Post-election 2024 started out somber, weepy, and kind of hopeless for many of us. Thank goodness for my old pal, singer/songwriter/producer, Steve Postell. A long-time news junkie, he determined this day he was through. He pulled me and the rest of us out of the muck––back into the music, art, and the land of the living. 

We processed together a bit first and then shifted gears with Steve singing his My Parade, which perfectly spoke to his altered focus with an invitation for us to join him in acceptance, awareness, and gratitude of sorts. 

He segued into great stories––his relationship with David Crosby and how Our House came to be, The Immediate Family, awaiting a possible Grammy nom this week for their amazing Denny Tedesco doc, how they came to be, and where they are now––when Steve first became aware of the section backing James Taylor, the moment that opened the door to the full circle back around with all of them––being compared to Jackson Browne to befriending and working with hiim––teen art class with Bob Dylan to coming thisclose to playing with him––producing and playing with so many of his heroes, and them playing with him––his current solo record deal, upcoming show, more Our House dates to come, Immediate Family dates as schedules permit… life is rich, life is good, even if we’re Walking Through These Blues––his spectacular song on his upcoming LP that he closed with. 

Steve and I go back to the heady days of the New York club scene in the 80s. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleeker Street, and Steve was fresh out of Pure Prairie League. I was RockStar struck. I booked him that day and have continued to for the past 35 + years wherever I went and whatever I did. When I had my book launch at The Federal in LA it was Steve’s Night Train Music Club I went to. As he always does, he put together a most kick-ass jam band. A rotation of the best players on the planet, some of whom comprise, with Steve, The Immediate Family. That’s another of Steve’s ongoing passion projects. 

I went into this evening a semi-paralyzed mess. I leave uplifted, reminded that friendships, music, work, fun, love, and service will see me through. Thanks, Steve! I trust you saved more than me this night.

California, No. 4. Know what I like about all this vinyl nonsense? Listening so deliberately with no skipping starts putting songs I’ve heard so much I don’t hear them anymore back into their original contexts and refreshing them. Example: I’ve heard Fire and Rain too often and have learned to screen out the sadness and ignore that growling cello or bass or whatever it is, which only barely obeys the song chord changes. It’s really effective and ominous like a musical version of Churchill’s Black Dog of Depression, and lyrically elemental stuff like rain fire sunshine moonlight highways frost etc runs through the whole set. Note: hi, Russ Kunkel! Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Steve Postell and I go back to Bleecker Street in the heady daze of the New York club scene. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café and Steve was fresh out of Pure Prairie League. I was RockStar struck. I booked him that day and have continued to for the past 35 + years wherever I went and whatever I did. When I had my book launch at The Federal it was Steve I went to. He put together the most kick-ass jam band, as he always does. Did you ever see his Night Train Music Club? did, a gazillion times. A rotation of the best players on the planet, a bunch of whom comprise, with Steve, The Immediate Family.

Steve performed on and co-produced a CD for renowned producer/guitarist and songwriter Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar. The CD features a star-studded cast, including guest appearances by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Michael McDonald. This CD led to the formation of The Immediate Family, which, in addition to Steve, includes legendary session men Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel & Russ Kunkel.  Since forming, The Immediate Family has sold out two tours in Japan, where they recorded a live CD. They have released numerous videos and a third EP and LP on Quarto Valley Records. Their first single, Cruel Twist, reached the top 10 on the blues charts. The band is featured in an award-winning documentary by “Wrecking Crew” director Denny Tedesco. 

Most recently, Steve, who was in rehearsals to tour with David Crosby before his sudden passing, did tour  Our House, The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with Crosby’s friends and family.

