Career Diversification
For some, diversification (of jobs/career) is a strategy for job security.
"... [A]nalysts' choice to diversify is rooted in concerns about future job security. We find that more diversified analysts are less likely to experience job turnover and leave the profession but are not more likely to advance their careers." - Journal article IS DIVERSIFICATION A JOB SAFETY NET FOR SELL-SIDE ANALYSTS?, 2020, By Vadim S. Balashov and Zhanel B. DeVides https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/jfir.12219
I also found an old (2014) article that touted diversification....
"In the age of diversification, you need to have multiple sources of income and the best way to accomplish that is by having an entrepreneurial mindset." - Are You Ready For The Age Of Career Diversification? By Dan Schawbel, Forbes https://www.forbes.com/sites/danschawbel/2014/01/10/are-you-ready-for-the-age-of-career-diversification/?sh=a738d5754cab

Braun's Promise of a Pencil
Adam Braun asked a begging boy what he would want if he could get any in the world, the boy responded, "a pencil." The conversation happened when he traveled in India, which changed his life. He founded Pencils of Promise as a charitable organization with just $25 dollars and it has built 150 schools across Africa, Asia, and Latin America till now.
How did Braun build community?
Although Adam Braun had not much money when he decided to found Promise of Pencils, he knew what he will do and what his concept was. He’d even begun to raise by forgoing birthday presents and ask for donations instead. What he did for those children can easily influence people around. As Braun mentioned that he made two big bets early on Pencils of Promise, which one of them is using social media to build the digital community. In reality, it led to good results. As the article “ Adam Braun: How He Started Pencils of Promise ” said, Social networks get people to connect to your mission. And once they’ve connected to your mission, they’ll not only donate, their peers will donate to you too because they’ll see how important your work is to their friend. Pencils of promise attracts a lot of people to follow them and donate by using social media accounts. They did well in disseminating their values to the public. I believe social media networks help a lot with Adam Braun building community.
Sustainable Enterprise
As "How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change," from Ivy Magazine referred, Adam Braun doesn't like the word "non-profit", he thought all the companies will be built as "for profit" and "for purpose." He thought the purpose was more significant than making profit or not for an organization. In his opinions, it is appropriate to make profits for a company who contributes more value to society. I guess because of in the correct idea about marketing and raising method, it helps Braun to create a sustainable enterprise.

The Promise of a Pencil
Introduction
For this week, we were asked to look at Adam Braun and his story Pencils of Promise, and his book The Promise of a Pencil from an article by Dan Schawbel.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/danschawbel/2014/03/18/adam-braun-how-he-started-pencils-of-promise/#4d80271536c7
How did Braun build community in his organization?
In 2008, Braun deposited $25 into an account in hopes of building a school in the developing world. He decided to force birthday presents and asking for donations instead. By doing so, Braun has been able to reach out to his community to gather millions in donations, allowing him to break ground on more than 200 schools around the world and bring quality education to more than 20,000 children. Braun has made his company mission to have a compelling purpose, and give people a feeling of purpose.
How did he create a sustainable enterprise?
Growing up, Braun started working at a hedge fund at just the age of 16. He also learned a lot from studying wall street. To keep the company sustainable, Braun uses non-profit and for-profit strategies. He used social media to expand on this idea, by creating donation pages outlining what the organization was about and what the money would be going toward. This is a great way for advertising for a company to receive donations and be shared across the wed for millions of people to see.
What role did social media play?
Social media had a huge part in Brauns idea by allowing his idea to be seen. With postings on social media asking for donations, millions of people can see the cause and read up on what he is trying to accomplish. It also allows people who see his page to share the page and start a viral spread of awareness for it.

