Humanity V - Stars and Snow

I was waiting outside bundled up to try and keep myself warm against the cold. I had made some arrangements with Hank to take Connor to see the stars.

It may have been a bit too cold to comfortably stand outside as I waited for the boys to arrive it was worth it just to see the shock on the androids face.

Connor had stepped out the car despite his confusion and I greeted him with a wide smile. I had managed to surprise him which was far to rare to give up and reveal my plan so instead of a verbal greeting I merely opened the back door of Hank's car and hopped in myself gesturing for Connor to come back in.

He glanced around confused already guessing I wouldn't provide any answered he turned to Hank who merely shrugged "She said it was time for a field trip."

We had to drive out of the city to escape the light pollution and actually be able to see the stars. The drive wasn't unreasonably long but I could see Hank regret accepting my proposal so quick as I sat in the back of his car singing along dramatically to all the rock songs that came on his car radio.

Despite his appeared annoyance he never turned the volume down or uttered a word.

Finally we made it to a nearby field and while Connor hesitated, there wasn't anything here so how could it be our destination. Yet I bolted out to the middle of a field and finally I could look up at the stars in all their glory.

"Do you see Connor? How could I not risk my life for this!" I laughed spinning arms out wide facing the stars.

I could practically hear the way Hank looked at Connor for an explanation as I allowed my body to fall down into the grass still giddy. My laughter quietened to giggles and I could hear his response to the unspoken question. "Stars are… fascinating lieutenant."

Hank was gruff but he had still agreed to all this and I liked to believe a small part of him enjoyed it. "Yeah right… the stars." I turned my head to see the pair as Hank wandered back to the car to sit privately Connor came and sat down near me his own eyes caught on the tiny lights in the sky.

We sat in silence for a while, I was trying to find constellations and I wondered if Connor even had to try or if whatever made him intelligent gave the answers immediately.

After half an hour of laying in the cold I needed to warm up. Thankfully Hank who had stayed in the car turned the heater on when he saw us walking back so I hadn't had to wait long.

Staring at the stars for so long had reminded me of an episode of am old anime show. And of course I immediately blurted out my thoughts, "We should watch Violet Evergarden, it will teach you so much more about love than I ever could." Hank laughed at that and I rolled my eyes hitting his shoulder "Keep your mind out of the gutter you dirty old man."

"I’m just saying your show can’t teach him as much as a real woman. I'm sure of that, besides the kid has already been to Eden. I should know I had to pay all the charges."

"Hank!" I once again cried out resisting the urge to assault our driver as Connor only watched with amusement, calculations still blurring behind his eyes.

Hank knew the city well and found a place still open and went to get some hot drinks for me and him. Connor had hopped out of the car and I followed him to the nearby playground. I gravitated towards the swings and Connor followed my lead.

I thought of all the years I'd spent in this city growing up here on these playgrounds, how different it was to Connor who only knew adult life. With that I remembered the other activity we'd spoken about.

"Do you want to build a snowman?" I practically sang out in my excitement. Connor once again took a moment to process my request before nodding. I hadn't expected anything crazy but his face was still frozen as if in work mode yet as I leapt up ready to start collecting things to make a face he quickly joined in immediately warming up to the idea and rolling snow to make a body.

We hadn't made an awful lot of progress when Hank walked up shaking his head. "Was there any point in me buying this to keep you warm if you were just going to play in the snow?"

I glanced up smiling quickly thanking Hank and grabbing my own drink before demanding he join in. Begrudgingly he did and between the three of us our snowman was created quickly. I clapped my hands in excitement. It was silly but I love the little creature we had made together. Connor had tried to make perfect spheres but Hank and I had interfered and they turned out a little lopsided but it felt so special. It was silly but it felt like one the best nights I'd had in a long time.

just got to flipping through old photos and found this portrait of #dbhconnor @bryandechart i did last year and never posted.

lots of flaws, lots i'd do different, but y'know what's more fun than picking this apart? seeing how far i've come in only a year, and how much i still have to learn.
