‪‪♡‬ Febuwhump 2025 Day 6: Forced to Stay Awake ‪‪♡‬

Or: Mage whumpee forced to stay awake to keep up a magic barrier so all of their friends don't die a horrible death.

“Stay with me, Whumpee. You have to keep going.”

Whumpee’s whole body trembles, their hands outstretched over a glowing circle of runes, fingers twitching as golden light pulses from their palms. Their vision swims, their limbs feel like stone, and their thoughts are slow, sluggish things. How many hours has it even been?

Too many. 

“I-I can’t,” they choke out, their words slow and slurred. The magic is icy cold inside their chest, sapping every ounce of energy they can muster. Their head lolls forward, and it’s only thanks to a strong pair of hands that they manage to stay in their kneeling position instead of slumping to the floor.

“You have to,” Caretaker says, their voice firm. “No pressure, Whumpee, but we all die if you let go of this barrier.”

Whumpee forces their eyes open. A shimmering golden dome surrounds their little group, and on the other side they can see shadowy figures clawing at its surface, dark tendrils slamming against it with enough force to shake the ground beneath them.

Caretaker’s right. If they fall asleep, everyone dies.

But they’re so, so tired.

A shudder wracks their body. They’re running on sheer force of will now. Everything else was burned out hours ago. It’s not enough. It was never going to be enough. They’re just one mage, and not even a particularly powerful one, and they don’t even know for sure that help is on the way.

Whumpee sobs, shaking their head. They don’t want to be the reason no one makes it home. But they just can’t keep this up.

Caretaker puts a firm hand on their shoulder. “Whumpee. Breathe.”

They suck in a gasping breath.

“Good. Again. Just focus on breathing.”

Another breath. Their head swims. They can’t even see straight anymore. The runes flicker.

“Come on! Stay awake!”

Whumpee barely hears them. Their thoughts have dissolved into static. 

Sleep. Just a few minutes of rest-

A sharp pain jolts them back. Caretaker had pinched the delicate skin of their wrist hard, leaving a little purple mark. 

“Focus!” Caretaker’s voice wavers - maybe fear, maybe guilt. “Just a little longer!”

“I… I can’t! Stop it!”

“You can sleep as much as you want when this is over, I promise. But for now you’re staying awake, even if I have to force you.”

im sooooo so late to the party but trust me i have been thinking about THEM!!!

I'm trying to avoid getting spoiled so I haven't looked up what's happening in the Jp server's main story, but for my own sanity I need to ask; is the story at a point where we know whether Lilia will get better/survive his almost-empty magic reserves..? Was it a true death flag from the start or only a plot device for malleus' overblot....?

not yet! I do think they're going to get back to it eventually, but -- keeping it as low spoilers as possible -- there's been...let's just say a LOT going on in the meantime.

I enjoy the implication in Origins that Zevran isn't a very good fighter when we meet him and then after Origins he was utterly terrorizing the Crows. All the levels he gained in the Warden's party actually made him a canonically, significantly more dangerous fighter than he was when the Warden met him.

Warnings: self sacrifice, exhaustion, magical exhaustion, unconsciousness

"No! It's a dead end. No!" Caretaker shouted hopelessly as they skidded to a halt. The others stopped behind them, each of them crying out their own lamentations. Whumper had been chasing them all through the system of caves for who knew how long. They had all been sure that this was the way out.

"There's only one way out of here," Whumpee said solemnly. They turned to face where they had all come from.

"Whumper and their minions are back that way! We can't go back, they'll vaporize us!" Teammate One cried.

"There has to be another way," Teammate Two said as they began to tap on the walls. "There has to be another way."

"We're going to die," Teammate Three said as they began to sob. They collapsed to their knees.

"We're not going to die. It ends here. Right here. Right now. We're ending this," Whumpee said angrily.

"What do you mean, Whumpee?" Caretaker didn't like the look in Whumpee's eyes.

"I can stall Whumper. I can stop them probably. But I can definitely stall them long enough for you all to escape," Whumpee said quickly as they started back down the tunnel. "Run as fast and far as you can. Warn everyone. There will be some who can help you."

"Whumpee, you can't do that! It's suicide!" Caretaker couldn't breathe past the panic gripping their heart.

"I'm the only one who can do this!" Whumpee shouted angrily. "So go! Run! I can take Whumper!"

Before Caretaker could offer more protest, Whumpee hurried down the tunnel. "Whumpee, wait!"

"Let them go, Caretaker, they're buying us time!" Teammate Three shouted as they started to run towards the end of the tunnel. Whumpee had turned right, trying to lure Whumper off. Teammate Three turned left.

Caretaker hesitated at the mouth of the tunnel. They could get to safety. They could get help. They could warn as many as they could. But they wouldn't be able to help Whumpee. To save Whumpee.

They turned away from the team's retreating backs and ran after Whumpee. They couldn't abandon Whumpee. They couldn't let Whumpee die alone.

Caretaker's chest was heaving by the time they reached where Whumper and Whumpee were facing off. The air was heavy with magic and Caretaker could barely breathe past it. Relief filled them as they saw Whumpee still standing, looking relatively unscathed.

Whumper, however, was faring poorly. Their minions had scattered and they were struggling to hold off Whumpee's power. With a cry of pain, Whumper collapsed and remained unmoving on the ground.

"You did it!" Caretaker said with a crow of delight. Whumpee had succeeded. They really were Whumper's match. They had beat Whumper.

Whumpee turned slowly, stumbling a step. "Caret'r," they mumbled as their knees buckled.

"Whumpee, no!" Caretaker shouted as they hurried forward, catching Whumpee before they smacked their face on the ground. "Say something, Whumpee!" Whumpee was limp and pliable in their arms.

"Whumpee!" Caretaker brushed back Whumpee's long hair. Their skin was hot to the touch and they were breathing rapidly. "Whumpee!" Caretaker repeated as they tapped Whumpee's cheek.

Whumpee didn't wake. They had completely exhausted themself. The use of power had been more than Caretaker had ever seen them muster. "Hold on, Whumpee. I'll get you to a healer. Just hold on."

They stood up and began to run. Magical exhaustion was dangerous, deadly even. They couldn't let Whumpee pay the ultimate sacrifice to beat Whumper. "Just hold on!"

How Can You Help Me, Stardust?:

It's the battle theme during a Secret Ending fight, and an interesting genre-swap/remix of How Can I Help You, Stardust? Your character (Siffrin) fights his ally and guide through the time loops he's been stuck in. Its so intense and fast paced compared to the tone for the rest of the game's ending and really emphasizes the absolute stress and despair that being in a timeloop will cause.

it's possible I'm just biased about lou wilson (<3) but my favorite moment out of an episode of many beautiful moments still has to be jammer making a connection with tabby. i always love how much nuance and weight lou is able to bring, the way he can move from comedy to emotional performance when he sees a chance for his character. jammer reaching out to, i cannot emphasize enough, a rock that keeps crossing out his name, and saying we don't have to like each other, we don't have to agree, we can still work together, tell me what you need so that i can help you help us. jammer connecting with tabby and seeking to understand it and tabby responding to say to understand something is to be a part of something. when we understand each other we are a part of something together. when tabby offered jammer's name in a heart i cheered so loud. and then later, when tabby doesn't respond and jammer speaks for it saying that it's shy, it reminded me of jammer's dynamic with evan, how in season 1 jammer helped bring evan into alignment with the group and with the situation. it's teamwork! we're all in this together! even this stupid rock <3

also, jammer realizing that they are in a hospital on trope island and immediately deciding to confirm that by seeing if someone is having sex in a storage closet? peak. perfection. correct answer.