Pencils of Promise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SelvUz8Zr3k
I recently read two articles about entrepreneur, Adam Braun. He founded a non-profit organization called Pencils of Promise, which has built more than 150 schools in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and provided education for 30,000 first-time students. His inspiration came from a time when he was traveling in India for college. He met a boy begging on the streets and asked him what he would want if he could have anything in the world. The boy answered, “A pencil.” This inspired him to help children in poverty receive education.
Adam Braun: How He Started Pencils of Promise: https://www.forbes.com/sites/danschawbel/2014/03/18/adam-braun-how-he-started-pencils-of-promise/#2534f0ad36c7
How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change: http://magazine.ivy.com/2015/04/adam-braun-pencils-of-promise/
Online Community Building
The biggest part of Braun’s community building in my opinion is the purpose. According to The Social Organization, “people need a compelling purpose. Their contribution must have a purpose, and that purpose must be meaningful to them, or they won’t participate.” Braun’s organization elicits an emotional response from people that makes them want to help.

https://www.foundationlist.org/top-10-employment-websites-for-finding-foundation-jobs/
Sustainability
To keep the organization sustainable, Braun utilizes a combination of strategies used in both non-profit and for-profit organizations. He says that every business decision he makes is filtered through the question, “Will this provide long-term ROI?” To make his non-profit organization successful, he approaches it in the same way an entrepreneur would approach a for-profit business.
The Role of Social Media
Braun says that at the beginning, he knew social media would become part of the fabric of our society, and that he could take advantage of it to grow his business. Before he had a single major donor, he focused solely on building an engaged online community, which eventually led to over 35,000 personal fundraisers for his organization. He says, “Social networks don’t get people to donate, they get people to connect to your mission. And once they’re connected to your mission, they’ll not only donate, their peers will donate to you too because they’ll see how important your work is to their friend.”

Final Entry - Caitlin Maeve Kirkwood-Woollams - Embody
Conceptual Statement:
The main purpose of our artefact is to show the connections between different aspects of a person, and celebrate what makes us all individuals. Our piece shows that there is a lot to a person, and there are always some hidden parts that you won’t know about until they are revealed.
Our group was formed on the foundation of creating an interactive user experience. Two of our members were already looking into the subject matter of forcedly adopted out children, and the reuniting of those children with their brith families. So from the start of the project we wanted to look at and show what makes a person who they are.
That led us to personal identity. We have found a lot of difficulty in trying to portray personal identity, not everyone would be able relate to our portrayal it. So we changed our theme to accommodate that while still heading on the same path. Celebrating individuality allows us to work with personal identity, portraying different parts of it, while also being able to celebrate it, and hopefully making it more relatable to a wider audience.
As we worked on the physical aspects we wanted to make sure that we had the physical user interaction as the main focus of the piece. Revealing hidden aspects of the self via UV light, making the thumb print on the back glow in the darkness and UV light, and being able to touch the piece creating a tactile experience for the user. Our original designs differ greatly from the physical artefact, but I believe we have learnt from what can be achieved, and what will work better physically. We’re trying to leave as little as we can to misinterpretation. It has made a lot of our design quite literal in it’s visual representation.
Contextual Statement:
This project comes from our group being formed through our members wanting to create an interactive user experience. Two of our members were already looking into the subject matter of forcedly adopted out children, and the reuniting of those children with their brith families. Specifically the Australian Stolen Generation and New Zealand children born out of wedlock stolen in the 1960s. This led us to looking at what makes up a person: their upbringing, genetics, home, friends, personal interests and experiences. As we looked into all of these things, they showed an over arching connection to one’s personal identity. We researched the idea of personal identity, we looked at: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD PROBLEMS & HUMAN POTENTIAL - Inadequate sense of personal identity, Our Identity – What makes our Identity?, and How to Find Your Own Identity and Capitalize on it. We ended up finding a lot more of what makes up our personal identities.
We came to the conclusion that since everyone is diverse we cannot hope to show each personal identity in our one artefact, also not everyone will be able to relate to that. But we can celebrate everyone’s individuality, and represent that through a few aspects that a lot of people can find relatable in some way.
We discussed and decided on creating a physical artefact. We were originally drawn to use a mannequin, but we made sure that we also looked at: a baby mobile, projection mapping, UV interaction, personalised images, and sculpture. For all our research into the different ideas like Mesmerising Projection Mapping Demos, which was looking quite impractical due to the time constraints. We just kept coming back to the mannequin idea as the physical human representation. We’ve also added the ideas of UV interaction, sculpture, and looked into having a tactile physical experience. Like originally looking at cutting holes into the back of the mannequin to allow our users to reach in feel, pull, and hold physical representations of different aspects of one’s personal identity.
As we got into the physical making of our interactive mannequin sculpture, a lot of our design ideas did not come to fruition. We had envisioned the DNA draping across and off of the shoulder, the holes to be cut into the back of the mannequin, aspects to be expressed through the physical sculpture, and more user interactive features than just the UV and being able to touch it. As we created we found a lot of the designs that didn’t come to fruition were impractical, or didn’t help portray the theme the way we want it to. We’ve brought through the aspects of individual identity that we wanted to: roots, family, where you come from, your DNA, the thumb print being the personification of individuality, the hand of humanity, and the some of the hidden things people think and feel, the deeper inner workings of the mind.
We want to show the connections between different aspects of a person, to celebrate what makes us all individuals. Our piece shows that there is a lot to a person, and there are always some hidden parts that you won’t know about until they are revealed.

