Manche Menschen haben einen Gesichtskreis vom Radius Null und nennen ihn ihren Standpunkt.
Some people have a scope of view of radius zero and call it their point of view.

looking up quotes from mathematicians and I don't think any of them will beat when the University of Göttingen was debating whether to make Emmy Noether a professor and David Hilbert said "Gentlemen, the faculty is not a pool changing room"

18 August 2024,
Hilbert & Ackermann kind of Entscheidungsproblem-atic day. It's better to let loose any sort of improperly-derived thoughts today. 🖖

It may seem like a big hat but you gotta remember that he has an infinite amount of smaller hats below it and he can always add an even smaller one without needing to make his other hats bigger.
So considering that...

Hellinger-Toeplitz
Two older mathematics students, Otto Toeplitz and Ernst Hellinger, with whom Courant had become acquainted the year before at the university, had left Breslau and gone to Gottingen to study. They wrote with enthusiasm of the mathematics at that university and of a mathematician there named Hilbert.
Breslau began to seem unbearably dull to Courant. He felt that it would be good for him to see some mountains, mathematical as well as geographical. His friend Nelly Neumann, who was also attending the university, felt the same way. In the spring of 1907, the two young people went to Zurich to study for a semester.
It was in Zurich that Courant heard the lectures of Adolf Hurwitz, one of the outstanding analysts of the day, the close friend and the real teacher of the mathematician Hilbert, who was so highly praised by Toeplitz and Hellinger. Although to the end of his life Courant always described Hurwitz's lectures as perfect, he was not stirred by them. He returned, still dissatisfied, to Breslau. That fall he took what money he had, bought a new suit, and set out for Gottingen.

if i could vandalize one thing on wikipedia without anyone noticing i would photoshop david hilbert's hat to be a little bit bigger every day
#math#IM SORRY DAVID HILBERT I KNOW YOU WERE AN IMPORTANT MATHEMATICIAN BUT IM ALWAYS GOING TO REMEMBER YOU FOR YOUR HAT#just learned today that apparently he was the first to use an arrow for implication??? revolutionary frankly#thank you dr hilbert for bringing us GOOD NOTATION#before that apparently they were using a backwards C. that's horrible. can you imagine#hilbert used -> instead of the double arrow. which wasnt in use until 1954. but i have less strong opinions about that#not 100% on the distinction between the 2 arrows tbqh#like in most of my classes we used the double one#but then in intro to mathematical logic i think we used -> ?#anyway yeah i went down a wikipedia rabbit hole which led to me seeing his picture again#truly a hat for the ages#numbers do not lie
