This is my second dark rye bread, altogether satisfied but need to get it up much more. Great taste with whole wheat flour, rye flour and white flour with a 1:2:4 ratio. So much more to learn but so much fun to make these kind of breads. Perhaps time to make a motherdough. Golden Hands and Golden Fingers ~ Priam, the shepherd

An excerpt from chapter 1 of GHGF, where Priam visits Gethin’s mother.

“Enid?” Priam stepped inside, flooded with the warmth of the fire immediately. “It’s me.”

“Oh, Priam.”

The woman sitting by the fire was hunched in her chair, shawl crumpled on her lap. She was still thin, far too thin, but she’d gained some weight in recent weeks. She was getting better. But as the days when that attack took place came around each year, she would spiral, and it was as though she were back on that first day, screaming for Dwyn and Gethin. Priam had been too young then to really remember anyone's pain but his own.

Dwyn was buried in the village plot, too close to Enid's home. She claimed, at times, she could hear him calling her from the plot. She really ought to leave it behind, but she wouldn’t budge. Perhaps she was afraid that, were she to move to another house, less than a mile up the road, that Gethin would never find her if he returned. In a way, he understood. He simply knew none of his family would ever come back. Each one of them was buried in the plot, not too far from Dwyn.

“You’re early today.” She shuffled in her seat, as though she might stand, but didn’t.

“How are you?”

“Oh, I’m alright. Della's gone to fetch me more firewood. Such a nice girl. You don’t need to do it for me today.”

“Good. And food?”

“I have enough. My darkbread is almost gone, and I have no flour-”

“I’ll get flour for you. I’ll bring it by in the morning.” He glanced around the one-roomed cottage. It looked fairly tidy; nothing smelled any worse than usual, nothing too out of place. “Do you have enough water?”

“Yes, I can manage.”

“Good.” Priam stood by the fire for a moment, rubbed his hands together. It was always good to linger, in case she asked for something he hadn’t thought of, or if she wanted to speak. Her friends did their best, but they still had households to run, and she didn’t have many casual visitors. “Is there anything else I can do for you before I head home?”

“No, no.” She shut her eyes for a moment. “That’s all for today.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.” She sighed. “I’m so tired today. I went for a long walk, took me all morning.”

“Oh, that’s good. It was beautiful today. Where did you go?”

“All around, everywhere. I even saw you and Twili out in the fields. You’re so tall now, aren’t you? You looked like Dwyn. He was tall.” Her hands gripped onto her knees. “I even walked a little into the woodlands.”

“You shouldn’t be going in there alone,” he said before he could stop himself. “If you fell, or if anything-”

“I know, I know. I didn’t go far, I promise. I just wanted to feel the trees around me. They have such life in them. The forest is so alive here.”

The forest bred death, as far as Priam was concerned.

“This woodland is one of Luyu’s favourites, so they say. Maybe you’ll see Her one day on a hunt.”

“Maybe.” If she believed Luyu might be out there somewhere, wandering the woodland and looking for souls to bless and curse, who was he to ruin it for her? “I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for Her.”

“If you do see Her-”

“I know. Don’t look Her in the eye, and don’t shoot the wolf.”

She smiled. “Thank her, for watching over Dwyn. And my Gethin.”