Steve won two HOLLYWOOD MUSIC IN MEDIA awards for best song in the Americana/Roots and The Blues categories. His last CD features guests including David Crosby, John Oates, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, and Jennifer Warnes. Steve was the project coordinator for the Shout Factory anniversary release of the Jennifer Warnes/Leonard Cohen project, Famous Blue Raincoat, and is the composer for the documentary Dying to Know, about Timothy Leary and Ram Dass, narrated by Robert Redford. Steve recorded and mixed Ravi Shankar’s final two performances, both to be released on DVD. He recently produced CDs for Dan Navarro (whose hit songs include Pat Benatar’s “We Belong”) and Weather Report alumni Alphonso Johnson, both of which are charting in their respective categories. Steve contributed guitar to David Crosby’s last solo album, Sky Trails. Steve’s latest CD, Walking Through These Blues, features a host of guests, including David Crosby, Iain Matthews, Tony Furtado, Bekka Bramlett, Jeff Pevar, Greg Leisz, and many others.

Did I mention Steve has the voice of an angel? Hopefully, we’ll get a taste of the delicacy allowed on my diet.

Favorites : This Is Spin̈al Tap (1984)

There are classic comedies, and there are iconic movies about rock and roll, and most of the best output from both of those genres can barely hold a candle to the mastery of This Is Spin̈al Tap.  This film holds the rare honor of being a landmark comedy, a landmark rock film and a landmark in the world of mockumentary.

Spin̈al Tap, the UK-based band with the rare honor of being the loudest outfit in rock and roll, is attempting to revitalize their career after a nearly decade long hiatus.  Lead guitarists David St. Hubbins (MIchael McKean) and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), along with bassists Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) (the core members of Spin̈al Tap), decide to embark on a tour of the United States in honor of their new album Smell The Glove.  Documentary filmmaker Marty DeBergi (director Rob Reiner) decides that this tour will be the opportunity to capture the legendary band, but with many years passed since their last dance with success, the band has several hard truths to face.  Along with keyboardist Viv Savage (David Kaff), current drummer Mick Shrimpton (R.J. Parnell) and manager Ian Faith (Tony Hendra), the band embarks on a tour that will make them legendary (in one way or another).

Rob Reiner hit a home run with this film.  The mockumentary approach is pitch perfect, with the comedians in the lead role pulling off being a band in terms of both charisma, personality and talent.  With that core element in place, Reiner surrounds the group with tons of up and coming comedic quick-witted talents (many of whom would have incredibly successfully careers in their own right), and the result is pure gold.  Reiner is smart enough to set up the situations and let the people in front of the camera cut loose, and he was apparently patient enough to take what surely amounted to hours and hours of footage in order to put together the final presentation that we all know and love.  The humor is nearly unmatched, and the human drama is appropriate and strong enough to propel the story forward while helping spare the humor from doing all of the heavy lifting.

Speaking of humor, anyone who has ever remotely cared about rock and roll or been in a band probably has this movie high on their list of favorites.  The movie is funny on it’s own merit, but when it comes to the musical jokes, that humor is working on a completely separate and equally funny level.  Be it struggles with managers, logistics and executives, struggles with creative direction, or struggles with relationships that affect the band dynamic, every struggle under the collective musical sun shows up.  The scene between Marty and Spin̈al Tap where they go over album reviews is some of the funniest improvisation around, and Nigel’s tour of his equipment birthed what is arguably the most quotable moment of the film.  Even subtle musical jokes land, like every core member of the band playing bass on the song Big Bottom.

Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, all successful as individuals, went on to have a legendary run of improvisation-based comedies, and This is Spin̈al Tap started it all.  These three had a comedic chemistry that is undeniable right out the gate.  Tony Hendra is excellent as the manager attempting to survive while being way in over his head, while June Chadwick killed in her role as the distracting girlfriend.  David Kaff steals several moments as Viv Savage.  Rob Reiner is wonderful as the straight man, turning in a strong performance despite doing double duty.  Fran Drescher, Fred Willard, Billy Crystal and a handful of other famous names turn in wonderful comedic moments.

I’ve been on the search for the most quotable movie for many, many years, and This is Spin̈al Tap undoubtably always finds its way into the argument.  Plain and simple, this film has no contemporary equals, and only finds comparison from films by members from the original camp (or those associated).
