Help ban declawing in Ontario! Declawing is inhumane. The procedure is painful and has long-lasting, negative effects on cats. Declawing is the amputation of bone, not merely the removal of the claws, as the term “declawing” implies. A bill has been put forward to ban declawing of cats in Ontario and you can help! Visit this website to make your voice heard: maritstiles.ca/teddys-law 🐾 For more info on declawing visit @pawproject pawproject.org . . . #bandeclawing #nomoredeclawing #declaw #declawedanddumped #declawingiscruel #signthepetition #makeyourvoiceheard #wearetheirvoice #pawproject #bandeclawingontario https://www.instagram.com/p/CIve8kgFTd6/?igshid=188kg5nzdq4cf

Good news! Valentine, the cat @zoeysplacerescue rescued in February with freshly declawed paws, who had been immediately dumped in a high kill shelter because his hurting paws caused him to lash out, now has a new family. Just 8 months ago, he was left to die, red listed on the kill list because he was “aggressive.” The @pawproject helped him because his declawed paws were causing him excruciating pain and the infection was spreading. That’s what Paw Project does with their donations. Needless to say, Valentine has taken a long time to trust humans again, but thanks to his wonderful new family, Connie and Milt, and a lot of love and time, he’s finally at his forever home. Valentine is so deserving of a happy ending after everything he went through...happy ending at last ...happy trails sweet Valentine! Have the best life! #zoeysplacerescue #valentine #homeatlast #sweetboy #loveconquersall #declawedanddumped #freshstart #newleaseonlife #pawproject @animalhealthcarecenter

Whoever says "A cat is better off losing its claws than its home," doesn't realize many cats lose both. Meet Stormy: Stormy came into Hamilton Animal Control (Guelph, ON, Canada) as a stray. Stormy has been neutered and declawed (all four paws), so he certainly belonged to someone, but nobody came looking for him at the shelter. Stormy was severely matted and infested with fleas. His skin was red and raw from scratching. He seemed to be experiencing pain in his eyes. He was squinting, and there was an obvious ulcer in one eye. Staff at the shelter started him on eye medication to try to help. Once Stormy’s stray time was done, we were happy to get him out of the shelter and straight to the vet to get a diagnoses. Turns out, Stormy has a serious issue with his eyes called entropion and a second issue called corneal sequestrum. Dr. Fleming at Guelph Animal Hospital volunteered to do the surgery Stormy required for his eyes, (how generous!) and this video is him at the clinic just after his surgery. While he was under anesthetic, Stormy had his teeth cleaned (and one rotten tooth removed), and a cyst was removed from his leg. Once he's had some follow up appointments to be sure everything is healed, Stormy will be available for adoption. Crinkly ear kitty rescue! We rescued D.C. from Hamilton Animal Services. DC came into HAS as a stray. He was neutered and declawed by his previous owners, and he is microchipped, but the chip was never registered so there was no way to contact DC’s owners. This hefty guy is all love bug! Pats and scritches and attention are all he wants. He’s a happy, purry guy. As you can see from the photos, DC has what is called “cauliflower ear” on both ears. We’re going to have our vets take a look to see if there is anything we can do to alleviate the itch DC is suffering from that condition. We’ll also do blood work to be sure there’s nothing internal going on, and we’ll have DC’s foster home try to get a few pounds off of him. We’ll have more updates soon! Welcome DC! We’re so happy you’re here! Available for adoption: Sweet Potato! STATUS: Adoptable AGE AT ARRIVAL: Approximately 5 years old ARRIVAL DATE: November 13th, 2017 GENDER: Spayed Female ADOPTION FEE: $150 NOTES: Sweet Potato was front paw declawed by her previous owners. She will need to stay on a weight loss diet in her forever home. Twenty pounds of Sweet Potato love! Sweet Potato came into Hamilton Animal Control as a stray. How a declawed, twenty pound cat who only wants to take a few steps before laying down becomes a stray is a mystery to us, but we digress… Despite having a pretty bad flea infestation, and a very dirty bum from not being able to turn to clean it, Sweet Potato is as sweet as they come. HAC staff got her bum cleaned up and administered flea treatment, and she seemed to be very thankful for both those things. On the day of her rescue, we took Sweet Potato to the vet for a check up and she is healthy, other than needing to lose quite a lot of weight. Her blood results were normal, and she tested negative for FIV and FeLV. Yay! Here’s a note from Sweet Potato’s foster home: “Sweet Potato is as her name suggests-super sweet! Very purry and friendly, loves pets, being brushed and playing. Due to her large size, she occasionally does the “butt scoot” on the floor after using the litter box as she can’t reach her back end to clean up. If you keep a mat or carpet near the litter tray, she seems to be good at using the same spot so it’s easy to deal with. She also doesn’t mind her back end being washed with a warm cloth which also keeps things clean back there. Once she loses a bit of weight and can reach, she should start cleaning herself again. It’s very sad that her previous owners let her get so large because she is a sweetheart and dealing very well with her new limited diet!” Please adopt Sweet Potato! We rescued Jersey from Hamilton Animal Control yesterday! Jersey came into HAC as a stray, and he was never claimed by his owners, even though he spent more than a month at the shelter. What an absolute doll Jersey is! Such a friendly guy. As you can see from his photos and video, Jersey could use to lose a few pounds. He’s a very hefty boy! He can't properly groom himself, so his back is greasy and dirty from lack of cleaning. Poor guy! Jersey has a vet appointment coming up where he will have a physical, blood work, and where we can get a proper diet started to get him fit! Just like recently rescued Tabitha, Jersey is showing signs of arthritis that is likely being caused by the fact that he is declawed and overweight. Though Jersey’s symptoms are much less severe than Tabitha’s, they’re still present. We’ll have a better idea of the treatment he needs once he’s had his vet visit. For now, Jersey has made himself right at home in his foster home, and he seems very happy to be out of a cage. He's currently enjoying many pats, and much needed brushing. Welcome to Ladybird Jersey! We’re so glad you’re here! Visit Jersey's profile page for more photos and info, and to donate to his care: http://www.ladybirdanimalsanctuary.com/las816/ ... #ladybirdanimalsanctuary #lookwhatlovecando #hamont #hamilton #fatcat #declawed #declawedanddumped #pawproject #thepawproject #stopdeclawing #jersey #fostercat #fosteringsaveslives #animalrescue #rescue #rescued #rescuedcatsofinstagram #catsagram #catstagram #catsofinstagram

