Each state regulates insurance companies, and makes a list available of complaints against each company and how they are decided. It's one more factor you should consider, since the exchange only tells you what the company promises to cover, but the complaints tell you when they fall short of those promises.

I learned this because I did it the other way and chose my dental insurance based on how close a dentist's office was to my home. It turned out to be a pretty lousy dentist's office, and the insurance company made themselves very hard to work with, skirting the truth to try to deny us coverage. Sure enough, when I found them on the state's website, they had the second highest rate of complaints of any company offering insurance of any kind in my state.

So you can save yourself some potential hassle if you google for [state] insurance board and look up the companies before you pull the trigger. Happy holidays and happy insurance shopping!
