A rich guy who died 17 years ago is still funding rightwing causes. The only good news is that the money runs out in 2025.
From the Ambien and Dramamine in millions of bathroom medicine cabinets, to the sugar substitute that makes diet sodas sweet, to the first-ever birth control pill, some of Americaâs most common medicines and supplements can be traced back to the G.D. Searle pharmaceutical company. Now, more than a century after the companyâs founding, the massive family fortune built from those scientific advances has emerged as a major benefactor of the right, mostly out of the public eye. The Searle Freedom Trust, a foundation funded by the companyâs former chairman, has doled out more than $200 million in grants over the last decade, sending more money to conservative nonprofits than nearly any other private foundation in recent years, according to a CNN analysis. This year, the Searle trust is poised to play an even bigger role as it empties out its coffers. Following the wishes of its founder, the late Daniel C. Searle, the trust is closing down in 2025 and planning to award most of its last major grants in 2024. That means a potential windfall during a key election year for groups that push conservative policies: as of the beginning of 2023, according to its most recent tax return, the trust had more than $59 million left to spend.
Thanks to the Republican Supreme Court, the filthy rich can shit money into the coffers of rightwing causes and candidates.
âThe fact that our political system works in a way where wealthy people who died years ago can continue to have such profound influence over our politics and our beliefs about science and the world is just incredibly damaging,â said Galen Hall, a University of Michigan researcher whoâs studied the flow of money from foundations like the Searle trust to climate change denial groups. âItâs one of the key aspects of American politics that makes positive change on issues like climate change so difficult.â [ ... ] The Searle trust is one of the most prolific funders of conservative groups among all private foundations, according to a CNN analysis of nonprofit tax data. From 2020 through 2022, it has given a total of more than $29 million to a selection of conservative nonprofits identified by CNN. Only one other private foundation, the Sarah Scaife Foundation, reported giving more to the groups over the same time period, based on data from hundreds of thousands of public tax filings. The analysis only included publicly reported donations, so it may be missing some foundations that donated through donor-advised funds, which help conceal the path of their money.
The billionaires and their poorer multimillionaire buddies know that liberals tend to overlook state governments. So they focus disproportionately on controlling state legislatures and passing reactionary laws. The late Daniel C. Searle was no exception.
The trust has also given more than $2.75 million to the American Legislative Exchange Council, which over the years has written cookie-cutter model legislation that has inspired conservative bills around the US â including laws that expanded the use of private prisons, restricted the ability of state pension funds to consider environmental risks when making investments, and limited local governmentsâ ability to restrict firearms. The Searle trust has âbeen a key financial driver of the development of right-wing political infrastructure,â said Brendan Fischer, the deputy executive director of the progressive watchdog group Documented. âTheyâve had a pretty successful track record in areas including attacks on workersâ rights, the freedom to vote, state efforts to thwart action on climate change.â
We can no longer afford to be slackers when it comes to state politics. Increasingly we need to give extremist Republicans more pushback in state capitals.
Take more interest in legislative matters in your state. Let news outlets know you want more coverage of what legislatures are up to. Support outlets which already do provide such coverage.
And find out who exactly is representing you in the legislature. If it's MAGA Republicans who get loads of campaign contributions from billionaire sugar daddies, work for their defeat in the next state election.
Find Your Legislators Look your legislators up by address or use your current location.
This is a Substack about state politics by the idiosyncratic Carolyn Fiddler. It looks at state politics from a national and Democratic perspective. It's worth subscribing to.
This Week in Statehouse Action
It's good though it isn't a substitute for a news source for your specific state's politics.
Filthy rich rightwingers can be stopped if we get involved and remain focused. Winners in politics are not people with short attention spans.

Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

Nottingham (G) Ch R2: Daniel Evans [2/WC] def. Henry Searle [Q] 7-6(4), 7-6(5) Match Stats
đž BBC iPlayer
Dan's experience might have helped him navigating some intriguing moments, especially as he faced H. Searle's slices and groundstrokes' balance. However, the former's passes helped him to finish some points as this match came down to a few points, most importantly how they executed their final shots. This way, Dan managed to nail both tie-breakers as he outhit H. Searle's forehands at times even if he only converted 1 out of his 6 break points in both sets, while H. Searle tried to optimize his 33% break point conversion rate, but was unable to keep up with the form as Dan struck back in the eighth game of the second set.
