Pies of Death - wicked wednesdays 

News of the Times Episode 221 | 1783-1852 

In today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays, we look at three stories of deadly pies. 

Our first story from 1783 involves a veal pie.  Interestingly, the news at this time was quite different from Victorian times.  The case seems to be reported in a perfunctory way, almost as if this was a common thing. 

Our second case from 1850, we have covered before regarding the stalking case of a famous actor at the time that led to a raspberry pie laced with Spanish fly in the mistaken belief that this would make him have a passion for her. 

Our last case from 1852 was considered very racy in its day.  An unhappily married woman falls for the young man who comes courting her sister.  It would seem that intimate relations developed with the one stopper to eternal bliss being her husband.  Bring on a deadly onion pie!  Alas! Love seems to evaporate when potential execution looms, and the case developed into a he said / she said. GIFT BALL DELUXE[極上毒入り・ボール]: "Finest-quality Poisoned Ball." This specific wording feels like another play on the English/German pun of "a gift" vs "poison."

GIFT BEREICH[猛毒領域]: "deadlypoison domain/territory/area" and German "Poison Area."

GIFT RING[猛毒の指輪]: "Ring* of Poison" *specifically refers to jewelry, and not just the shape. Once again, a joke piggybacking off a gift-vs-poison and a ring as a kind of deluxe gift.

HOFFNUNG[希望の剣]: "Sword of Hope" in Japanese, and in German, "Hope."

Freund Schild[身代わりの盾]: "Shield of Substitution" and the German for "Friend Shield"

DIAGRAMM German for, you guessed it, "Diagram." Curiously Viz interpreted this as Diagramme, which pluralizes it, "Diagrams." No idea if there's any merit to one over the other.

Sabaki no Koumyou[裁きの光明]: "brightlight of judgement" but of note here Koumyou can refer more specifically to "light emanating from a buddha or bodhisattva, symbolizing their wisdom and compassion"

TROMPETE[神の喇叭]: "Trumpet of God" in japanese and "trumpet" in german

Heiligenschein[光輪]: Japanese term for a "halo" specifically to denote the Christian iconography, lit. "light+ring". And the German for "halo" as well, lit. "Holy+shine".

(For some reason the translator I'm looking at for crossreferencing is telling me it also translates to the French "gloriole" which in turn translates to English as something like "vainglorious" as in to be "excessively proud of oneself." No idea if that's a domino train of meanings that Kubo would have been privvy to at all, but it does rather fit Lille's whole M.O. at that point in the fight )

Kami no SIZE[神の尺度]: "SIZE of God" which just sounds silly. No idea why SIZE is in English and not German, nevermind why "kami no..." is left in Japanese.

Houkai CHIP[崩壊チップ] "Collapse/crumble/breakdown CHIP" I totally forgot about these things considering they didn't do shit. But guess what? The hou[崩] here is the same root as the kuzure[崩れ] in the Shiba family's Tsuiten no Kuzure Uzushio[墜天の崩れ渦潮]: "Falling Heaven's Collapsing Whirling Tide."

Leiden Handt[苦難の手袋]: "Glove of Suffering/Hardship/Trial." (Retroactively renamed from the name Sanrei Shutou[散霊手套]:“Loose Particle Spirit Glove,” used during its original introduction) And "Suffering Hand" in German.

Taiyou-no-kagi[太陽の鍵]: "Key of the Sun."

Men'eki[免疫]: "immunity/immunization" or "being hardened/acustomed to/being unaffected by."...

Seishi-no-gin[静止の銀]: "Silver of Stillness/Repose"

(English name is Angel's trumpet.) The word ”Chosen” is not about Korea, it seems to mean overseas. Actually the place of origin is not Korea but South Asia. As another name it seems that there is a strong toxicity that is not comparable with others, as it is 'Eggplant of Mad', 'Demon King', 'Pitfalls to Hell' and 'Devil Trumpet'. It can cause severe hallucinations, even death. I wonder why so deadly poisonous flowers grow in the riverside of that neighborhood. Once glowing eyes, now dark and dead, And voices scream inside her head, A falling rain of acid tears, Mirrors reflecting all her fears, A fire raging through her veins, Drugs to reduce all her pains, Her porcelain skin, now scarred and bruised, Her staggering beauty, now gone and used. A foreign beauty, now buried alone, A cryptic place where light once shown, Once graceful flight with song and dance, A life of hope and true romance, Now blundering falls and morbid display, Where crystal tears fall every day, A heartless place of death and disease, Where evil comes and goes with ease.
