Thinking about adopted au Ponyboy and how he watched Soda and his daddy tossing a dirty old baseball in front of the house.

Ponyboy was watching from the window, aching to join in but still feeling too out of place, as if he was intruding on a long standing thing between Soda and his their daddy. He couldn’t bring himself to push open the rackety door and sprint over to them, so he chose to just sit and look out the window with longing in his eyes.

Darry stood behind him, the same ache filling his own chest. He used to toss that same ball with their dad, he used to run his small body over and hug their dad after he caught a faster toss. He misses it an awful lot, but he feels too old for it now. Too old to miss throwing a dusty ball with his dad, too old to wanna spend time ruffling his little brother’s hair before throwing him onto his back and running in circles and feeling Soda’s body shake with laughter.

Darry had made his peace with the fact that he would ache for this lost feeling for maybe years. But when he saw that longing in his baby brother’s eyes, his heart hurt. He knew Ponyboy still felt outta place in their family sometimes, even with the months he’d been there. But it killed him to watch that in real time, especially when it was over something he knew Soda and Dad would be more than willing to include him in.

“You wanna go toss with ‘em?”

Ponyboy whipped around, scared that he’d been spotted. His silence was enough of an answer for Darry to pick him up and start running towards the door, tickling his sides as he heard the more and more common noise of Pony’s laughter bubbling up. He stood on the small porch step and yelled out to get the attention of the two others in the yard.

“Baby brother here wants to toss with ya!”

At his statement, Soda’s face lit up, thrilled with the fact that his baby brother wanted to do something with him instead of just Darry. Their dad smiled his signature grin, the one that reflected so clearly on his first two boys, and waved a hand over, tossing the ball to Soda again.

Soda ended up tossing the ball to Ponyboy and pretended not to notice the bittersweet smile and longing eyes on his big brother’s face. He also looked back towards his dad and missed the way Darry was slowly creeping back towards the house. If he had looked, maybe he would’ve seen the way Darry was begging with his eyes for someone to ask him to stay, to toss the ball to him and make him join in. But Soda didn’t see and Ponyboy was still to busy enjoying feeling included.

But Darrel Sr noticed. He seemed to have this sixth sense when it came to his oldest, his first boy, the son who carried his name and was damn near his carbon copy, ‘cept for his eyes, Darry had his mama’s eyes. But when Soda’s hand let go of the ball and it flew towards Pony, Darrel Sr looked away for a moment and he locked eyes with his oldest.

“Junior, I know you ain’t tryna get outta this”

His eyebrow was raised and his tone was loose and he had a goofy smile on as he beckoned Darry back over. He couldn’t help the way his heart filled when Darry’s face lit up and he trotted back over to his dad and little brothers.

Before the four of them knew it, hours had passed. The sun was going down and Ponyboy had plopped down on the bottom porch step to watch it, Darry had sat down next to him and felt his brother’s warm head fall against his arm before Darry shifted to have throw his arm around the small boy’s shoulders. Soon enough, Darrel and Soda were coming over and standing next to Darry. Darrel’s hand found its way to his first son’s shoulder and he squeezed tight before relaxing. Soda was talking away about something that Two had done earlier that was funny.

Eventually, their mama came out too, standing on the porch behind all of them and watching her boys together. Her husband, the boy who married her straight outta high school and loved her every minute. Her first son, the boy who made her a mama, who threw himself into everything he did with everything he was and was working towards getting out and riding higher than this town. Her second, the boy who’d been her baby for years, the one who clung to her from the moment he was in the world, who loved like it was all he was meant to do. Her baby, the boy who joined their family in January and she’d adored ever since, with his nose in a book and a passion for learning everything. Her boys. Her family.

An oldest son who would always protect his baby brothers. A middle son who would continue to love his brothers with his entire being. A littlest boy who may not share their blood but would always be their baby brother.

two indisputable facts about the walls of the curtis house:

1. there is a long line of crayon drawn from one end of the hallway to another. soda’s bedroom door has a crudely-drawn horse on it, underneath the crayon line. the crayon mark is referred to as “load-bearing” and cannot be removed.

2. the doorframe to the kitchen desperately needs to be replaced, but it never will be, because there’s a makeshift height chart on there with little markings for every member of the family that date back to when their dad was a kid, because it’s the house he grew up in and grandma curtis made sure to keep track at least once every year, and darrel kept up the tradition after his parents died. darrel 6/7/30—3 y/o—shoes on. darry jr. 4/17/58—11 y/o—shoes on. sodapop 8th birthday—no shoes. ponyboy 11/14/53—4 mos.—sock feet. mama curtis has an entry from after she and darrel sr. got married. the gang all get initiated into the family via being measured on the doorframe. soda has never been measured in shoes because he refuses to wear them. nowhere was an actual measurement in inches or centimeters ever used. just a line and a silly little note. so many people are included over the years that it’s unreadable and the gang’s kids will have to start a new list on the other side of the doorframe