Besides, there were several differences in both players' service games. Even though Dan scored 3 more aces than H. Searle, the latter had a slight edge on his first serves by 1% with a 78% winning percentage, which helped him getting out of some problems apart from trying to navigate the flow as he followed it up through some combinations of slices and forehands. However, H. Searle's 4 double faults only made his second serves more vulnerable as he won 25% lesser second serve points than Dan, whose service game consistency helped him to overcome pressure points on his serves.
In the quarterfinals, Dan will face fellow Brit qualifier in Charles Broom, who stunned last week's Surbiton Challenger champion Lloyd Harris 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4 in the second round sometime later that day for the biggest moment of his career. This could be a decent test for Dan's aggression, especially as adding a little bit more pace and depth when the points got extended under pressure as C. Broom could possibly dig deeper in such situations. Should be another Battle of the Ages in the quarterfinals!

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! âïž
Itâs been an interesting week, itâs just felt off for some reason. I think part of it is having our new pup â Cocoa â in the house and part of it is work.
Ever since our layoff things havenât felt the same, because frankly, theyâre not. Our company structure has changed and weâre still adapting and moving thing around. It feels way more corporate than ever but I suppose that happens when you get beyond a couple hundred people. Weâre near one thousand, even after the layoff.
After the project Iâm working on comes to a close at the end of July Iâm hoping to get a little bench time to work on my SwiftUI (worst technology name ever) skills and shake the cobwebs out of the old programmer brain. đ§
Ashur Cabrera
Weâre giving ourselves the weekend to rest, then Phase 2 kicks off Monday when we start working on paperwork and logistics to pack a few bags, our pup, and try our luck at spending the next few years abroad. (More on this later in the summer âșïž)
Ashur is a friend, all around great fella, and very talented web developer. Heâs even contributed his amazing web talent to Stream and Iâm forever grateful for it.
Anywho, Iâm so excited for him and this new adventure. Doing it while youâre young is the right call. Do it while your body can take it. Get out, explore!
I still hope to convince Kim we need to go all in on the RV lifestyle. Still not there yet. Maybe someday.
Enjoy this new adventure Ashur! đ§ł

It is also what backs a number of the Swift concurrency primitives â with a cross platform, open source implementation of CoreFoundation released as the backing implementation. That source code is invaluable in gaining a better understanding of how CFRunLoop works. At just under 5k lines of quite readable C code, one could grok it at a high level in a few hours.
If you know me you know I love browsing C and C++ code. The thing I find extremely interesting about this code is how many OSâes it is targeted to run on; macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Makes me wonder whoâs writing code against those platforms and how the new all Swift based frameworks work on those platforms.
This article takes a deep dive into CFRunLoop and itâs a good read if youâre into C code. đ
NBC News
The Supreme Court issued a divided ruling on a pair of challenges to affirmative action policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, with potential implications across higher education and beyond.
The Republican built court is doing its job dismantling years and years of progress. Theyâve already set Womenâs rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and now affirmative action back. Whatâs next?
Hereâs hoping most institutions of higher education donât change their policies. Just leave that to the rich white racist institutions that take in dumbass rich white kids whose parents buy their way in.
Speaking of dumbass rich white kidsâŠ
Daniel Golden âą ProPublica
My book exposed a grubby secret of American higher education: that the rich buy their under-achieving childrenâs way into elite universities with massive, tax-deductible donations.
Screw Harvard and the entire Ivy League. As a nation we need to get our belief that going to one of those schools magically makes you smarter or better than everyone else. They cater to the rich and powerful who can afford to buy their way in, like Jared Kishnerâs dad did for him. Itâs all about keeping the rich and powerful in power.
Sure, turn away the dark skinned people with great grades and SAT scores and let the idiots in.
Iâm sure there are many other schools doing the same thing and they should all be shamed.
The question is how to stop it?