Being busy is slang for your not a priority. No one is too busy to text you back, to show up on time, be present and show they care. We are all busy but seem to have time to do things we care about. this is literally an essay i wrote in 2018. it’s almost 2021.
Generation Z: Too Incredulous to Participate, too Ingenious to be Tethered
One thing that sets today’s youth apart from other generations is the inherent irony in their character. Generation Z (Gen Z) or the cohort of individuals born between 1995 and the late 2000s (Chaney, Touzani, & Slimane, 2017) is troubled with problems such as economic decline and financial insecurity, but they managed to make room for thinking they might not want a job. As a result, their predecessors brand them as idle or unprepared for employment, much less a career. This may be true in some cases, but in true ironic fashion, Generation Z’s reluctance to be employed is just a manifestation of their incredulous ingenuity.
Primarily, Gen Z trusts corporations and the government less than any other generation. Gen Z came of age in a time after the world witnessed events like the Great Recession and 9/11 Attacks, which brought about economic downslope and political upheaval (Scott, 2016). These trends continued and imposed financial insecurity and political reinvention, illustrated by events such as, but not limited to, the rise of strongman leaders, the domination of global corporations, and the hike of college education rates. Such events continued to jeopardize stability of existing social constructions in the eyes of Gen Z; and as a result, they developed incredulity toward these constructs, specifically the government and multinational corporations.
An 18-month long investigation conducted by economist and professor Noreena Hertz (2016) revealed that only 6% and 10% of Gen Z trusts corporations and the government, respectively. Words such as “exploitative” and “untrustworthy” were even used to describe multinational corporations. This educated skepticism proved to be a key factor when Gen Z started to turn away from the idea of employment and dependence on the government.
Predictably, Gen Z became self-directed realists who would rather engage in entrepreneurial ventures than be employed. Majority of them—61% of high school students and 43% of college students—prefer ingenious income sources like opening their own businesses over traditional means like being an employee (Schawbel, 2014). More evidences of Gen Z's inventive mindset include the rise of crowdsourcing applications like Kickstarter, which allows anyone to fund the creator of an entrepreneurial project; and the ubiquity of monetized content-creation on sites like Youtube and Instagram in the form of videos and strategic product promotion. All aforementioned evidences illustrate how Gen Z favors to direct their lives while utilizing their interests and innovative pragmatism over traditional dependency on social (sic) institutions.
In brief, Generation Z’s distrust in societal stability makes them reluctant to pursue what the older generation often refer to as “real jobs” that can lead to a more definite career path. Consequently, their disinclination may be misinterpreted as laziness; however, as what was previously discussed, Gen Z is wired to exert creative efforts to direct their lives and stay away from instability as much as they can. The youngest generation may be too perplexed at this point to arrive at a final decision regarding their careers, but they are clever enough to ask the right questions and trust the right people. The future is in good hands, after all. (500 words)

"Make sure that you do something that you feel has a sense of purpose. There are lots of ways to get meaning in life but you certainly want to do something that gets you the feeling that you are doing something that is worthwhile. At the end of the day, a lot of our identity comes from work and if you don’t do something that you find purpose in you are not going to truly enjoy if you are not going to truly take value from this. We live in an incredible time where we cannot only make a living but we can get satisfaction from it. For many years most of the jobs were things you did money in order to enjoy outside of work, but now we have this unprecedented time where you can actually do things and enjoy them at the same time. We should make sure that we are indeed living in that way."

Jessica Alba
