How do you expect them to tell the difference? Spread catnip where you want them to scratch to encourage healthy scratching. Trim their nails every 3-4 weeks if indoors. Vet Costs in Norway

If you’ve just gotten your furbaby, the next thing you’ll want to do is take him or her to the vet for a routine checkup, as well as making sure that they are updated with their vaccinations. For kittens (especially outdoor ones), it’s crucial to get the combination shot, which I believe (check with your vet) protects against feline flu, chlamydia, and another thing that I can’t remember off the top of my head. At the same time, if your kitten hadn’t been dewormed yet by the time you get it, consult a vet for the proper medication. In most cases, even in door kittens will have worms in his stomach because it gets transmitted from the mother. This can become a serious issue, such as lack of appetite, diarrhea, or lack of energy among other things which can really hinder your kitten’s growing development. The one that I used is Profender, a topical medication that you apply on the neck of your cat. All medications in Norway must be prescribed by the vet, so there’s usually a prescription fee along with the fee of the actual medication.

Secondly, if you want to get your cat spayed or neutered, the recommended age is between 5-6 months. I thought this was pretty late for kittens, since they usually get neutered as young as two or three months in the US, and I know this from first hand experience. However, vets here believe that the anesthesia used may be harmful to the kitten’s body, which is why they want to wait until they are more developed. This is quite true because vets usually don’t want to put senior cats under since there’s the chance that they might not wake up. At the same time, many clinics have “package deal,” where if you get your cat vaccinated, sterilized, and microchipped, you can spend less than doing the three things individually. In case you are wondering how much it costs to neuter/spay a dog, the answer is you usually can’t. Norway does not allow owners to neuter or spay a healthy dog without medical reasons. But the good news is that I don’t think there is a dog overpopulation problem here in Norway.

At the same time, DECLAWING IS ILLEGAL here as with many European countries. I still can’t believe that US hasn’t banned this barbaric act all together. I recently watched a really informative documentary on the cruelty of declawing called, “The Paws Project.” Here’s the link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paIfc7Qd2Yc&feature=share) 

I highly recommend you to watch it if you or someone you know is considering declawing your cat. Not only are you amputating a part of the cat’s distal phalanges, or end bones, you are also preventing them from living a normal life for the rest of his or her life. The cat will develop psychological problems and start using their teeth more, which can be even worse than just scratches. If you are someone who loves cats but can’t afford the medical cost or act responsibly, please do not have one. A lot of people adopt a kitten at the spur of the moment because they are cute, then either give them away, throw them out, or return back to the shelter once they are older. So please think about all the costs and consequences before getting any furry friends. They will be around you for the next 15 to 20 years, and needs to be loved and cared for each day.

This post is a bit long but I hope it’s informative. A domesticated animal is way more than just a pet, so please treat each one of your furbabies like the way you treat a family member. Make sure they are not only living, but also living healthily, happily, and safely. :)

How a declawed, twenty pound cat who only wants to take a few steps before laying down becomes a stray is a mystery to us, but we digress… Despite having a pretty bad flea infestation, and a very dirty bum from not being able to turn to clean it, Sweet Potato is as sweet as they come. HAC staff got her bum cleaned up and administered flea treatment, and she seemed to be very thankful for both those things. On the day of her rescue, we took Sweet Potato to the vet for a check up and she is healthy, other than needing to lose quite a lot of weight. Her blood results were normal, and she tested negative for FIV and FeLV. Yay! Here’s a note from Sweet Potato’s foster home: “Sweet Potato is as her name suggests-super sweet! Very purry and friendly, loves pets, being brushed and playing. Due to her large size, she occasionally does the “butt scoot” on the floor after using the litter box as she can’t reach her back end to clean up. If you keep a mat or carpet near the litter tray, she seems to be good at using the same spot so it’s easy to deal with. She also doesn’t mind her back end being washed with a warm cloth which also keeps things clean back there. Once she loses a bit of weight and can reach, she should start cleaning herself again. This video is definitely jarring, but maybe it's exactly what we need.

So many people are simply uneducated about what declawing a cat actually means, and there are so many vets out there that don't explain the procedure before doing it.

Declawing a cat is not like removing the nail bed in a human. It means removing the entire last BONE of each digit.

We rescued Jersey from Hamilton Animal Control yesterday! Jersey came into HAC as a stray, and he was never claimed by his owners, even though he spent more than a month at the shelter. What an absolute doll Jersey is! Such a friendly guy. As you can see from his photos and video, Jersey could use to lose a few pounds. He’s a very hefty boy! He can't properly groom himself, so his back is greasy and dirty from lack of cleaning. Poor guy! Jersey has a vet appointment coming up where he will have a physical, blood work, and where we can get a proper diet started to get him fit! Just like recently rescued Tabitha, Jersey is showing signs of arthritis that is likely being caused by the fact that he is declawed and overweight. Though Jersey’s symptoms are much less severe than Tabitha’s, they’re still present. We’ll have a better idea of the treatment he needs once he’s had his vet visit. For now, Jersey has made himself right at home in his foster home, and he seems very happy to be out of a cage. He's currently enjoying many pats, and much needed brushing.
