Edwin pulled on his socks and adjusted them carefully, tugging them up — so they sat as high as they could — before he stood and looked at himself in the scratched mirror fixed to the tiled wall of the St Hilarion’s boys changing rooms. He looked ridiculous wearing the school’s Rugby kit. He always did.

Aziraphale shifted uncomfortably in his bed, in part because of the litany of bruises and cuts covering his skin. Mostly part healed, with a handful fresh and stinging from the long journey home. The mattress was too soft after months of making do with hard ground and bedrolls. It swallowed him and what should have brought comfort only made him feel uneasy.

“Cannot believe in a few short hours we will finally be back at the beach.” Charles stretched out over the bed and let his head dangle, upside down, off of the end of it. Ella hummed in agreement, clearly only half paying attention to him. “You could have gone back last summer.” Charles scoffed. “What, and leave you here at the mercy of school and your parents?” She smiled softly over her shoulder at him. “I survived perfectly well before you came along.” Charles rolled onto his belly and looked at her, standing in front of him with one leg propped up on a chair and frowning down and fiddling with the edges of her underwear.

“Oi, Crystal, who’s that?” Charles nudged Crystal’s shoulder and she turned to follow his line of sight. “Oh fuck off Rowland, no, we’re not doing this again.” “What?” Charles frowned at her. “Do what?” Crystal raised her eyebrow and handed the cocktail glass over the bar to the two girls standing on the other side, holding out a card machine for them to tap before turning back to him. “The thing where you see a pretty girl in the bar, flirt with her, dance with her, take her home and moon over her all summer. Then get your heartbroken when she inevitably leaves at the end of August and I have to spend from September until Christmas with you moping on the couch in your underwear eating my cereal.”

Edwin stared at the slip of paper in his hand. He’d been staring at it the entire way home, tucked at the back of the train in a corner, pressed up against the glass and hoping to god and back no one sat next to him. He’d already known really. A small part of him had been hoping he was wrong, that, on this one occasion, he was just being paranoid and anxious. But, as he’d trekked across London to a clinic far away from anywhere he might see anyone he knew, Edwin had known.

This Time

Charles had left the shutters open. He’d done it purposefully, pulling them back either side of the lattice window, and now, as it rises over a still sleeping London, the sun floods in, gradual and liquid, the first hazy, yellow rays of light filtering into the space, broken and squared off. They creep over the desk — crammed full with assorted curios but unoccupied — and fall softly over the empty sofa — haphazardly draped in a blanket and with its cushions missing — before scattering and dissipating across the floor. Dust hangs in the air reflecting light up and across the ceiling and sending fractured blacks and greys dancing over the cabinets and shelves. Long, dark shadows stretch across the walls, curving over the mirror, the filing drawer and the small side desk, offering some darkened refuge for remnants of night as daybreak pushes its way into the inbetween space of twilight. Charles loves this time.  He loves this time of day at this time of year.

If Crystal looked this fed up with Charles this early on a Tuesday it didn’t really bode well for him. “Fine,” he answered cautiously, placing the fork back on his plate. “Brills!” Charles beamed at him and leant forward, sliding his fingers into each other. “I’ve had this epic idea.”