George has been waiting a year to be adopted. This handsome guy has a few strikes against him that are likely causing the wait. George is very shy, he doesn't like other animals or children, and he is FIV positive. All reasons that make finding him a forever home difficult. But, he has some positives too! He's got no teeth (we don't know why...he came to us that way), and though he's shy, he is very friendly when he is feeling safe and comfortable. And look how handsome he is! Such a looker... George is approximately 7 years old, and he was front-paw declawed by his previous owners. Please share George's photo and story so we can make 2019 the year he finally finds his forever home! We rescued Tabitha from Hamilton Animal Control! Tabitha was brought to Hamilton Animal Control as a stray. She has been declawed, so if she was truly a stray, whoever owned her didn’t come to the shelter looking for her. Tabitha had been at the shelter for a month before we were finally able to rescue her. It’s likely that Tabitha has arthritis, as she does have signs of it. Probable cause of this arthritis is the fact that she’s a bit overweight, and that she has been declawed. During declawing surgery, the cat’s toes are amputated at the last joint. Most people do not realize that a portion of the bone —not only the nail— is removed. While some felines will have immediate complications from the procedure, it may be many months or years before the damaging effects of declawing become obvious. Declawing may result in permanent lameness, arthritis, and other long-term complications, including litter box avoidance. Cats normally walk with their toes bearing the weight of their bodies; each step is cushioned by the pad under the toe. Declawed cats experience extreme pain supporting their body weight when standing or walking, and this is exacerbated if the cat is overweight, as Tabitha is… For more about the detrimental effects of declawing, and why many vet clinics no longer perform the surgery, visit www.pawproject.org @pawproject Tabitha has a vet visit coming up where we can get our vet’s advice about possible medication and a calorie reduced diet to get a few of those extra pounds off. She’s currently settling in at her foster home and seems to be very thankful to be out of the shelter and getting some love and attention. Welcome Tabitha! We’re gonna do our best to make you feel better and find you a forever home… http://www.ladybirdanimalsanctuary.com/las813/ #ladybirdanimalsanctuary #lookwhatlovecando #hamont #hamilton #animalrescue #adoptdontshop #dontshopadopt #bandeclawing #declawed @declawedanddumped #tabitha #rescue #rescued #catsofinstagram