Doc Searles
For almost the whole time I wrote at the old blog, the URL doc.searls.com took you there as a redirect. Now that URL goes here, directly. Put another way, this was a Harvard blog until yesterday (and again, everything until that day remains so: thatâs its legacy). From now on, itâs mine alone. It has crossed from one state to another. Iâm not sure yet how it will change, if at all. But I feel energized about what new things I might do with it.
Speaking of Harvard, it sounds like theyâve shut down and archived a bunch of blogs and their associated blogging tools. Iâd venture to guess the tools they were using were long in the tooth, not well maintained, and a security risk, but I could be completely wrong about that! đ
Itâs nice to see Doc in his new home. I just need to remember to subscribe to the new site.
Keaton Brandt
Instead, I think itâs safe to say itâs largely Appleâs fault. Or, maybe âfaultâ is the wrong word. Weâve moved on from the era of beautiful Mac software to the era of web-based apps, for better and for worse. Thereâs no one simple reason for this evolution, but itâs interesting to think through some of the factors.
This piece goes to all kinds of interesting places. I think the bottom line is Apple is running Microsoftâs playbook from the late 90âs when the web was taking off and they were desperately trying to keep folks tied into their OS and tools.
Eventually Microsoft got their act together and found their way into web technologies. Heck, they even went as far as scrapping their own home built browser for Chromium, but thatâs another story Iâm very opinionated about.
Jay Barmann âą sfist.com
This is very sad. HRD Coffee Shop (521A Third Street), which has seen two generations of owners in SoMa/South Beach and became so well known for its fusion-style burritos and Mongolian beef cheesesteak a decade ago that they were paid a visit by Guy Fieriâs Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives in 2010, closed for good on Friday, June 23. The restaurant had just celebrated its 70th birthday this year.
This was one of the places on my âneed to eat there somedayâ list and itâs a real shame to see it close down. I really wanted to try their spicy pork and kimchi burrito. Guess that ainât gonna happen now. đ
Pieter Hintjens
Itâs one of my interview questions: âwhat is Good Code?â Surprisingly, almost no-one gets it right. Itâs not about speed, elegance, language, or style. Good Code is code that solves real problems for real people, in an effective way. Let me list the top 10 rules for writing good code.
I enjoy reading how others approach coding. Iâm constantly hearing the term âbest practicesâ and makes me cringe a little.
I donât agree with Pieterâs number zero rule: Use Git and Github. I know git is super popular and I use it and GitHub every day, but itâs not the only version control system on the planet and there are others that work just fine. The advice Iâve always given folks is pick a version control system and use it.
GitHub is, of course, a very good choice. đ
[David Pierce âą The Verge](<https://www.theverge.com/23778253/google-reader-death-2013-rss-social)
To executives, Google Reader may have seemed like a humble feed aggregator built on boring technology. But for users, it was a way of organizing the internet, for making sense of the web, for collecting all the things you care about no matter its location or type, and helping you make the most of it.
I remember how down my brother was when Google shut down Reader. He had a really nice workflow and could navigate Reader with his keyboard. It also had some very unique to Reader features he made good use of. I donât remember what they were but I should ask him. If theyâre unique perhaps Stream could benefit from implementing some? đ€
Jason Kottke
When you write some code and put it on a spacecraft headed into the far reaches of space, you need to it work, no matter what. Mistakes can mean loss of mission or even loss of life. In 2006, Gerard Holzmann of the NASA/JPL Laboratory for Reliable Software wrote a paper called The Power of 10: Rules for Developing Safety-Critical Code. The rules focus on testability, readability, and predictability:
Iâve heard about these rules before and theyâre no bad at all, especially for smaller, self contained programs. Anything mission critical should be extra safe in its implementation.
Remember when the Mars Lander crashed because the teams used different measurement systems? It only cost $125 million to build. Good times. đ„

As NASCAR descends upon the streets of Chicago for the inaugural race at the new Chicago Street Course, a new chapter in the sportâs 75-year history will be written.
Since getting into NASCAR Iâve had this one marked on my calendar and wish I couldâve attended it. Iâve never been to Chicago or a NASCAR race, why not get a twofer?
