as the pair were now standing in front of him. Or rather, they were crouched in front of him, camera twisted up at a strange angle to try and get him in the shot. Field Reporter Jim had the microphone raised as high as he could, while Cameraman Jim peeked around his camera with hopeful eyes. Despite the light-hearted tone, there was a hint of nerves. 

“What say I?” Damien repeated, earning a nod from the brothers. “About what, exactly?”

“About puppers such as that one not voting for you.”

“Well...” Damien, while caught off guard, thought it best not to burst their bubble. “I do want to put work into our main park and make it pretty for them to visit and play in.” Slowly, he knelt down to the height of the crouched Jims. This appeared to be the right choice, since both had a wide grins. “A-and... I would like our streets to be safe for their walks.”

“And is it true, Mr Trujim, that you want to be Mayor?” Damien pulled back slightly as the microphone poked his cheek. For a second, he was convinced the question was a joke, but the serious expressions told otherwise.

“I... Of course I do. If the people want me as their Mayor, I would be delighted to serve them and set a good example for-”

“How honest! Truly, there is no truer Jim than Trujim. Back to you, Jim.” Suddenly, Field Reporter Jim fainted, and Cameraman Jim placed the camera in between his brother’s legs. Damien quickly climbed to his feet, dashed across the office, and poured a glass of water in the staff room.

“Is he alright? Do you need me to call an ambulance?” Damien asked as he hurried back. Cameraman Jim, sitting on the floor without the camera, shook his head.

“Jim always faints. Once he has his Jim nap, he’ll be Jim as new.” Compared to his brother, Cameraman Jim was soft-spoken. His body language suggested he was the more timid of the two. Now that Damien was able to look at him properly, he could see that his hair was wavier than his brother’s, on the verge of being curly. Damien decided to sit down as well, offering the water to Jim instead. It was taken with a hint of a smile.

“Thank you for coming to interview me,” Damien spoke up after a few seconds of silence. It seemed to take Jim by surprise, judging by how, but he shook his head.

“No, no. We should be thanking you. The Mayor kicks us out when we try to interview him. A-and no one has ever taken part in our interviews as a Jim would.” That explained the smiles when he knelt down, Damien realised.

“Jim, why don’t you tell me a little about the work you two do? I’m sure it must be busy.”

The pair chatted until the brother woke up. It had only meant to be a way to pass the time, but Damien found himself honestly enjoying it. Cameraman Jim was certainly the calmer of the pair, but he had his own air of oddness mixed with his shyness. It was actually rather endearing.

“Come on Jim. We need to get back to the studio!” Field Reporter Jim urged before scurrying to the office door. His brother followed close behind, although he did glance over his shoulder at Damien.

“Ah, hold on!” Damien called out after a few seconds, jogging after them. They had stopped at the office door, looking at him with curious, brown eyes. “I’d be more than happy to do another interview, should you ever want to.”

“That would be an honour!” The pair chirped. “Thank you Mr Trujim!”

“Please, call me Damien.” He glanced at Cameraman Jim without meaning to. However, Damien could swear Cameraman Jim’s cheeks were rosier than before as he followed his brother outside with a squeak.

The fact that this observation left Damien with a wistful smile on his face made him realise that he may be a touch smitten over a shy cameraman. Maybe it would be wrong to put his life completely on hold after all.
