Nine Inch Nails The Fragile released 25 years ago today. Here’s a 1999 digital camera photodump from the months surrounding the album’s release; a surreal, transformative time in my young life. Words can’t describe what it was like, but these photos and textures bring back the strangest hazy memories that feel like a dream: Not even a year out of high school, moving to New Orleans to work for my heroes as they were in the final year of recording a dense, challenging masterpiece of an album. Not everyone was ready for The Fragile at the time, but it now stands as one of the seminal works of pre-millennium art. If you’ve never experienced it, or haven’t in a while, it deserves a focused, solitary beginning-to-end listening in the highest fidelity, on your best sound system, at the loudest volume.

The first episode of Deep Space Nine aired on January 3, 1993. DSN was the first spin-off of the Star Trek the Next Generation universe. There were plans to feature the STNG character Ro Laren, but the actess Michelle Forbes did not want to commit to the series at the time. In place of Ro, a new character was created named Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor). Colm Meaney continued in this series as his STNG character Miles O'brien. Patrick Stewert made a cameo in his role as Captain Jean Luc Picard. The episode introduced several new characters, including Commander Benjamin 'Ben' Sisko (Avery Brooks), Constable Odo (Rene Aberjonois), Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), Lt. Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell), Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton), Quark (Armin Shimerman), and Nog (Aron Eisenberg). Felicia M. Bell appeared as Jennifer Sisko, the wife of Ben and mother of Jake, who died in this episode. The events in the episode took place in 2367 and 2369. The show took place at a space station on the edge of a wormhole. The episode also portrayed the Battle of Wolf 359, which previously had only been referred to due to budget restraints. The episode also introduced the Runabouts vehichles. ("Emissary", Deep Space Nine, TV, Event)

Vintage Visions: Ray Gun
At first I wanted to post just the 1994 stuff but then I said fuck it.
Ray Gun was an influential rock magazine with a revolutionary design aesthetic headed by art director David Carson, whose motto is "why not?"
This blog's header is obviously a homage to the magazine.

Notably infamous was Carson's decision to render a Bryan Ferry interview in dingbats font, because he found the text dull.
Carson left after three years and was succeded by several art directors, including Getty creative director Chris Ashworth and music video director Robert Hales.
Ray Gun was first published in 1992 and had its final issue published in 2000, sort of befitting for a staple 90s magazine.

On November 18, 1994, Star Trek the Next Generation transitioned to the big screen. William Shatner (Captain James T Kirk), James Doohan (Scotty), and Walter Koenig (Chekov) from the original franchise appeared in the film to pass the torch. Leonard Nimoy (Spock), Deforest Kelley (Bones), and George Takei (Sulu) were originally slated to return with Kirk instead but declined. The movie introduced Alan Ruck as Star Fleet Captain Harriman, and a new villian named Soran played by Malcom McDowell. Returning from the TV series were Patrick Stewart (Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Brent Spiner (Data), LeVar Burton (Geordi), Michael Dorn (Warf), Gates McFadden (Beverly), Marina Sirtis (troi), Majel Barrett (computer), Whoopie Goldberg (Guinan), Barbara March (Lursa), and Gwynyth Walsh (B'Etor). The film saw the death of Captain Kirk, which had to be reshot due to dislike at screenings of the original death. It also featured the destruction of Enterprise.