Iâll be watching it from the safety of my own living room this time around. đïž
Manton Reece
Meta adopting ActivityPub has the potential to fast-forward the progress of the social web by years. Ever since I grew disillusioned with Twitter a decade ago and started pushing for indie microblogs, then writing a book about social networks and founding Micro.blog, I could only dream of a moment where a massive tech company embraced such a fundamental open API.
Iâve been trying to keep my nose out of the discussions around this on Mastodon. Opinions vary, of course, and some folks are very angry about the whole thing. It mostly boils down to folks in marginalized and discriminated against groups who made their homes on Mastodon being afraid. They donât want to have to deal with the hate that will come along with an extremely popular, large, instance. I canât say that I blame them.
Iâm hopeful this will all work out and wonât divide the community.đïž

Leaf: I would like to learn more about the fae, could you tell me where a good place to start would be? maybe book recommendations? or specific fairy tales to look into? thank you so much
Ah, welcome. It is always good to see those who wish to broaden their knowledge of the old stories. As to the Fae, it depends on what youâre looking for. You see, the Folk did not arise from a singular instance of Mythology, but from an amalgamation of many cultural traditions and stories. For Ireland we have the Tuatha de Danann and their battles against the Fir Bolg and eventually become the Aos Sidhe. There are the Welsh Tylwyth Teg who steal fair haired children from their beds and leave changelings in their place. The Scottish hold great pride in their Seelie and Unseelie courts, while the Scandinavian people whisper fearfully of Trolls, Gnomes, Shapeshifters, Wights, and Werewolves. Will you look to the Norse for stories of Light Elfs, Dwarfs, and Disir? Or to the Germanic Wichtlein who aided miners, and are one of the distant precursors to both the Goblins and Dwarfs we imagine today?Or would you prefer to move forward to the Victorian age where Fae were brought together to diminutive sprites and fanciful little magics that you might find in Peter Pan, A Midsummer Nightâs Dream, or the Faerie Queene? It really depends on what youâre trying to find. The Lore of the Fae is vast and encompasses the traditions of many different European cultures, each unique and important in its own way. I can include below a full list of all the sources I happen to possess at this time. Hopefully they will grant your desire of providing an excellent place with which to begin your research.

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) Sweden
1Â Â The Swan Number 17 (1914-15)
2Â Â Altarpiece Number 1 (c1915) oil on canvas
3 notebook page from A work on Flowers, Mosses and Lichen. © Stiftelsen Hilma af Klints Verk
A  serpentinegalleries.org  âŠher work from the early 20th century pre-dates the first purely abstract paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich.  Â
B   theartstory.org       [Hilma] was a pioneer. Described as a mystic and a medium, af Klint conducted séances and communicated with spirits, even receiving a message from higher forces to create her most notable, devotional body of work, Paintings for the Temple. Yet, af Klint's sensitivity surrounding the ethereal was married to an analytical and scientific way of navigating the world. She was an eager botanist, well read in natural sciences and in world religions. With unsurpassed wisdom and in anticipation of human foolishness, not only did af Klint state that her work was not to be shown for 20 years following her death, but she also stipulated that no work could be sold separately, ensuring that her artworks could not become misunderstood commodities.
C   theartstory.org         Fittingly as the final pieces for the âPaintings of the Templeâ, Af Klint produced three large âAltarpiecesâ. Looking back to an earlier golden age (and forwards to another one), the painting brings to mind an Egyptian temple, which using a highly developed intuitive intelligence, was built in line with the rising and setting sun. The 'pyramid' is an equilateral triangle divided into rainbow building block sections, with a run of oval discs adding more stability as a spine down the centre. The 'sun' rises above, and all of the saturated highly colored shapes are set against a black background. Each one of these wide spectrum of colors has symbolic meaning within Theosophical and Anthroposophical spiritualist theory. Furthermore, the triangle is an ancient symbol which "points towards enlightenment, connecting the material and the spiritual worlds", as suggested by the Serpentine Pavilion's description of the work.
For af Klint, these were instinctively produced works that possessed spiritual messages in need of decoding.
Art critic Adrian Searle claims that the works are "diagrams and abstractions from ideas - not wholly abstract, more representations of elements of an unseen world, and of invisible forces". One possible spiritual interpretation of the work, is that the triangle represents humanity reaching up towards heaven, which is the underlying journey of all spiritual life. Another understanding, arrived at through af Klint's knowledge of Theosophical theories, is that the work depicts the descending of spirit into matter, and matter ascending into spirit.
D   thertstory.org   Daniel Birnbaum, Ann-Sofi Noring, and others, state that "No one painted like this at that time: remarkable color combinations, monumental formats, shapes that are once both organic and otherworldly" emphasizing the transcendental essence of the works (not easy to articulate entirely in words) and the importance of interpreting the works as such.
E   guggenheim.org      Af Klintâs first major group of largely nonobjective work, The Paintings for the Temple, grew directly out of those belief systems (Theosophy). Produced between 1906 and 1915, the paintings were generated in part through af Klintâs spiritualist practice as a medium and reflect an effort to articulate mystical views of reality. Stylistically, they are strikingly diverse, incorporating both biomorphic and geometric forms, expansive and intimate scales, and maximalist and reductivist approaches to composition and color. She imagined installing these works in a spiral temple, though this plan never came to fruition. In the years after she completed The Paintings for the Temple, af Klint continued to push the bounds of her new abstract vocabulary, as she experimented with form, theme, and seriality, creating some of her most incisive work.

Argent unveils first office blocks at ÂŁ5bn Brent Cross site
Argent Related has revealed designs for the first three office buildings at its ÂŁ5bn Brent Cross Town development in north London.
The offices are located next to 50 acres of parks and playing fields along with 6,700 new homes, restaurants, leisure, shops, sport facilities, schools and student accommodation.
The first 550,000 sq ft of office space at Brent Cross Town will bring together innovative companies, academic organisations, start-ups and scale-ups to âcreate a new, market-leading business ecosystem that on completion will total some 3m sq ft of space for 25,000 workers.â
Argent said: âThe ecosystem will bring together a range of sectors who share a desire to be part of a network greater than their own and hold common values of championing quality of life and sustainability.â
The first three buildings are positioned around a new main square and adjacent to the entrance of the new Brent Cross West station that will be completed in 2022.
The new office buildings
Number 2 Brent Cross Town is set to be a factory for new ideas and innovation. Its design by Hawkins\Brown architects has 103,000 sq ft of flexible floorplates, allowing start-up and scale-up businesses to become part of a collaborative community of creators. The seven-metre-high ground floor space is accessible to the public, encouraging residents and visitors to engage with the work inside through events and exhibitions. This building has a timber structure and will use zero carbon heating and cooling systems.
Number 3 Brent Cross Town is designed by ShedKM architects and provides 221,000 sq ft of office space, with an expansive double height reception offering easy access from the station entrance. Design features include a timber floor structure, flexible open floorplates leading onto balconies and a striking warehouse-style roof pavilion with terraces and far-reaching views of the parks and Hampstead Heath beyond.
Number 4 is Brent Cross Townâs beacon timber-framed building designed by Studio Egret West architects, providing 250,000 sq ft of thoughtfully considered, flexible and well-lit floorplates, with a top-floor âlanternâ feature and a generous wrap-around rooftop balcony with panoramic views over the city. If required, numbers 3 and 4 can be connected to provide c. 500,000 sq ft of space, with expansive c. 45,000 sq ft floorplates. Their position at the gateway to Brent Cross Town suits major organisations with an outward-looking focus who value easy links to both central London and the rest of the UK.
Nick Searl, Partner of Argent Related and Joint-Lead of Brent Cross Town, sais: âWe believe the future of great work lies in collaboration, and that our cities need to provide high-quality space for employees and businesses to come together.
âBrent Cross Town will be created to enable a better work-life balance, to encourage active and outdoor lifestyles, while providing places for innovation, mentoring and meeting of minds that cannot be achieved working from home.
âWe remain confident in the requirement for physical office space that can flex and evolve with the requirements of its occupiers.â
Councillor Daniel Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council, said: âBrent Cross Town is an exciting development for Barnet. Its connectivity to the rest of the UK will help attract world-class businesses and talent to the borough, while boosting skills and employment locally.
âOur new 180-acre park town has been designed so businesses are supported by open spaces, community facilities, retail and new homes; responding to changing behaviours towards living and working.â
